The theme for this edition is “abortion in pop culture.” As a complement to the first edition’s “stigma” theme, we decided to focus on how and where the topic of abortion is present in the cultural expressions of our daily lives. Our feature articles, focusing on the more recent controversial messages about abortion in hip hop music as well as the limited scripting of abortion in the movies, offer two unique perspectives with which to analyze the partial portrayal and lack of presence of our truths in our culture. Though it may seem unrealistic to hope that mainstream music, film, television, magazines, advertising and the Internet accurately reflect the experiences of real people, it is precisely what we must demand. The alternative, to surround ourselves with contradictory images that serve to further reinforce stereotypes and stigmas, is not constructive. This drive to see our experiences, as women who have had abortions or men who have been involved in one, reflected in our surroundings is an essential value of this magazine. We hope that by publishing your stories we can capture the diverse experiences of people that have been involved in an abortion and in doing so change how we and others perceive that experience. We have received positive feedback from the first edition and we hope that we surprise and please again with this one! As always we welcome your comments at [email protected]. You're right about the stigma -- it's something you hardly ever hear anyone say they have personal experience with. Nicole 3/3 Conservative right wing websites hail hip-hop as the new voice of the pro-life movement. Really. Let me say that again; check pro-life websites and see the voices of hip-hop cultural icons from Common to Mos Def. Really. Artists’ lyrics as disparate as Nick to Nas may be found on altars and pulpits across the country; university thesis papers are pointing to a view of hip-hop that many of its originators and followers may find surprising. Pleading for California legislators on the issue of Roe v. Wade to listen to its new leaders, Anne Hendershott says “They might begin by listening to the poignant lyrics of hip-hop artist Nas in his recent mega-hit, ‘One Mic’. Nas knows that his community has been devastated by abortion and in a courageous plea, the rapper simply asks women to stop abortion because ‘we need more warriors here.’" The biggest coup for the radical right is famed actor turned rapper Nick Cannon, whose video Can I Live takes the viewers on an emotional journey of a mother’s heart wrenching decision while laying on a medical table in an abortion clinic. Subliminal and, according to Cannon, unintentional in its leanings, he asks his mother to give him a chance, to “make the right decision, not the knife decision.” The video ends with a group of beautiful children wearing “Can I Live” t-shirts and singing. To some, Cannon symbolizes hip-hop’s postmodern response to its predominantly pro-choice parents. Despite his claims to just be “telling his mother’s story,” his political stance on the issue of abortion is no longer relevant; he provided a savory victory to a movement craving an “in” to hip-hop generation’s youth. Now the covenant has been broken and Cannon’s voice, barely audible in the landscape of hip-hop, has allowed evangelism to put its claw into a culture that from birth represented its polar opposite. Hip-Hop activist Rosa Clemente from Malcolm X Grassroots Movement and REACHip-Hop explains, “Hip-Hop at its roots is about choices, and the different type of choices that we make.” Clemente goes on to say, “I believe that the pro-life anthem has been hijacked by right wing Christians, and as someone who believes in humanity I’m all about life. I consider myself pro-life and someone who believes in a woman’s right to self determine her own body. If she chooses to have an abortion that’s fine with me.” But issues of race and class are also at play here and cannot be underestimated in a country founded on white supremacy. Witness recent comments by former Education Secretary William Bennett, who said that “…you could abort every black Hip-Hop and Family Values El hip-hop y los valores familiares By J-Love / Por J-Love Las páginas web de los grupos de derecha aclaman al hip-hop como la nueva voz del movimiento provida. Si ella elige tener un aborto, estoy de 5/5 acuerdo con ello." baby in this country and your crime rate would go down.” Bennett was part of President Reagan and Bush’s administration, and now has his own syndicated radio show as well as being a Fox News contributor. Asked if he owed people an apology for his comment, he replied, “I don’t think so.” So once again we find that every major debate in America sits on top of the principles of race, class and gender. Unfortunately hip-hop is no different, which means it is no surprise that all the artists in the spotlight on the issues of a woman’s choice are men. In no way should those who see themselves as prochoice hip-hop lovers demonize Cannon, Nas, or Common; they are simply speaking their truths and offering their perspective. But we encounter two problems with this; one is that in the absence of other voices speaking to the issue, their view becomes the view. The second is the old racist adage of one black voice representing