programación
Por mor del Siete, del año Siete, de Dos Mil Siete en el que somos, por el
impulso mágico del Siete
Siete Maravillas del Mundo
Siete Colores del Arco
Siete Días de la Semana...
la Bienal “Málaga en Flamenco´07” configura su programa en Siete
Ciclos de Conciertos y Espectáculos, conteniendo cada uno de ellos
otros tantos en idéntico número de Siete, de manera que son en total
49 para manifestarse entre los días 25 de agosto y 30 de septiembre.
Con este formato, uno entre los posibles, se define el programa de la
Bienal “Málaga en Flamenco´07”. Se delimitan campos y territorios con
el fin de que el Festival, en su expresión conjunta, tenga personalidad
propia, tenga argumentos, tenga sentido, y no sea una mera sucesión
de actuaciones adosadas. Así es diferente a la inmediata anterior y a
las que vengan sucesivas, con perfil distinto y único, por sus formas
y sus hechos.
“Málaga en Flamenco´07” es un acontecimiento artístico de proyección y alcance universal. Por la categoría y calidad de sus participantes y programas. Por la singularidad de muchos de los espacios de
exhibición que se contemplan. Un escaparate extraordinario, incluso
fabuloso, y unos contenidos de excepción.
Bajo el principio rector del Siete -que domina- se estructura, tal se ha
dicho, el certamen. Muestra cabal del Género Flamenco en los albores del siglo XXI. Pujante más que nunca en su reconocimiento internacional, consolidado y al alza.
Para presentarlo al mundo, la ciudad de Málaga y su Provincia se
convierten en Espacio Flamenco de Atención Preferente; ofrecen su
naturaleza y su afición, también su Arte, en una convocatoria abierta
a la hondura y a la creación, al luminoso sol de la belleza según se
ve a la vera del Mar Mediterráneo.

de mijas, inaugurado oficialmente el pasado mes de marzo, cuenta
con una de las mejores instalaciones de la provincia para dar cabida
a todo tipo de espectáculos.

antiguamente llamado el teatro de la libertad, es el gran teatro de
málaga. su reconstrucción se llevó a cabo en 1870 por gerardo cuervo
y los pintores muñoz degrain y bernardo ferrándiz, autor del maravilloso lienzo alegórico de la ciudad que puede contemplarse en su techo. se suma como monumento histórico artístico al centro histórico
de la ciudad. posee un aforo de 900 localidades dispuestas en un patio
de butacas y palcos. tiene una acústica notable y un escenario polivalente y amplio para dar cabida a espectáculos de gran formato.

teatro cánovas de málaga
el teatro cánovas, ubicado en el campus universitario de el ejido, es un
teatro joven, dinámico y moderno, en la actualidad el más valorado
por sus usuarios de la red andaluza de teatros de la consejería de
cultura de la junta de andalucía. de un aforo limitado, 300 localidades, se proyecta como un espacio íntimo y cercano al espectador.

teatro de la nueva sede de la diputación de málaga
La nueva sede de la Diputación Provincial enclavada en el Paseo Marítimo de Poniente cuenta con uno de los teatros más polivalentes de la
ciudad y con el moderno diseño del arquitecto, Luis Machuca, autor
del edificio. Posee 400 localidades y está acondicionado con todo tipo
de equipamientos e infraestructuras para ofrecer espectáculos. Cómoda y espaciosa sala para el espectador.

una vez mejorados sus iniciales problemas de acústica, el nuevo palacio de la paz se ha convertido en el mejor espacio cultural multiusos
para la representación de todo tipo de espectáculos, exposiciones y ponencias de la villa blanca. está situado junto al recinto ferial, en la
zona de los boliches, donde es fácil llegar desde la a7 y encontrar
aparcamiento cerca del mismo. está elevado en tres plantas sobre una
superficie de 2.000 m2. no muy lejos de éste, pueden visitarse las termas
romanas de torreblanca del sol.

