Dear Asamblea Participants,
Our national Asamblea constitutes for us the most important leadership development and decision making event for
NDLON. We hope it will be very useful for participants and for member organizations. In order for it to be beneficial to you,
we respectfully ask you take these responsibilities into consideration as participants and delegations:

Understand the objectives of the National Assembly
Read the program in detail
Be punctual to every work session
Avoid side conversations and socializing during work sessions
Designate a person that is responsible for your delegation
Remain in close contact with your delegation, especially during decision making processes. Each delegation has a
right to one vote.
Respect the speakers and presenters
Collaborate to ensure each day begins and finishes on time
Turn off cellphones & don’t surf the internet unless absolutely necessary
Participate in all work sessions and workshops to get the most out of the convening
Respect and keep the facilities clean
Participate as a volunteer in the different activities, if requested
Don’t stay up too late. If you decide to go out, do it in moderation so that you are fully awake and ready to participate
in all Asamblea activities
Be open to learning, teaching, getting to know and sharing with others
Reproduce and disseminate agreements, your experiences, and, above all, get involved in the implementation of the
programmatic work
Have fun and participate in all of the cultural events

NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OBJECTIVES:
1. Send a clear message that will be heard in all the halls of power: Not one more deportation, not one more labor abuse,
ICE out of LA, DACA for all.
2. Strengthen organizations and the leadership of the day laborer community, and their role and place in the struggle for
labor rights and immigrant rights.
3. Build a shared analysis of the current moment to understand the intersections between immigration policy, the
economy, civil rights, race relations, gender and sexual orientation, the criminal justice system and the modern labor
practices.
4. Strengthen our internal governing system and define NDLON’s programmatic priorities for the next 2 years.
5. Encourage alliances with sister organizations, the labor movement, academic institutions, the faith community and
civil rights organizations.
6. Promote art and culture as tools to educate, organize, encourage unity and solidarity, and for social transformation.

WELCOME TO THE 7TH ASAMBLEA NACIONAL OF THE
NATIONAL DAY LABORER ORGANIZING NETWORK
When we last came together, the Supreme Court affirmed day laborers’ right to look for work in public in a court fight that started 18
years ago in Southern California, before our network was even formed.
This time, we await a decision from the President, who is on the verge of making an announcement that will either include or exclude
workers from the expansion of relief. Such decision comes in response to the unprecedented pressure campaigns have focused toward
the White House in the past year.
We did not wait the 18 years for the Supreme Court to make a decision before we returned to the corners for work or to fight another
city trying to disappear us. And we have not waited for the President to pick up his pen to demand the right for people to stay in the
communities we all have built and the places we call home.
We are not spectators in the world but active craftsmen of reality. Our struggles and our efforts help define the world we live in while
shaping the conditions we confront.
For more than a decade, Washington, D.C., has talked about a path to citizenship at the same time it has erected the checkpoints of
“enforcement” and the razor wire of compromise on any way forward.
But the path to citizenship isn’t the result of a bill in Congress that has yet to pass. It is a road we walk every day. Because the
bedrock of citizenship is active participation in the democratic process. Some of us desire actual citizenship that comes with the right
to vote in this country and others want to be able to work in peace and visit our families back home without restriction. But to win
either requires that we be active, that we accept the responsibility to be our own agents of change and demand the right to represent
ourselves in the process.
This asamblea is different because the times require us to be different. We have survived the recession but the economy is not the
same. We have strong worker centers but our cities are changing. We have responded to the storms in New York and New Orleans
and know there are more disasters ahead.
Now more than ever it is important that we take charge of our lives and our movements. There is a saying that if you are not at the
table, you’re on the menu. During this assembly we will work together to ensure our place in history, to develop and better ourselves
as leaders in an evolving movement. To accept the responsibility to inform ourselves about what is happening in the world and the right
to be part of the decisions that shape our lives.

This workshop will focus on the building of relationships at the international level in order to learn and share organizing experiences.
The facilitators will present a report from their visit to El Salvador and Guatemala where they met with unions that organize informal
workers in the construction industry. They will also provide information about a study they carried out of organizations of immigrants
and day laborers in Mexico and Central and South America.

3. We’re Neighbors (Language Exchange)
Somos Vecinos (We are Neighbors) is a language exchange program between English speakers and Spanish speakers. Through this
program we connect with our community to learn and teach, in addition to recruiting allies for our campaigns. CASA Latina will
provide the curriculum so that participants can start developing their own language exchange program similar to Somos Vecinos at
their centers and communities, or adopt a similar program that meets their needs.

