A Letter from Our Pastor
Epiphany with Bishop Fulton Sheen
We begin our new calendar
year with the glorious feast of
the Epiphany. Epiphany means
"revealing" or "unveiling". It
commemorates the visit of the wise men to
Bethlehem to pay homage to the newborn
king. These men represent the "ends of the world"
and show how Jesus is revealed to the nations as
the Savior of mankind. It is also the day when much
of the world exchanges gifts (not on Christmas). This
is in keeping with the gifts of gold, frankincense and
myrrh which the Magi bestowed on the Christ child.
I have been reading some of the works of the late
Bishop Fulton Sheen. This inspiring speaker and
writer continues to influence Christians (and nonChristians) throughout the world. In 2012 his cause
for sainthood was introduced. Some of his thoughts
give us a great deal to meditate upon. I would like to
share some of them with you to begin our new year.

but it must also know why it is acting, and that
requires thought, contemplation, and silence."

sadness in our hearts, it is because there is not
enough love. But to be loved, we must be lovable; to

know Goodness, and to know Goodness is to love
God, and neighbor, and everybody in the world."
3. "Joy is not the same as levity. Levity is an act; joy,
a habit. Mirth is like a meteor, cheerfulness like a
star; mirth is like crackling thorns, joy like a fire. Joy,
being more permanent, makes difficult actions
easier. Soldiers after a long day' s march would
hardly walk as nimbly as they do, if they did not
march to music. A cheerful heart always finds a yoke
easy and a burden light."

Catholic Leadership Institute!

through Ash Wednesday, Feb 10. The survey asks you to reflect on your own spiritual growth and provide
feedback on what the parish is doing to help you grow. All responses will be confidential and the parish will
only receive information about the community as a whole.
We are trying to get the highest response rate possible. This information will be invaluable to me and our
various ministries as we plan ahead and try to be the best disciples we can be. We will receive the results
this summer, at which time we will share what we have learned with the entire parish.

March to Celebrate Life, Saturday, Jan 15-16:
A Youth Rally on Friday, Jan 15, 6 to 9pm at Bishop
Machebeuf High School starts things off, then at 11:30 am
on Saturday, three Masses will be celebrated: one at the
Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, one at
Holy Ghost and one at St Elizabeth of Hungary for youth and
young adults. After the Masses, everyone will gather at
the Capitol for a 1pm Rally and a 2pm March through
downtown Denver. Find complete information and register

Mercy Chose Me: An archdiocesan-wide conference
on how to fully live the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy
will be held Saturday, Jan 23, at Immaculate Heart of
Mary Parish in Northglenn. The event will feature a talk by
popular author and speaker Ted Sri on the meaning of the
Jubilee Year, a panel and video on Julia Greeley, Denver’s
“Angel of Mercy”, and a closing talk by Father John Ignatius
on living a spirituality of mercy. Opportunities for engaging
in works of mercy with various local apostolates will also be

Prayer for the Year of Mercy
You have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly
Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees
Him. Show us your face and we will be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from
being enslaved by money; the adulteress and
Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created
things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured
Paradise to the repentant thief.
Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the
words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you
knew the gift of God!”
You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the
God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness
and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the
world, its Lord risen and glorified.
You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in
weakness in order that they may feel compassion for
those in ignorance and error: let everyone who
approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven
by God.
Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its
anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of
grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed
enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim
liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight
to the blind.
We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of
Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the
Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

EPIFANÍA CON EL OBISPO FULTON SHEEN

Comenzamos nuestro año nuevo con la fiesta gloriosa de la Epifanía. Epifanía significa
"Revelación" o "Develación". Se conmemora la visita de los Reyes Magos a Belén para rendir homenaje
al rey recién nacido. Estos hombres representan el "fin del mundo" y muestran cómo Jesús se revela a las
naciones como el Salvador de la humanidad. También es el día en que gran parte de los intercambios de
regalos (no en Navidad). Está en consonancia con los dones de oro, incienso y mirra que los Magos
obsequiaron al niño Jesús.
He estado leyendo algunas de las obras finales del Obispo Fulton Sheen. Este altavoz inspirador y
escritor continúa influyendo a cristianos (y a los no cristianos) en todo el mundo. En 2012, se introdujo su
causa de canonización. Algunos de sus pensamientos nos dan mucho que meditar. Me gustaría compartir
algunos de ellos con usted para comenzar nuestro año nuevo.
1. "Vivimos en la era más locuaz en la historia del mundo. Se necesitaría diez o quince millones de
hombres en edades anteriores a comunicar a los demás la misma información que una persona hoy
ofrece en una sola emisión. El amor de ruido y emoción en la civilización moderna se debe en parte
al hecho de que las personas son infelices en el interior. El ruido que exterioriza, les distrae, y hace
que la olvide sus preocupaciones por el momento. Hay una conexión inequívoca entre una vida vacía
y un ritmo frenético. Para avanzar el mundo debe tener la acción, pero también debe saber por qué
está actuando, y que requiere pensamiento, la contemplación y el silencio. "
2. "La alegría es la alegría del amor-amor consciente de su propia felicidad interior. El placer viene de
fuera, pero la alegría viene de dentro, y es, por tanto, al alcance de todos en el mundo. Porque si hay
tristeza en nuestro corazón, es porque no hay suficiente amor. Paro ser amado, debemos ser
amables;. para ser dignos de ser amado, debemos ser buenos, ser bueno, hay que conocer la bondad,
ya sabemos Bondad es amar a Dios y al prójimo , y todo el mundo en el mundo ".
3. "La alegría no es la misma que la levedad liviandad, es un acto;.. La alegría, la alegría es un hábito
como un meteoro, la alegría como una estrella; la alegría es como espinas crepitantes, la alegría como
un fuego Alegría, siendo más permanente, hace las acciones difíciles más fácil. Los soldados después
de un dia largo de marchar, difícilmente caminan tan ágilmente como lo hacen. El corazón alegre
siempre encuentra un yugo fácil y una carga ligera ".

