Chamber hosts vendor workshop
for EXPO registrants
The Fuquay-Varina Chamber of Commerce has scheduled a Business Expo
Planning Workshop for all registered
vendors in the Core Connection Business
Expo on Aug. 25 at the Fuquay-Varina
Community Center.
This workshop is also open to anyone
who is planning to attend the Expo as a
booth vendor. The workshop will be held
from 8-9 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 4 at the
Century 21 Becky Medlin Realty office,
which is located at 407 N. Judd Parkway,
NE.
This workshop will cover the basics of a
good EXPO experience, including how to
set up your booth, how to draw potential
clients to your booth, how to use signage
(banners/posters) to your best advantage,
how to approach Expo attendees to promote your business, and how to advertise
the event to your existing client list so
that the Expo can get onto everyone’s
calendar.
It is in every vendor’s best interest to
invite their own clients to visit them at
the Expo so that all the vendors can benefit from seeing new faces and get a chance
to promote what they do.
To sign up for this workshop, please
call the Chamber office at 552-4947.

Stars Theater and Arts Center, 123 East Vance St., is open
for business, entertainment and
education. There’s a lot to look
forward to at this new FuquayVarina center.
After transforming the old
Belk building into a castle, director Cindy Verian has big plans
for the center. She plans on
working with other community
programs and businesses in joint
ventures. While Verian and her
husband Mike own the building,
they actually rent the space out
to Stars Theater and Arts, a nonprofit organization.
Because it is non-profit, there
is always a need for something.
Verian has great ideas for fundraising and said the community
has already been generous in
contributing. The organization
has been given a grand piano.
Before they can strike a chord,
however, they need to raise the
funds to move the piano to its
new home.
The support from the community has been overwhelming.
Local residents volunteered to
build shelves to store costumes,
making operations run more
smoothly for performances.
Verian said that people are
just thrilled that the building
isn’t empty and is going to continue to be a valuable part of the
community. As for renovating
the building, a lot of help was
given by community and family
members.
“Everything you see has a
story,” said Verian. Even the

lobby’s chairs were donated by a
local law firm.
“Anything we could do ourselves, we did,” said Verian
about the renovation process.
Verian states that her husband did a lot of the handiwork,
including building the stage, car-
peting the floor and designing
the lobby.
“My husband helped make my
dream come true,” said Verian.

Daycare
closes in
Garner
after lead
paint
discovered
Ridoutt’s Nursery and Kindergarten, located at 600 Saint
Mary’s St. in Garner, closed
its doors last week after Wake
County discovered lead in their
paint chips.
According to an inspection
of the daycare, dated March
21, the facility needed to be repainted. Paint on a gazebo was
needed as well.
At the time, Wake County
inspectors used an instrument
that found lead in the paint
chips. So, samples were sent to
the N.C. Environmental Health
Branch’s Lead Program for further testing.
Even with the needed paint
updates, the childcare facility
earned a superior classification on the inspection. Since
March, Wake County found
that the paint had lead levels
dangerous to the health of children and workers at the daycare.
However, N.C. Lead and
Child Care Programs Manager
Ed Norman said the state didn’t
pull the daycare’s license.
“We didn’t tell them they had
to close,” Norman said. “That
was their choice.”
He said that while he supports the owners wanting to
take care of the problem in a
timely manner, there were options for dealing with it while
keeping the facility open. They
could remove the paint, abate it
or cover it with lead-free paint.
Covering the paint is the
path most frequently taken because it requires minimal materials – new paint and plastic to
catch any paint chips that may
fall in the future.
“That’s usually a cheaper option, but it’s not permanent,”
Norman said.
Director and Program Manager of the Department of Environmental Health in Wake
County Tommy Esqueda said
the sanitation inspection took
place because the Ridoutts
planned to change the title of
ownership.
Esqueda’s staff had an instrument that took paint chip samples and determined initially
there were traces of lead. But
even if there hadn’t been any
paint chips to collect, the staff
would have found the high levels of lead.
He said no one on his staff
received phone calls from parents claiming their children
were sick constantly at the facility.
The Environmental Health
Dept. did suggest the owners
have parents get their children
checked for lead poisoning just
as a precaution.
Owners Chad and Candy
Ridoutts were not available for
comment. It isn’t known if the
facility will reopen.

