Dear Friends,
Could you find a way to do it for me? They are a wonderful couple.
Both Creighton grads, a few years out, from wonderful families. I
married the bride’s parents 32 years ago and blessed the weddings of
her two brothers. I can fill you with greater detail should this work
for you. Let me know at your earliest convenience. If not could you
recommend someone who has your sensitivities and piety. Thanks, so

“If God is for us, who can be against us?” The
rhetorical question posed by Saint Paul presumes
a great fact. God IS for us! Sometimes it’s easy to
notice that fact. Other times it’s more difficult.
Today’s readings remind us of God’s mercy and love
- and of God’s great plan for the human race. Aware
of Abraham’s fidelity, God spared Isaac. Paul tells
us that God did not spare Jesus. He handed himself over for us all. He
delivered Jesus so that Jesus could deliver us from death. He gave us Jesus
so that Jesus could speak words of comfort, and challenge and mercy.
What we’re called to do is simple: LISTEN!
Immediately upon reading his note, I called him at his rectory in
Milwaukee (the northern suburbs?!). He told me more of his diagnosis
and that he believed he would not be alive on May first. The doctors’
prognosis speaks of weeks, not months. We spoke candidly on the phone
and he told me that he is not afraid to die. He’s now reaching out to
people whose lives have touched his and whose lives his has touched. I
reminded him of his fall 1983 comment to me outside of Saint Joan of Arc
Chapel and its effect on my discernment. I said, “You told me, ‘It’s a great
life!’” And, as strong as ever, The Dean said on the phone, “It is; isn’t it?”
I told him of his influence on my decision to respond to God’s call and of
my appreciation for his presence and example in my life.
On Monday, I received and email from “The Dean,” a priest who
was quite instrumental in my discernment when I was a college student
thinking about the possibility that God was actually calling me to be a
priest. I was a sophomore in college; he was the Dean of the College of
Arts and Sciences, the school in which I was enrolled. He always just
called it “The College,” as if there were no other. I always called him “The
Dean,” as if there were no other.
As I continue my Lenten journey, joyful that God in His great mercy
called me and sustains me, I will carry close to my heart the final journey
of The Dean. I will reflect on his example. The Dean has been able to be
the successful priest and educator – really the successful Christian - he has
been because he spends his life close to the Lord. He succeeds, because,
throughout his life, he has done just what the voice atop Mount Tabor
commanded the disciples to do: he has listened to the Beloved Son. We
can too!
“The Dean” celebrated Mass in Saint Joan of Arc Chapel, right in
the center of campus, every Tuesday night. I worshipped with him every
Tuesday. His preaching, his liturgical style, his intelligence, his well
roundedness, his joy in life, and his care for the students inspired me. He
was my hero. One Tuesday after Mass, I confided in him. I said, “I am
thinking and praying about being a priest, but I’m not sure…” He quickly
replied, “It’s a great life! And you’d make a great one.” I will never forget
his encouraging response and his continued support as I left Marquette
and went on to the seminary and was eventually ordained. We stayed in
contact. He went on to be Vice President of John Carroll, and to lead the
University of San Francisco and Creighton University as President. To
me, he was always – and is today -“The Dean!”
We are not deans, but our Lord speaks to each of us, calling us to
greatness and holiness of life. God IS for us. He has given us Jesus. This
Lent, let’s listen.

So at 4:27PM Monday, when I received the following note, I was
brought to my knees. He wrote,
Father Wayne, greetings from the northern suburbs. Trust you are well.
You may have heard that I have been diagnosed with inoperable cancer
and have a limited time left among us.Your powerful prayers would be
appreciated. I have a major request, however.
PS Next Friday evening we offer a great way to listen. For the second time
this year we will have a bilingual Taizé Prayer service. The Taizé prayer,
allowing for much silence, song, and scripture, will replace our usual
Lenten Friday Stations of the Cross. We will share light refreshments in
the hall after. Please join us.
I am scheduled to do a legacy wedding at the Cathedral
in Chicago on Friday May 1. I cannot meet that commitment.