Evangelio: Mateo 2:1-12
Nacido Jesús en Belén de Judea, en tiempo del rey Herodes, unos magos que venían del Oriente se
presentaron en Jerusalén, y diciendo: «¿Dónde está el Rey de los judíos que ha nacido? Pues vimos su estrella en
el Oriente y hemos venido a adorarle.» En oyéndolo, el rey Herodes se sobresaltó y con él toda Jerusalén.
Convocó a todos los sumos sacerdotes y escribas del pueblo, y por ellos se estuvo informando del lugar donde
había de nacer el Cristo. Ellos le dijeron: «En Belén de Judea, porque así está escrito por medio del profeta:
Y tú, Belén, tierra de Judá, no eres, no, la menor entre los principales clanes de Judá; porque de ti saldrá un
caudillo que apacentará a mi pueblo Israel.» Entonces Herodes llamó aparte a los magos y por sus datos precisó el
tiempo de la aparición de la estrella. Después, enviándolos a Belén, les dijo: «Id e indagad cuidadosamente sobre
ese niño; y cuando le encontréis, comunicádmelo, para ir también yo a adorarle.»
Ellos, después de oír al rey, se pusieron en camino, y he aquí que la estrella que habían visto en el Oriente iba
delante de ellos, hasta que llegó y se detuvo encima del lugar donde estaba el niño. Al ver la estrella se llenaron de
inmensa alegría. Entraron en la casa; vieron al niño con María su madre y, postrándose, le adoraron; abrieron luego
sus cofres y le ofrecieron dones de oro, incienso y mirra. Y, avisados en sueños que no volvieran donde Herodes,
se retiraron a su país por otro camino.

Fiesta del Bautismo del Señor
Santo de la Semana: Los Reyes Magos
Mientras en Oriente la Epifanía es la fiesta de la Encarnación, en
Occidente se celebra con esta fiesta la revelación de Jesús al
mundo pagano, la verdadera Epifanía. La celebración gira en torno
a la adoración a la que fue sujeto el Niño Jesús por parte de los
tres Reyes Magos (Mt 2 1-12) como símbolo del reconocimiento
del mundo pagano de que Cristo es el salvador de toda la
humanidad.
De acuerdo a la tradición de la Iglesia del siglo I, se relaciona a
estos magos como hombres poderosos y sabios, posiblemente
reyes de naciones al oriente del Mediterráneo, hombres que por su
cultura y espiritualidad cultivaban su conocimiento de hombre y de la naturaleza esforzándose especialmente por
mantener un contacto con Dios. Del pasaje bíblico sabemos que son magos, que vinieron de Oriente y que como regalo
trajeron incienso, oro y mirra; de la tradición de los primeros siglos se nos dice que fueron tres reyes sabios: Melchor,
Gaspar y Baltazar. Hasta el año de 474 AD sus restos estuvieron en
Constantinopla, la capital cristiana más
importante en Oriente; luego fueron trasladados a la catedral de Milán (Italia) y en 1164 fueron trasladados a la ciudad
de Colonia (Alemania), donde permanecen hasta nuestros días. El hacer regalos a los niños el día 6 de enero
corresponde a la conmemoración de la generosidad que estos magos tuvieron al adorar al Niño Jesús y hacerle regalos
tomando en cuenta que "lo que hiciereis con uno de estos pequeños, a mi me lo hacéis" (Mt. 25, 40); a los niños
haciéndoles vivir hermosa y delicadamente la fantasía del acontecimiento y a los mayores como muestra de amor y fe a
Cristo recién nacido.