O
The Civil Rights
Revolution —
inside and on
the ground
o you remember seeing photos of the 50th anniversary
reunion of the Civil War battle at Gettysburg? Aging veterans from both sides of that war gathered to remember together the horrors of the battle and to celebrate
their common homeland.
As we begin to mark the 50th anniversary of the Civil
Rights struggles of the 1960s, I wonder if there could ever be a Gettysburg type of reunion that would bring together those who battled
for equal rights and those who fought tooth and nail against them.
Unlikely. It is hard these days to find anyone who will stand up with
pride and say that he or she fought against the movement for equal
opportunity.
A new book by Joseph Howell, who is married to my sister Embry,
brought back those times of the early 1960s vividly. His book, “Civil
Rights Journey: The Story of a White Southerner Coming of Age during the Civil Rights Revolution” is a reminder to me of a question that
must haunt every American who lived through
the 1960s and did nothing, or very little, but sit
on the sidelines as historic changes rushed by.
ONE ON
The question: Why didn’t I do more?
Howell asks the same question even as he
ONE
describes how he led demonstrations for equal
rights in Charlotte while he was a student at
Davidson College in the early 1960s. Howell
claims he did not do nearly enough. But as he
cheerfully recalled last year to a reunion of Civil
Rights workers in southwest Georgia, his son’s
eighth grade social studies paper had asserted,
“There were three great leaders of the Civil
Rights Movement, Martin Luther King, Junior,
D.G.
John Lewis, and my dad, Joseph T. Howell.”
Howell’s diary of his and Embry’s experiARTIN
ences during the summer of 1966 in southwest
Georgia is the core of the new book. Howell recorded in detail the struggles of the rural black
family with whom they lived, the door-to-door challenge of persuading blacks to buck the system by registering to vote and voting, the
acquittal by an all white jury of the accused and very guilty white man,
and the frustration of attending scheduled mass meetings that began
hours late and had only 15 people in the audience.
While the Howells were fighting white racism that summer, they
found out that racism could work both ways. Early in the summer
Howell learned about internal conflicts among the Civil Rights leaders
in southwest Georgia.
An inspirational fellow seminary student and leader of the Student
Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Charles Sherrod, recruited the Howells and other white students to work for SNCC at its
Southwest Georgia Project.
What he Howells did not know was that just as they were signing
up to work for SNCC, “the idea of moving from an integrated movement to an all-black movement was being fiercely debated within
SNCC.”
The advocates of “self defense” and “black self-determination” led
by Stokely Carmichael won the debate over Sherrod, John Lewis and
other advocates of SNCC’s original non-violent civil disobedience and
integrated foundations.
“But,” Howell writes, “we did not know this before we got down
there and were the first to experience what it meant.”
“What it meant” according to Howell’s diary was a summer of
confusion and inept leadership taking on the monumental problems
that faced an oppressed black population in the area. And it meant an
adjustment of attitudes by the Howells as they worked for an organization and people who viewed whites as the enemy.
Howell’s diary records his humiliation under the SNCC leadership
on the same pages he describes the humiliations of the local blacks
under the oppressive white power structure.
It is a moving and well-told personal story, but, more importantly,
an insider’s record of an often-overlooked part of the Civil Rights revolution.