4. The United Workers Congress and the Attack from the Right Wing
Worker centers have played a pioneering role in the growing movement for higher wages. Their increasing political success has
drawn the attention of corporations whose brands have been tarnished and who are threatened by the prospect of having to pay their
workers higher wages. This workshop will give an overview of the worker center movement to fight for a fair economy and shed light
on corporations using a smokescreen to hide their identity. Attendees will get a copy of the recently released United Workers Congress
Briefing Paper, and will participate in a conversation about what current and/or future series of actions exist to support low-wage
workers and the fight against these worker center attacks.

Workshop Descriptions
Wage theft is a problem that affects day laborers all over the country. In this workshop we will analyze different strategies to address
the problem of wage theft, including legislation and organizing. Facilitators will provide updated information about successful
organizing campaigns and challenges faced in California, New York, and other areas.

5. How to Use Social Media to Promote Day Laborer Centers
This workshop will be an introduction to different social media tools to promote & market day labor centers. We will provide tips on
best practices, messaging and tips on how to use technology to maximize publicity and attract more employers to centers. Workshop
will be a hands-on experience, making sure all participants leave workshop with social media accounts and opportunities to create
and publish while in the workshop. Recommended for participants to bring their laptops & smartphones for use and demonstration
during workshop.

8. Local Organizing Committees as an integral part of the struggle for immigrant rights
After the passage of HB 87 in Georgia in 2011, rural and small communities across the state of Georgia began to form organizing
committees. These committees were formed to provide information and protection of families facing a new anti-immigrant law. Years
later the committees continue, serving as a strong force to not only defend but transform the conditions people face in Georgia and
beyond.

Today, over 160 localities across the country have enacted policies to end or substantially limit local cooperation with the failed
“Secure Communities” program (S-Comm). S-Comm uses local law enforcement to extend a deportation dragnet that encourages
racial profiling and warrantless detentions, and has contributed to record deportations. This workshop will discuss how we can work
together to stop S-Comm through city, county or even state-wide campaigns to win TRUST Act policies that break ICE’s immigrant
holds & restore trust in immigrant communities.

10. Workforce Skills Development in the Day Labor Community
A workforce development program is crucial for day laborers to be able to obtain better jobs and for organizations to strengthen their
training systems. This workshop will provide information about different models for workforce development trainings in New York and
California, and discuss how to create new training programs in constuction, carpentry and other areas.

11. OSHA 10: Introduction to OSHA & Health Hazards*
This training provides workers with the tools needed to identify the dangers to which they are exposed in the construction industry
and to seek to improve conditions on the job by exercising their right to have a safe and healthy workplace. In addition to learning
their OSHA rights, participants will learn how to file an OSHA complaint when necessary. This training wil be facilitated by authorized
trainers, and all participants who complete the 10 hours of training will receive a certificate and OSHA 10 card.

This workshop teaches the basic elements to promote gender equality in our centers and in our day laborer struggle. It gives us a
basic guide to build a safe environment to work and organize regardless of gender, religion, race, skin color or sexual orientation.
The content of this workshop offers the tools to lay the foundation to eradicate sexual harassment from our centers and in all our
organizing spaces. The workshop also presents concrete recommendations that will help guarantee the growth and development of all
people by promoting their leadership.

6. Labor Rights Violations, the POWER Act & U-Visas
This interactive workshop will provide an introduction to the U Visa (also known as the “crime victim” visa) and the Power Act. We
will discuss what the U Visa is, what types of common labor rights violations make a person eligible to apply for it, and how it can be
used as a tool in organizing campaigns. We’ll also talk about what the Power Act would do to expand U Visa eligibility to more workers
and how the Power campaign seeks to expand eligibilty for U Visas and promote other strategies to prevent immigration issues from
interfering with workers organizing for their rights.

7. “We’re Criminals:” The Criminalization of Day Laborers and Immigrant Communities
As criminal records are more and more the line that bars people from our community from inclusion in society, it is no different within
the immigraiton system. In a racially biased criminal justice and policing system, it has become necessary to develop new strategies
and messaging to defend against deportations of people with records. This workshop will look at expereriences and examples of
community organizing to prevent the deportation of community members with criminal records.

Earlier this year a group of current and formerly undocumented people came together to produce a series of recommendations to
the Obama Administration. In their ground breaking report they not only provided concrete policy recommendations, they furthered
the argument that directly affected people need to have a seat at the table and are fully capable of being more than story tellers and
mobilizers.