an entire race. In this case, the voice of three black male hip-hop artists speaks for the entire hiphop community. So that is how hip-hop became pro-life. We haven’t heard a decidedly pro-choice song since Digable Planets, Femme Fatal in 1993. That was a long time ago. Where are our current pro-choice anthems? It is up to those of us active in the hiphop community to resurrect hip-hop’s founding principles, and in so doing create a more balanced worldview on the most critical issues facing us today. Until then, we are susceptible to the continued co-optation of hip-hop’s culture and message from media conglomerates to the pro-life establishment. You choose. A Young Women's Guide to a Bold, Courageous and Empowered Life, Inner-Ocean Press (2007). Tu eliges. Pregnancy (the unplanned kind) has been a favorite topic in popular entertainment since… well, forever. There are few words that can conjure up as much immediate drama as, “Honey, I’m pregnant.” For as long as we’ve been able to keep track, we’ve known that half of all unintended pregnancies end in abortion. So it would logically follow that abortion, too, would be a favorite topic on our living room TV’s and in the multiplexes. But not so! There is actually very little representation of the realistic results of the frenetic sexual activity of our favorite movie stars and TV characters (especially if you consider the last time you saw Brad Pitt tearing open a condom wrapper). Of course, a lot of things about TV and movies aren’t realistic. In real life, most apartments don’t usually come with wood floors and high ceilings, much less sunlight. We may know that, but most of me. So you tell me: where did I get these ideas from? us are still pretty disappointed by the first apartments we quickly realize are in our price range. How does this schism —the schism between reality and representation — translate to how women feel about their abortions? And in the rare instance when abortion does come up in pop culture, what kinds of stories are told about it? Does any of this stuff matter? How much influence does TV have on us, anyway? I go back and forth on this one. I can say that one of the most painful and bizarre parts of my own abortion experience (and I have the diary entries to prove it) was that I actually tried to fit myself into a recognizable script to understand my experience. I tried to feel things I didn't feel because I was certain that that's what I was supposed to feel. I also thought that I just plain didn't fit the script, that people "like me" didn't have abortions. Now at that time in my life, not one of my many friends who had had abortions had ever spoken about it to I have a pretty good idea After years of somewhat obsessively researching, watching, and collecting abortion stories from the American mainstream (TV and more-or-less "Hollywood" movies), I have come up with some script outlines you can choose from if you want to be a woman having an abortion. The Silent Victim The Silent Victim is by far the favored character in any abortion script. Ideally, this story takes place before Roe v. Wade (although the character certainly lives on) and you die as a result of a botched abortion. You are poor and you are young. You have been brutalized, raped, incested, or at the very least taken advantage of by an older, cruel, deceiving bastard who said he’d marry you. You are often paired with the Noble Abortion Doctor because if he appears, he is Fit the Script? Eres pobre y joven. Has sido golpeada, violada, han cometido incesto contigo, o por lo menos algún bastardo más grande, cruel y de mala 7/7 usually the main character and you are a minor character in his story. Do I need to explain this? It usually happens on TV, at the end of a season or during sweeps week. Sometimes you will get as far as the waiting room of the clinic before you change your mind and decide to "keep my baby." I am all for women changing their minds, the more the better actually, but this script is downright hilarious in its cynical mining of abortion for shock value without ever having to actually deal with someone who actually has one. reputación se ha aprovechado de ti diciendo que se iba a casar contigo. (2004) You Have Never Been More Miserable In this script, abortion is legal and available and you choose to have one for complex reasons (not because of really extreme circumstances like rape or incest). You are not a Silent Victim; you are the agent of your own destiny. After your abortion, though, your life starts to suck really bad. The treatment of abortion in this pop script is probably best summed up by Susan Faludi: “You may be free and equal now, [the media] says to women, but you have never been more miserable.” Your life might suck because of those damn pro-lifers murdering your abortion doctor while you are on the operating table (no kidding; see If These Walls Could Talk), or it might suck because you start hallucinating cute little babies asking you "Why?", or it debido a su cínico significado de aborto como trauma sin siquiera lidiar con alguien que en verdad lo haya tenido. Referencias: Beverly Hills 90210 (1994), Citizen Ruth (1996), Felicity (1999), Dawson’s Creek (2000), Sex and the City (2001), The O.C. Tu vida puede empeorar debido a esos malditos