barco de expedición en un viaje que sorprende con abundante

l subirse al avión el corazón se acelera. No
de temor, pues sabemos que el vuelo es
tranquilo, pero de emoción. Para la mayoría
presente es el sueño de una vida, los primeros pasos antárticos, para otros se ha convertido en un
fanatismo. “¿Por qué volvería todos los años? Porque
este lugar nunca deja de sorprender”, comenta un brasileño, que ya ha realizado 12 viajes al continente blanco.
La empresa chilena Antarctica XXI comenzó a operar hace un par de años como una alternativa novedosa
frente a la oferta convencional de cruceros, siendo los
únicos en combinar avión con barco de expedición.
Es decir, cambian los cinco días (entre ida y vuelta)
de navegación por el tormentoso mar de Drake, por un
tranquilo vuelo de dos horas desde Punta Arenas hasta
la Base Aérea chilena Frei en la Isla Rey Jorge, donde
uno se embarca en la aventura Antártica. La idea ha
tenido tanto éxito que este año aumentaron al doble la
cantidad de viajes, comenzando la temporada en noviembre y terminando en marzo.
Our hearts sped up upon boarding the plane -not from
fear, as we know this is a calm flight, but from emotion. For
most of us present it is the dream of our lives, the first steps
onto Antarctica for some, and a fanatic’s return for others.
“Why would I come back every year? Because this place
is an unending surprise,” comments a Brazilian who has
already traveled there twelve times.
The Chilean company Antarctica XXI began operating
a couple of years ago with an alternative that is innovative
in comparison to the traditional cruise, being the only ones
to combine airplane and expedition ship. That is, they
exchange the five days (in going and returning) navigating
the turbulent waters of the Drake Passage, for a calm, twohour flight from Punta Arenas to the Chilean Frei Airbase
on Rey Jorge Island, where one embarks on the Antarctic
adventure. The idea has been so successful that this year
they doubled the number of trips, starting in the month of
November and ending in March.

Aterrizamos en el aeródromo chileno, en la isla Rey Jorge,
que concentra la mayor cantidad de bases, y la única población civil, en la Villa Las Estrellas. Apenas alcanzamos a recorrer unos minutos, el viento de 70 km/h sigue
aumentando y debemos trasladarnos en botes zodiac
para subir al Ocean Nova, que será nuestra casa por los
próximos seis días.
Esto no es un crucero convencional con piscina, spa
y salas de cine, donde uno se dedica a tomar sol. Es una
embarcación con capacidad para 68 pasajeros, sin lujos
excesivos, que fue construida especialmente para navegar en mares donde abunda el hielo. En los cruceros de
expedición el concepto clave no es el descanso, sino que
la exploración, así es que los días se aprovechan con de
dos a cuatro desembarcos que pueden partir a las 6 am.
No hay televisión en las habitaciones, por lo que el tiempo libre se llena de tranquilidad, charlas, documentales,
lectura antártica, y buenas conversaciones en el bar.
Bordeando la península
Los cruceros rodean la península antártica que concentra la mayor cantidad de fauna e icebergs. A medida que
uno avanza hacia el sur, el paisaje se vuelve más espectacular, rodeado de montañas y planicies cubiertas de
blanco, similar a un enorme paraíso amerengado. En
el mar se divisan grandes colas de ballenas y flotan las
masas congeladas, todas compiten por demostrar los
colores y formas más perfectas, y la mayor cantidad de
pingüinos y focas.
La noción del tiempo se pierde. A esta latitud (alcanzamos los 65°), durante el verano, la oscuridad de la
noche no llega, y el cielo se tiñe de rojo y se vuelve penumbra apenas un rato. Horas y horas de luz perfecta amenazan con copar las tarjetas de memoria de la cámara.
La temperatura fluctúa desde alrededor de los 0°C, pero la sensación térmica puede bajar bastante
por el viento. En los desembarcos se recomienda vestirse en varias capas de ropa abrigada y liviana
con una chaqueta y pantalones cortavientos como capa exterior. Es indispensable usar gorro, guantes, lentes de sol y bloqueador solar. La empresa proporciona botas de goma térmicas.
Recomendable llevar un notebook para descargar fotos.
The temperatures fluctuate around 0°C (32°F), but the real feel can drop a great deal because of the
wind. For the landings, it is recommended that one dress in several layers of warm and light-weight
clothes, with a wind-breaking jacket and pants as the outer layer. A hat, gloves, sunglasses, and sun
block are a must. The company provides rubber thermal boots.
It is a good idea to take a laptop to download photos.