10. We Disobey to Demand Inclusion: Civil Disobedience
With the debate on immigration reform largely dominated by DC Beltway advocacy groups, undocumented people have had to
take dramatic measures to insert ourselves into the debate. The act of non-violent civil disobedience has been a powerful tool for
transforming the debate and participants. We will also talk about the recent actions declaring that ‘I Am My Own Best Advocate.’
This workshop will feature community leaders who have participated in these types of actions, reflecting and providing concrete
information on how it was done.

Erika Andiola
DRM Action Coalition
Erika is originally from Durango, Mexico but immigrated to Mesa, Arizona when she was 11 years old together with her family. Erika
is one of the co-founders of DRM Capitol Group and the Arizona Dream Act Coalition (ADAC). As President and lead organizer of the
coalition, she helped mobilize hundreds of students to fight for the passage of the DREAM Act legislation. Andiola graduated from
Arizona State University with a B.A. degree in Psychology in 2009 and used her advocacy to stop her own mother’s deportation.
Maria Elena Durazo
Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor (AFL-CIO)
Maria Elena is the first Latina to hold such an important position among all the unions of the nation. The daughter of Mexican
immigrant farm workers, Maria Elena learned what it means to work under bad conditions and without benefits. Her parents would
migrate from Oregon to California with Maria Elena and her nine siblings to work in the fields in search of everyday sustenance.
Raymond Pocino
Vice-President of Laborers International Union of North America (LIUNA)
A member of LIUNA for more than 50 years, as the LIUNA Vice President and Eastern Regional Manager, Mr. Pocino directs and
oversees activities that affect the working lives of some 40,000 laborers in the New Jersey, Delaware, New York City and Long Island
geographical area. As a LIUNA Vice President, Mr. Pocino serves as a trustee of the Laborers-Employers Cooperation and Education
Trust, and the Laborers Health and Safety Trust.
Sergio Rascon
Laborers International Union of North America (LIUNA)
Sergio Rascón, Business Manager of Local 300 in Los Angeles, was elected Vice President of LIUNA. Rascón became an agent of
Local 300 in 1984. In 1989, he was elected to the Executive Board and has served as the Assistant Business Manager and President.
He has become involved in more political races than in any time in its prior history, supporting progressive political campaigns and
actions in its members’ interest.
Tom Saenz
President and General Counsel, Mexican-American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF)
Thomas A. Saenz is the President and General Counsel of MALDEF, where he leads the civil rights organization’s five offices in
pursuing litigation, policy advocacy, and community education to promote the civil rights of Latinos living in the United States. He
previously spent 12 years at MALDEF practicing civil rights law as a staff attorney, regional counsel, and vice president of litigation.
He served as MALDEF’s lead counsel in successfully challenging California’s anti-immigrant Prop. 187. Saenz graduated from Yale
College and Yale Law School, and he clerked for two federal judges before initially joining MALDEF in 1993.

Former United States Secretary of Labor
Secretary Hilda L. Solis was confirmed as Secretary of Labor on February 24, 2009, becoming the first Latina to serve in the United
States Cabinet. Prior to confirmation as Secretary of Labor, Secretary Solis represented the 32nd Congressional District in California,
a position she held from 2001 to 2009. In the Congress, Solis’ priorities included expanding access to affordable health care,
protecting the environment, and improving the lives of working families.
Jose Antonio Vargas
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, filmmaker, and the founder of Define American
In June 2011, the New York Times Magazine published a groundbreaking essay Jorge Antonio wrote in which he revealed and
chronicled his life in America as an undocumented immigrant, stunning media and political circles and attracting international
coverage. Since then, he has testified at a United States Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on immigration reform, and written
and directed Documented, a documentary film on his undocumented experience.

FlyAway Shuttle –
FlyAway departs every hour, on the hour, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. You can
purchase tickets online or in person. The ride costs $10 one-way Visa,
MasterCard, or American Express Debit or Credit Cards Only (No Cash
Accepted). In minimal traffic it takes about 30 to 40 minutes to get to the
airport (and vice versa).
From LAX:
All FlyAway buses drop off passengers on the Upper/Departures Level
at each terminal. Passengers board buses on the Lower/Arrivals Level
curbside in front of each terminal under the green “FlyAway, Buses and
Long Distance Vans” sign

Airport Shuttle bus to the Transit Center, and there catch the

Big Blue Bus:
The Big Blue Bus line goes primarily to areas west of UCLA, and hence is the first choice if you want to go to Santa Monica, Venice,
Pacific Palisades, the Getty Center etc. They also operate an express line that takes you from Santa Monica to downtown LA. The fare on
these buses is $1.00. You can catch the Big Blue Buses on Westwood boulevard at the south entrance of the campus.
MTA – mta.net:
These buses go west of UCLA to Beverly Hills, Hollywood, downtown LA, Burbank, et. The regular fare is $1.50. You can catch lines 2, 3,
and 302 west of the campus, behind the Saxon Suites. Other lines can be caught on Wilshire and Westwood, or east of the campus on
Hilgard.
Culver City Buses:
These buses go south of UCLA.