teatro municipal de álora
De fácil encuentro, en la periferia del casco urbano de esta pequeña
localidad del valle del guadalhorce, pero a su vez muy cercana a su
intrincado y pintoresco centro hostórico, el flamante teatro miguel
de cervantes de álora se presenta como un teatro bien acondicionado técnicamente y de perfil moderno. cuenta con 400 localidades. a
pocos metros del mismo quedó erigido el monumento a la población,
como cuna de la malagueña y a pocas calles una placa recuerda la
antigua residencia temporal de miguel de cervantes en álora, antiguo
vecino del que recibe ahora el nombre este recinto.

teatro municipal de marbella
aunque nuevo, el teatro municipal de marbella rememora en su fisonomía el clásico estilo a la italiana, con patio de butacas, palcos y anfiteatro. se encuentra enclavado entre el barrio de albarizas y de la divina
pastora, cerca del estadio de fútbol local. cuenta con 480 localidades
y disfruta de un escenario apto para espectáculos de pequeño y medio
formato.

teatro vicente espinel de ronda
dentro de la infraestructura de recreo de la turística y pinturera ciudad de ronda, el teatro vicente espinel se asoma también a su famoso
tajo, desde la alameda. muy cerca de la plaza de toros y del parador,
es un teatro de reciente creación, de 1994, aunque la ciudad de la serranía ya contó con dos extintos teatros del mismo nombre. ahora
goza de éste, activo y funcional, con 520 localidades.

incluida dentro del conservatorio superior de música de málaga,
cuya creación data de 1880 y estando el ilustre compositor malagueño
eduardo ocón al frente del mismo ha sido y es plataforma de ensayo y
proyección de importantes músicos locales. ubicada en el campus universitario de el ejido posee un aforo de 520 localidades distribuidas en
patio de butacas y anfiteatro. ha sido recientemente remozada en su fisionomía, ganando comodidad y espacio y goza de una buena acústica.

rotundo y hermoso ruedo de piedra asomado al tajo de la historia romántica de ronda. testigo de grandes episodios taurinnos e históricos
de la montaraz y flamenca capital de la serranía. es una de las plazas
de toros más antiguas del mundo, data de 1785. su fisonomía interna la
conforman 136 columnas de piedra que sostienen 68 arcos, suenta además con un bello artesonado en madera bajo techumbre a dos aguas,
de corte arabesco. su primitivo diseño neoclásico corresponde al arquitecto josé martín aldehuela, el mismo que le puso puente al tajo.
entre sus peculiaridades se encuentran que posee el ruedo más grande
de cuantos existen en españa, el palco presidencial sobre la salida de
toriles además de una bella portada de cantería.

la historia se arremolina en las ocho esquinas de esta singularísima
plaza de archidona, de la comarca nororiental de málaga, para exhibirse como un paradigmático ejemplo de arquitectura afrancesada,
culta y cortesana, del siglo xviii ofreciendo igualmente reminiscencias
de lo andaluz en lo decorativo.
la misma plaza alberga una iglesia rupestre del siglo x, mozárabe y que
está totalmente excavada en la roca. su buen estado de conservación
permite admirar su cabecera tripartita, el crucero y las naves, características de este tipo de construcciones.
en el siglo xvii a principios del xx sería posada real. con su gracioso reloj presidiéndola, hoy día, merece un paseo soleado en cualquier época
del año, abastece de tranquilidad y sosiego al lugareño y se impregna
de colores, olores, bullicio, campanilleos y saetas cuando llega semana santa.

cueva de nerja
la cueva de nerja responde al nombre del secreto mejor guardado de
la orografía de la costa del sol oriental. descubierta por cinco jóvenes de maro en 1959, aunque habitada en la prehistoria, la fabulosas
entrañas de este monumento nacional tienen una edad aproximada de
250.000 años. entre sus muchos atractivos cuenta con la sala del cataclismo donde puede verse la columna natural más grande del mundo
de 50 metros de altura. entre este bosque de piedra y agua también se
encuentran muestras de arte rupestre y, desde hace muchos años, la
sala de la cascada se adecua como auditorio para conciertos de música y baile.