We landed in the Chilean aerodrome on Rey Jorge Island,
which has the largest number of bases and the only civilian
population in Villa Las Estrellas. We barely got to wander
around for a few minutes, and the 70 km/h (44 m/hr)
winds kept speeding up and forced us to take Zodiac boats
in order to board the Ocean Nova, our home for the coming
six days.
This is not the conventional cruise with a pool, spa
and movie theaters, where one spends the hours baking
in the sun. It is a vessel with a capacity for 68 passengers,
without excessive luxuries and built especially to navigate
in waters where ice abounds. Key to these expedition
cruises is not rest, but exploration, so the days are filled
with two to four landings that may begin at 6 a.m. There
are no televisions in the rooms, making free time full of
quiet and calm, talks, reading about the Antarctic and
good conversations at the bar.
Bordering the Peninsula
The cruises navigate around the Antarctic peninsula
that boasts the highest concentration of fauna and
icebergs. As progress to the south is made, the landscape
becomes more and more spectacular, surrounded by
mountains and plains covered in white, something
like an enormous meringue paradise. In the ocean one
can sight the large whale tails and a vast number
of penguins and seals. Frozen masses float in the
waters, all competing to show off the most perfect
colors and shapes.
And the notion of time is lost. At that latitude (we
have reached 65°), during the summer, the darkness
of the night never comes, and the sky is tinged in red
and gloom for barely a little while. Hours and hours of
perfect light threaten to fill the camera’s memory card.

Tenemos suerte y las jornadas transcurren con sol, con
varios desembarcos en el día, caminando sin prisa por
la nieve o navegando en zodiac para estar más cerca del
hielo flotante, y de las ballenas. Vemos a cientos de ellas,
y basta creer que uno ya lo ha visto todo cuando la Antártica vuelve a sorprender.
Por parlantes anuncian que nos rodean los cetáceos
y que saldremos a fotografiarlos. La cacería por la mejor
imagen comienza de lejos, y pronto vemos a las ballenas
acercarse al vulnerable zodiac, emocionándonos con su
tamaño de -a lo menos- 16 metros de largo y 40 toneladas. Si una quisiera darnos vuelta lo haría sin esfuerzo,
pero no son seres agresivos y no se conoce un accidente
así. Incluso el guía nos cuenta que una vez una ballena
posó su cabeza en la proa, y cuando ésta comenzó a hundirse por el peso, el animal retrocedió. Se nos escapan
risas nerviosas.
Dos siguen acercándose, se hunden mostrando sus
colas y luego se pierden por un largo rato. De pronto, un
estruendo resopla por detrás y una enorme cabeza emerge a centímetros. Está tan cerca que podríamos tocarla
con solo extender la mano, pero no podemos intervenir
y el sentimiento entre los pasajeros es unánime: ojalá
este paraíso siga existiendo tal y como está. Tierra de
nadie y de todos, sin fronteras, sin industrias, sin contaminación y sin humanos. Manda la naturaleza.

We are lucky and the days go by in the sunlight, with several
landings a day, walking through the snow in no hurry, or
navigating on Zodiacs to come up close to the floating ice and
the whales. We see hundreds of them, and it is easy to believe
that one has seen it all, when the Antarctic surprises again.
The voice from the speakers announces that we are
surrounded by cetaceans and that we will head out to shoot
photos of them. The hunt for the best pictures already begins
from afar, and soon we see the whales come closer to the
vulnerable Zodiac, thrilling us with their 16 meter (52 ft) length
and their 40 tons. One could turn us over without effort, but
they are not aggressive creatures and no accident of this sort is
known. The guide even tells us that once a whale rested its head
on the boats bow, and when it began to sink from the animal’s
weight, the whale retreated. Nervous giggles escape us.
Two continue to approach us, then sink themselves, showing
their tails and then get lost for a long while. Suddenly, a thunderlike blow is heard from behind and a huge head emerges just
inches away. They are so close that we could touch them just
by reaching out with our hands, but we cannot intervene and
the feeling among passengers is unanimous: hopefully this
paradise will continue to exist exactly as it is. No-man’s-land
and everyone’s-land, there are no borders, no industries, no
pollution, and no humans. Nature rules.