Lodging for participants who requested it, and were approved, has been arranged at UCLA’s Sunset Village dormitories. Check in for
lodging is located in Covel Commons Lobby. Check in is 4pm on your arrival day. All front desks are open 24 hours a day.
Participants will be sharing double-occupancy rooms (two twin beds) with either private or shared baths. All rooms are air-conditioned
and non-smoking. All include internet, cable television, daily maid service, sufficient bedding and bathroom supplies. Bathroom
amenities include linens, soaps, shampoos, and lotions. Hair dryers and irons are not provided, however, one can be checked out at the
front desk.
Check out is 11am on your departure day. Room keys must be returned to the front desk upon check-out. Late check-out without prior
front desk approval will result in additional charges, so please be sure to check out on time.
On your departure day, please be sure to bring down all of your belongings from your room.

OBJETIVOS DE LA ASAMBLEA NACIONAL:
1. Enviar un mensaje claro que se escuche en todos los recintos del poder: Ni una deportación más, ni un abuso laboral
más, ICE fuera de Los Angeles, DACA para todos y todas.
2. Fortalecer las organizaciones y el liderazgo de la comunidad jornalera, su rol y lugar en la lucha por los derechos
laborales y los derechos de los y las inmigrantes.
3. Construir un análisis compartido del momento actual para entender las intersecciones entre la política migratoria, la
economía, los derechos civiles, las relaciones raciales, de género y orientación sexual, el sistema de justicia criminal y
las prácticas laborales modernas.
4. Fortalecer el gobierno interno y definir las prioridades programáticas de la Red Nacional para los próximos 2 años
5. Fomentar las alianzas con organizaciones hermanas, con el movimiento laboral, entidades académicas, comunidad de
fe y organizaciones de derechos civiles.
6. Promover el arte y la cultura como herramientas para educar, para organizar, para fomentar la unidad y la solidaridad y
para la transformación social.
BIENVENIDOS Y BIENVENIDAS A LA 7a ASAMBLEA DE LA
RED NACIONAL DE JORNALEROS Y JORNALERAS
La última vez que estuvimos todos y todas juntos/as, la Corte Suprema afirmó el derecho de la comunidad jornalera de buscar trabajo en
áreas públicas en un caso legal que comenzó en el sur de California antes de que nuestra red se formara.
Esta vez, estamos esperando la decisión del Presidente, quien está a punto de anunciar si va a incluir o excluir a trabajadores/as en la
expansión del alivio administrativo. Dicha decisión viene en respuesta a las campañas de presión sin precedentes que se han enfocado
en la Casa Blanca en el último año.
Pero no esperamos 18 años a que la Corte Suprema tomara una decisión para regresar a las esquinas en busca de empleo o luchar
en contra de ciudades que nos querían hacer desaparecer. Y no hemos esperado a que el Presidente tome acción para demandar el
derecho de la gente de permanecer en las comunidades que hemos construido y en los lugares a los que llamamos hogar.
No somos espectadores y espectadoras del mundo, sinó artesanos/as activos/as de nuestra realidad. Nuestra lucha y nuestro esfuerzo
ayudan a definir el mundo en el que vivimos y al mismo tiempo forman las condiciones que enfrentamos.
Por más de una década, se nos ha hablado de un camino hacia la ciudadanía, al mismo tiempo que se han establecido retenes de
“aplicación de ley” y obstáculos espinosos que ponen en compromiso cualquier esfuerzo de avance.
Pero el camino hacia la ciudadanía no es el resultado de una propuesta en el Congreso, que aún tiene que ser aprobada. Es el camino
que caminamos a diario. Porque el fundamento de la ciudadanía es la participación activa en el proceso democrático. Algunos/as de
nosotros/as deseamos una ciudadanía con la cual tengamos el derecho de votar en este país y otros/as quieren poder trabajar en paz y
visitar a sus familias en sus países de origen sin ninguna restricción. Pero ganar cualquiera de ellas requiere ser activos/as, aceptar la
responsabilidad de ser nuestros/as agentes de cambio y demandar el derecho de representarnos a nosotros/as mismos/as en el proceso.
Esta Asamblea es diferente porque los tiempos nos obligan a ser diferentes. Hemos sobrevivido la recesión, pero la economía no es la
misma. Tenemos centros de trabajo fuertes, pero las ciudades están cambiando. Hemos respondido a las tormentas en New York y New
Orleans y estamos listos/as para ayudar a nuestras comunidades en futuros desastres.
Ahora más que nunca, es importante que tomemos control de nuestras vidas y de nuestros movimientos. Hay un dicho que dice que si
no estamos en la mesa, estamos en el menú. Durante esta Asamblea trabajaremos juntos/as para asegurar nuestro lugar en la historia,