Look out for the invasion
of rude people
eware my dear
readers, but,
I’m afraid our
beloved land is
being invaded
by rude people. Lately, I
seem to be running into
and hearing about these illtempered people whenever
I leave my house.
Last week, I was waiting
for a friend to meet me at
a golf course when a small
car pulled into the lot and
parked a spot over from
me. I was busy scanning
the entrance way looking
for my friend and I hardly
noticed the driver of that
vehicle. A few minutes
later, my friend wheeled
into the lot and eased his
car in the spot between
me and the other driver.
Suddenly, seemingly out of
nowhere, the other driver
came rushing around his
car and began barking
at my friend that he had
parked too close to his vehicle. My friend and I were
caught off guard by the
guy’s angry outburst. Be-
B
cause the spaces were so
small, my friend had parked
somewhat close to his car,
but there was plenty of
room for my friend to open
his door without striking
the other guy’s vehicle. My
friend climbed back into
his car and began backing out of the spot, while
I stood
there
in
a
state of
shock,
staring
at this
guy as
he continued
his tiJ.T.
rade.
MITH
His face
w a s
twisted
with rage and his fists were
clenched tight as if he was
ready to go 15 rounds with
Mike Tyson in a boxing
match. Finally, I decided
that I’d heard all I could
take from the jerk. I turned
toward him, and said, “You
S
know, this is a heck of a
way for my friend and me
to start a round of golf
with you out here yelling
at us like we were stupid
or something. I sure hope
your day goes better than
this because, obviously,
it can’t get much worst.”
He didn’t utter a word
in response as I grabbed
my golf clubs and walked
away. A few days later, another friend told me about
an equally rude person
who he had encountered
while waiting in line at a
WalMart. He was standing in the express checkout lane directly behind a
lady, who had a shopping
cart that was overloaded
with groceries. The woman
working the cash register
pleasantly explained to the
lady that the express lane
had a 20-item limit and
she would have to move to
another lane. “Well then,”
the lady snapped. “I’ll let
you ring up 20 items and
I’ll pay for them. Then you
can ring up 20 more items
and I’ll pay for them. And
we can just continue that
process until I’m through.”
The employee called
the manager and explained
the situation to him. The
manager politely told the
lady that she wouldn’t be
allowed to checkout in
the express lane. The lady
glared at the manager,
yanked her pocketbook off
the cart and stormed out of
the store, leaving the cart
full of groceries where they
were for the employees to
restock.
Obviously, the man in
the golf course’s parking lot and the lady at the
WalMart weren’t familiar
with words like respect or
manners. If they had been,
certainly they wouldn’t
act with such ill contempt
in public. Hopefully, they
wouldn’t behave like that
at home, either. I wonder
if they’ve ever paused to
consider how their rude
behavior appears to others? Quite frankly, it disgusts me.

Fear of losses may lead to
negative investment behavior
ike every other investor, you prefer
not to see the value
of your investments
drop. But at some
point they will fall simply because of the ups and downs of
the market.
And how you respond to
short-term losses can help
determine if you enjoy longterm investment success. Investors’ feelings about losses
can be complex. In the field of
economics, an area of study
is devoted to “loss aversion”
— the concept that people
dislike losing money so much
that, given a choice, they’d
prefer to avoid losses rather
than take gains.
For example, if you have a
high degree of loss aversion,
then you will find greater dissatisfaction by losing $100
than you’d get satisfaction
from taking a $100 profit. Loss
aversion can lead to various
forms of negative investment
behavior. Here are two of the
most common results: Seeking “risk-free” investments —
When you think of investment
L
losses, the first thing that
probably comes to mind is a
drop in stock prices. If you’re
really loss-averse, you might
seek to
avoid this
situation
FINANCIAL

JOHN T.
While
some of
RAXTON t h e s e
investments
may seem “risk free,” you
must consider factors such as
inflation risk — the possibility
that these investments may
provide returns that don’t
keep up with the rate of inflation. Holding “losers” too
long — From time to time, you
will own investments that,
for whatever reason, underperform. If you’re highly loss-
B
averse, though, you may have
a tough time acknowledging
the losing nature of these
investments, so you may be
tempted to hold on to them
until they “bounce back.” But
if the investment’s fundamentals change, or if the investment no longer aligns with
your goals, it may be time to
sell it and look for other opportunities. Conversely, you
may want to hold on to quality
investments whose price has
dropped in the short term, because these investments may
well recover.
How can you avoid these
types of behavior? For starters, you’ll need to recognize
the symptoms of loss aversion
in yourself — and then resolve
to overcome them. Accept
the fact that short-term losses
are part of investing and that
every single investment carries some type of risk.
This doesn’t mean, of
course, that you should do
nothing to reduce your risk.
One effective risk-fighting
measure you can take is to
diversify your holdings by in-
vesting in a variety of stocks,
bonds, government securities,
CDs and other investment vehicles. If you had all your holdings in only stocks or bonds,
a downturn primarily affecting
one of those assets could lead
to a big hit for your portfolio.
But by spreading your dollars among a variety of investments, you’re also spreading
the risk. Keep in mind,
though, that diversification by
itself can’t guarantee a profit
or protect against loss.
Investment losses, even
short-term ones, aren’t much
fun. But by not overreacting
to these losses, and by diversifying your portfolio in a way
that best meets your individual needs, you can look past
today’s losses toward tomorrow’s possibilities.