castillo sohail de fuengirola
Varios son los testimonios de viajeros árabes que durante la etapa de
al andalus hicieron mención de esta magnífica fortaleza a la vera del
mar mediterráneo y el río fuengirola. enseñoreada sobre una colina
de 38 metros de altura en el límite oeste de fuengirola su especial emplazamiento justifica su continuo poblamiento por fenicios, púnicos,
romanos, musulmanes y cristianos, aunque su construcción actual
nos remite al concepto y datación de alcazaba árabe. también fue plaza hostigada por el legendario pirata barbarroja y testigo mudo de
muchos episodios de contrabandistas debido a su cercanía con el peñón de gibraltar, así como de la ocupación napoleónica, fue castillo
privado con la desamortización de mendizábal e incluso acuertelamento de la guardia civil ya en el siglo xx. hoy día es un bello auditorio de verano, sobre todo, donde la música deleita en su diálogo con
su maravilloso emplazamiento y con todo el pasado del escenario.
Paseo Marítimo Rey de España. Fuengirola
casa del ingeniero del embalse conde del guadalhorce
enclavado en el término municipal de ardales, la casa del ingeniero
o casa del conde de guadalhorce se encuentra junto al embalse del
mismo nombre. esta obra de ingeniería civil fue llevada a cabo por rafael benjumea, al cual fue otorgado el título de conde de guadalhorce de mano del rey alfonso xiii. con un embarcadero propio, rodeado
por la vegetación del parque natural que se extiende por la comarca,
este palacete resulta un lugar envidiable para disfrutar de las impresionantes gargantas que ofrece el desfiladero de los gaitanes, donde
también se encuentra el caminito del rey, pasarela colgada sobre los
mismos. su propia ubicación y el gusto aburguesado-señorial de esta
construcción es ya un maravilloso atractivo para su visita.

el torcal de antequera
el bosque de rocas de el torcal está catalogado como uno de los paisajes geológicos más singulares de europa y fue declarado paraje natural en 1978, siendo uno de los ecosistemas del sur de europa menos
alterado, formado ya en el periodo jurásico. con 20 kilómetros cuadrados de extensión, entre sus inverosímiles formas rocosas, también
alberga una rica vegetación autóctona, así como entre la fauna es
posible encontrarse con buitres leonados, cabras montesas, tejones,
lirones o comadrejas.

real colegiata de santa maría la mayor de antequera
paradigmática construcción del primer estilo renacentista y de reminiscencias góticas tardías. su construcción corresponde a la primera
mitad del siglo xiv, la grandiosidad de su fachada se suma a la gran
riqueza monumental de la ciudad de el torcal.
el interior está salpicado de columnas jónicas que lo dividen en tres
naves, pese a lo que pudiera pensarse no alberga elementos ornamentales ni retablos, pues no se dedica al culto, sino a acoger conciertos y
actividades culturales. enclavada en el casco urbano de la ciudad está
muy cerca de otros de los muchos monumentos que adornan la ciuda
milenaria de antequera.

construcción megalítica de la prehistoria enclavada al noreste de la
ciudad de antequera, a sus afueras. el dolmen de antequera, más antiguo y tosco, junto a los del romeral y viera, cercanos, son señal inequívoca de la importancia y sacralidad que esta tierra tuvo en la antiguedad. es una galería cubierta de planta casi rectangular. y responde
a la denominación de cámara sepulcral. el conjunto se cubre con cinco enormes losas, siendo la última la más grande, de unos 6 metros de
longitud por 7 de lado y un peso aproximado de unas 180 toneladas.
además está orientada hacia la peña de los enamorados, a la que se le
supone atribuían carácter sagrado. también tiene tallados en la roca
de la entrada unos enigmáticos símbolos. es uno de los dólmenes más
espectaculares de la península ibérica y, probablemente, de toda europa.

