Ash Wednesday is the 13th, the Wednesday following the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. We will talk more about our plans for a beautiful celebration of our feast day next week but I would like to follow up on last week’s letter from the Bishops of Florida with what we hope will become a regular part of our Lenten journey: 40 Days for Life. SATURDAY, January 26th, 2013 Memorial of St. Timothy & St. Titus 8:00 am Dominique Brito 15th Birthday 5:00 pm Compas family Marc & Georgette Vital † Ofelia Lopez † 6:30 pm Francisco Maria Velasco Carlos y Bernardina Ortega Gloria de Garavito † Last Lent was the first time we participated as a parish in 40 SUNDAY, January 27th, 2013 Manuela Rodriguez † Days for Life. If you remember, we offered prayer and sacrifice in 7:15 am Familia Parroquial reparation for our society’s embrace of a culture of death and in 8:30 am 10:15 am Jorge & Victoria Panopio supplication for a conversion of heart and a renewal of life among us. Wedding Anniversary As I have mentioned a number of times, I am convinced that the Laline Rivero † violence that grips us is fed by the nation’s embrace of the violence 11:45 am Adela Mejia † of abortion as acceptable and the lack of respect for the dignity of every Francisco Rios † human life. Carlos Suarez † Along with offering personal prayer and sacrifice, 40 Days for Life also includes a peaceful and prayerful presence throughout Lent in front of the abortion clinic closest to us, on 117th Avenue. Last year we covered Mondays from 7 am to 7 pm and the other parishes of Miami covered the rest of the week. We had such a strong and faithful presence that the Respect Life Office of the Archdiocese of Miami has asked us to provide a more visible presence by moving our day to Tuesday. 5:00 pm 6:30 pm Cora de Chuecos † Thanksgiving to Mercy of God Yvette Armand † For all souls Thanksgiving to Divine Mercy Jose Nieves Roxana Gonzalez † MONDAY, January 28th, 2013 As we approach Lent, the members of Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial of St. Thomas Aquinas Mercedes Mesa Alvarez † Respect Life Committee will be at the entrance of the church so that we 8:00 am Barbara Valdes † can sign up to cover an hour and so make this a part of our Lenten Ricardo Madan † journey as a parish family. I would ask that if possible everyone sign up Sergio Vazquez † for one hour a week. If that is not possible, please choose at least one 7:00 pm Jose Bernardo Acosta † hour for this Lent to join us. Miguel Antonio Jimenez † Next week we will have the full schedule of Lenten Services in the bulletin and on the website for easy reference, along with the schedule for the celebrations of the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. Tercer Domingo Del Tiempo Ordinario 27 de Enero 2013 The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Snippets from the Catechism: The Gospel of Luke Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21 In the gospel reading today, Jesus proclaims the fulfillment of the prophet Isaiah. Jesus is the one who is anointed to bring glad tidings to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives, recovery of sight to the blind, freedom for the oppressed, and a year acceptable to the Lord. Paragraph 695 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) points to this reading as it teaches that “Jesus is God’s Anointed in a unique way; the humanity the Son assumed was entirely anointed by the Holy Spirit.” The mission of Jesus is the very mission of God. Jesus proclaims the passage from Isaiah as his own (see CCC paragraph 714). While Jesus comes for all mankind, there is a special connection to those most in need of him – the poor, the blind, and the captive. Again, the CCC uses this passage and others as the basis of our understanding that the Kingdom of God belongs to the poor and lowly (see CCC paragraph 544). In teaching about our call to serve the poor, paragraph 2443 of the CCC makes it clear that when “’the poor have the good news preached to them,” it is the sign of Christ’s presence.' “To all High School Students” If you are interested in participating in Our Lady of Lourdes Youth Group, we invite you to join us every Sunday at 6:15 pm, after the 5:00 pm English Mass, at St. Bernadette Hall.