Saving money
on hotels
Chamber of Commerce
Ambassador patrols
make surprise visits
ecently my family
found themselves halfway across the United
States and having to
spend several days in
hotels. While I love being frugal,
I have to admit I will NOT stay in
scary hotels to
save a buck.
While I do not
FRUGAL
want to stay in
FAMILY
the top of the
line hotels, I
insist we stay
somewhere that
is clean and that
I do not fear for
my life.
The first thing
I would recomSTEPHANIE EATON mend when staying in a hotel
ARVIE
is find out if
the hotel offers
any type of discounts. Many hotels offer discounts
for seniors, AAA members or military. For example, we contacted a
hotel and saved over $70 a night
because they offered a military discount.
Several hotels also offer deals.
Some of the deals that we have experienced are that if you stay several nights with them you get nights
free or if you have a preferred customer card with that hotel you receive discounts. I find if you simply
do a little research you can save a
lot of money.
Another way we saved money
this travel season is that we stayed
in hotels that offered not only free
breakfasts but also free dinners
with your stays. We stayed at the
Residence Inn, which offers free
breakfasts and dinners during the
week and free breakfasts on the
weekends. The hotel also provided
us with a full kitchen in our room so
that we could save money by cooking our own meals and not having to
rely on fast food.
Another hotel chain we visited
was the Drury Inn. This hotel chain
also provided us with free breakfast
and dinners. My kids loved it.
I cannot tell you the massive
amount of money we saved by
not having to purchase our family
breakfast or dinners during our
stays at various hotels this summer.
Another benefit to the Drury Inn
and Residence Inn was that both hotels were pet friendly which allowed
us to take our beloved Pug with us
on our travels.
Another tip I would recommend
is to contact the hotel directly and
do not just accept their rates on
their websites. In every single case
that we contacted the hotel directly,
we received bigger savings than
was offered to us online.

New Statewide Artist directory
announced, application
deadline is Aug. 15
The North Carolina Arts
Council will produce a new
online Artist Directory to
connect actors, dancers,
musicians, writers and visual
artists living and working in
the state with potential opportunities to reach new audiences.
The deadline for artists
to apply for the 2012–2014
Artist Directory is Monday,
Aug. 15.
“The Artist Directory will
showcase the talent of artists
in North Carolina while providing a range of ways artists
can share their work and expertise with the public,” said
Jeff Pettus, senior program
director for artists and organizations. “The online format is
an easy way for arts organizations, schools and presenters
to find artists to hire for programs, residencies, commissions, workshops and other
activities.”
The new Artist Directory
is a successor to the popular Touring Artist Directory,
which has been produced by
the Arts Council every two to
three years since 1992.
The directory expands the
types of activities artists can
CONTRIBUTED PHOTO
promote to include not only
performances, residencies
and workshops but commissions, consultancies, guest
curatorial work and artistic
direction, mentoring and
panel service.
Amy Jo Wood Pasquini,
marketing director for Our
State magazine, frequently
uses the Touring Artist Directory to book artists for
the magazine’s Best of Our
State events.
“The expansion of the directory to other art forms
will be extremely beneficial
for those of us that incorporate artists into our programs and promotions,”
Wood said.
North Carolina artists
who are at least 18 years
of age and have been yearround residents of the
state for at least a year
immediately prior to the
application deadline may
apply. Students are not
eligible.
Guidelines for the directory can be found on the
Arts Council’s home page
at www.ncarts.org. Click

