In one of the gospel readings for the Solemnity of Pentecost, Jesus promises his disciples he will send his Spirit to “teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.” “Teach” and “remind” go together in this passage. What is learned is what Christ has already taught and that the Spirit will remind us of. And what did he teach—what are the “commandments” by which we show our love for him? “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself” (Luke 10:27). If you and I and every Christian followed these commands today in the truly sacrificial way Jesus did, we would be on the verge of the kingdom of God tomorrow. WHERE WE LIVE, SERVE, & WALK TOGETHER IN FAITH. ST. JOSEPH’S PAG E TW O FROM THE PASTOR My Dear Parish Family, Happy Birthday to us, the Church! On this Pentecost Day, it is good for us to remember our beginnings as Church and to realize that the Holy Spirit is given to us as guide and guarantor of the truth that sets us free. On a less spiritual note: To respond to the recent concerns of high levels of lead found in Newark Public Schools and other New Jersey School Districts, St. Joseph’s Church proactively addressed these issues by contracting with a NJ certified analytical testing laboratory to analyze for copper and lead contamination at all our facilities. The selected sample sites included all drinking fountains, kitchen sinks, water sources for ice making machines, and any source of water used for cooking and food preparation at the Kindergarten, St. Joseph Grade School, Donovan Catholic High School, concession stands, the Sports Complex at Whitty Road, St. Joseph’s Church, Parish Center, and Cemetery. The test results were received Friday, April 29th, with just three of the fifty locations exceeding the lead and/or copper action limits (lead, 15 parts per billion: copper, 1,300 parts per billion). The water source sites that exceeded the copper and/or lead action levels were immediately removed from service: 1. Donovan Catholic HS snack room sink, used to wash utensils-not a source of drinking or cooking water (Lead) 2. Outside drinking fountain located at Whitty Road Donovan Sports Complex, out of service since Fall 2015 (Lead and Copper) 3. Drinking fountain in the Risen Christ Mausoleum Chapel at St. Joseph’s Cemetery Contaminated sources will not be returned to service unless a contamination free remedy can be implemented. The complete test report is available for viewing at the parish business office by appointment during business hours. God bless you all, Fr. Priesthood Vocation Discernment Meeting “Lord, How are You calling Me to Follow You?” God created each one of us for a particular calling as a way to follow Him. Through the Sacrament of Baptism we become a child of God and thus we are called to live in holiness through the love of God and neighbor! It is important to remember that our true vocation does not come from the world, or from ourselves, but rather an invitation directly from God to follow Him! If you are interested in learning more about a vocation to the priesthood, join Rev. Msgr. Ralph Stansley for this month’s discernment meeting, Sunday, May 22, 2016, at Our Lady of Good Counsel, 137 Upper Ferry Road, West Trenton, NJ from 4-6pm, as he shares his experiences of the priesthood, and leads a discussion about discernment and vocations. For further information and to register, please contact the Diocese of Trenton Office of Vocations at [email protected] or by calling 609-406-7449. It would be great to see you and hear how the Lord is working in your life! PAGE SEVEN ST. JOSEPH’S After months of preparation, consultation and prayer, the parish family of St. Joseph is about to embark on a capital campaign which is intended to meet our parish's current need to raise funds for needed repairs and upgrades to our parish plant. All families will be called upon to make a sacrificial gift in the form of a pledge, payable over a 36 – 60 month period. Only with the financial commitment of all families will we be able to reach our challenging goal of $3,000,000. Over the next several months you will be hearing more about the campaign and learning what you can do to help us be successful. The church belongs to all of us; only through sacrifice throughout the community can we achieve our goals. Therefore, all contributions, from the smallest to the largest, will be gratefully appreciated. Your decision is a personal one and should be made in good conscience and true Christian spirit. We realize that not everyone can make the same size gift; however, everyone can make the same size sacrifice. Our next meeting for the Campaign Leadership Committee meeting will be held on May 19th at 7:30 PM in the Parish Center Dining Room. All of the members of the committee are encouraged to complete their contacts and be ready to report on the results at the meeting. EXCERPT FROM “MERCY AND TRUTH SHALL MEET” BISHOP DAVID M. O’CONNELL, C.M. When I studied scholastic (medieval) philosophy in the seminary many years ago, I remember reading various philosophical definitions of truth. The one that made the most sense to me was that of St. Thomas Aquinas in his Summa Theologiae (ST): “truth is the conformity of the mind to that which exists in reality (ST I.16.1).” Notice that there are two parts to his definition: (1) that which exists in reality --- in other words, that which is; and, (2) the conformity of the mind, the intellect, to it. I will spare you a breakdown of philosophers’ reactions over the centuries, both “pro and con,” to Aquinas’ idea because it seems so obviously accurate to me and it is, after all, the definition I will use here and throughout this letter. Let me give you a simple example. I am typing on a laptop computer. It is not a typewriter or a tape recorder although I am typing on it and it is recording my ideas. It is not a personal computer (PC) although it is my personal possession and it is a computer. It is what is known everywhere as a “laptop computer.” That is what it is and how it is known. Back to the Lord Jesus. “I have come into this world to testify to the truth,” I quoted earlier from the Lord Jesus’ dialogue with Pontius Pilate. Elsewhere in the Gospels, the Lord Jesus reveals himself as “truth” when he says to Thomas, the Doubting Apostle, later in John’s Gospel: “I am the way and the truth and the life (John 14: 6).” Truth is, as we acknowledge, that which is, and our ability to see, comprehend, understand and conform our minds to it as it actually is: here, the Lord Jesus. ST. JOSEPH’S PAGINA OCHO MENSAJE DEL PARROCO Estimada Familia, Feliz cumpleaños a Nuestra Iglesia! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
