Weekly Message
My beloved parishioners,
Christ the Lord is risen today! Alleluia!! We rejoice at the resurrection of our Messiah as we sing
the Alleluia, the Gloria, and ring the bells again in our liturgies. I am truly grateful to the many
ministers and volunteers who worked so hard to ensure that we all enjoy a spirit-filled liturgy during Holy Week. The mystery of our salvation has been played out in an intense way this past
week. We commemorated the Last Supper, the institution of the Eucharist, on Holy Thursday
when we also washed the feet of some parishioners, reminding us that we serve Christ in his
Body, which is each and every one of our brothers and sisters. On Good Friday, we read the passion narrative, recalling the crucifixion and death of Christ on the cross. We venerated the cross and prayed for
the intentions of the entire world. The death of Jesus on the cross is not the end. Death does not have the last
laugh. On Holy Saturday, we had the most solemn vigil of Easter. We are blessed to receive into the Catholic
Church some persons who have been preparing for the sacraments of initiations during the year. Easter Sunday
is the most important Sunday of the year, and every Sunday is meaningful for Christians because of the resurrection of the Lord. Jesus Christ triumphed over the grave, and death has no more power over him. Because he lives,
we will also live, and we can face tomorrow.
The early Christians in the Roman Empire referred to Sunday as “the Day of the Sun,” just like any other person
in the empire at the time. However, this day had a deeper meaning for the Christians. It was the day on which the
rising of the “Sun” reminded them of the glorious rising of the Son of God from the dead. The Catechism of the
Catholic Church (CCC) says: “Easter is not simply one feast among others, but the ‘Feast of feasts,’ the ‘Solemnity
of solemnities,’ just as the Eucharist is the ‘Sacrament of sacraments’ (the Great Sacrament). St. Athanasius calls
Easter ‘the Great Sunday,’ and the Eastern Churches call Holy Week ‘the Great Week.’ The mystery of the Resurrection, in which Christ crushed death, permeates with its powerful energy our old time, until all is subjected to
him” (CCC, 1169).
The resurrection is what makes Sunday the day of the Lord for Christians. Keeping this day holy is very important, and it is not to be done once or twice a year but every Sunday. If we desire to live forever in light and
love, we must share now in the new dawn of the Lord's Resurrection. Those who were really touched by the mystery of Christ’s resurrection became his witnesses. The women and the apostles went about proclaiming to everyone that Jesus had risen and that he had touched their lives. We read in our gospel today that our patron saint,
Mary Magdalene, was the first to witness the empty tomb (John 20:1). The risen Lord Jesus appeared first to
Mary Magdalene in Mark 16:9. As parishioners of St. Mary Magdalene, we are called to imitate our patron saint.
We must seek Jesus and recognize him when he appears to us. We must also be ready to spread the word that
Jesus is risen to everyone we come in contact with. As we celebrate this day of joy, let it not just end here in the
church, but let us go out to share that joy with other people. Let us be witnesses of Christ’s resurrection to people
around us.
Next Sunday is Divine Mercy Sunday. We will unveil and bless the new image of the Divine Mercy in the parish.
In addition to the regularly scheduled weekend Masses, we will also celebrate a Mass at 3:00pm on Divine Mercy
Sunday. After the 3PM Mass, we will pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and parishioners will have the opportunity to venerate the image. I am most grateful to generous parishioners who contributed for the purchase of this
new image. Everyone is invited to the 3PM Mass and a reception will follow the Mass. Let us all trust in the mercy of Jesus and also show mercy to others. Jesus, I trust in You!
HAPPY EASTER!!
—Fr. Felix

Home Again Ministry and the Year of Mercy
It seems very fitting that this new ministry has
taken off during this Year of Mercy that was
called for by Pope Francis! His wish for all of
us to be ambassadors of mercy to others was
also emphasized in our recent Lenten Mission.
Home Again provides new beginnings for families who are
forced to start over due to natural disaster or personal
crisis. In the last 7 months, we have provided 30 families
with new or gently used furniture and household items at
no cost to them. We have done this through generous
donations from our friends and parishioners. Sadly, families falling into a crisis situation is an ongoing story, and
therefore, Home Again’s need for donations is ongoing.
At this time, we accept donations by appointment only.
You can contact Carolyn Wise at (713) 898-6611, Lori
Scherr at (281) 360-9112, or Tammy Broussard at (832)
777-1878. We have a small group of parishioners helping
out so far, but we would love to have others join us! Not
only do we need household donations, but we also need
people that can donate a few hours of their time to help
distribute items as well as help pick up donations. If you
feel moved to help Home Again in any of these capacities,
please contact us!
We will be having a “Donation Day” on Saturday April 9.
Anyone with new or gently used items to donate can drop
them off here at St. Mary’s from 9 A.M.—Noon. Items can
be furniture, kitchen items, and clean linens. We will collect donations in the parking lot next to McGivney Hall.
This is a perfect way to participate meaningfully in this
Year of Mercy.
If you are interested in applying for this position, please submit a résumé and references, with a cover letter and salary
requirements, to Mike Smith, Director of Faith Formation
for Children and Youth. Email: [email protected]; no
telephone calls, please.