Child nutrition
services mails meal
benefit applications
to all families
Every household with a child in Wake County
Schools will be mailed a Free & Reduced price
meal application this year, to ensure all parents
are fully informed of the benefits. The decision to
mail to every household provides an opportunity
for every qualified family to enroll in the federal
program.
“We are mailing information directly to families and will work with schools to survey parents
to ensure they have the chance to respond,” said
Marilyn Moody, senior director of Child Nutrition
Services. “The actual salary schedule will be on
the application. Based on the number of family
members, parents can determine if their salary
income fits within those standards. We want to
help families who are perhaps temporarily out
of work, collecting unemployment or workers
compensation, or any short-term situation that a
family might be experiencing.”
The parents of year-round students began
receiving the six-page packet of information the
week of July 4.
Families must apply each year to receive the
benefits. Families with students on a traditional
calendar will receive their mailing in August.
To assist families, schools and Child Nutrition
Services will have additional copies of the forms,
and Child Nutrition Services staff can help families complete the form. Parents can return the
completed forms to their schools or to the Child
Nutrition Services office address listed on the application.
All CNS cafeteria managers can assist families
in completing the application. Child Nutrition Services has bilingual staff at the CNS offices located
at 1551 Rock Quarry Road available to help families. The office hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, and the phone number is 856-2920.

Tim Greene Trio featured
at Piney Grove Chapel
Talented vocal group, The Tim Greene
Trio will be featured in a special worship
service on Sunday, July 24 at Piney Grove
Chapel Baptist Church. This exciting musical service will begin at 6 p.m.
For more than two decades, Tim Greene
traveled with his popular musical family, The
Greenes. Throughout those years the group
achieved national and international notoriety, earning a Dove Award from the Gospel Music Association, as well as a Grammy
Award.
During that time, the talented songwriter
penned more than 500 songs and ministered
in churches, auditoriums and arenas nationwide. In 2000, Tim became paralized after
being exposed to toxic black mold.
This severe condition forced him to retire
from the road and spend the next seven years
in treatment for extended periods of time in
various hospitals. Finally, in May of 2009,
Tim experienced a miraculous healing, and
since that time he has traveled nationwide
sharing his story of that miraculous healing.
In 2010, Tim’s youngest brother, Tony,
passed away after complications from a kidney transplant. Under Tony’s leadership,
The Greenes excelled tremendously, carrying the message of the Gospel in song
throughout the country.
Following Tony’s death, Tim began much
soul searching, prayer and seeking God’s
will for his life. Compelled by the burning
desire to keep the Greenes’ musical ministry
alive, Tim announced plans in January 2011
to organize The Tim Greene Trio.
“We simply want to be obedient to whatever the Lord has in store,” Tim says. “My
brother, Tony, dedicated his life to sharing
the message of the Gospel in song. Growing
up in the mountains of Boone, N.C., that was
all we wanted to do, and in a small way, I believe this ministry will continue to keep that
legacy alive. I know Tony would be pleased.”
Make plans now to be a part of this special evening. All those in attendance at Piney
Grove Chapel Baptist Church on Sunday,

Dangerous temperatures
prompt warning from
Safe Kids North Carolina
RALEIGH — Insurance Commissioner
Wayne Goodwin, chair of Safe Kids North
Carolina, reminds parents and caregivers to
never leave a child unattended in a vehicle,
for any length of time.
With its soaring temperatures, July is historically the deadliest month for child fatalities in hot cars, but hyperthermia can occur
even on days with mild 70 degree temperatures.
Even a few minutes of heat exposure in a
closed vehicle can kill a child or pet.
Some of these deaths occur when a parent
or caregiver accidentally forgets a child in a
car; some occur when a child is intentionally
left in a vehicle. In other cases, a child was
playing in an unattended vehicle when overtaken by heat.
“These deaths can be prevented,” said
Goodwin. “Never leave a child unattended in
a vehicle or let a child play in a vehicle. If you
see a child alone in a car, call 911 right away.”
Follow these safety tips from Safe Kids
North Carolina:
n Never leave a child alone in a vehicle.
Check to make sure all children exit the vehicle when you reach your destination.
n Lock the doors when your vehicle is
parked. Teach children that cars are not
places to play.
n As a busy parent, you have a lot on your
mind, so give yourself a reminder. Place your
purse, briefcase or other important item in
the backseat next to your child’s seat to help
you remember to look in the back before leaving the car.
n Set a reminder on your cell phone or
other mobile device to remind you to drop off
children at school or daycare when routines
change.
n Make an agreement with your child’s
school or day care that you will be notified
if your child is not dropped off at the normal
time.
n If you see a child or a pet left unattended
in a vehicle, call 911 immediately.
n Check vehicles and trunks first if a child
goes missing.

