Patagonia Chilena: Historia To write about the Chilean Patagonia is an affirmation loaded with a sense of patriotism. Besides being a strong reality which grows day by day, it is a state of admiration to those men who became the great pioneers of the southern extreme, attracting hundreds of thousands of inhabitants from all over the world. There is Magallanes with its fiords defying tides; there is Paine with its towers sowing looking-glass abysses, with its emerald lakes where the sky itself can be gazed at; there is Nahuel Huapi, where Argentina has developed great towns and villages, as does also Chile with Frutillar, which adds to the geography the majesty of the Andes Mountain. Patagonia is unity; Patagonia is American fraternity, Patagonia is what it was, what it is and what it will be, a wonderful testimony of the new America united by progress and brotherhood. Proof of that is to see how it has emerged in Frutillar, day by day, in the midsts of the glaciar, of the volcanoes and of the poetry with its natural beauty, that has provoked in recent times, the highest expression of human creation, that is art, music, song, which are sublime forms of the expression of man. The concerts that have come to life inspired by the musical harmony of nature, in each note they create beauty, elevating the spirits in a symphony of sublime gathering which creates an unedited world to share an instant of gratitude to the Creator for the bestowal he gives us. That is why that land has blessed us for the effort of the pioneers, with the colonies of European origin which have made a new homeland in the free America. Patagonia is yesterday and is already tomorrow. Frutillar is in the musical scales of the wind, in the keynotes of the pianos, in the sensible tones of the violins, in the highs and lows which emerge from the soul making music, while the choral voices amplify its message. Frutillar is all that and much more, it is a new conjunction of nature and art in front of the mountain range that honors the homeland of Chile. Throughout its history the Chilean Patagonia has remained a desolated, inhospitable and virgin territory which resists human intervention. Since the prehispanic cultures, the Calle Calle river, in the city of Valdivia, has signaled the frontier between civilization and the indomitable nature that extends to the confines of the world. Asimismo, Enrique Campos Menéndez Frederic Lacroix, in his work published in 1841, History of Patagonia, states that “Patagonia extends from the North to South over a length of about four hundred and sixty five leagues, between the 35-38 and 53-54 degrees of southern latitude. Its western side starts at 38 degrees and the eastern side at 42 degrees of latitude south.” In the same sense, Raúl Rey Balmaceda published Historical Geography of Patagonia, in 1976 and concludes that “Patagonia includes the narrow strip of the Chilean coastline to the South of Valdivia, the Patagonian Andes and the plateaus and terraces that abase from them towards the Atlantic Ocean”. According to the Map of Patagonia drawn up by the Salesian Missions in 1916 “Patagonia limits in the north with Colorado river from the Atlantic to the Andes Mountain. In Chile, its northern border coincides with the north limit of the Llanquihue Province. Parallel 47, at the Pain Gulf, trace the line between the Northern Patagonia and the Southern Patagonia that stretches till the Cape Horn From a cultural perspective the Chilean Patagonia finds unity from the identity that its inhabitants have forged by facing an extremely hostile and unknown territory. The difficult settlement of the communities, in every historical period, has generated a character in its inhabitants marked by bravery, determination and legend. Isolation, rough climatic conditions and the inhospitable terrains have meant a permanent challenge for the Patagonian inhabitant. Even the theories about the origin of the word “Patagonia”, which distinguishes these southern lands, is related to the courage of the original indians that Hernando de Magallanes encountered in his expedition in the year 1520. Más allá del río Calle Calle, en la ciudad de Valdivia, se extendía un territorio desconocido y misterioso, cuyas condiciones difíciles 16 In his voyage journal Magallanes recorded that the indians of this area were taller, not only for the giant footprints found, but also for the strong character that these communities showed in their adaptation to the environment. The outlaw disposition of the native tribes intimidated the handful of adventurers and dyed the testimonies about these faraway latitudes with a component of fantasy. According to the observations of the Frenchman Alcides D’Orbigny in the 19th century, among the original population that inhabited the zone comprised between Valdivia and Cape Horn we find traits of cultural unity. Unlike the people from the Arauco region, the tribes of Patagonia were essentially nomads, of great mobility, who moved along the whole territory in their fishing, hunting and collecting tasks. The cultural and commercial exchange