pro-vidas asesinando el doctor que te realizó el procedimiento mientras tú estás en la mesa de operaciones (no estoy bromeando, vean Si las paredes hablaran), might suck because you are deeply conflicted about whether or not you did the right thing. Or, maybe you’ll just die in the next episode. Sorry about that. This show has dealt with abortion twice, though these episodes don't get aired by the American networks that carry the show. If you are a character on this ever-evolving teen drama series, you might just get to have an abortion, deal with all kinds of complex moral and practical issues, talk it out with your friends, and deal with it pretty okay. And you will still get to go to school and have a normal life. The Noble Abortion Doctor Many post-Roe films set in pre-Roe times deliver us the Noble Abortion Doctor, a figure who seems more palatable to even the most staunch pro-choicers than the women he aids. Referencias: You’ve Ruined Me, Eddie! (1960), Another World (1964 - el primer film was Broadway’s first abortion), Maude (1973 - TV's first prime time abortion), Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), As the World Turns (1992), All My Children (1995), Sex and the City (2001) From spending a horrific amount of time researching, archiving and watching these instances of abortion stories, I have to admit my feeling that maybe it’s for the best that this particular subplot is so scarce. Maybe it’s better to be invisible than to be victimized, scarred, traumatized or, if you’re really lucky, desperately confused. Until the acceptable treatment of abortion changes, there is little to be gained by demanding more of the same. As with any underrepresented topic, these few stories become hyperrepresentative of what it’s like to have an abortion. If I am the only woman in the room speaking about her abortion, then I am assumed to be speaking for all women who have had abortions. Si soy la única mujer hablando sobre su aborto, entonces se asume que estoy 9/9 same reason people expect Spike Lee to make films that speak for all black people, just because Hollywood hasn’t gotten around to hiring more Black directors. Of course, unlike being Black, we can choose to hide our status as women-who-have. And that’s the easiest thing in the world... right? But I argue that the implications of this silence, beyond maintaining the status quo of stigma, have important political repercussions as well. The absence of women’s voices in our society’s abortion discussion goes beyond stupid pop culture, extending also into “serious” news coverage. Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting did a study in 1992 in which they examined abortion coverage in the news and concluded that there were far more articles published by major newspapers about how the issue of abortion has affected various political candidacies, races and parties than there were articles on how women with unwanted pregnancies were affected by growing restrictions on funding, counseling and access. I don’t foresee people marching on Washington or writing letters to NBC to demand more abortion stories on TV as they might for the cause of racial minorities or less violence. It may not even be necessary to hope for this. Do media messages matter? Of course they do. But even though hardly anyone on TV seems to ever go to work, or use a condom, or place their elderly parents in nursing homes, somehow we all know about these things anyway. There are other ways that we glean information about the human experience, and not all of them are mysterious. We talk to each other, if sometimes with burning cheeks and averted eyes. We type things into Google search fields that we would never say out loud. We see quirky independent OUR MINDS / NUESTRAS MENTES Penny Lane is an independent filmmaker who has been working for eight years to bring out the voices of silenced communities -- from inner city youth to welfare recipients to civilian casualties in Iraq. In other words, we don’t have to wait for other people to do it. Screw TV. Screw corporate media in general. One in three women has had an abortion. We need to find creative ways to give those women a safe place to speak from, and that’s exactly what I see happening all around me. Zines, websites, speak-outs, t-shirts, movies and just plain talking to your friends about abortion — we can do it better. So let's not totally knock the Silent Victim and her pop culture abortion-having friends. Let's give her more time, and space, and let her grow out of these oversimplified scripts. As more real people share their real abortion stories, in all of their messiness and complexity, our collective imagination will be forced to change to allow for them. Even those damn TV writers will catch on eventually. He was only 20. We had the abortion two weeks after we found out. When I got to the clinic they told me [that I was] eight weeks. What really convinced us [to have the abortion is that] I had no job. I was doing poorly in school or I just didn’t go. And my boyfriend’s job was only paying $13 an hour. I got to the clinic around 8:30. The room was packed. There were no seats available and the room wasn’t even that big. It was people standing, sitting on the floor. I thought there would be a little more privacy. All the