a Real-life Hero!
th
A walk on 29 Street became
more than just a casual outing last
month for Cosmetology student
Fernando Torres. He ended up
saving a man’s life.
He and a friend came upon a
man lying unconscious on a bench,
with the man’s wife frantically
trying to revive him. Fernando
recognized the emergency situation immediately, and
following all the correct procedures he learned last year in
the CTEC Certified Nursing Assistant program, he asked
the wife if he could help, explained that he was trained in
CPR, and told her to call 911. He began CPR on the man,
and after a few minutes of compressions, the man began
to respond. The ambulance arrived quickly thereafter, and
rushed the man off to the hospital.
The emergency responders confirmed that the man was
having a heart attack, and Fernando’s quick assistance
saved his life. “I was really nervous and shaking the whole
time,” Fernando said, “but at the end, it made me feel like
Superman.” 

Clarissa Jimenez and Adriana Lastiri with Anthony chavez.
“Si, Se Puede!”
Anthony Chavez, grandson of the
great civil rights leader Cesar Chavez,
spoke to students on the Arapahoe Campus Tuesday, May
2nd. Students and staff who got to listen to the young
activist were inspired by his words. Students Clarissa
Jimenez and Adriana Lastiri were first in line for a photo
with the young leader after he spoke. Teacher Theresa Reali
thanked him for bringing his stories to our campus. Student
Gabriel Morales responded with just one word, “Inspiring!”
Anthony Chavez shared stories of the legacy left by
his grandfather who helped found the United Farmworkers
Union, leading the decades-long fight for farmworkers’
(continued on page 2)
Anthony Chavez, “Si, Se Puede!” . . . continued from page 1
rights. Facing dangerous conditions and poverty-level
pay, Cesar Chavez led thousands of farmworkers in strikes
and boycotts, finally mobilizing over 17 million people to
recognize the plight of farmworkers and to boycot buying
grapes and lettuce. “Your vote is powerful, but even more
powerful is your dollar. The toughest enforcer is the
consumer,” Anthony Chavez said.
He explained that the fight for civil rights is a fight
for human rights, and farmworkers still often work in
toxic conditions. The fruits and vegetables we all find so
readily available in super markets come at a high price for
the farmworkers’ health, he said. Lethal pesticides are still
used on much of the produce, often with deadly results for
the workers and the earth. “No one has the right to treat
people or the land in such a way,” he said, “not even a
billion dollar industry.”
His grandfather’s famous slogan, “Si Se Puede,” “Yes
We Can”, was crafted with organizer Dolores Huerta, to
encourage farmworkers to realize their potential power.
Anthony Chavez said, “My grandfather knew if we wanted
to make changes in our communities, we had to wake up in
the morning saying, ‘Si se puede, yes we can.’”
He encouraged students to use their power to make a
difference. “The end of all education should be service to
others,” Anthony Chavez said. “I want to remind you to
aim high, dream big, follow your heart.”
In his final words of the assembly, Anthony Chavez
issued a challenge and a call to all in the audience. “Be the
‘solutionaries’ the world needs.” 

KUDOS to our
Principal and director
dr. Joan Bludorn
We are all focused on graduation and
completing credits right now, but ARHS
Principal and CTE Director Joan Bludorn
recently had a graduation of her own to
celebrate.
Dr. Bludorn completed her Doctor
in Education Leadership and Policy
Studies this spring. She was awarded her
degree from the University of Northern
Colorado in Greeley on Friday, May 4th.
She celebrated with friends and family.
“I love learning,” she said. “I want to
always give my best to the students.”
Congratulations, Dr. Bludorn! 
LATINO YOUTH LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Interventionist Ms. Julie Graff and Community Liason Ms. Carmen Faucette took several ARHS students
to the Latino Youth Leadership Conference this spring. Everyone who attended had a great time. Our campus
Resource Officer Ken Rosales attended, too, and was one of the featured presenters as a successful Latino leader
in our community. 
Notes from the Community Liaison:
Hello everyone, we are coming closer to the end of the school year and I want to take this opportunity to thank all
the parents that participated in the ‘Love and Logic’ parenting classes offered in our campus last fall. I am equally
thankful to the parents who participated in our ‘Latino Reading Group’. This group is open to all parents and is
conducted in English and Spanish, also the books we read are published in both languages as well.
These parenting classes groups and reading groups have been very successful and we appreciate your commitment
in working in partnership with our teachers and administrators towards the education of all of our students.
We are planning to continue with these groups next school year and we are open to any suggestions to improve
participation in these groups. We are looking forward to see you next school year and we wish you a great
summer!
Carmen Faucette 720-561-5501