existing in Patagonia provided common elements among these indians, like their language tradition and the belief in another life. The arrival of the Spaniards in the 16th century did not mean major changes for the Chilean Patagonia. In spite of their military superiority, the conquerors did not establish settlements in these desolate lands. The leader of the conquest, Pedro de Valdivia, defined in 1553 the borders of the new civilization in the city that he named after himself. Beyond the Calle Calle, at the city of Valdivia, river lay an unknown and mysterious territory, whose savage conditions prevented the advancement of the settlement policy. First maps of the Chilean Patagonia under the Spaniard rule. impedían proseguir con la política de asentamientos. De este modo el mundo Therefore there was scarce presence of Spaniards in the territory between Valdivia and Cape Horn. Besides, the conquerors concentrated their dominions near the copper, gold and silver mines of the northern region which kept the western Chilean Patagonia in a wild state. Only after the English and Dutch pirates began to dominate the commercial route of the Strait of Magellan, the Spanish crown fortified the cities of Valdivia and Chiloé to prevent foreign presence in the threatened zone. In the mid 17th century the Catholic Church provided more resources to the Society of Jesus to evangelize the people of the New World. In this way the catholic world counteracted the surge of protestants in Europe. With this 17 catechizing zeal the missionaries travelled through the corners of the continent seeking for souls to convert. Beginning from 1670, the Jesuits ventured to the desolated lands of the Chilean Patagonia which extended from the city of Valdivia to the Strait of Magellan. By living together with the original inhabitants they became acquainted with their language, their traditions and their beliefs. Although their intention was to evangelize these nomad tribes, the Jesuits had to prevent as well the meeting between the indians and the protestant English and Dutch expeditions that frequently visited the patagonian fiords. In 1640 the procurators from the Society of Jesus elaborated a detailed geographic chart of the territory entitled Tabula Geographica Regni Chile. A great number of explorers travelled through the mysterious Patagonia and their reports delivered valuable scientific information about these desolated lands. Entre los tripulantes destacaba Charles Darwin, un joven naturalista cuya misión era desentrañar los secretos de estos paisajes desconocidos. members that frequently travelled through this confine of the world was the British Jesuit Thomas Falkner, who after establishing himself for forty years on these latitudes, in his work Description of Patagonia of 1774, translated into English the language of the Patagonian indians. His works also provide a detailed description of the tribes, their habits and customs, as well as of the existing flora and fauna. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the scientific expeditions travelled through the world seeking new fortunes to finance the imperial ambitions of the English and French monarchies. Among the crew members, Charles Darwin stood out, he was a young naturalist whose mission was to unravel the secrets of these unknown landscapes. In his studies he gives a detailed account of the botanical reserves of the indomitable nature that represents the Chilean Patagonia. Meanwhile, the Chilean Liberator Bernardo O’Higgins perceived, during his exile in Lima, that the Chilean sovereignty from Valdivia to the southern extreme was in danger. Those extensive and uninhabited territories were running the risk of being occupied by foreign powers given their strategic and commercial value. O’Higgins suspected that the reports of the scientific expeditions had awakened the greed of the European royal houses. Furthermore the British dominion over the Malvinas Islands, renamed as Falkland Islands, set a dangerous precedent. In a letter addressed to José Joaquín Prieto, supreme authority of Chile at the time, O’Higgins suggests a plan to populate the Chilean Patagonia. The Liberator of the Republic expresses that the estate must make the efforts to atract the Irish emigration towards Chile. In this way the zones vulnerable to foreign dominion would be populated. Médicos, profesores, agricultores, herreros, enfermeros y carpinteros alemanes poblaron los bordes costeros, los valles y las zonas precordilleranas. stated that this European immigration would bring progress, technology and culture, needed by the country. Coinciding with the vision of O’Higgins, the government of Manuel Bulnes developed a colonization policy to populate the territory. In practical terms, Chile was only occupied from La Serena to Valdivia, even though the Constitution of 1833 established the limits from the Atacama Desert to Cape Horn. In 1845 president Bulnes passed the first colonization law. The massive European emigration, motivated by the denigrating conditions of the Industrial Revolution, accounted for an important flow of colonizers. On a governmental mission, Bernardo Philippi travelled to Germany to recruit families willing to populate the Northern Patagonia, between Valdivia and Puerto Montt, taking advantageof the fact that in Patagonia Chilena: Historia En sus estudios entrega una detallada cuenta de las riquezas biológicas de la naturaleza indómita que caracteriza al área patagónica. 