DIVINE MERCY MESSAGE AND DEVOTION
Divine Mercy: A Way of Life
On Good Friday 1937, Jesus requested that St.
Faustina make a special Novena before the Feast of
Mercy, from Good Friday through the following Saturday. He, Himself, dictated the intentions for each
day. He said, “I desire that during these nine days,
you bring souls to the fountain of My mercy, that
they may draw from there strength and refreshment and whatever grace they have need of in
the hardships of life, and especially at the hour
of death. On each day, you will bring to My heart
a different group of souls, and you will immerse
them in this ocean of My mercy…” (Diary,1209).
“By this Novena, I will grant every possible grace
to souls” (796).
To prepare for the Feast we must also practice the ABCs of Mercy:
Ask for His Mercy (Pray constantly, repent sins, ask for mercy for
ourselves and the world.)
Be Merciful (Let the mercy received from God flow through us to others.)
Completely Trust (The more we trust, the more graces we can receive
-no trust, no graces.)
It is not necessary for you to pray the novena in church. We invite the whole community to come and pray with us. However, if you
are unable to come, please pray the novena at home wherever it is
convenient.
**Free pamphlet on how to pray the Novena available in the back of
the Chapel**

In the Face of Suffering, Easter Invites Us To Hope
Ivana T. Meshell, Director of Adult Faith Formation
Easter is a time to renew our hope in God. If there is any time we can be hopeful, it is during
Easter, when the most hopeless situation one could imagine turns out alright! Good Friday didn’t
spoil the weekend! With Easter, we renew our belief in Jesus’s assurance that “all things are possible with
God” (Mark 10:27). What exactly is Christian hope? The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “Hope is
the theological virtue by which we desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing
our trust in Christ's promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy
Spirit. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. The Holy
Spirit . . . he poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that we might be justified by his
grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life" (CCC no. 1817).
Bernard Haring, a moral theologian, once said, “Hope is confidence inspired by love.” How does one find
hope when all hope seems gone? When we trust in God and believe in God’s love above all things, we can
renew our life as surely as Christ was raised from the dead. God did not create us to fail, and he did not create us to die; yet, Jesus himself embraced failure in his ministry. He was able to move forward and embrace
the cross, even though the situation did not look promising. God chose not to observe our suffering from a
distance, but rather to embrace us and lift us up from our pain and give us hope for a better future. If we
spend our entire lives resisting suffering, we will suffer even more. God does not promise that we will not
experience pain and failure from time to time; he did promise to love us and to be with us always. God
wants us all to live full and fulfilling lives. Hope is drawing on the power of love to reshape our lives.
Easter is a season of laughter, such as the laughter of people who rejoice in victory. With the Cross, God
wins; therefore, we all win! In a sense, we can laugh at suffering because we believe that pain does not define us as persons—love does. Suffering is not who we are; it is a temporary condition that need not be
a final statement about who we are and why we were created, as Jesus has so clearly demonstrated
by rising from the dead. In his resurrection, Jesus reveals who we truly are and that for which we were created. Life was God’s first gift to us, and life is his final gift to us. All we must do is hope in his promises and
live as though we actually believe that Easter matters, that resurrection is what we also look forward to, that
the full story of our lives have yet to be told.
If Bernard Haring is right—that love inspires us to hope—then we should be filled with hope as we celebrate
the Easter season. Jesus has given us every reason to hope because he poured out all of his love on us: “No
one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends” (John 15:13). Jesus admits the reality of suffering but also tells us not to be afraid: “In the world, you will have trouble, but take courage,
I have conquered the world” (John 16:33). St. Paul echoes Christ’s words in assuring us, “In all these
things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (Romans 8:37).
The power of hope can reshape our lives this Easter season because we, too, were baptized into Jesus’s
death, as St. Paul also reminds us, “…are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were
baptized into his death?” (Romans 6:3). As a result of our baptism, Christ has given us a share in his power
over sin, suffering and death. Christ’s power is not something that he holds only to himself—he shares his
power with you and me. If this is true, then we share in Christ’s victory. We who are sharers in his suffering
are also sharers in his glory. We are not only going to survive, we are not only going to make it; we are
going to see a day when absolutely everything turns out alright because we are more than conquerors. Why? “Because of him,” says St. Paul, “…because of him who has loved us. Therefore, if Christians
cannot be hopeful, who on earth can?
All of us face “Monday morning” types of problems in our lives. What causes you to despair from time to
time? What causes you to feel hopeless? Take courage from the promises of your baptism. Renew your
strength by “taking courage” because Christ your Savior “has overcome the world.” Remember that YOU as
a baptized Christian are a conqueror “through him who has loved us.” Hold on to your faith, then, as
one who believes in resurrection. Easter Sunday came for Jesus, and it will most assuredly come for all of us
who believe, “and that by believing, you may have life in his name” (John 20:31). Demonstrate your belief by
your daily actions and choices. Show God and others that suffering does not define you as a person—
love does.

Especialmente para nuestra Comunidad Hispana
Queridos feligreses,
¡Cristo el Señor resucitó hoy! ¡Aleluya!

aunque no entendían plenamente.
