Principal’s Message
It has certainly been a busy first month of school at Birchwood. I must admit that the positive energy our students bring to
school each day is inspiring! Our hope is to continually recognize the
positive behaviors our kids demonstrate each day. As a school we have
identified several ways we will provide positive reinforcements for
students. You may have already seen the GROW leaves coming home
and the spectacular tree in the hallway (thank you Mrs. Morgan!). In
addition to GROW leaves, each classroom will be recognizing one
student per month as a Student of Distinction. We will notify families
if their child is chosen as a Student of Distinction and invite them to
attend our monthly celebration. At the celebration I will read a narrative for each student and we will take a picture to commemorate the
occasion. It will be a great way to acknowledge our outstanding kids
and their special accomplishments. By consistently recognizing positive
behavior our students will continue to strive to be their best at
Birchwood!
nuestro pasillo.(gracias a Ms. Morgan). En adición a las “GROW leaves”,
cada clase estará reconociendo un estudiante por mes como el Estudiante de Distinción.Nosotros le notificaremos a las fmailias si su hijo
ha sido escogido como Estudiante de Distinción y le in vitaremos a que
atienda a nuestra celebración mensual.

What are we learning with Ms. Caudill?
The current K/1st grade unit is promoting problem
solving skills through “Kelso’s Choices” curriculum.
Students are learning to categorize their problems as either
“small” or “big.” The goal is to equip students with skills
for managing their own “small” problems. Be on the lookout for Kelso’s wheel worksheets and encourage active
problem solving by asking “Is that a big or small problem?

Parent Advisory Committee
Parents Matter, a group of
community partners, parents and
Bellingham Public Schools staff,
focuses on the well-being of our
students and supporting parents in
the critical role they play in their
children’s success. Our group
plans to share a Weekly Parent-to
-Parent Tip via BPS’ Twitter
account (@BhamSD), Spanish
Facebook page (Padres Unidos
de las Escuelas de Bellingham),
a new parent education webpage,
and for schools/PTAs to consider
using in their newsletters. We’re
looking for some tips from parents
from each of our schools.
If you or a parent from your
school is interested in submitting
a tip, please email it to Teaching
and Learning Director Steve
Morse. Please include your first
and last name in the email in
case we have questions, your
school, and a tip of no more than
30 words. We will share the tip
and school it came from, but not
your name. We will choose at least
one tip per week to make a wellrounded collection to share
throughout this school year.
Thanks so much for considering
sharing your wisdom and expertise
with others!

Title I School Wide Program
As a Title I school, we follow
federal regulations that allow you to
learn more about your child’s teachers’
training and credentials. We are happy
to provide this information to you!
At any time, you can ask:
Whether the teacher met state
qualifications and certification requirements for the grade level and subject
he/she is teaching.
Whether the teacher received
an emergency or conditional certificate
through which state qualifications were
waived, and what undergraduate or
graduate degrees the teacher holds,
including graduate certificates, additional degrees, and major(s) or area(s)
of concentration.
You can also ask about paraprofessionals working with your child in reading,
writing, and/or math. If you don’t
know if your child gets extra help, just
ask!

Introducing iStride!
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Whatcom County is interested in being your partner in education. One of our three pillars for program focus
is Academic Success. In the past we have focused our efforts around
helping members of our Clubs to complete their homework during our
Power Hour program. This year we have changed our model and invested our
resources in an online learningplatform called Stride Academy.
I encourage you to check out the Stride Academy website at
www.strideacademy.com to read the research and testimonials that
helped us to choose this company as our partner. We would be happy to
share with you more information or demonstrate this program so you
can see firsthand our dedication to being a partner in the academic success our members.
Thank you for your support!

On October 28th, the Bellingham Public
Schools Foundation is partnering with the
Pickford Film Center to sponsor a screening of
Go Public – a documentary that celebrates
public education in America. Dr. Baker will be
part of a panel discussion following the film to
discuss his thoughts on the film with the audience. This event is a fundraiser for BPSF and
guests will be asked to consider a gift to the
foundation to support strong teaching and
learning across our district. Families can learn
more by visiting our website at