22 this zone the soil is more fertile than in the southern extreme. German doctors, teachers, farmers, blacksmiths, nurses and carpenters populated the coastline, the valleys and the zones near the mountain ranges. On an ambiance of peace and integration the colonization developed the economic, professional and cultural activity of the Chilean Patagonia. From 1846 to 1880, 4,322 immigrants arrived and joined the national life as Chilean citizens. During the 19th century the botanical briefs of Alexander Von Humbolt and Charles Darwin had great resonance in Europe. Cientific studies regarding the fertility of the soil determined that the northern Patagonia was in condition to develop horticulture and agriculture. Humboldt and Darwin’s conclusions increased the interest, specially in Germany, to populate the Chilean territory as settlers. The experience of the city of Frutillar, located on the shores of Lake Llanquihue, gathers all the elements of this process of human settlement in the adverse conditions of the Chilean Patagonia. The isolation, the climatic rigour and the indomitable nature posed an enormous challange to the German colonos who settled these virgin lands between Valdivia and Puerto Montt. From its founding on 1856, the community of Frutillar has been able to conciliate its development with the natural environment, thus laying the foundation for its survival, progress and culture. In this way Frutillar has become an example of identity and reknown tradition in the world. The Andes Mountain reserves one of its masterpieces for the Chilean Patagonia: Llanquihue Lake and its volcanoes Puntiagudo, Osorno and Tronador. Pueblos originarios de la Patagonia chilena Original inhabitants of Chilean Patagonia First human finds: The breaking of a paradigm El sitio arqueológico de Monte Verde, ubicado a 35 kilómetros al sudoeste de Puerto Montt, evidencia que un grupo humano habitó la Patagonia chilena hace aproximadamente 12.500 años, de acuerdo a las fechas calibradas con Carbono 14. The archeological site of Monte Verde, located 35 kilometers to the south-east of Puerto Montt, shows evidence that a human group inhabited the Chilean Patagonia aproximately 12,500 years ago, according to the dates measured with Carbon 14. A swamp of sediments, that covered the place, allowed the conservation of this remnant of the past. The archeological works of the Universidad Austral de Chile made possible to discover parts of houses, wooden artifacts, rests of vegetable food and animal bones. These elements make up the evidence of an early adaptation of man to the harsh conditions of Patagonia. Even more, in the deeper layers of the swamp, known as Monte Verde II, stones have been found that show possible traces of human work. There is no conclusive evidence on the subject. If they were wrought stones, the presence of man in Patagonia would extend back 33,000 years. The discoveries at Monte Verde and other anthropological deposits in the Americas such as Pedra Furada (Brazil) and Piedra Museo (Argentina) have challenged the predominant theory En lo profundo del bosque nativo es tan oscuro que difícilmente se puede leer una carta. In the deep native forest it is so dark that hardly a letter can be read. In the predominant language of the original inhabitants, wind and spirit share the same word since in both of them death does not take place. Based on the Clovis Culture, this hypothesis states that man entered the American territory aproximately 13,500 years ago through the Strait of Bering. Findings such as those of Monte Verde have given ground to a new theory about the early population of America, which places the date of entry between 23,000 to 50,000 years. At the same time it questions the theories about the routes of entry and the spreading of the communities through the continent. Within the community, one is all. Outside it, one is no one, like the tooth that falls from the mouth. The onas painted their bodies using color pigments to reflect their mood. As Campos Menéndez, an expert in the history of Patagonia, states “for them their body was all face”. The original inhabitants of the Chilean Patagonia did not develop the written word because the oral tradition was enough to treasure the accumulated wisdom. Fishermen, hunters and collectors were able to adapt themselves to the difficult conditions because they understood that nature has its codes and that it is vital to transmit this knowledge to ensure survival. In this way these nomad cultures named hills, lakes, rivers, and volcanos. From each name springs a legend that synthesizes the experiences of the communities that successfuly settled the Chilean Patagonia. Even though the majority of these