Jubilee Year of Mercy - Merciful Like the Father
Page 2
PRAYER FOR PRIESTS
FR. GÉRARD’S CORNER
How wonderfully providential. Today the
Church celebrates a jubilee for those
suffering illness or disabilities and for the
wonderful people dedicated to serving
them. Luke, Paul’s “beloved physician,”
presents Jesus’ “healing” encounter with
a woman who, “spiritually ill,” was thus “disabled” from
participating in worship and hospitality.
How deeply inspiring. Jesus’ extraordinary mercy welcomes
her extraordinary intimacy as an extraordinary and sincere
manifestation of love. By bathing Jesus’ feet with tears,
drying them with unveiled hair, kissing and anointing
them, this “unclean” woman risked making Jesus
“unclean,” too. But “Your sins are forgiven . . . Your faith
has saved you; go in peace” (Luke 7:48, 50). Like sinful
David in the first reading, she is instantly forgiven. Gift
received, not feat achieved, Paul tells the Galatians.
When Jesus meets this sinful woman, as Saint Augustine
said of Jesus meeting the woman caught in adultery,
“Misery and Mercy meet face to face!”
How appropriately challenging. The anonymous intruder,
known only as “a sinful woman,” admits being a sinner
and thus receives merciful grace. But the dinner’s host,
known by name and religious title, Simon the Pharisee,
judges her harshly and himself not at all, and thus forfeits
God’s mercy. Moreover, though Simon hosts dinner in his
own home, an uninvited outsider provides Jesus true
hospitality. So Jesus, the invited guest, hosts a feast of
mercy for someone whose sinfulness made her unwelcome. Both the gospel of Jesus and the Jubilee of Mercy
declare that only by showing complete and unconditional
mercy to others can we ever hope to obtain any mercy
ourselves.

RCIA
A Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults
A Life of Service
Priests are selfless sources of inspiration, wisdom,
and comfort who dedicate their lives to guiding us
through daily sacraments as well as life’s most
extraordinary events. From the joyous celebrations
of baptism and marriage through anointing the sick
and mourning our losses, they stand beside us.
With minimal compensation and little or no pension,
they often retire with nothing to fall back on.
Our Turn to Give Back
The Priest Retirement Fund offers a way for us to
give back to our Catholic priests who have served
us so faithfully. Your contribution will help
archdiocesan priests live modestly and peacefully
in retirement. Help us offer thanks for their years
of devotion to God and our communities.
Are you feeling called to deeper faith?
Are you interested in becoming Catholic?
Do you have questions about the Catholic
faith?
Have you been baptized but not yet received
Confirmation and Holy Communion?
The journey begins with Inquiry, which meets every
Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Grill Hall Rm C .
The journey incorporates all aspects of parish life: prayer,
worship, Scripture study, community, and acts of charity.
The RCIA process is open to adults and youth (grade 6
and up) in separate tracks.
RCIA adults meet on Tuesday evenings throughout the
year from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in Grill Hall.
RCIA youth continue to meet on Tuesdays evenings,
from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
If you are interested, or know someone who might like to
join us, please call Molly in the RCIA office:
818-341-3680 ext. 121.
Your Gift
Your gift to the Priest Retirement Fund helps
provide a monthly stipend to retired priests of the
Archdiocese of Los Angeles. For most priests, this
assistance is their only means of support. This fund
helps many senior priests stay well and active in our
communities.
Every Gift Helps
While the need is great, no contribution is too small.
If each of our parish families donated at least $10.00
to this important cause, the Archdiocese of Los
Angeles could support the Priest Retirement Fund
for an entire year. What better way to offer thanks
and gratitude to those who have given so much to
us and continue to serve our communities long after
their administrative duties are fulfilled.

DID YOU KNOW?
You can help children
know they are
understood . . .
As parents, educators,
and volunteers, we want children to
know that we are not only authority
figures in their lives, but also people
they can trust. To foster authentic
trust with children, it is important that
they know that you understand them.
One of the simplest ways to do this
is by repeating back what children
are telling you. When you do this,
you are affirming to the child that he
or she is heard and understood.

(Is 49,15).
