A Community That Builds Bridges The mission of St. John’s Episcopal Church
is to be a community of God’s people who
heal brokenness, build bridges, and
exemplify borderless kindness.
I used to do environmental permitting for
construction projects. I noticed an odd
thing. If people were building fences, no
one ever objected. But new bridges, oh my
goodness! New bridges brought on a big
fight. People feared who the bridge would
bring closer to them. People feared changes
in their neighborhood. People fought
against new bridges.
That always bothered me. We should fight
more against fences than bridges. God calls
us to always include people, especially new
people. Abraham began his journey of faith
as an alien to the land God called him to
(Genesis 23:4). God commands us to
welcome the stranger and alien “You shall
not wrong or oppress a resident alien, for
you were aliens in the land of
Egypt.” (Exodus 22:21). And Jesus brought
his ministry to those excluded by Israel
(Mark 7:24-30; John 4:4-30).

Jesus crossed boundaries. Jesus built bridges
between people. Our mission at St. John’s is to
do the same. In the face of diversity, the world
calls out for more barriers. At St. John’s we work
to remove barriers and create unity. In fear, the
world wants to keep anyone, even people who
live within sight of them in town, away from
their community. Our mission is to fearlessly
invite more and more people into our
community.
Fences are easy to build. Bridges are hard to
build. But we have discerned that we need more
bridges than fences in the world. At St. John’s we
do the hard work, God’s work, of building
bridges.
Jesús cruzó a las fronteras. Jesús construyó los puentes
entre las personas. Nuestra misión en San Juan es a
hacer lo mismo. Frente a la diversidad, el mundo grita
por más barreras. En San Juan trabajamos para eliminar
las barreras y crear unidad. En el miedo, el mundo

which God has given us to do. I know, I know!
Perhaps you feel that you don’t have time to add
anything to your schedule. Trust “him who by

ask or imagine.” Ephesians 3.20

Perhaps you feel that the work you feel called to
do is already being done and there is no place for
you. There is always room for you to add your
unique gifts “for it is God who is at work in you,
enabling you both to will and to work for his
good pleasure.” Philippians 2.13
Perhaps you do not feel worthy to participate in
the ministry of the church. By Christ’s death and
resurrection you are made worthy. God gives the
talent, God issues the call, God makes you
worthy and “will fulfil by his power every good
resolve and work of faith.” 2 Thessalonians 1.11
When we serve others, we also benefit – there is a
good feeling that comes from helping, whether
the act be large or small. There was recently a
movement initiated on Facebook called “Let’s
Make a Difference” – those who participated
(58,000 and counting) were asked to perform a
random act of kindness on July 16. Many of those
who commented said they try to incorporate this
into their daily lives, but would make a special
effort on that Saturday. For me (and I do try to be
kind every day), it made me more aware of
service to others. And also more aware of the acts
of kindness and service done FOR me.
The work is plentiful and the laborers few. If
everyone in our congregation took on a ministry,
St. John’s would become an unstoppable force for
good in our community. Please prayerfully
consider what you can do to serve, inside or
outside the walls of St. John’s, and participate in
the Connect To Your Joy event on September 25.
This will give everyone an opportunity to discern
your gifts, ask questions, find that ministry which
speaks to your soul, and connect to joy!

For as in one body we have many members, and
all the members do not have the same function, so
we, though many, are one body in Christ and
individually members one of another. Having
gifts that differ according to the grace given to us,
let us use them. Romans 12:4-6
What is Connection?
Connection is giving meaning to membership and
discovering the gifts of the people. Connection helps the newcomer answer these
questions: • Where do I fit in? • Can I make friends in this church? • Is there room for me relationally? • Does this church need me? • Can I find a place to belong and serve? • Am I safe here?
Early in September you will be given the
opportunity to participate in a fun poll which will
help you determine which of several gifts you are
blessed with. On September 25, representatives
will be at all services to introduce the many
ministries of St. John’s.
Using the results of the poll, you will be invited to
visit with the various ministries and investigate
where your gifts can be most productively and
effectively used in the building up of St. John’s
and the service of God’s People. This will be an
informative and fun day when you can find what
you love to do and connect to your joy!