indians disappeared, their speech remains alive as the nature that it denominates. In the 18th century the British Jesuit Thomas Falkner dedicated his life to study the unravel of the dominant language of Patagonia. These tribes believed in the next life and buried the dead with their dear possessions. Furthermore they celebrated public rites, to win the favor of the spirits. In the southern extreme of Chilean Patagonia the canoe men, like the chonos and the fueguinos, lived in kaowes, which were wooden and leather huts. After the discovery of America in 1492 many europeans undertook the voyage to the new world in the quest of fame and fortune. A very long journey towards the unknown separated these adventurers from their golden dreams. Caravels in disrepair, overcrowded on board and the ignorance of the routes made the venture even more difficult for the pioneers. Desde entonces estas tierras australes y misteriosas se conocieron como Patagonia On November the 1st, 1520, Hernando de Magallanes penetrated for the first time the strait which communicated the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. On this first navigation, slow and uncertain, the crew perceived each night the light of great fires, giving an indication of human presence. In a desolated beach of the Strait, Magallanes descended from the boat and erected a cross like testimony of his discovery. The prevailing cold and the infinite solitude tormented the handful of hungry adventurers that wandered through these distant latitudes. Following the fires that shone during the nights, the European knew the routine of the native tribes and were astonished by their courage. Shelter by their skins and leathers, these communities managed to adapt to an extremely hostile nature. Vulnerable and afraid, the crew of Magallanes avoided the encounter with the natives because they suspected that they were supernatural beings due to the footprints found, of apparent giants, that the chronicler Antonio Pigafetta named as “patagones”. Since then these southern and mysterious lands were known as Patagonia. “The coast of the strait is low. We call it the strait of Patagonia. Every half league there is a very safe port with excelent water, cedar wood, fishes, sardines, clams, and a sweet herb, like celery; also another one which is more bitter and that grows next to the springs. During many days it was the only thing we ate. I believe in the whole world there is not a better and more beautiful strait than this” Antonio Pigafetta, cronista de la expedición de Hernando de Magallanes en 1520. Antonio Pigafetta, chronicler of the expedition of Hernando de Magallanes in 1520. This daring adventure encouraged new expeditions. In 1545 Carlos V equipped six ships under the command of Sebastián Elcano, one of the 19 survivors of the crew that navigated around the world for the first time. However the fleet experimented difficulties during the voyage and when it was near Patagonia a violent storm returned them to the Atlantic. After many attempts they penetrated the Strait of Magellan and found a canoe, some whale ribs and a cross that had been erected by Magallanes. They did not establish contact with the indians because the crew was diminished and they feared a clash. Fifteen years later a third expedition entered into Patagonia and had regretable consequences. Simón de Alcazaba, a Portuguese serving the Spanish crown, commanded the fleet. Multiple setbacks preceded the arrival to the strait. They would not stand hunger and cold any more when a mutiny broke out that cost the life of Alcazaba. After the murder the rest of the crew aborted the mission and sailed off to Brazil seeking refuge. The conqueror of Chile aimed to populate the southernmost regions of the continent to extend his dominion from Valparaiso to the Strait of Magellan. With this purpose he recruited Juan Ladrillero to recognize and dominate the lands of the Chilean Patagonia. During the years 1537 and 1538 Ladrillero scouted the labyrinth of marine canals and he ventured into dense woods to retrieve information about the topography and its inhabitants. His voyage chronicles contributed to the development of the first cartography of the Patagonian archipelagos. In spite of the initiatives of settlement and dominion of the Strait, the commercial traffic between Spain and its colonies kept developing through the isthmus of Panama. The Strait of Magellan was still abandoned and in 1578 the English corsair Francis Drake used the passage to surprise the Spanish vessels loaded with gold and silver. The felonies of the pirate spread terror in the Spanish dominions of America. It became imperative to control the Strait before it was taken over by the corsairs. Thus the Spanish crown commended this task to Sarmiento de Gamboa. In spite of its efforts, the Spanish Crown did not succeed in creating a permanent human settlement in the southern end of the american continent. Patagonia Chilena: Historia Patagonia Chilena: Historia Ataque de unos patagones a unos exploradores europeos. Fight between patagonian indians and europeans expeditionaries. 