PLEDGE
To pledge is to promise. And at the heart of the
sacrament of Marriage are promises made and
promises kept. Notice, however, that there is
something very special about the pledging or
promising that belongs to marriage. Usually, promises are about doing
something or keeping something. In marriage, it is different. A man and
a woman pledge and promise themselves. It couldn’t be more personal.
They give not something but themselves to each other. Now we know
how fragile our human pledges and promises can be. In the sacrament
of Marriage, when a couple pledges themselves to each other, they wrap
that promise in faith in God who will sustain the union and keep them
faithful. Human pledges and promises are full of risks and unknowns.
What makes them real and possible is a love that is more than human. It
is God’s sustaining love.
LENTEN TAIZÉ PRAYER SERVICE
The season of Lent is a time for us to
renew our relationship with God. We are
reminded to spend some time in prayer and
reflection. Please join us for an evening of
song and quiet prayer in the style of Taizé on
Friday, March 6 at 7:00 PM in the church.
LENTEN SERVICE PROJECT - TOILETRY DRIVE
As a Lenten Service Project, the community of Saint John Berchmans will
collect toiletries for distribution to shelters in Chicago. Small and sample
sized toiletries will be collected at all Masses on the weekend of March
14/15 and will be sorted for distribution at the Soup with Substance on
Friday, March 20th.

LENTEN RECONCILIATION SERVICE
Our bilingual reconciliation service will be held on Wednesday, March 18th
at 7pm. Lent is the perfect time to examine our consciences and receive
the Sacrament of Penance in preparation to celebrate the joy of the Easter
season.

Catholic Social Teaching: Option for the Poor and Vulnerable
The Saint John Berchmans Parish Life Commission will host a Saint Joseph’s
Table on Saturday, March 21st. More information about our celebration in
honor of Saint Joseph will be available in the coming weeks.
A basic moral test is how our most vulnerable members are faring. In a society marred
by deepening divisions between rich and poor, our tradition recalls the story of the Last
Judgment (Mt 25:31-46) and instructs us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable
first.
VOLUNTEER HELP FOR LENT
Option for the Poor and Vulnerable: Hunger in our Community
Looking for a way to volunteer during Lent? We need help with the many
receptions and events happening during the Lenten season. For each Soup
with Substance evening, we need volunteers to help set-up, help clean-up
and to prepare soup for 25 people. Additionally, we need help with the
preparation, serving and clean-up following the March 6th Taizé service.
Our final night of help is the RCIA reception and welcome following the
Easter Vigil Mass. We are looking for help with food donations (light snacks
and desserts), set-up, serving and clean-up. All and any help is appreciated.
Please contact Jennifer Cortez in the parish office to volunteer your time
or culinary talents.
According to the Greater Chicago Food Depository, 1 out of 6 Chicagoans
faces hunger every day. Nationally, there are 12 million children and 7 million
older adults who receive food assistance annually in the United States. The
numbers worldwide are even more staggering. Caritas estimates that nearly
1 billion people face hunger in a world with sufficient resources to ensure
all are fed. All people deserve the right to nutritious food. As we fast for
Lent, it is a good time to pray for our brothers and sisters who lack access to
sufficient food, and to act in ways that will help to eliminate hunger in our
community and in our world.
Solidarity Action: Undertake a Lenten fast in solidarity with the hungry
in our community. Commit to a zero food waste week, cook simple meals at
home, and donate any money saved to an organization that serves the hungry.
Join Pope Francis in his call to end global hunger by 2025. Learn more about

Llamados a Escuchar
Queridos amigos,
de Chicago el viernes, 1 de mayo. No puedo cumplir ese compromiso.
¿Podría usted encontrar una manera de hacerla por mí? Ellos son una
pareja maravillosa. Ambos graduados Creighton, hace unos cuantos años
atrás, de familias maravillosas. Yo casé a los padres de la novia hace 32
años y bendije las bodas de sus dos hermanos. Le puedo dar mayores detalles
si está usted interesado. Déjame saber en la primera oportunidad posible. Si
no ¿podría usted recomendar a alguien que tenga su sensibilidad y piedad.