Somos Vecinos es un programa de intercambio de lenguas entre personas que hablan inglés y personas que hablan español. A través

4. El Congreso de Trabajadores Unidos y los ataques de la derecha
Los centros de trabajadores, particularmente los centros de jornaleros, han jugado un papel clave en los movimientos para los
derechos de los trabajadores e inmigrantes. Este taller proveerá una vista general del movimiento de los centros para luchar para
una economia justa y cómo el exito politico ha atraido la atención de las corporaciones que se sienten amenazados por la posibilidad
de tener que pagarle sueldos mas altos a sus trabajadores. También se hablará de como la derecha ha enfocado en los centros de
jornaleros, aprendiendo de la experiencia de los ataques por Judicial Watch en el centro de Macehualli en Arizona. Los participantes
recibirán una copia de un estudio reciente del Congreso de Trabajadores Unidos y participarán en una conversación acerca de que tipo
de acciones existen para apoyar a los trabajadores de bajo ingreso y la lucha en contra de estos ataques.

Este taller será una introducción a las diferentes herramientas de medios sociales para promover los centros de jornaleros. Vamos a
ofrecer consejos sobre las mejores prácticas, mensajes claves y consejos sobre cómo utilizar la tecnología para maximizar la publicidad y atraer a más empleadores a los centros. El taller será una experiencia práctica, asegurándo de que todos los/as participantes

8. Los comités populares como parte íntegra de la lucha por los derechos de los/as inmigrantes
Después de que pasó la ley HB 87 en Georgia en 2011, comunidades rurales y pequeñas empezaron a organizarse en comités. Estos
comités buscaban proveer información y protección a familias enfrentándose a la nueva ley anti-inmigrante. Años después los comités
continúan, sirviendo como una fuerza popular no sólo para defenderse, pero para transformar las condiciones en Georgia y otros
lugares.

9. Parando el Programa de Comunidades Seguras y las Peticiones de Detencion

Hoy, más de 160 localidades en todo el país han pasado políticas para acabar o limitar significadamente la cooperación local con
el programa fallido de Comunidades Seguras (S-Comm). S-Comm utiliza a la Policía local para extender una red de deportación que
permite la discriminación racial y las detenciones sin orden de un juez, y ha contribuído a un número record de deportaciones. Este
taller será un espacio para discutir el cómo trabajar juntos/as para acabar S-Comm con políticas a nivel de ciudad, condado, o incluso
a nivel estatal con políticas de TRUST Act (Acta de Confianza), para romper con las detenciones de ICE y restaurar la confianza para la
comunidad inmigrante.
10. Destrezas Laborales en la Comunidad Jornaler@
Un programa de desarrollo de destrezas laborales (workforce development) es de suma importancia para que los/as jornaleros/
as puedan conseguir mejores trabajos y para que las organizaciones fortalezcan sus sistemas de entrenamiento. Este taller
proveerá información acerca de diferentes modelos de desarrollo de destrezas en New York y California, y cómo se pueden crear
entrenamientos de destrezas en construcción, carpintería, y más.

11. OSHA 10: Introducción a OSHA y Peligros de la Salud*
Este entrenamiento busca proporcionar a los trabajadores y a las trabajadoras las herramientas necesarias para identificar los
peligros a que están expuestos/as en la industria de la construcción y buscar la manera de mejorar las condiciones en el lugar de
trabajo ejerciendo el derecho a un lugar de trabajo sano y seguro. Además de conocer los derechos bajo OSHA, los/as participantes
aprenderán cómo presentar una queja ante OSHA si fuera necesario. Este curso será facilitado por entrenadores/as autorizados/as y
todos/as los/as participantes que completen las 10 horas de entrenamiento recibirán un certificado y la tarjeta de OSHA.