37 After recognizing the Patagonian territory and studying the conditions of the Strait, Sarmiento de Gamboa sailed to Spain in 1592 to request the necessary funds for the fortification of the passage. Facing the threat of the pirates, the king Felipe II, decreed the foundation of the first city in Patagonia. From Spain 25 ships set sail with three thousand crew members, carefully selected, with the purpose of populating these desolated lands. The storms in the high seas, desertions and material failures attempted against the success of the expedition. Sarmiento de Gamboa was slowly being left alone and after two years of voyage he reached the Strait with a reduced contingent of three hundred men. Enduring cold and hunger, the expedition traced the streets of the future region of “Name of Jesus” in a desolate emplacement. Despite the efforts of Sarmiento de Gamboa, half of the colony deserted and returned to Spain. The few that remained, deprived of supplies and clothing, were totally abandoned when Sarmiento de Gamboa was taken prisoner by the English pirate Walter Raleigh. Then the battered community remained isolated, without resources nor hope. Slowly the colonizers began succumbing to the extreme conditions. Passing through the Strait, the English corsair Cavendish found the shore full of corpses and renamed the place as “Port of Hunger”. After this failure of the Spanish crown the corsairs took over the Strait of Magellan dominating the commercial route. In 1616 the Dutch pirate Le Maire discovered a new passage to the Pacific, more direct and safe. He named it Cape Horn in tribute to Hoorn, his hometown. However what really obsessed the corsairs who dominated these solitudes was the fabulous City of the Caesars. The legend told that an Inca community had sought refuge in the Patagonian archipelagos to found the richest region in America. Between albatrosses and precious gems, the City of the Caesars offered a delicious life to its inhabitants. Gold decorated the houses and the soil was so fertile that potatoes were the size of water melons. Avid of treasures, the pirates ventured into the Patagonian canals and fiords looking for wealth. The City of the Caesars would reward the hardships and in this venture the corsairs did not hesitate. After countless shipwrecks and setbacks, the pirates had to accept that the gold only shone in their sleepless nights. Even though they could not discover “El Dorado” of the confines of the world, these reckless expeditions provided valuable cartographic information of the Chilean Patagonia. In 1739 England and Spain went to war over worldwide hegemony of their overseas possessions. The English fleet set sail towards Patagonia in 1740 with a fleet of eight ships. Among them was the frigate “Wager” with 28 cannons and 160 crew members, commanded by John Byron. During the voyage through the Pacific they suffered seven weeks of storms. Once they reached Patagonia, the non-existent port infrastructure and the precarious nautical cartography of its islands and canals marked the tragical destiny of the expedition. As so many other vessels had succumbed to the ferocity of the sea, the frigate “Wager” sank on may 14, 1741 on the south of Golfo de Penas, smashing against the rocks and crags. The few survivors were able to swim to an island that was christened with the name of the ship. The captain of the “Wager” inspired a outstanding book written by his grandson, the famous writer Lord Byron. Besides telling the details of this tragical voyage, the account of Lord Byron constitutes the first detailed description of the western Patagonia. In small, isolated villages they founded evangelizing centers known as “reductions”. In spite of the climatic distress and the hostility of some tribes, these missionaries did not give up in their mission to convert the indian population to Catholicism. Their stay in the Chilean Patagonia provided additional cartographic material regarding the Patagonian fiords, in addition to a series of documents about the behavior of the native people. Scientific expeditions The Century of Lights motivated the scientific expeditions towards the Patagonia. In safer ships, with detailed maps and more precise navigation instruments, the scientists arrived in these inhospitable lands. The European monarchies with imperial ambitions, such as the English and the French, encouraged these expeditions to find new wealth to finance their overseas conquests. Patagonia Chilena: Historia Towards the end of the 18th century captain James Cook went through the islands south of Tierra del Fuego looking for a southern continent in the confine of the world. In 1830 Orundellico was 13 years old and lived in a yagan community with his father, mother, brothers and some uncles. In that time the patagonian indians took profit of the white men arrival for exchanging dogs and dehydrated fish for brilliant stones and metallic objects. When they found out that a great European ship navigated the waters, his family took three canoes and went to meet them. They carried fish and guanaco