Con el mar mediterráneo como telón de fondo y en la confluencia de
los barrios de pedregalejo y el palo, ambos de vieja tradición pescaora
y flamenca, este escenario ofrece la sal y el sol de la costa malagueña, al abrigo de sus merenderos y sus jaberas tendidas al arrullo del
litoral más pintoresco que le queda a la capital

Majestuoso coso taurino anejo al centro histórico de la ciudad, inmersa en el pastueño y señorial barrio del mismo nombre. es la séptima
plaza de toros que ha tenido la ciudad, inaugurada en 1876. la malagueta tiene forma de polígono regular de 18 lados, el ruedomide 52
metros y tiene una capacidad aproximada de 12.000 espectadores. fue
declarada monumento histórico artístico en 1976. la plaza sigue el
modelo de la de puerta de alcalá en madrid. además del tendido tiene
dos pisos de gradas y palcos que se sostienen en la parte interior por
pilares de hierro rematados con cabezas de toros y caballos enlazados mediante arcos del mismo material y unidos por una barandilla
también de hierro. cuenta con un museo taurino inaugurado en 1999.

esta céntrica plaza de la capital de la axarquía, cuna del mítico cantaor juan breva, aglutina en su entorno algunas joyas del patrimonio
histórico local como la iglesia de san juan, cuyo origen está en la toma
de la ciudad por el rey fernando el católico, y de resonancias árabes
en sus azulejos y esferas decorativas, además de ser especial por su gigantesco campanario. frente a ella, en el lado norte de la plaza, se encuentran los restos de la antigua muralla que en épocas medievales
protegía la medina, conservándose hoy día una de las cuatro puertas
en ella existentes, la puerta real de la villa. muy cerca, también se encuentra la fuente de fernando vi, del siglo xvii-xviii.

patio del ayuntamiento de antequera
antiguo convento de franciscanos, su hermoso patio claustral pertenece al siglo xvii, si bien el resto del edificio es posterior, todo el conjunto es de gran valor y guarda muchos atractivos dentro del rico
patrimonio artístico local. el claustro es cuadrado y cuenta con 25
metros de lado, con dos columnas toscanas que son de piedra de el
torcal. en el centro del patio se alza una bella fuente de marmol y un
ciprés. la caja de la escalera es la más monumental entre las barrocas antequeranas. está embellecida con diferentes tipos de másmoles
de colores pulimentados. en el año 1845 fue adquirido todo el edificio
conventual para ser dedicado a palacio municipal. se emprendieron entonces importantes obras de readaptación que afectaron, fundamentalmente, a la fachada y a diversas dependencias interiores. la fachada
actual, iniciada en 1953, se concibió dentro de un estilo neobarroco inspirado en modelos locales.

en el casco antiguo de la ciudad, es una placita pequeña pero de gran
sabor andaluz. a ella da uno de los laterales de la real colegiata de
santa maría la mayor, la iglesia más importante de la urbe. muy cerca
de la misma se encuentra la casa del gigante y el palacio de mondragón, además del ayuntamiento en plaza duquesa de parcent.

coronando y protegiendo la ciudad de málaga, el castillo de gibralfaro no es sólo un impresionante mirador desde el que disfrutar de
unas impresionantes vistas de toda la bahía de málaga. éste se haya
situado en la parte más alta de la colina, de 130 metros de altura, donde se encuentra también la alcazaba de málaga, unida a esta por una
doble fila de murallas rampantes. se trata de una fortaleza bien conservada con doble recinto que, en tiempos pasados, contenía aljibes
con los que poder mantener una guarnición de 5.000 hombres. cuenta
con un centro de interpretación histórica en su interior.

the “Málaga en Flamenco´07” Biennial Festival has shaped its programme around Seven Series of Concerts and Shows, each Series similarly
made up of Seven performances, making a total of 49 concerts and
shows taking place from 25 August to 30 September.
It is in this format, one of several possibilities, that the programme for
the Biennial Festival “Málaga en Flamenco ´07” has been defined. Boundaries have been set with respect to territories and areas of the genre
so that the Festival, in its entirety, has its own personality, contains
storylines, makes sense and is not just a mere succession of performances. It differs in this way from the previous festival and from those to come, having a unique, individual profile, owing to its form and
the events taking place as part of it.
“Málaga en Flamenco´07” is an artistic event of universal projection
and scope, thanks to the quality and talent of the people taking part
and of the programmes, and thanks to the singularity of many of the
exhibition spaces considered for the event. It is to be an extraordinary and even fabulous showcase, with exceptional content.
The event has been structured under the guiding principle of the
number Seven, prevailing throughout the Festival. It offers a detailed
and complete sample of the Flamenco Genre at the dawn of the XXI
century. The international recognition it has established is thriving
more than ever before and continues to rise.
To present this to the world, the city and province of Málaga will become a Priority Flamenco Performance Space, offering their natural
beauty, their passion and also their Art, as they summon depth and
creation, the bright sun of beauty, seen from the shores of the Mediterranean.

