The Most Holy Trinity May 22, 2016 The Pastor’s Desk Dear Friends, May the Lord give you peace! Although you will see me around today, I’ve been away all week visiting my mom. I am very grateful to all of you who ask for her and are praying for her. She is doing well and adjusting to life without my dad. My mom has always been a positive and forwardthinking woman and that is a great gift and blessing for her these days! Thanks again! Last Saturday (May 14), we finished up all our First Communion celebrations. I’d like to congratulate all our students who received First Communion and I’d like to thank Alma Banta and all the teachers who prepared our children. The celebrations were all great! We also celebrated Confirmation on April 29 and May 6. Congratulations to all our youth who were confirmed and thanks to Pat Newton, the Youth Ministry staff and all of our confirmation coordinators and retreat team members who prepared our youth for confirmation! This is college graduation season and I know we have many college graduates in the parish. Congratulations to all of you and best of luck as you move on to the next chapter of your life. You will be in our prayers. Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Trinity. The Trinity is all about an intimate relationship. It is the Great Mystery of Three Persons in One God. The Holy Trinity, therefore, makes all our relationships sacred. Our families and our friendships form the core of our relationships, but there is so much more. Our relationship with strangers, acquaintances, the Church and the entire world must all be informed by the Holy Trinity. They must be mutual, life giving and welcoming, just like the Holy Trinity. On this great feast take some time to give thanks to God for your most intimate and life-giving relationships. At the same time, take some time to thank God for the relationships in your life that you don’t think about very often. Finally, take some time to thank God for your relationship with the Church and the world. Do all you can to make them mutual, life giving and welcoming! Thanks for a great week and best wishes for a great one to come! Pace e Bene, Fr. Frank Sevola, OFM, Pastor Fr. Frank can be reached at [email protected] Page 4 Christmas on the Danube with Fr. Second video: Molokai, The Story of Father Damien Presenter: Paul Sansone Tuesdays, June 7, 14, 21, 28 at 7:00 PM in the Carnevale Center Rooms 009 and 010 We will read and discuss some of the major passages in the first part of Isaiah (Isaiah 1-39) to understand what his message meant to the people of his own time and to the earliest Christians, who re-read these prophecies as illuminations of the life of Jesus. The fourth-century biblical scholar Jerome said Isaiah was not so much a prophet as an evangelist, because he so clearly recounted the mysteries of Christ and the Church that he seemed to be compiling a record of things that have already taken place, rather than prophesying about what was to come. Please call Marie Cioletti, Special Needs Director, 973.628.8473 or email: [email protected] TRINITY W e begin every Sunday Liturgy with the sign of the cross: "In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Often the gesture we make with those words becomes rote, even meaningless because we do it so automatically. Yet, this gesture is one of the most basic and profound signs of our faith. The gesture of crossing ourselves not only praises the Trinity but makes a powerful statement about who we are. How carefully do we make the sign? How aware are we of the implications of "signing" ourselves? This gesture could be so much more powerful if it were done with attention and reverence. Since today is Trinity Sunday, perhaps we should make a special effort at signing ourselves with attention and devotion. Instead of trying to "explain" the Trinity, we might take more care at expressing our belief by the way we make the sign of the cross. Fr. Richard, OFM Together we can change peoples lives! William J. Reilly The Most Holy Trinity “Jesus said to his disciples: ‘I have much more to tell you, but you cannot hear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth… Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.” “….because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” Our faith today tells us two things. The first is the existence of the Trinity, as the passage of St. John speaks of Father and Spirit referred to by Jesus himself. The second is that the mystery of the Trinity is not something not distant from us, but it is within, and has been “poured out into our hearts.” Maybe I can bless myself more reverently as I proclaim my faith in the mystery of God. When I see an athlete rapidly make the sign of the cross, may it remind me, not of faith, but of what He has poured into my heart. When I am looking for direction on a GPS or map, may I be reminded that it is the promised spirit of Jesus who will guide me. When I am in doubt, making a decision, may I ask the Spirit, the gift of the Father and Son, to assist me. I cannot fully understand this mystery, but can acknowledge it and use it well. Page 14 THE MOST HOLY TRINITY First Reading: Proverbs 8:22-31—God created Wisdom before he created the earth or the skies. This spirit stood beside God every day until the earth was complete, then "found delight in the people of the earth." This indicates that the spirit of wisdom was later personified by Jesus. Second Reading: Romans 5:1-5—Paul says that we are now at peace with God through our faith in Jesus. We also hope to see the glory of God. This hope will not leave us disappointed because of the love God has shown in sending us the Holy Spirit. Gospel: John 16:12-15—Jesus tells the disciples that when he leaves them, a Spirit will help guide them to the truth. This Spirit will announce what he hears from Jesus, rather than speaking on his own. Everything God has also belongs to Jesus, which is why those things announced by the Spirit will actually come from Jesus. Collection Update April 2016 Sunday and Misc.