Este taller interactivo ofrecerá una introducción a la visa U (también conocida como visa de “víctima de delito”) y la Ley de Poder
(Power Act). Vamos a discutir lo que la visa U es, qué tipos de violaciones comunes de los derechos laborales hacen que una persona
sea elegible para aplicar a ella, y la forma en que puede ser utilizada como una herramienta en campañas organizativas. También
hablaremos sobre lo que haría la Ley de Poder (Power Act) para expandir la elegibilidad a una Visa U para más trabajadores/as y
cómo la campaña de la Ley de Poder busca ampliar la elegibilidad para la visa U y promover otras estrategias para prevenir que los

Mientras los antecedentes penales se utilizan más y más para negarle la inclusión en la sociedad a gente de nuestra comunidad,
también ocurre en el sistema migratorio. Dentro de los sistemas penales y de seguridad racistas, es necesario desarrollar nuevas
estrategias y mensajes para defendernos contra las deportaciones de personas con antecedentes penales. Este taller discutirá las
experiencias y ejemplos de organización comunitaria para prevenir deportaciones de personas con tales antecedentes.

8. La Comisión de la Verdad: Lo que dicen los inmigrantes sobre los cambios que se necesitan hacer
en el sistema de inmigración
Este año un grupo de personas indocumentadas, o que han sido indocumentadas, se unieron para dar recomendaciones al Presidente
Obama. En su informe sin precedentes no sólo dieron recomendaciones concretas; también presentaron el argumento fundamental de
que deben ser las personas directamente afectadas las que estén en la mesa de negociación y que somos completamente capaces de
decir mucho más que nuestras historias y de mobilizar.

Este taller nos enseña elementos básicos para fomentar la igualdad de género en los centros y en nuestra lucha jornalera. Nos brinda
una guía básica para construir un espacio sano de convivencia y trabajo entre todas las personas sin importar género, religión, raza,
color de piel u orientación sexual. El contenido de este taller nos ofrece las herramientas para sentar las bases para erradicar el acoso
sexual de nuestros centros y espacios organizativos. El taller también presenta recomendaciones concretas para crear espacios donde

2. Conociendo Nuestra Comunidad y Erradicando la Homofobia en Nuestros Centros y Esquinas
Este taller nos ayuda a conocer sobre la comunidad LGBT. Aprenderemos sobre su lucha, y la opresión que han enfrentado. Nos
brindará lo oportunidad de identificar similitudes entre su lucha y la lucha jornalera para fortalecer nuestras alianzas; teniendo en
cuenta que muchos/as miembros de la comunidad LGBT son también miembros/as de la comunidad jornalera e inmigrante. Los/as
participantes aprenderán los términos correctos que deben ser utilizados para referirse y comunicarse con personas de la comunidad
LGBT. El taller nos ayudará a identificar los pasos a seguir para poner un alto a la homofobia en los centros y esquinas. A la misma vez
nos ofrece recomendaciones concretas para crear un ambiente sano donde todas las personas se sientan libres de participar en todas
las actividades; incluyendo la búsqueda de trabajo.

3. Mesa Redonda: Las Relaciones Afroamericanas - Nuevo Rompecabezas del Centro de
Trabajadores Negros
En esta sesión abordaremos la historia de los trabajadores Afro Americanos como jornaleros en los Estados Unidos. También nos
enfocaremos en la temática del racismo institucional y en cómo la marginalización estratégica de los trabajadores afro y latinos
ha hecho que estos dos grupos se enfrenten en la lucha por trabajo. Desarrollaremos estrategias con las cuales Afros y Latinos
puedan deconstruir la percepción negativa que tienen uno del otro y al mismo tiempo construir puentes positivos entre estas dos
comunidades.

Este taller enseña cómo promover la mano de obra jornalera para incrementar el número de trabajos. Se enfoca en mostrar nuestros
mensajes claves y más efectivos para atraer a los empleadores (los mensajes fueron creados con el apoyo de 5 especialistas en
mercadeo). A la vez, enseña las 6 estrategias más efectivas y factibles para promover un centro de Jornaleros. La identidad visual de
un centro y sus materiales de publicidad juegan un papel importante en capturar la atención del público al que queremos llegar. Este
taller nos brinda recomendaciones concretas sobre cómo mejorar la apariencia de nuestro centro y nuestros materiales de publicidad
para atraer la atención de la clientela.

Con grupos de incidencia basados en Washington, DC que dominan el debate migratorio, las personas indocumentadas han tenido
que tomar medidas dramáticas para hacerse escuchar en el debate. Los actos de desobediencia civil han sido una herramienta
poderosa para transformar el debate, y a los/as participantes. También se discutirán las acciones recientes para declarar “Yo Tengo
Mi Propia Voz”. Este taller incluirá líderes comunitarios que han participado en estas actividades, sus reflexiones y dará información
concreta sobre cómo se llevaron a cabo y cómo hacerlo.

creciente para despedir a un director local de ICE.