“Si Dios está a nuestro favor, ¿quién estará en
contra nuestra?” La pregunta retórica planteada por
San Pablo supone un gran hecho. ¡Dios ESTÁ a nuestro
favor! A veces es fácil darnos cuenta de este hecho. Otras
veces es más difícil. Las lecturas de hoy nos recuerdan
de la misericordia y el amor de Dios - y del gran plan de
Dios para la raza humana. Consciente de la fidelidad de
Abraham, Dios reservó a Isaac. Pablo nos dice que Dios no reservó a Jesús.
Él lo entregó a todos nosotros. Él entregó a Jesús para que Jesús pudiera
librarnos de la muerte. Él nos dio a Jesús para que Jesús pudiera hablarnos
con palabras de consuelo, desafío y misericordia. Lo que estamos llamados a
hacer es simple: ¡ESCUCHAR!
Inmediatamente después de leer su nota, le llamé a su rectoría en
Milwaukee (¿los suburbios del norte?!). Él me conto más de su diagnóstico
y que creía que él no estaría vivo el primero de mayo. El pronóstico de los
médicos habla de semanas, no meses. Hablamos con franqueza en el teléfono y
me dijo que no tiene miedo morir. Ahora está conectándose con las personas
que han hecho una diferencia en su vida y con las personas en las cuales el ha
hecho una diferencia en sus vidas. Le recordé del comentario que me hizo
en el otoño de 1983 afuera de la Capilla Saint Joan of Arc y su efecto en mi
discernimiento. Le dije: “Usted me dijo, ‘¡Es una gran vida’” Y, más fuerte
que nunca, El Deán me contesto en el teléfono: “Lo es; ¿Verdad?” Yo le dije
de su influencia en mi decisión de responder a la llamada de Dios y de mi
agradecimiento por su presencia y ejemplo en mi vida.
El lunes recibí un correo electrónico de “El Deán”, un sacerdote
quien fue absolutamente instrumental en mi discernimiento cuando era un
estudiante universitario pensando en la posibilidad de que Dios realmente
me llamaba a ser sacerdote. Yo era un estudiante de segundo año en la
universidad; él era el Deán del Colegio de Artes y Ciencias, la escuela a la cual
yo asistía. Él siempre le llamo “El Colegio”, simplemente, como si no hubiera
otro. Siempre lo llamé “El Deán”, como si no hubiera otro.
A medida que continúo mi jornada cuaresmal, alegre de que Dios en
su gran misericordia me llamó y me sostiene, llevaré en mi corazón el viaje
final de El Deán. Reflexionaré sobre su ejemplo. El Deán ha podido ser un
exitoso sacerdote y educador - realmente un exitoso cristiano – él lo ha sido,
porque pasa su vida cerca del Señor. Él lo logra, porque, durante toda su
vida, ha hecho justamente lo que la voz encima del Monte Tabor mandó a los
discípulos a hacer: ha escuchado al Hijo Amado. ¡Nosotros también podemos!
“El Deán” celebraba la Santa Misa en la Capilla Saint Joan of Arc, justo en
el centro del campus, todos los martes por la noche. Adoraba con él todos los
martes. Me inspiro su predicación, estilo litúrgico, inteligencia, naturaleza,
la alegría de vivir, y su atención a los estudiantes. Él era mi héroe. Un martes
después de la misa, yo confié en él. Le dije: “Estoy pensando y orando acerca
de ser sacerdote, pero no estoy seguro...” Él respondió rápidamente: “Es una
gran vida! Y tú serías buenísimo. “Nunca olvidaré su alentadora respuesta y
su continuo apoyo cuando termine en Marquette y continué al seminario
y finalmente fui ordenado. Permanecíamos en contacto. Luego pasó a ser
Vicepresidente de John Carroll, y a dirigir la Universidad de San Francisco
y la Universidad de Creighton como Presidente. Para mí, siempre fue - y es
hoy en día - “El Deán”
No somos decanos, pero nuestro Señor nos habla a cada uno de nosotros,
llamándonos a la grandeza y santidad de la vida. Dios ESTÁ a nuestro favor. Él
nos ha dado a Jesús. Esta Cuaresma, escuchemos.

COMPROMETERSE
Anuncios Parroquiales
Comprometerse es prometer. Y en el corazón del
sacramento del Matrimonio radican las promesas
hechas y las promesas cumplidas. Debemos observar,
sin embargo, que hay algo muy especial acerca de
comprometerse o prometer en el matrimonio. Usualmente, las promesas
se tratan de hacer algo o de cumplir algo. En el matrimonio, es diferente.
Un hombre y una mujer se comprometen y se “prometen” a sí mismos. No
podría ser más personal. No se entregan algo, sino a sí mismos, el uno al
otro. Ahora, sabemos cuán frágiles pueden llegar a ser nuestras promesas y
compromisos humanos. En el sacramento del Matrimonio, cuando en una
pareja se comprometen el uno con el otro, envuelven esa promesa con la fe
en Dios, quien sostendrá la unión y mantendrá la fidelidad. Las promesas y
los compromisos humanos están llenos de riesgos e imprevistos. Lo que los
hace reales y posibles es un amor que es más fuerte que el humano; es el amor
sustentado por Dios.
SERVICIO DE ORACIÓN DE
CUARESMA TAIZÉ
El tiempo de Cuaresma es un tiempo para
renovar nuestra relación con Dios. Se nos
recuerda pasar algún tiempo en oración y
reflexión. Por favor, únase a nosotros para
una noche de sereno canto y oración en el
estilo de Taizé el viernes 6 de marzo a las
7:00 pm en la iglesia.
PROYECTO DE SERVICIO DE CUARESMA
Como un proyecto de servicio de Cuaresma, la comunidad de San Juan
Berchmans recogerá artículos sanitarios para su distribución a los centros
de refugios en Chicago. Las muestras y pequeños artículos sanitarios serán
recogidos en todas las misas del fin de semana del 14/15 de marzo y se
clasificaran para su distribución el viernes, 20 de marzo durante la sopa
con sustancia.