girls looked sick and tired, all holding and leaning on their boyfriends. There had to be like 30 girls: girls my age, women in their 30’s, and older women no less than 40. The guys were just sitting there looking into space comforting their girl, holding them, kissing them, whispering useless and unimportant things in their ear. I was scared. There’s four people in the room with you: the doctor, the nurse, the needle man and some other woman. I was so nervous. Obviously I had sex but having your stuff wide open and three people staring at it — that’s just uncomfortable. Then the needle man stuck me with this big needle. I was screaming. I was so scared. R.P., 15 CPL spoke to R.P. the day before her 2nd abortion. I’ve been sexually active for about a year and a half. I’ve been pregnant once before, when I was 14. The first time, I just denied it. I took a thousand pregnancy tests just trying to find a negative. When I told my boyfriend, I didn’t really know what to feel. I felt really scared and really upset and aggravated with myself and mad at him that he wasn’t taking the responsibility he was supposed to take. Last time, I didn’t tell my parents, but me and my boyfriend paid for it and got an abortion. OUR TRUTHS / NUESTRAS VERDADES estaba gritando. I found out I was pregnant again about a week and a half ago. I freaked out, went home and started crying. I was just upset. I felt stupid. I knew that I either had to have the baby or have an abortion. And I wasn’t gonna have the baby. Abortions are painful and emotionally stressful. I felt stupid for not protecting myself for a second time. It just feels better without a condom. Since he [my boyfriend] smokes a lot of pot, I kinda thought his sperm wasn’t really gonna do anything. I thought it was just gone cause he smokes so much, but it was good sperm. [My boyfriend] was there when I took the pregnancy test. I think he was freaked out. I took his virginity and he didn’t take mine so the fact that the first girl that he did it with was having a baby, or was pregnant, he got really freaked out —but he was really supportive. Estaba molesta, me sentí estúpida. My parents] were upset about it because they knew about my first one and they thought I had been really careless. I thought [my dad] might be mad and he is a little mad but not in a grounding kind of way. He’s mad but mostly very supportive. My dad knows I smoke pot [and] cigarettes. My dad knows I’m sexually active. Since I just moved out of my mom’s house and into my dad’s house, she was pissed that I had lied to her about it. I told her that the best way to not get pregnant was abstinence so she kinda thought I wasn’t having sex. She was pissed but still supportive. It’s gonna be much easier than the last time. First of all, ‘cause I told my parents beforehand. Last time I told them after I already got it. The first time I knew I didn’t want to have the baby but the thought of something growing inside of me and me just killing it was very upsetting. I was having doubts if I was gonna be able to go through it or not and espermatozoides no iban a poder hacer nada. I want nine babies when I’m older. D.A., 22 The condom broke. We were going out for three months. She wanted to get rid of it more than I did. I was shocked [when I found out she was pregnant]. A whole bunch of [stuff] went through my head. She was mad calm. At first she didn’t want to tell me because she knew she couldn’t have it. I thank God for the people who fought hard to make this legal. I mean, speaking from experience, there is nothing like a second chance. Mistakes do happen and for your whole future to be taken away as your punishment is unreasonable. I have a lot going for myself, but I have to focus on myself right now. Don’t get me wrong, I want kids, and I want to give them my 100 percent attention and time. But I definitely can’t do that right now. So I am very grateful for the choices we have today. My mom is willing to do anything and everything for me and I would be hurting her if I did something like that to her and to my life. estaba embarazada]. OUR TRUTHS / NUESTRAS VERDADES it was very painful, but I think it will be easier the second time. I have a lot more support this time. 1 3/13 { Artwork contributed by / Colaboración artística de Melanie Weidner, www.listenforjoy.com 1 4/14 It has been over a year and I still cry and think about my abortion. I had been in a serious relationship with a guy (not a man) when I got pregnant. We had had the talk and I had always thought, and said, that I would never have an abotion. He didn't want kids at 24, I was 29. I lived with friends, had no health insurance, no "real job" and the last thing I wanted to do was move back with my parents. I knew no matter what choice I made it would be the end of our relationship, but for some reason I felt that if I did what he wanted, we would stay together. The day after I found out I was pregnant I thought I miscarried. Turns out it was implantation bleeding. For the next month I took pregnancy test after pregnancy test hoping it would turn out negative. It never did. I finally went to Planned Parenthood to have an ultra sound. My boyfriend knew I was going in to find out, he didn't know I would make the decision there and then. I had to. I knew if I