Erika Andiola
DRM Action Coalition
Erika nació en Durango, México, pero emigró a Mesa, Arizona, con solo 11 años de edad, junto a su familia. Erika es una de los/as
co-fundadores/as de DRM Capitol Group y del Arizona Dream Act Coalition (ADAC). Como Presidente y principal organizadora de la
coalición, ha ayudado a movilizar centenares de estudiantes en la lucha por la aprobación de la legislación DREAM Act. Andiola ha
usado su experiencia como organizadora para impedir la deportación de su propia madre.
Maria Elena Durazo
Secretaria Ejecutiva de la Tesorería del AFL-CIO
Durazo es la primera latina en ocupar un puesto tan relevante entre los sindicatos de la nación. Hija de inmigrantes mexicanos,
Durazo sabe bien lo que significa trabajar en labores mal pagados y sin ningún tipo de beneficio. Sus padres migraban de Oregón a
California con María Elena y sus nueve hermanos para trabajar en los campos agrícolas en busca del sustento diario.

Es abogada de la República, posee una maestría en Desarrollo Local de la Universidad Centroamericana “José Simeón Cañas”.
Durante la gestión del presidente Mauricio Funes se desempeñó en el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores como asesora del
Despacho Ministerial en Asuntos Legales y Administrativos, Directora General de Recursos Humanos, Directora Ejecutiva del
Proyecto Mesoamérica y Directora General del Servicio Exterior.
Sergio Rascon
Sindicato Internacional de Trabajadores de Norteamérica (LIUNA)
Sergio Rascón, Gerente de Negocios del Local 300 en Los Ángeles, fue elegido Vice-presidente de LIUNA. Rascón se convirtió en
agente del Local 300 en 1984. En 1989, fue elegido a la Junta Ejecutiva y ha servido como Asistente de Gerente de Negocios y
Presidente. El ha estado involucrado en más campañas políticas que en cualquier otro período en su historia, apoyando campañas
políticas progresistas y actuando en el interés de sus miembros.
Tom Saenz
Presidente y Cónsul General, Defensa Legal Mexico-Americana y Fondo Educativo (MALDEF)
Thomas Saenz es el Presidente y Abogado General de MALDEF, donde dirige las cinco oficinas de la organización, promoviendo los
derechos civiles de los/as Latinos/as que viven en los Estados Unidos. Saenz se re-incorporó a MALDEF en Agosto del 2009 después
de trabajar cuatro años como el abogado del equipo ejecutivo del entonces Alcalde de Los Angeles, Antonio Villarraigosa. Previo a
eso, Saenz trabajó 12 años con MALDEF ejerciendo leyes de derechos civiles. Se desempeñó como el abogado principal de MALDEF
impugnando exitosamente la propuesta anti-inmigrante 187 de California.
Secretary Hilda Solis
Ex Secretaria Laboral de Los Estados Unidos
La Secretaria Hilda L. Solís fue nombrada a la Secretaría de Labor el día 24 de Febrero del 2009, convirtiéndose en la primera Latina
en ser parte del Gabinete de los Estados Unidos. La Secretaria Hilda Solís, antes de su nombramiento como Secretaria Laboral,
representó al Distrito 32do del Congreso de California, y se mantuvo en esa posición desde el 2001 hasta el 2009. Durante su
tiempo en el Congreso, las prioridades de Solís incluyeron el ampliar el acceso al cuidado de salud económico, la protección al medio
ambiente, y el mejoramiento de la calidad de vida de las familias trabajadoras.
Jose Antonio Vargas
Ganador del Perio Periodista Pulitzer, cineasta, y fundador de Define al Americano
En Junio del 2011, la revista New York Times publicó un ensayo innovador que escribió Jorge Antonio en el cual hizo una crónica
de su vida como un inmigrante indocumentado, asombrando a los medios de prensa y círculos políticos y atrayendo cobertura
internacional. Desde entonces, ha testificado frente al Comité Judicial del Senado de los Estados Unidos en el tema de la reforma
migratoria, y ha escrito y dirigido “Documented”, un documental acerca de su experiencia como indocumentado.