Reality of war nearly
overhwhelms Kidd
WW II veteran recalls horrorific experience
in French countryside
By Shawn Daley
E
Standing in a French
field littered with the decaying corpses of American
soldiers, Claude Kidd used
every ounce of his self-restraint to contain his emotions.
The 21-year-old North
Carolina native had been
in France less than one full
day and was already experiencing one of the most unimaginable horrors of war.
Less than a week after
the invasion of Normandy,
Kidd arrived in Europe as
a replacement soldier assigned to the 30th Infantry
Division. He barely had
time to become acquainted
with his new surroundings
when he was approached by
his company’s sergeant.
The sergeant didn’t waste
much time on pleasantries.
He told Kidd the unit had
suffered a high number of
casualties since D-Day, but
replacements were plentiful. The problem wasn’t a
lack of men, he said, but
rather a lack of weapons for
the men to use.
Kidd struggled to believe
the words he heard next.
The sergeant was taking
him and several other men
on a weapons-gathering
mission in a nearby field
where an American unit
had been nearly wiped out.
The group was ordered to
retrieve all weapons and
ammunition from the bodies of the dead.
What awaited Kidd in
that field was a scene from
a horrible nightmare.
“This was a shocking experience for me,” said Kidd.
“The guys were still lying
in the field and some of
them were swollen, bloated
and had turned black from
being in the heat. They
would still have a grip on
their rifle and two or three
bandoleers of ammunition
around their neck and you
had to pull it off them. It
was terrible being exposed
to that type of thing.”
As the men silently went
about their terrible chore,
Kidd tried not to look at the
faces of the dead. It pained
him to think of the families
awaiting news of their fate
back in America.
But as Kidd went from
body to body in search of
tools of war, he struggled
to maintain his composure.
“I wanted to just throw
my hands up and holler,”
said Kidd. “It affected me
but I kept it hidden. I knew
what I had to do and I did
it. I still kind of shiver when
I think about it. You don’t
know who (the soldiers) are
or what happened. Some
had a leg torn off or half
their head was missing.”
The enthusiasm to fight
for his country, which had
held such a tight grip on
Kidd since the attack on
Pearl Harbor, was suddenly
tempered by the reality of
war.
Six decades later, a retrospective Kidd can only
shake his head when he
thinks how quickly his
youthful innocence faded in
that blood-stained field.
“It was one of those
things, looking back at it,
that you think, ‘Why in
the world did I ever get involved with something like
this?” said Kidd.
Unfortunately for Kidd, it
was a question that would
prove applicable repeatedly
during his time in the war.
Color blind
Growing up on a Surry
County farm in the 1920s
and ‘30s meant hard work
and lots of it. The farm of
Thomas Jefferson Kidd and
his wife, Bertia, was no exception.
The Kidds raised seven
children – four boys and
three girls – on their farm
near Mt. Airy and each one
was given a list of chores at
a very early age.
“My dad would assign us
chores without any formality,” said Kidd, who was
born in 1923. “We all did
what we had to do or else.”
If any of the children ever
thought about complaining
they kept it to themselves,
especially when they saw
how hard their mother
worked.
“My mother was in the
fields like everyone else,”
said Kidd. “Then she would
have to come back to the
house and prepare supper.
It was a real working family.”
Despite all the work,
Kidd remembers his childhood with plenty of fondness. But the close-knit
family suffered a terrible
blow in 1940 when Bertia
passed away.
“I didn’t miss a day of
school until my senior year
of high school when my
mother died,” said Kidd.
An enthusiastic student
who loved to learn, Kidd
was eager to attend N.C.
State University and study
agriculture. The problem,
however, was trying to find
a way to pay for it.
With some financial help
from his brother, Kidd decided to travel to Raleigh in
the fall of 1941 and enroll
in school. If things didn’t
work out he could at least
find some solace in the
knowledge that he gave it
his best shot.
Fortune finally smiled on
Kidd when a sympathetic
professor befriended him.
“When you have a (big)
family like we had and you
had a bad year and tobacco
was only brining four or
five cents a pound, there’s
not too much money available to go to school,” said
Kidd. “I couldn’t afford to
pay anything but I had an
ag teacher who sort of took
me under his wing.
“He took me to lunch
at Ma Hudson’s diner on
Hillsborough Street and it
turned out she was hiring. I
didn’t know anything about
waiting on tables but I was
eager and she hired me.”
Focused on school and
his job, Kidd didn’t pay attention to the rumors that
America might soon go to
war.
“Talk about war didn’t
faze me too much,” said
Kidd. “A 17 or 18-year-old
guy isn’t going to be too
concerned about it. But
later on, when we had to
register for the draft and
ROTC, that was the only
thing I got straight A’s in.”
The talk about war
shifted from speculation to