With a seating capacity of 600, the brand-new Teatro de Las Lagunas
in Mijas, officially opened in March of this year, has some of the best
facilities in the province to accommodate all kinds of shows.

Previously known as the Teatro de la Libertad, this is Málaga’s grand
theatre. The theatre was reconstructed in 1870 by Gerardo Cuervo and
the painters Muñoz Degrain and Bernardo Ferrándiz who designed the
allegorical painting of the city which can be seen on the ceiling. As a
Historic and Artistic Monument, the theatre became part of the historic
city centre. It has a seating capacity of 900, distributed between stalls
and boxes. The acoustics are outstanding and it has a wide, all-purpose stage to accommodate large-scale shows.

The Teatro Cánovas, located on the El Ejido University Campus is a
young, dynamic and modern theatre, currently the most highly regarded by its users on the Andalusian theatre network of the Consejería
de Cultura (Department of Culture) of the Junta de Andalucía (Andalusian Regional Government). With a limited capacity of 300 seats, it is
presented as an intimate space, allowing for closeness between the
performance and the spectator.

Theatre of the New Headquarters of the Provincial Council Málaga
The new headquarters of the Provincial Council is located on the Poniente Esplanade. It has one of the city’s most versatile theatres, with
a modern design by the architect Luis Machuca. This comfortable and
spacious venue has a capacity of 400 persons and is fully equipped with
facilities and infrastructures, enabling it to offer performances of
all kinds.

After resolving initial problems with the acoustics, the new Palacio de
la Paz has become the best multi-use cultural space in the White Town
for all kinds of shows, exhibitions and talks. It is situated near the
fairground site, in the area of Los Boliches, which is easily accessible
from the A7, with car parking spaces being easy to find nearby. It is three
storeys high and covers an area of 2000m2. It has a seating capacity of
approximately 700 and a stage of more than 300m2. It is also possible to
visit the Roman Thermal Baths nearby in Torreblanca del Sol.

Easy to find in this small town in the Guadalhorce Valley, at the edge
of the town centre yet very near its intricate and picturesque historical centre, the brand-new Teatro Miguel de Cervantes in Álora is
presented as a technically well fitted out, modern theatre. It has a
seating capacity of 400. A few metres away stands the monument to
the town, as the Cuna de la Malagueña (Birthplace of the Malagueña)
and a few streets away a plaque commemorates the former temporary
residence of Miguel de Cervantes, an old neighbour from whom the
theatre now takes its name.

Although it is new, the appearance of the Teatro Municipal de Marbella
is reminiscent of the Italian Classic style, with stalls, boxes and dress
circle. It is located between the districts of Albarizas and La Davina
Pastora, near the local football stadium. It has a seating capacity of
480 and its stage is suitable for small to medium-scale shows.

As part of the recreational infrastructure of the elegant city of Ronda, a popular destination for visitors, the Teatro Vicente Espinel looks
down onto the famous Tajo gorge from the Alameda. Located near
the bullring and the Parador, it is a relevantly recent theatre, constructed in 1994, although there had already previously been two theatres of the same name in the city of the Serranía. The current theatre
is active and operational, with a seating capacity of 520.

Part of the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Málaga, Málaga’s Music
College, which was opened in 1880 with the illustrious composer Eduardo Ocón at the head, the Sala Falla has provided rehearsal space and
a platform for important local musicians. Located on the El Ejido University Campus, it has a seating capacity of 520, distributed between stalls and dress circle. It was recently renovated and as a result is more
comfortable, has more space and good acoustics..