Vice Presidente y Supervisor de la Región Este del Sindicato Internacional de Trabajadores de Norteamérica (LIUNA)
Miembro de LIUNA por más de 50 años, como Vicepresidente y Supervisor de la Región Este de LIUNA, el Sr. Pocino dirige y
supervisa diferentes actividades que afectan la vida de unos/as 40,000 trabajadores/as en el área de Nueva Jersey, Delaware,
la ciudad de Nueva York, y Long Island. Como Vicepresidente de LIUNA, el Sr. Pocino ejerce como administrador del Fondo de
Cooperación y Educación entre Trabajadores/as y Empleadores/as y el Fondo de Salud y Seguridad de Trabajadores/as.

¡Hay varias maneras de transportarse de LAX a UCLA y viceversa! En
seguida hay una lista de diferentes opciones para que decida cual es la
mas fácil para usted.
Autobús FlyAway –
FlyAway sale cada hora en punto desde las 6:00 am hasta las 10 pm.
Puede comprar su boleto en línea o en persona. El viaje cuesta $10 cada
ida. Solo se aceptan tarjetas de crédito o debito Visa, MasterCard, o
American Express (No se acepta efectivo). En trafico mínimo se hacen
como 30 a 40 minutos al aeropuerto (y viceversa).
Desde LAX:
Todos los autobuses FlyAway dejan a los pasajeros en el nivel Superior/
Salidas (Upper/Departures) de cada terminal. Los pasajeros abordan
los autobuses en la acera del Nivel Inferior/Llegadas (Lower/Arrivals) en
frente de cada terminal bajo el letrero verde que lee ““FlyAway, Buses
and Long Distance Vans”.

viaje cuesta aproximadamente 40 a $50 dependiendo del trafico.
The Big Blue Bus (el Gran Camión Azul)–
From LAX to UCLA: Para tomar el camión, necesita tomar el
autobús LAX Airport al Transit Center, de ahí puede abordar el
Gran Camión Azul Numero 3. Ese lo/a llevará hasta UCLA. ¡El
costo de el viaje es solamente $1.00!
Big Blue Bus (Gran Camión Azul):
La línea del Gran Camión Azul va principalmente a las áreas oeste de UCLA, y por lo tanto es la primera opción si usted quiere ir a
Santa Mónica, Venice, Pacific Palisades, el Getty Center, etc. También operan una línea rápida que va de Santa Mónica al centro de Los
Ángeles. El pasaje es de $1.00. Puede abordar el Gran Camión Azul en Westwood Boulevard en la entrada sur del campus.
MTA – mta.net:
Estos autobuses van al oeste de UCLA a Beverly Hills, Hollywood, centro de Los Ángeles, Burbank, etc. La tarifa regular es $1.50. Puede
abordar las líneas 2,3 y 302 al oeste del campus, atrás de las Suites Saxon. Otras líneas pueden ser abordadas en Wilshire y Westwood,
o al este del campus sobra Hilgard.

Hay tres operadores de autobuses en las proximidades de Westwood/UCLA, y cada uno tiene paradas cercanas al campus:

Alojamiento:
El hospedaje para aquellas personas que lo solicitaron se arregló en los dormitorios Sunset Village de UCLA. El registro para hospedaje
se encuentra dentro de Covel Commons Lobby. Check in es a las 4PM el dia de su llegada.
Los/as participantes estarán compartiendo una recamara de dos camas con baños privados o compartidos. Todos los cuartos tienen aire
acondicionado y no se permite fumar. Todos los cuartos disponen de internet, televisión por cable, servicio diario de limpieza, comodidas
como cobijas, toallas, jabon, shampoos y lociones. Además, todos los huéspedes del campus tienen acceso al Centro de Recreaciones de
Sunset Village. Se asignara a los/as participantes a compartir el cuarto con personas del mismo genero.
Check out es a las 11 AM el dia de tu ida. La llave del cuarto se debe regresar en el áreas de registro cuando desocupe. El día de su
salida, asegúrese de llevarse todas sus pertenencias de su habitación.
Comidas:
Los/as participantes de la Asamblea recibirán 3 comidas al día comenzando con la cena el día de llegada (Domingo 24 de Agosto) y
terminando con el almuerzo el día de salida (Jueves 28 de Agosto).*
*Por favor tengan en cuenta que la cena no será en el campus el Miércoles 27 de Agosto.

Se distribuirán boletos de comida durante el proceso de registro al contacto principal de su delegación.
Interpretación:
NDLON se encargará de la interpretación y traducción durante la asamblea. Nuestro objetivo es que el espacio sea tan bilingüe
como sea posible. Cualquier persona que no hable ambos idiomas, ingles y español, o no se sienta segura, puede solicitar una pieza
electrónica de traducción antes de reuniones y talleres.