Teacher Peggy Slater
Makes Superintendent’s Honor Roll
Congratulations to Arapahoe Campus teacher and BVSD Print Shop Manager
Peggy Slater! She was recognized by Superintendent Bruce Messinger and the
Board of Education in the Superintendent’s Honor Roll at the April 24th Board
meeting. She was selected for this honor because of her outstanding contributions
toward meeting BVSD’s sustainability goals as outlined in the sustainability
Management System (SMS). This was the third annual “Earth Day” Superintendent’s
Honor Roll in which individuals are recognized specifically because of their work to
help green BVSD.
Mrs. Slater was nominated for the honor by fellow teachers Ms. Jode Brexa
and Mrs. Catherine Prior. Mrs. Slater is our Campus Recycling Coordinator, and
under her guidance, students in the Graphic Communications Program and in the
Student Council classes make sure that we are all recycling. These students not only
provide recycling boxes for every classroom and office in our building; they also
move through the campus every week to collect the recyclables. Additionally, as
class projects, these students have designed recycling posters to promote the efforts
campus wide.
EcoCycle reports that these efforts have saved more than 50 trees a year. As Ms.
Brexa put it, over Mrs. Slater’s past nine years on our campus, “We’re talking about
a forest.” Principal and TEC Director Dr. Joan Bludorn added, “Wow, what a nice
tribute! Well deserved.” 
Arapahoe Students Enjoy Reading Using New Nooks!

I Dream
by Karla Trujillo
She was really cold not knowing where she was. It was dark with red lighting
lights. Sometimes it was purple and sometimes just bright, and little did she know
it was maybe the start. She walked through a river cold like the snow. She noticed
her feet got really yellow, so she got really scared that she would meet a fellow
and look like an ugly Othello. She got worried and felt that she was fainting,
but what made her open her big eyes was that there was a painting, maybe an
enormous dragon-color puce, but she wasn’t even close because it was just a
painting of a big bottle of juice. The girl kept walking and walking through; it
didn’t make sense what she was doing in a weird place. She imagines a pretty
world but the reality was that it was a petty world. Nothing else to do so she
kept walking through. She stopped and saw a small coconut tree with orangutans
climbing and screaming, “wee, wee, wee”. Really odd how they could fit in such
a small tree. But it was all magic or maybe a spell. The next thing she noticed was
there was a nasty smell. She walked through purple flowers and gray flowers too.
Then she saw a white, bright light and it was weird she thought. It was all eight
hours of an extreme dream. So be careful next time you go to sleep; you might
want to be extra prayerful before you begin to dream. 

Student Council members Cassandra Perez and Brenda
Sanchez created a bulletin board at the request of Ms.
Jode Brexa to showcase the volunteer tutors from CU.
CU TUTORS AT ARAPAHOE CAMPUS
For the last four semesters, University
of Colorado Senior Instructor Sally
Green has provided tutors to ARHS.
This semester, students in her Writing
and Rhetoric classes and students in
Dr. Tracy Ferrell’s writing course, “On
The Border: Mexico and the U.S.”,
are completing their service learning
projects by volunteering as ARHS tutors,
enriching their own learning experiences
as well as those of ARHS students.
Thank you to these dedicated CU
students who have been supporters
of student achievement at ARHS
Spring, 2012! Their commitment to
service-learning work has made a real
difference with one-to-one support for
ARHS students. 