leather to barter. Suddenly the foreigners, under the command of Captain Fitz Roy, pulled up Orundellico from one of the canoes and set him onboard the “Beagle”. As means of payment they tossed over a big and shiny nacre button. With the young yagan as part of the merchandise, the white men disappeared into the horizon and called him Jemmy Button. Once on deck they changed his clothes and they taught him to eat with fork and knife. When they returned to England, a series of scientists verified that Jemmy was apt to be educated. Then he learned some words in English and met, in a private audience, King William IV and Queen Adelaide. The English government offered an annuity to carry on with his studies. However Jemmy rejected the offer because he missed his lands and his solitudes. A second expedition by Fitz Roy left him in his place of origin in Patagonia and Orundellico met again his family after disappearing for over three years. La República de Chile adopta política colonizadora The Republic of Chile adopts a colonizing policy Patagonia Chilena: Historia The women of the “colonos” are in charge of the provisions and keep the smoked pig, the bacon, sausages and chucrut in the winter sheds. The extensive desolated territories of the Chilean Patagonia, of great strategic and commercial value, ran the risk of being occupied by foreign powers. During his exile in Lima in 1830, Bernardo O’Higgins, the Liberator of the Chilean Republic, suspected that the information of the scientific expeditions had waked up the greed of the European real houses. The British dominion of “Las Malvinas”, rebaptized as Falkland Islands, marked a dangerous precedent for the Chilean sovereignty in the South end. Therefore, the Liberator of the Republic suggests to the government a plan to colonize the Chilean Patagonia. In a letter addressed to José Joaquín Prieto, Chilean president at that time, O’Higgins stated “that the government should make the efforts to attract the Irish emigration towards Chile”. In this way the vulnerable zones to the foreign dominion would be populated. O’Higgins assured that this European immigration would bring the progress, the technology and the culture that the country needed. The fragile Chilean sovereignty in southern lands was a matter of worry for O’Higgins until the end of his days. Witnesses of his death stated that the last word he pronounced was “Magallanes”. In the decade of 1840 the government of Manuel Bulnes encouraged a colonization policy to populate the territory of the Chilean Patagonia. At that time was only populated from La Serena to Concepción though the 1833 Constitution fixed the Chilean borders from the Atacama Desert to Cape Horn. On September 21, 1843, Chile took possession of the Strait of Magellan under the command of the English captain Juan Williams and the German naturalist Bernardo Philippi. The crew members of the expedition travelled onboard the Goleta Ancud and upon their arrival founded Fort Bulnes guaranteeing the Chilean sovereignty on the place. Since 1833 the naturalist Bernardo Eumon Philippi explored the Chilean Patagonia unraveling the secrets of these lonely regions. Quickly he fell in love with the land he discovered with each footstep and became engaged in its destiny. Besides participating as a volunteer in the taking over of the Strait of Magellan, Philippi discovered the Lake Llanquihue. This lake, of difficult access, was feared by the indians because they believed it to be haunted. Philippi supported the colonizing policy promoted by the authorities to populate the territory. He then contacted his relatives and friends in Germany so they could conduct the arrival of new colonizers. On a first stage he was able to bring nine German families to settle near Osorno. In 1845 president Bulnes passed the first colonization law. The massive European emigration, motivated by the denigrating conditions of the Industrial Revolution, accounted for an important flow of colonizers. On a governmental mission, Bernardo Philippi travelled to Germany to recruit families willing to populate the Chilean Patagonia. After a great work colonizing the south of Chile, Philippi died in the Strait of Magellan, victim of a indian uprising. To reanimate the flow of Germans, Vicente Pérez Rosales was named colonizing agent to populate the zone between Osorno and Puerto Montt. At that time the south of the country counted with settlements in the forts of Valdivia and Chiloé. Pérez Rosales moved to Hamburg in 1855 to register more immigrants and embark them to Chile. Doctors, teachers, farmers, blacksmiths, nurses and carpenters endured the long journey from Germany. These colonizers came to stay because they brought with them tools and capital to acquire and exploit the lands of the region. “The magnificent view rewarded me amply the tiredness of the trip. The water of this lake is clear like that of Lake Geneva in Switzerland, its area is of seven leagues more or less of length, by some eight in width, so that I could not distinguish the opposite shore. It has like that one the snowy Alps, the Andes mountain range which rises from its eastern shores with a volcano covered with snow down to half of its height and it enters into its waters.” The voyage from Hamburg to Puerto Montt was the first challenge that the settlers faced. In overcrowded sailingships, the navigating conditions became extremely difficult when facing the feared Cape Horn. As the winds and the storms shook the vessels, the food got scarce as well as the water. 