didn't, I would never go back. I also knew I had no support in raising a child and didn't want to be a case study or fuck up a child I wasn't ready for, or that wouldn't have the father it needed. I called him and told him I was still pregnant and I was going to have the abortion. Thankfully, my best friend showed up and held my hand through the whole thing. When it was done, I had a sense of relief. There was no more wondering if I was still pregnant or not. My boyfriend called a bit later to find out what was going on. I told him I had had it. He lived about 2 hours away from me. He said he knew he should come out and be with me. But instead he chose to play softball with his softball team and have a party at his house afterwards. I never felt so alone in my life. He came the next evening, but it didn't matter, I finally knew his character. A month later we broke up, he was no longer happy. I can't say I was happy any longer, after his behavior that day. A few months after that I had family issues arise that made me realize I was codependent. I couldn't sleep, was stressed out beyond belief. Looking back on that, I realize that if I had kept it, I probably would have lost it at that time, or would have completely messed it up with all of my stress and hormones. I think I tell myself this as a way to feel better about the whole thing. Truth is, I don't know if I ever will. That is why I hope this will bring me some sort of closure. To share my story, and not feel so alone. I never felt more alone then I did that day, and especially after the way my boyfriend treated me. I felt like we were in it together, but I was wrong, it was just me. Now, I just try to realize that I did what I needed to do. I couldn't have given away my baby, he wasn't going to provide support and I couldn't move back home. I think I will never be able to forgive myself, and wonder what my child would be like. I have to wonder if he thinks the same way. If the "guy" ever has the same torment that the woman has, or if it is more difficult on us, as we are the ones that went through it, and must live with it. I just have to remind myself that I am not alone, probably in any aspect of my story. I consider myself fortunate that I never had to face what to me would be the wrenching decision of whether to terminate a pregnancy. However, there are many women – many African American women – who have made that ultimate choice. I am producing Silent Choices for them. Silent Choices is a documentary film about the impact of abortion and other reproductive health issues on the lives of African American women. Several women featured in the film talk about the abortions they had and how the experience shaped their lives. I follow one young woman, Lori, as she attends last year’s March for Women’s Lives. She had two abortions during college and felt the need to stand up for her right to choose. Another woman named Angela recounts the degradation and fear she felt when she had an illegal abortion nearly 40 years ago. But abortion is only one piece of a complex puzzle that constitutes Black women’s daily survival, and it is an option that many still do not feel comfortable embracing publicly. In part, it is because of the influence of the church in our communities that has made abortion a taboo subject among African Americans. The identification of abortion as an offshoot of white feminist mores further alienates Black women from the issue (as well as the white, middle-class women who dominate the leadership of mainstream pro-choice organizations). What needs to be understood is that abortion is not the zero-sum game that many early feminists made it out to be. For Black women, the “right to choose” also means the choice of affordable housing, accessible health care, and good schools for our children, not having to fight racism in the larger world and sexism among Black men. In one segment of the film, a group of poor, African American women in South Carolina were arrested for testing positive for drugs while pregnant. The irony is that the women were arrested while seeking pre-natal care at their local public hospital. These women filed suit against the hospital, and in 2001, the U.S. Supreme Court sided with the women, ruling that their fourth amendment rights (protecting against illegal search and seizure) were violated. What happened to these women illustrates that the implications of the term “choice” grow much wider and more complicated when race and class come into play. A decade ago, I had a heated discussion with a close friend who is African American and pro-life. During the discussion, she proclaimed that abortion The Color of Choice: Breaking the Silence with Silent Choices El color de las decisiones: Rompiendo el silencio con decisiones silenciosas By / Por Faith Pennick Mi historia no es personal. Nunca he tenido un aborto, ni tampoco he estado embarazada. Lo que les pasó a estas mujeres ilustra que las implicaciones del 2 3/23 is a “white woman’s issue” and that Black women have “more important things to worry about.” As a pro-choice, African American woman, that comment made me feel invisible. The invisibility of Black women is nothing new in American society. We frequent the periphery —your domestic workers, laborers, activists, entrepreneurs, ministers, health