Who is a Minister?
¿Quien es el Ministerio?
When I was a girl, growing up in the 1950’s,
“ministers” were men who led the church
services every Sunday. They wore a uniform of
black suits and shirts with a round white collar.
On Sundays, they wore black dresses with a
white overdress, much like a pinafore, and a
colorful band. These bands usually had a gold
cross or some other symbol embroidered at the
ends that hung down from their necks. They were
professionals who belonged to the church. But
things have changed since I was a young girl.
Cuando era niña, creciendo en los mil novecientos

In the English language, “ministry” referred to
the ordained orders until the late twentieth
century. According to the Episcopal Dictionary1,
the term minister was reclaimed to denote “the
life of service of all baptized persons.” This
understanding was formalized in the Outline of
Faith in the 1979 edition of the Book of Common
Prayer: “the ministry of [all baptized Christians]
is to represent Christ . . . wherever they may
be; and, according to the gifts given them, to carry
on Christ's work of reconciliation in the world. . .”

This means we are all ministers. As baptized
Christians, we all have a life of service. Where do
we serve? Does our ministry consist of the
activities that we do in the church or as
representatives of the church? How many
ministries can one person have? Is it possible to
be a minister without the Church?

was working at a computer store in the 1980’s and
teaching people how to use their computers. I am

A Call to Share in an “Epiphany”

It is mid-August and while listening to NPR, I
heard a report that there is a rise in anti-Muslim
hate crimes and a marked increase in anti-Muslim
posts on social media. In this report, Dr. Debbie
Almontaser, President of the Board of Directors of
the Muslim Community Network in New York
City, said that this increase is due to anti-Muslim
rhetoric coming “…from a place of fear.”
Es mediados de agosto y mientras escuché NPR, oí un
informe que hay una subida de delitos de odio
antimusulmanes y un notable aumento en puestos

working with Refugee Services of Texas, I have
gone through a major change…an epiphany.
Working with our refugee families who are
Muslim, sitting and talking to them for hours,
chatting on Facebook, break bread with them,
sharing faith stories and family stories, I have
developed new, deep friendships with warmhearted faithful people.
We will soon be sponsoring a new family’s arrival
in Austin. I welcome you to come take part in this
life-changing effort. Come and meet and befriend
the people we have come to call “friend.”

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines
Hindsight as the knowledge and understanding that
you have about an event only after it has happened.
Retrospectiva
In July, I reached the ripe 'young' age of 50. As I
pondered and whole heartedly thought about
turning a half a century; being on earth for five
decades; being able to record my age as (in a deep
Darth Vader voice) “Two Score and Ten Years...”
Wow, the mere thought of it boggled my mind.
But what truly boggled my mind is when I
attempted to review my last 50 years, in
hindsight.
¡En julio, me convertí en un “joven” de 50 años de
edad! Mientras pensaba sobre cómo entregar una
mitad de un siglo; ser en la tierra durante cinco
décadas; ser capaz de grabar mi edad como (en una
profunda voz de Darth Vader) “Dos veintenas y Diez

For instance, think of a particular event that
occurred in your life just one year ago. How did
you react to this event? Given the knowledge that
you possess today, would you have reacted
differently?
I've experienced many things in my life...some
horrific, however, many that were extraordinarily
wonderful. To say that I have no regrets about
some of the choices that I made in the past would
not be completely true. I do have some regrets,
however, I believe that things happen for a
reason. I would not be the person I am today
without the good, the bad, and the ugly of my
past. In hindsight, I truly believe that my life was
and still remains, by design. The LORD created
me, along with my life experiences, not to be
regretted but to be looked upon as life lessons. All
are to be seen with a positive twist and all to be
rejoiced upon.
I have often shared how detrimental cancer has
been to me, physically, emotionally and
spiritually. It took me years of fighting back and
relying on the LORD for strength to cross this
hurdle. I never thought how my tenacity to not

hindsight is that I am a product of "this too shall
pass." I have lived, made mistakes and will
continue to fumble from time to time. Good, bad
or indifferent, life is to be experienced; the LORD
created it this way.

