1 Corinthians 14:1 - St. Agatha Catholic Church
J ust as different Gospels have different memories of how Jesus "introduced Himself" to humanity, they have different memories of how people began to respond--to follow the call of discipleship. In Luke's Gospel, the first disciples only follow after an amazing catch of fish--being near Jesus brought them success, and they followed, wanting more...only to have to realize that "more" wasn't in the picture, but rather "giving up" was central. A "call story"-that of the prophet Isaiah--was the first reading for the weekend. In that reading, it was not material gain that attracted Isaiah, but a religious experience. So, two different ways people come to God are presented--some come from an experience of the Grandeur of God, others come because their material lives get better. All are welcomed, and lessons for each will follow--lessons that will form them and challenge them. And, then, there is Paul's letter, where so many who were in his churches had had NO call experience--so he recounts how Christ had appeared to different people, including himself, and says, in a sense, "let this be enough for you." So we see that some come to God out of an overwhelming experience of God, others out of the experience of a better life, and others are attracted to God by watching the lives of those who have been fortunate enough to have some sort of "convincing experience." Which is YOUR experience? It doesn't matter; we are all here! And we are all called to "follow." Such is the life of the seasoned disciple, such is the life of the committed disciple, and such is the life of the "accidental disciple," the humble one who hangs onto the coat tails of another and learns the discipline of love in that way. - Fr. - Padre Bill Axe “Make love your aim.” - 1 Corinthians 14:1 “Love never ends. ” - 1 Corinthians 13:8 To build and foster a Christian Community that offers the opportunity to experience God’s unconditional love and acceptance to all who come into contact with it. O ur readings today speak of the sinfulness and shortcomings of humanity. I am reading a book right now that speaks about how we as a culture have started to deny the fact that humanity is flawed. There is no such thing as sinfulness, just mistakes. It has had a very big influence on how American Catholics view sin. If you notice, there are fewer lines for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Yet our prophets today speak of the flaw within humanity and how our God sent His son to free us and lead us back. I'm not sure about you, but I know that if it wasn't for God's love and graces, I would be walking a very different road. Let's take time today to look at how we view sin and ourselves. God is gracious and loving and holds us when we are weak and need help. Let us help ourselves and each other as we travel this road called life.