A fine, circular, stone arena that, looking down onto the Tajo gorge
of Ronda’s romantic history, has been witness to great historic bullfighting episodes of the mountain and flamenco capital of the Serranía.
It is one of the oldest bullrings in the world, dating from 1785. The interior is formed from 136 stone columns supporting 68 arches, and also
has an attractive coffered ceiling beneath an arabesque gable roof.
Its primitive neoclassical design belongs to the architect José Martín
Aldehuela, the same architect who put the bridge across the Tajo gorge. Interesting features to be discovered include the fact that it is has
one of the largest arenas of several existing in Spain, the presidential
box over the entrance for the bulls, and the beautiful stonework on
the façade.

History whirls around the eight corners of this very unique square
in Archidona, in the North-eastern region of Málaga, offering the visitor a paradigmatic example of French style architecture, cultured
and courtly, from the XVIII century, its decoration equally reminiscent
of Andalusia. A Mozarabic cave church from the X Century can also
be found in the same square, completely carved into the rock. As the
church is in a good state of conservation, the tripartite sanctuary,
cross and aisles can be admired, characteristic of this type of building.
From the XVII to the beginning of the XX century it was to become a Posada Real (Royal Inn). With its pretty clock dominating the square, today
it is worth a stroll on a sunny day at any time of the year, it provides
tranquillity and calm for the locals and is filled with colours, smells, bustling activity, bell ringing and saetas during Holy Week.

La Cueva de Nerja (Nerja Cave) is the name of one of the best kept geographical secrets of the mountains of the Eastern Costa del Sol. Discovered
by five boys from Maro in 1959, although it was inhabited in Prehistoric
times, the fabulous bowels of this National Monument are approximately 250,000 years old. Its many attractions include the Sala de Cataclismo
where the largest natural column in the world, which is 50 metres high,
can be seen. In this forest of rock and water there are also samples of
cave art to be found and for many years the Sala de Cascada has been
adapted for use as an auditorium for music and dance concerts.

Many accounts from Arabic travellers mention this magnificent fortress on the shores of the Mediterranean and the Fuengirola river.
Dominating from atop a hill 38m high, at the Western limit of Fuengirola, the particular position of the castle justifies the continual inhabitancy by Phoenicians, Punics, Romans, Muslims and Christians, although the present construction is a reference to the concept and
date of the Arabic castle. It also suffered several attacks from the
legendary Pirate Barbarossa and was silent witness both to many episodes involving smugglers, owing to its proximity to the Rock of Gibraltar, and to the Napoleonic occupation. It was a private castle at
the time of the Demortización (the sale of church lands) of Mendizábal and even barracks for the Civil Guard in the XX century. Today it is
a beautiful summer Auditorium, especially when the music delights in
harmony with this wonderful location with the long history of the
stage where it is played.

Located in the municipal district of Ardales, La Casa del Ingeniero or
Casa del Conde de Guadalhorce is beside the reservoir of the same
name. This civil engineering work was carried by Rafael Benjumea, who
was given the title of Conde de Guadalhorce (Count of Guadalhorce)
by King Alfonso XIII. With its own jetty, surrounded by the vegetation of
the Natural Park which extends through the region, this small palace
is an enviable place where tranquillity can be enjoyed in natural surroundings. Nearby are the breathtaking gorges of the Desfiladero de
los Gaitanes, where the Camino del Rey, the walkway that clings to the
cliffs of the gorges, can be found. The setting and the stately bourgeois style of this building alone make it a wonderful attraction.

The forest of rocks of El Torcal is considered to be one of the most
extraordinary geological landscapes in Europe and in 1978 it was designated as a National Park, having one of the least altered ecosystems
in the South of Europe, already formed in the Jurassic period. Covering
an area of 20km2 amongst its implausible rock formations, it is also
home to rich indigenous vegetation as well as offering the possibility of sighting griffon vultures, mountain goats, badgers, dormice and
weasels amongst the fauna.

A paradigmatic early Renaissance style construction, with late Gothic
influences, it was constructed in the first half of the XIV century, the
grandiosity of its façade adding to the richness of monuments in the
city of El Torcal. The interior is scattered with Ionic columns, dividing
it into three aisles, yet despite what might be expected, there are no ornamental features or altarpieces, for it is not a place devoted to worship but to accommodating concerts and cultural activities. Located
within the city centre, it is near many of the other monuments adorning
the ancient city of Antequera.