Thanks to all of you who signed up to assist in
maintaining our property:
• Karoline Gebert, who was the first to sign up
for weeding the 2 rock beds on the back of the
administration building;
• John and Laurie Williams for taking the
northwest corner of the church parking lot;
• Mike and Susan for agreeing to maintain the
Memorial Garden;
• Nancy Mangham for work on the outdoor
baptismal font;
• Steve Kriechbaum for taking shrubs in front
right of the parish hall;
• Laura and Travis Jennings for taking on the
bricks by the outdoor chapel; and
• Paul Villarreal and Scott Hiers for agreeing to
maintain the shrubs along the northeast area of
the church parking lot (a very large project, so if
someone else would like to help, let me know).

The Concert Across America/
Concierto a Través América

St. John’s Choir will join with church choirs
across the diocese and nation to be a part of the
“Concert Across America to End Gun Violence”
on September 25, The Concert Across America is
a series of live music events of all sizes from
coast to coast to remember victims of America’s
gun violence epidemic. Our choir will present a
special anthem focusing on peace at the 10:30
service, and the hymns that day will emphasize
peace as well.
El Coro de San Juan se unirá con coros de la iglesia a
través de la diócesis y nación para ser una parte del
“Concierto a Través de América para Terminar la
Violencia con armas” el 25 de septiembre. El Concierto
a Través de América es una serie de eventos de la
música en vivo de todos los tamaños de costa a costa
para recordar víctimas de la epidemia de violencia de
armas en los Estados Unidos. Nuestro coro presentará

community, in which we will have all sorts of

What is Jamaica and What does it do?
Jamaica, is a small festival put on by a church to
raise funds for the year while promoting
fellowship among its members and the wider
community. It means that while we create a fun
family-friendly space, we want as many people
as possible to enjoy a day of joy with our
community. This is especially important to St.
John’s as we want to encourage everyone to talk
to and meet other wonderful souls across all
services. Through this we also believe to take a
step closer towards being a welcoming, diverse
church for all who visit for the first time, or the
7894857th time! We want to do this, as it provides
a space for a relaxing time in which fellowship
may grow deeper within our multicultural
community. And if you were wondering: YES,
All proceeds go towards the needs of our church.

Jamaica, es un pequeño festival organizado por una
iglesia para recaudar fondos para el año, mientras se

Volunteer sign-ups are ready. Please see Isabel

help. There are many spots open.
What if I can’t make it but want to contribute?
Thank you in advance for wanting to be part of
this, even when you can’t attend! We need
donations for raffle prizes (these can include gift
cards to restaurants, baskets, bicycles, etc.), food
and beverages (you can donate chips for nachos
for example), decorations, tents, etc. In any way
you want to help you are welcome to, we want to
make this your event, and everyone’s ideas are
valued.

St. John’s Choir Welcomes New Members
Our choir welcomes new members! If you love
music, like to sing, and enjoy a fun group, see
Philip Riley for details. Rehearsals have begun
for the fall, each Thursday night at 7:30. No
audition is required. The choir supports the
music at the 10:30 service each Sunday and at
other times as needed.

Thanks to all of you who participated in the backto-school supply drive that was held for McBee
Elementary. We will be able to close the gap, even
if just a little, in providing some of the items that
students’ own families cannot. It is a wonderful
experience to see the look on the children’s faces
when you know that they would otherwise not
have been able to have all of the supplies that
they needed. It is also wonderful to hear from the
teachers that they did not have to buy the
supplies out of their own salaries!
Gracias a todos los que participaron en la distribución
de suministros escolares para McBee Elementary.
Seremos capaces de cerrar la diferencia, aun si sólo un
poco, proporcionando algunos artículos que las

53.2% increase from last month) and higher
disbursements (a 5.9% increase). The year-todate average monthly receipts are $17,162.96;
disbursements, $15,191.49. June and April are
the only months with a deficit so far this year.