care workers, teachers, lawyers and mothers— contributing to building this country and communities of African American families with little fanfare. Reproductive health has always been important to us, but we may not have been as vocal, politically or personally, about preserving our choices. Silent Choices is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2006. For more information on Silent Choices or to make a tax-deductible donation to the film, go to www.orgchaos.com. You can contact Faith Pennick at [email protected]. It was my friend’s comment that inspired Silent Choices. I want to reclaim visibility for African American women and give us the freedom to talk about abortion and reproductive health on our terms. Breaking the silence is what leads to Black women embracing our power and ultimately controlling our own destinies. We think that this is a good way to find out what people feel and think on the topic. It can be used in school, in a course, among your family or with your friends. We present the game below in the hopes that it can be useful and improved upon with your ideas and experiences. Required material: Index cards Pens Game preparation Prepare a set of cards that say, “No”, “Yes” and “Depends” for every game player. Choose five blank cards for every game player. On these cards write hypothetical situations that are related to abortion, with a question at the end. At the end of this article we offer some examples but it is important that the situations are adapted to your context and the group with which you are playing. The more cards that you can create with situations relevant to you and to other game players, the more interesting the game will be. A variation on this step is that instead of preparing the cards ahead of time, your group can create the cards together before you play. In this case it is important that you have some examples already prepared. Try to save the new cards that you create so that the game grows and is more interesting each time. in the center of the table. Decide who will start the game. The first player picks the first card from the stack of question cards and reads the card aloud. The player then decides who s/he wants to answer the question and announces this to the group. S/he then reads the card aloud again directly to the chosen player. Next, s/he places one of the answer cards (Yes, No or Depends) face down, in front of the chosen player according to what s/he thinks the chosen player will respond. The chosen player selects the answer card from third set that best reflects their true response to the question and places it face down as well. Both players then share what their answer cards say. Playing instructions Divide the question cards among the game players, giving each person five cards. Give each game player a set of answer cards (the “Yes,” “No” and “Depends” cards). Place all of the question cards face down If the first player correctly guessed the answer of their chosen player s/he is awarded one point, if s/he is incorrect, the chosen player is awarded the point. In either case, the chosen player must then explain her/his answer. Si la persona que hace la pregunta gana, continúa con una nueva tarjeta que RESOURCES FOR US / RECURSOS PARA NOSOTRAS Translated by / traducido por Emily Louise Barcklow 2 5/25 The next turn is given to whoever scored the point. The person with the most points wins. Recommendation It is important to promote a respectful environment among all of the players at all points in the game. WE HOPE THAT YOU ENJOY YOURSELVES AS MUCH AS WE DID! Examples of hypothetical situation cards: 1. You are pregnant and find out that you are HIV-positive. Would you continue with the pregnancy? 2. You have been in a relationship with your girlfriend for five years, and one day she tells you that she is pregnant. She wants to have the baby, but you don’t. Would you support her decision? 3. An acquaintance asks you for help in obtaining an abortion. The doctor is going to charge her more than she has, and she asks you for money. Would you loan it to her? 4. You are married and have a lover. For quite a while you have been thinking of having children. You get pregnant by your lover without intending to but you want to stay married to your husband. Would you continue with the pregnancy? 5. By chance, the daughter of a known conservative political leader comes to you because she is pregnant and wants to abort. Would you use your knowledge of this case as a political weapon? 6. You are pregnant and have decided that you do not want to have the child. In talking with a friend she asks you to continue with the pregnancy because she cannot have children and would like to adopt yours. Would you have the child for your friend? 7. You have been in a relationship with your girlfriend for one year. She gets RESOURCES FOR US / RECURSOS PARA NOSOTRAS puede dirigir a cualquier persona del grupo. 2. Once you arrive at the clinic, you discover that it is unsanitary, and you have doubts about the personnel’s training, but your friend says that it is her only option. Would you continue to stay to accompany her through the process? 9. When your family found out that you had an abortion, they make you feel guilty and treat you like a murderer.