SERVICIO DE RECONCILIACIÓN DE CUARESMA
Nuestro servicio bilingüe de reconciliación se llevará a cabo el miércoles, 18
de marzo a las 7 pm. La Cuaresma es el momento perfecto para un examen
de conciencia y recibir el Sacramento de Penitencia como nos preparamos
para celebrar alegremente la temporada de Pascua.

MESA DE SAN JOSÉ
La Comisión de Vida Parroquial de San Juan Berchmans patrocinará una
Mesa de San José el sábado, 21 de marzo. El Altar de San Joseph o la Mesa
de San José es una tradición católica que comienza en Sicilia, y vive en la
actualidad. Más información sobre nuestra celebración en honor de San José
estará disponible en las próximas semanas.
La opción por los pobres y vulnerables
Una prueba moral básica es cómo les va a nuestros miembros más vulnerables. En una sociedad
marcada por divisiones cada vez más agudas entre ricos y pobres, nuestra tradición recuerda
la historia del Juicio Final (Mt 25: 31-46) y nos enseña a preocuparnos primero por las
necesidades de los pobres e indefensos.
AYUDA DE VOLUNTARIOS PARA LA CUARESMA
Opción por los pobres e indefensos: El hambre en nuestra Comunidad
¿Esta usted buscando una manera de ser voluntario durante la Cuaresma?
Necesitamos ayuda con las muchas recepciones y eventos que suceden
durante la temporada de Cuaresma. Para cada noche de Sopa con Substancias,
necesitamos voluntarios para ayudar a preparar, limpiar y cocinar la sopa
para 25 personas. Además, necesitamos ayuda con la preparación, servicio y
limpieza después del servicio Taizé, el 6 de marzo. Nuestra última noche para
ayudar es la recepción y bienvenida de RICA después de la Misa de la Vigilia
de Pascua. Necesitamos ayuda con donaciones de alimentos (aperitivos y
postres), con la preparación, servicio, y la limpieza. Se agradece toda y
cualquier ayuda. Por favor, póngase en contacto con Jennifer Cortez en la

al Papa Francisco en su llamado a terminar con el hambre mundial en el año 2025.

Once again, we want to remind you to respect the No Parking/
Tow Zones as designated by the City of Chicago. We realize that
parking is often a challenge, but the small stretch of road between
the inner and outer boulevards are not legal parking spots. A few
years ago, signs were added to certain blocks of Logan Boulevard
allowing parking on Saturdays and Sundays from 7am to 9pm.
Please park directly on the boulevard to avoid tickets. Although
many have parked in these spots for years, we have been informed
that the police will be enforcing the new parking zones and you
could be ticketed or towed during Mass. If you have any questions,
or would like the areas clarified, please contact the rectory office.

Estacionamiento Prohibido / Remolque señaladas por la ciudad
de Chicago. Nos damos cuenta de que el estacionamiento es a
menudo un desafío, pero el pequeño tramo de carretera entre los
bulevares interior y exterior no es espacio de estacionamiento
legal. Hace unos años, se agregaron signos a ciertos bloques del
bulevar de Logan permitiendo estacionamiento los sábados y
domingos de 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Por favor estaciónese directamente

The Scrutinies
Next Sunday at the 8:15am Mass we are celebrating the “First
Scrutiny” for those in our catechumenal process who are preparing
for their initiation at the Easter Vigil. The following Sunday, March
15th at the 11:30am Mass, we will celebrate the “Second Scrutiny”
and on March 22nd at the 6:30pm Mass we will celebrate the “Third
Scrutiny.”
