Around Our School - 7th Grade Science
Students have been busy in 7th grade Science! They are analyzing the processes of our exceptional planet Earth. Students have
analyzed the layers of the 3rd rock from the sun by making 3-D models and will continue to learn how our geologically-active
home destroys and renews through earthquakes and volcanoes. Students will be designing “earthquake proof” homes in class
using tape and straws. They will analyze technological advances in earthquake proof engineering, including cross braces,
dampers, and other innovations. Students will then test their models on a shake board under stress to test their design.
As we work towards student driven inquiry and solving real world problems, students have assessed biomes and the possible
solutions of habitat destruction, created models for earth processes, and even stepped into the role of teacher through class
discussions.
This year we invested in mini-greenhouses and students built tiny ecosystems in soda
bottles. Students observed both successful closed-ecosystems and analyzed the problems
in unsuccessful closed-ecosystems. Students in Ms. Buck’s class gained a first-hand experience in observing and analyzing food web roles with thier pet, Izzy the Science Lizard.
As we continue, data collection, experimentation, and observations are key skills in developing scientists and in creating citizens capable of solving problems that our youth will
face as they inherit our social obligations. Our next units are Astronomy and Sustainability.
Students will explore potential contributions they may make in the future of Science.