58 When they finally arrived in Puerto Montt the colonizers expressed their satisfaction for having survived the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean and the deadly sicknesses like cholera, diarrhea, scurvy and scabies. At the same time the arrival to the Chilean Patagonia meant the beginning of a new stage in their lives. The conquest of the land The first generation of settlers had to open tracks in the dense jungles, where the sun had never penetrated, to get to their assigned farming grounds. Only with bodily strength, the energy of the character and solidarity they could successfully settle in the Patagonia. A child of these southern lands, Pichi Juan made his living knocking down the trees that got in the way of progress. This indian of medium height, dark complexion and black hair was as smart as a cougar and knew the secrets kept by the jungle. Vicente Pérez Rosales, chief of the colonization, trusted in his wisdom and invited him to participate in the exploration caravans. Together with the settlers he penetrated through the woods whose shadows did not allow to read a letter. Pichi Juan marked the way and there was no danger of getting lost or starving. This brave indian knew how to extract honey from the trees, hunt animals and fish in streams. He also knew the cougar’s routine and prevented its encounter. At any rate the Chilean State supported them in the settlement process. In addition to handing over the lands, the government supplied them with provisions for two years and equipped them with oxen, cows and seeds for sowing. The settlers were free of taxes for 20 years and were not eligible for military service. The state also financed the construction of churches and schools, and provided medical attention. The German communities settled within a short distance from each other to facilitate the communications. This familiar emplacement replaced the Iberian landholder structure that was dominant in the zone. The regional nuances, distinctive of rural Germany, ended up being erased in the Chilean Patagonia. It only remained as a cultural marking line the religious creed. The women took care of provisions for winter and put away the smoked pork, the bacon, the sausages and the souerkraut, products that were elaborated according to the German tradition. The majority of these immigrants could read and write, while among the Chileans and natives about 70% were illiterate. In a bay bathed by blue waters and facing immense volcanoes, president Manuel Montt founded Villa de Frutillar on november 23, 1856. The first houses were built in the hills near the shores due to the swampy soil that surrounded the lake. Simultaneously the towns of Puerto Varas and Llanquihue were founded. In 1860 there were already 1,570 German colonizers in the region between Valdivia and Puerto Montt. Initially the only ways of communication and commerce were aquatic. The navigation acquired an important activity between Frutillar, Puerto Octay, Llanquihue, Puerto Varas and Ensenada with the cargo and passenger transportation. The settlers dedicated themselves to agricultural and industrial tasks such as the functioning of dairies, mills, distilleries, leatheries and some stores that sold supplies and implements. Being an obligated passage in the route between Osorno and Puerto Montt, Frutillar developed commerce. Motivated by the interests of numerous families from Frutillar, whose children could not attend any educational institution, the pedagogue Jacobo Junginger founded the German School in 1913. This boarding school received the students whose parents resided outside the town. Convinced of the value of education, Junginger himself had already founded the choir Liederkranz in 1894. In 1907 the railroad arrived to Frutillar Alto which brought farming machinery, fertilizers, industrial crops and the orientation towards selective cattle breeding. The settlers founded the Red Cross, the Fire Department and the German Club. In 1973 the German Colonial Museum was built as an example of the work of the settlers. In the last twenty years Frutillar has exploited the touristic activity preserving the German colonial urban style. With this purpose it has developed the hotel and gastronomical sector. In the year 2002 the “Nautical Club” inaugurated its port installations which increased the water sports in the bay of Frutillar even hosting international competitions like the “Frutillar Match Race Cup” Regatta which gathers outstanding South American competitors. In this way the value of Frutillar not only rests upon its landscapes, but also presents itself as a magnific example of culture and progress of