A megalithic construction dating back to Prehistoric times, situated
to the North East of the city of Antequera, on the outskirts. The Antequera Dolmen, older and cruder in form, and the nearby dolmens of
El Romeral and Viera are an unmistakable sign of how important and
sacred this land once was. It is a covered gallery with an almost rectangular floor, called the sepulchral chamber. It is covered entirely
with five enormous slabs, the final being the largest, some 6 m long
and 7 m wide, weighing approximately 180 tonnes. It is also oriented
towards la Peña de Los Enamorados (Lover’s Rock) which is supposed
to have been regarded as sacred. There are also enigmatic symbols carved into the stone at the entrance. It is one of the most spectacular
dolmens on the Iberian Peninsula, and probably in the whole of Europe.

With the Mediterranean Sea as a backdrop, where the two districts of
Pedregalejo and El Palo meet, both having a long fishing and flamenco history, this stage offers the salt and sand of the Málaga coast,
the shelter of its open air cafés and its song of jaberas alongside the
murmur of the most picturesque stretch of coast in the capital.

Majestic bullring attached to the historic city centre, at the heart of
the pastueño* and seigniorial district of the same name. Inaugurated
in 1876, it is the seventh bullring that the city has had. La Malagueta is
a regular polygon in shape, with 18 sides, the arena measures 52 m and
has a capacity of approximately 12,000 spectators. It was declared a
Historic Artistic Monument in 1976. The ring followed the model of La
Puerta de Alcalá in Madrid. Apart from the front row of seats, it has
two floors of tiers and boxes which are supported from the inside by
iron pillars crowned with bulls’ heads and horses intertwined with
arches of the same material and joined by a railing, also constructed
from iron. It has a bullfighting museum, which was opened in 1999.

This central square in the capital of Axarquía, birthplace of the flamenco singer Juan Breva, brings together a few jewels of local historic
heritage such as the Church of San Juan, originating from the capture
of the city by King Ferdinand the Catholic, Arabic influences in its tiles
and decorative spheres, as well as the gigantic church tower which
makes it so unique. Opposite the church on the Northern side of the
square, the remains of the old city wall can be seen, which protected
the medina in Mediaeval times and of which one of the four gates has
been preserved, la Puerta Real de la Villa. Nearby, the Fuente de Fernando VI, a fountain dedicated to Ferdinand VI, can be found, dating from
the XVII-XVIII century.

A former Franciscan convent, its fine cloistered courtyard dates from
the XVII century, even though the rest of the building was built later, the
building as awhole is an important construction and holds many attractions within the rich local artistic heritage. The cloister is square and 25m
long, with Tuscan columns made from stone from El Torcal. In the centre
of the courtyard stand a beautiful marble fountain and a cypress tree.
The staircase is the most monumental of the Barroque staircases to be
found in Antequera. It is embellished with different kinds of coloured,
polished, marble. In the year 1845 the whole convent was acquired to be
used as a Municipal Palace. Significant works were undertaken to adapt
the building, which affected, fundamentally, the façade, and various interior rooms. The current façade, on which work began in 1953, was based on a neo-baroque style, inspired by models from local architecture.

In the old part of the city, this is a small square, but with full Andalusian flavour. One of the side walls of the Real Colegiata de Santa
María La Mayor, the most important church of this large city, faces
onto the square. Close by is the Casa del Gigante and the Palacio de
Mondragón as well as the City Hall on Plaza Duquesa de Parcent.

Crowning and protecting the city of Málaga, El Castillo de Gibralfaro is not just a viewpoint from where wonderful views of the whole
Bay of Málaga can be enjoyed. It was built at the highest point on the
hill, 130 metres high, where the Alcazaba de Málaga fortress can also
be found, joined to the castle by a double rampart. The castle is well
conserved and in former times housed water cisterns which could
store enough water for a garrison of 5,000 men. Inside there is a Historic Interpretation Centre.
