If God is good, how could He allow it. There is terror and war, especially now in Israel (which we had just visited on our parish pilgrimage). There are tragedies such as the car accident that broke the neck of Jeremy Phillips, the lead altar server of our 5:30 PM Saturday Mass. There is illness and death in each of our families. There are bad people who corrupt our children and lead them astray. Jesus is the answer to life’s questions. He answers by suffering Himself; by dying Himself; and also by telling parable stories which help explain the mysteries of the Kingdom: “Jesus spoke to the crowds only in parables.” For example, He speaks about a “mustard seed” that is almost too small to see, but which grows into the largest shrub. Only in heaven will we see the true unfolding of the events that happen in this short life. We will comprehend them only in heaven when it all unfolds. God will explain to us all the reasons for the things that happen. “He also tells a parable about weeds. He says “Let them grow together until harvest.” These terrible words let us know that God’s mysterious plan is to allow evil to develop along with the good in this life. He wants us to put up with the weeds of life. Evil is allowed because it allows for the possibility of even greater good: “If you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along with them.” When we see the courageous faith of Jeremy and his family, we are all inspired. From suffering can come mysterious fruits of salvation. Let us all pray for a miracle of healing for Jeremy, but also for the grace to imitate Christ who offered up His pain on the tree of the cross for the salvation of souls. We are the wheat which will be gathered and ground to form pure bread to be offered to the Father. “Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.” Like St. Joseph’s? Junipero Serra Religious Education July 1 was the feast day of Blessed Junipero Serra, the great Franciscan missionary, who brought the Catholic faith to the new world. Miguel José Serra was born in Majorca, Spain in 1713, an excellent student who entered the novitiate at the age of sixteen. He was later sent to study and earn a doctorate, becoming a professor at the University of Palma. Junipero was a very good preacher and scholar, who was inspired by the missionary work of St. Francis Solano in South America. In 1789, Junipero left for what was to become California. He landed in Monterey and celebrated Mass overlooking the bay. His zeal and love for God and souls, led him to found nine missions, walk 24,000 miles, and convert six thousand. His motto was “always go forward and never go back!” His indomitable spirit and untiring labor laid the foundation for today’s Californian agriculture. Junipero’s fatherly love for the natives was often the basis for his perennial fight with the military and the governors, who often sought to take advantage of them. Despite his age and a wounded leg that became ulcerated, he chose a life of hardship, helping many to know Christ. Junipero’s first desire as a disciple was the eternal salvation of all souls, and not just their temporal well-being. This great Franciscan missionary, who laid all before God and the Church, has left his imprint in this state. Those who visit the missions are often surprised and impressed by the great skill, vision and dedication of this little friar. The words, “speak Lord, for your servant is listening,” were lived by Fr. Serra until his death from tuberculosis at 70 years old. He came to the wilderness of the new world and its natives, and was able to shepherd his flock toward God. Let us ask Fr. Junipero Serra to intercede for all of us as as we labor to bring Christ to our brothers and sisters, who have returned to a state of spiritual wilderness. Fr. Junipero Serra, pray for us! Respect Life Corner RCIA Inquiry classes are for people who want to learn more about Catholicism, but aren’t necessarily sure they want to become Catholic. From our Holy Father in Rome NO ONE CAN JUDGE One who judges “always gets it wrong”. He’s wrong, Pope Francis explained, “because he takes the place of God, who is the only judge: taking that place is taking the wrong place!”. Believing you have the authority to judge everything: people, life, everything”. And “with the capacity to judge” you also assume you have “the capacity to condemn”. This person “doesn’t only get it wrong; he also gets confused”. And “he often becomes obsessed with whom he wants to judge, with that person — so, so very obsessed!” Sometimes losing sleep over that “speck”, he repeats, “But I want to remove that speck for you!”. Meanwhile, he isn’t aware “of the log he has” in his own eye... Therefore, “the arrogant and condescending judge who assumes the wrong place, because he is taking God’s place, is betting on a loser”. Who is the loser? “The one who is judged by the same measure by which he judges”, the Pope clarified. From her early childhood, Mary was involved in the parish life: VBR and Children`s Holy Hour with her dad, junior sacristan for the 5:45pm daily Mass, and other activities. About 2 years ago, Mary joined our Hand Bells Choir family, generously sharing her music talent, playing bells for parish concerts and liturgies. Mary also adores singing for God and has a very pretty voice. Her desire is to become a church musician (at the age of four, Mary already started to practice piano). This year, first time, she successfully sang as a cantor for the Home School Graduation Mass. For Mary, faith is a very important part of her life. Being so young, Mary is working hard on her journey to follow Jesus and become a good steward: “I love to support other people and my family as much as I can.” She loves everybody around her, people and animals. One of her hobbies is to raise chickens and rabbits. We are very thankful for all your work that you do for God and His people!