Reality of war nearly overhwhelms Kidd
CONTINUED
present tense after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor
on Dec. 7, 1941. After hearing about it on the radio, the
thought of all those warships
under attack was difficult for
Kidd to comprehend.
“It was hard for me to
imagine because I had
never even seen a big ship,”
said Kidd.
But it wasn’t ships that
Kidd was interested in anyway. He was enamored with
the thought of flying and
signed up in 1942 to become
a pilot.
Those lofty dreams were
quickly grounded.
“I just loved the air corps,
so I joined,” said Kidd. “I
went for my medical tests
and everything was going
great. Then they did an eye
test. ‘Well, Mr. Kidd, that
is the end of your air corps
career. You are color blind.’
From that time on I was in
the infantry.”
Kidd was sent to Camp
Wheeler, Ga., for basic training before receiving advanced
instruction at camps in Florida.
It was during his early days
in the military that Kidd began
to realize how isolated he had
been on his family farm.
“I was a real country boy,”
said Kidd. “I went with a
buddy to visit his parents in
Boston. They lived in one of
those big skyscrapers. You
had to take an elevator and
I couldn’t believe it. I never
saw anything like that before.”
American units continue to
absorb high casualties while
fighting among the hedgerows.
His company went through
five sergeants in a matter of
weeks.
“We had this country boy
in our unit, I can’t remember
his name, who was sitting
with us one day when they
brought our new sergeant,”
said Kidd. “He looked at him
and said, ‘Welcome to France,
sergeant. That makes you the
fifth one we’ve had so far.”
Through the next several
weeks, Kidd experienced
fierce combat in the hedgerows and in the push to capture the town of St. Lo.
By the time the Americans
captured it, St. Lo was little
more than a rubble heap.
“They brought in trucks,
re-equipped us and moved
us out,” said Kidd. “We went
right through what was left of
the town. We had to zigzag
because the streets were all
bombed out. I was so happy
to leave that area because it
was nothing but bad, bad corruption.”
Kidd’s unit was sent to
an area outside of Mortain,
France and dug in on a rocky
outcrop known as Hill 314.
FROM
PAGE 3B
“You couldn’t dig a hole
any deeper than (two feet)
because it was a rocky area,”
said Kidd. “So you dug as
deep as you could and then
fortified it as well as you could
with boards or whatever else
on top.”
Kidd, now a newly promoted sergeant, didn’t even
have time to finish digging
his foxhole when a captain
ordered him and two other
soldiers to make contact with
a unit hunkered down in a
nearby barn.
The mission didn’t seem
overly hazardous and Kidd
felt little trepidation as the
trio set off on foot to locate
the unit.

of a major German counter- heavy fighting near Mortain, France.
offensive he may have felt a
little different.
Within hours, the entire
area would be thick with German panzers and troops.
By the next day, Kidd
would be a prisoner of war.

story will appear
in next week’s
edition.

Need Help Writing An
Effective Classified Ad?
• Start your ad with the item for sale,
service you are offering, or job title for
the person you seek to hire.
• Be descriptive. The more information you
provide to the reader, the better the
responses will be to your ad.
• Always include the price of any item
for sale.
• Avoid abbreviations. They make your ad
harder to read and less effective.
• Use Bold type, centering, or box your ad
to bring attention to your ad.
• Run your ad for an ample length of time.
Remember, as soon as you get results,
you can cancel at any time during