the Chilean Patagonia. “Whenever a moment in Patagonia shines, I stop walking and write some words in my pocket notebook. Then I reassume my way, as if nothing had occurred. When the day comes to an end, I reorganize the accumulated notes in the paper. Suddenly the loose words become familiar and each paragraph revives the sparkles of this fascinating lands. Thus the story awakes and Patagonia can be read”. “How extraordinary the Andes Mountain Range is! I found myself at 6,500 meters of altitude, at the birth of a snow storm. All the peaks threw off snow like volcanoes and it seemed to me that the whole mountain started to boil...” Letter of Antoine de Saint Exupéry to his mother. Antoine de Saint Exupéry, author of the famous book “The Little Prince”, arrived in Patagonia in 1929, piloting his own airplane, a Laté 25. During two years he opened the Patagonian skies with reconnaissance flights, inspection rounds and raids to Tierra del Fuego. Sometimes he flew so low that he could chat with the shepherds. At the time airplanes were guided by visual references like a river, a forest or a church that became the “turn on the next corner”. He flew up to 18 hours a day, even by night, which inspired his book Night Flight in 1931. It was not easy to fly in the Patagonian climate. The pilots covered their chests and backs with newspapers to protect themselves from the wind and the cold. In june of 1930 his comrade Guillaumet disappeared in the mountains during a storm. Saint Exupéry flew over the Andes tiressly looking for any sign of his friend. Nobody wanted to accompany him on a land excursion, due to the wisdom of the natives which says that the mountain does not return the men in winter. Then Saint Exupéry writes as imaginary letter to his friend, which later would be a part of his book Land of Men. The storm whips the Beagle “After spending six days in the Wigwam bay, retained by the bad weather, we embarked to the sea. Captain Fitz Roy wished to approach the west coast of Patagonia through the Cape Horn. Nevertheless on the high seas we are assaulted by a succession of storms. The infuriated currents drag us without course and we do not know with exactitude where we are. Our horizon disappears behind the foam clouds that the wind raises. The sea has a terrible aspect and seems an immense oscillating plain, covered by snow. While our ship fights tenaciously, the albatrosses, with their extended wings, seem to play with the wind. The poor Beagle shakes among the waves and per moments refuses the captain orders. The crew is tired and there are no more dry suits to change. Exhausted we approached the Cape Horn and we found a refuge to shelter. How delicious is a calm night after been for such a long time the toy of the infuriated elements!” Based on the chronicle of Charles Darwin. Cape Horn, 1834. Adaptación de la crónica de Charles Darwin. He descended more than 4,000 meters without mountain equipment, practically blinded by the radiance of the ice. With lonely and discreet habits, the Chucao remains hidden inside the thickness of the native jungle. It is complicated to see them, but not to hear its song. The condor and its kingdom between the earth and the sky Solitario rapaz de Los Andes, el cóndor viaja por corrientes invisibles dibujando círculos en el cielo. A lonely rapacious one of the Andes, the condor travels through invisible currents drawing circles in the sky. With three meters of breadth, its silent wings slice off the clouds in a flight that knows no boundaries. The mountain is its homeland and in the cliffs of the high summits, where nobody else can reach, it accomodates its brood. During its displacements the condor scrutinizes the vermin while the ice floes of the mountain cool down its belly. The male has a white feather necklace and a red comb, the female is smaller and has no comb. Both have a curved beak and a wrinkled face. By the disposition of its claws it is impossible for it to pick up something from the ground, because of which it feeds only on dead animals. Patagonia Chilena: Historia According to the Patagonian legend whoever was going through a forest and hears its song from the right side, the auguries would be good. If the song comes from the left it means that the future comes laden with disgrace. To remedy the bad auguries, it is necessary to insult this soothsaying bird and to wear a piece of clothing inside out. In a piece of cloth, I keep the secrets, that the sea and the stars, revealed me. By the end of the XV century, the wealth of the European nations depended on the oceanic commerce. To know the routes that others ignored, guaranteed the sea superiority and the chance of appropriating the new wealth. In the Seville archives, the Spanish crown kept under jealous guards the maps drawn from the first trips of Cristobel Columbus. By a real decree the reproduction of those cartographies was banned and only the trustful captains could consult their information. In the XVI century, the English and the French offered rewards in gold for smuggled maps that detailed the coasts of the new world.