Lights, Camera, Action!
Service Learning Rolls on Arapahoe Campus by Jode Brexa
If you have noticed some lights, camera and action around campus, you’ve observed two films currently in production
about service learning tutors who have been on our campus. CU volunteer tutor Matthew Coffaro filmed teachers and students
for his final class project in CU Instructor Tracy Farrell’s writing course. We hope his project will be used to promote service
learning opportunities on on our campus to next year’s CU students.
The other crew on campus was from Tajikistan. The SARAFINA national television sent a reporter and cameraman with
an interpreter and U.S. State department official. The reporter spoke Ukrainian, the cameraman Tajik and Russian, and the
Interpreter Russian and English. It was interesting to be part of the multilingual, multicultural interviews.
Thank you to ARHS science
teacher Kacee Ertzbischoff and
especillay to students Javiar
Sanchez and Miguel Jiminez who
volunteered to give an international
interview. We hope the story will
be aired on National TV, and we’ll
share the piece with everyone.
Thank you all to who excused
students, made connections,
interviewed, and welcomed
the filmakers, both local and
international, to our campus.

During a Flood . . .
Dear Families,
Did you know? The City of Boulder is the number one flash flood risk in the state of Colorado and floods can
literally occur in a flash during a severe storm. Although Boulder’s peak flood season is April 1 through Sept. 30,
floods can happen anytime throughout the year. If you live, work or play in Boulder, you are at risk. Be prepared
for flooding at any time.
Extra caution is needed: As a result of the 2010 fire in Fourmile Canyon, rain events could result in:
 muddy creek water
 creek levels rising more quickly
 higher frequency of flooded underpasses. Use caution near creeks.
For tips on what to do before, during and after a flood, visitwww.boulderfloodinfo.net.To help you prepare for
a flood event, the City of Boulder has put together a family Flood Action Plan for you to complete and post in
your home and an informational brochure that will help teach you what to do before, during and after a flood. To
view these materials and other flood information resources, visit www.boulderfloodinfo.net.
Sign up for FREE emergency alerts on home, work, and cell phones, text messaging, e-mail and Twitter.

What Can You Do in Case of a Flood?
Be Prepared
 Find out if your home or place of work is in a floodplain.
 Develop an emergency plan.
 Keep an emergency kit accessible.
 Complete a family Flood Action Plan so you know where your family will meet in an emergency.
During a Flood
 Move to higher ground immediately.
 Stay out of floodwaters. Swift moving waters may sweep people away, causing death.
 Avoid driving through flooded areas. Cars float in 18 inches of water and half of all flood fatalities are
auto-related.
 Stay away from power lines and electrical wires. Electrocution is the number two killer in floods.
After a Flood
 Do not return to disaster areas until authorized.
 Clean everything that got wet.

Queridas familias:
Durante una Inundación . . .
Necesita tomar precauciones adicionales.
Web: www.boulderoem.com Twitter: @BoulderOEM.

Parent Engagement Network presents:
Thriving During the Elementary & Secondary Years
Parents’ Relationship & Parenting By Jan Hittelman
There have been numerous studies that demonstrate the significant impact that parenting can have on marital satisfaction,
specifically that having children can have a negative impact on the couple’s relationship moving forward. Given the profound
changes that occur as a result of having children, including increased stress, discipline decisions, financial impacts, and the many
other challenges that come from parenting, these results may not be very surprising. Conversely, a 2009 study in the Journal of
Psychological Science found that marital satisfaction improves for couples after their children move out of the home. Clearly
parenting can put the couple’s relationship to the test. Similarly, dysfunctional relationships between parents can have a very
negative effect on family life and children’s overall adjustment. The lesson here is that in order to be effective parents, we have to
first take care of ourselves and nurture the relationship between parents, not just between parents and children.
