ahead for this school year.
Great schools have dedicated parents and guardians who continually work to make a

Dear Amazing Mooberry Families,
Welcome Back! We are counting down the days until our fabulous students come streaming through the
doors. I am thrilled to start my first year as principal of such a great school. I want to take this opportunity to
introduce myself. My 12-year teaching career includes middle and high school experience in the United
States, Bulgaria, and Hong Kong. For the past three years, I have served right here in the community as the
Assistant Principal of Hillsboro High School. My wife and I are the proud parents of three daughters who will
be in kindergarten through grade 3 next year, and I know firsthand the trust that parents place in their schools
to make sure that their children are learning, safe, and have a positive sense of self. From the conversations I
have had with the Mooberry staff, I know that your children are in the right place. Our staff is dedicated,
caring, and enthusiastic. We will hold all students to high expectations and give them the support and
positivity that they need to be successful. It is my hope that we can work together to create a safe and
respectful school environment where all students can achieve to their greatest potential!
Here are a few reminders:
Back to School Night: Please join us on August 31 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. This is a chance for you to find out
in which classroom your child is placed, meet the teacher, tour the classroom and learn about curriculum,
expectations and other important information, and enjoy refreshments. PLEASE BRING IN YOUR SUPPLIES to
be put away!
First Day of School for grades 1-6: Tuesday, September 6
First Day for Kindergarten students: Thursday, September 8
Attendance Line: If your child is absent please call 503-844-1643 as soon as possible. If you do not call the
attendance line before 9:00 a.m., you will receive an automated call from our office.
School Hours: Our school hours are from 7:45 a.m. to 2:05 p.m. On Wednesdays we have early dismissal at
1:35 p.m. We do not have supervision prior to 7:15 a.m. Please do not drop your child off before then.
School Meals: At Mooberry, ALL students are provided with a healthy, free breakfast and free lunch. You do
not need to complete a Nutrition Services application unless you have students attending other schools.
Breakfast: Once again, ALL students will be able to eat a free breakfast this year. Students will be able to eat
breakfast from 7:15-7:45 a.m. in the gym.
School Office Hours: 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.—Our office opens for the year on August 18.

Quiero aprovechar esta oportunidad para presentarme. Mi carrera educativa de 12 años incluye experiencia

Information Packets: During our Back to School Night on Wednesday, August 31, you will be receiving a
packet with important information and permission forms. Please return the permission forms to school
by Friday, Sept. 9.
Medications: All medications must be brought to school in their original containers by a parent or
guardian. Parents must fill out a medication authorization form before medication can be distributed at
school.
Parking Lot Safety: At the end of the school day the parking lot is for buses only. Parents may park in the
lot if they have business in the school, but all parent pick-ups are on the sidewalk on Tenth Avenue.
Students may be dropped off in the morning along the building—just in front of the bus drop off zone.
Parent Involvement: Parents are always welcome at Mooberry. We encourage you to become involved in
your child’s education. Prior to volunteering, all parents must complete a volunteer application form which
includes a background check. These forms are available on the district website under the Community tab.

• We need your current information in our Synergy student information system (accessible to parents
through ParentVUE) to ensure we can reach you in the event of an emergency.
• Please log on to your ParentVUE account and review your information to see if we have your correct address,
phone numbers, and e-mail address (your school can provide you with ParentVUE registration information).
• The number you indicate as your PRIMARY contact phone number is the one that will be called by our autodialer system for announcements, emergency messages or when your child is absent.

• Photos, Website, Media, etc. We love to showcase the great things our students are doing by displaying photos
and write-ups on our District website and social media pages. We do understand, however, that there are situations in which a parent might not want their child’s photo taken. Please know that our STANDARD PROCESS
IS TO ALLOW PHOTOS. If you are ok with this, no action is necessary. If you want to opt your child out of
photos, please fill out a Release of Information Opt Out Form, available on our website under Parents/Back-ToSchool Information or from your school’s office, and return it to your school’s office for entry into Synergy.

SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION
The first days of school for students

10-12 (Note: this and all Wednesdays,
except for the final Wednesday of the
school year, will be Academic Seminar
days, meaning elementary students
end their day 30 minutes earlier than
normal so staff can collaborate in Professional Learning Communities.)
• Thursday, Sept. 8—Kindergarten
Parents can access bus routing and
scheduling information, determine
walk zones, and more using the online myBus system. Please refer to the
insert in this packet for instructions
on how to access the system. You will
not receive bus route or walker status
notification by mail. If you have questions, please contact the Transportation Department at 503-844-1123.
School is projected to conclude on Friday, June 16, 2017. However, in case
inclement weather requires the District
to close schools during the 2016-17
school year, days may be added to the
school calendar as make-up days. Any
changes to the school calendar will be
announced through the District website, newsletters, and the news media.

The school-based health center at
Century High School is available for
use by any student in the Hillsboro
School District. The center is run by
Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center and provides urgent care, physical
exams, sports physicals, immunizations, mental health therapy, dental
screenings, and more. Contact them

DENTAL SCREENING REQUIREMENTS
State law now requires a child who
is 7 years of age or younger to have a
dental screening before entering school
for the first time. Parents of incoming
kindergartners will either need to acknowledge that their child has been
screened, request an opt-out from
the requirement, or have their child

Hillsboro School District Transportation Department presents its
new online application—myBus!
Parents and guardians can now determine if their student is
in a designated walk zone or on a bus route using the myBus
website. If your student takes the bus, you can retrieve routes,
schedules, pickup or dropoff stops, and other information.
Simply use your student’s school ID and birthdate to log in to the website!
Access to myBus will begin August 20. At the beginning of the school year, as
Transportation finalizes bus routes, changes will be automatically posted—be
sure to check myBus regularly! myBus also will be updated as students change
enrollment or are approved for alternate transportation. myBus is a quick and
easy way to check your student’s bus information at any time.
Check out myBus by scanning the QR code with your smartphone or by
visiting the website. If you don’t have internet access or need further
information, Transportation staff will continue to be available to assist you.

2016-17 Annual Notice for Statewide Tests
ALL STUDENTS GRADUATE PREPARED
In 2010, Oregon adopted higher K-12 standards in English Language
Arts and Math to ensure all students move from grade to grade with
the academic knowledge and skills necessary for success beyond
high school. Because we raised the bar for what we expect students
to know and be able to do, we have also changed the way we
measure student progress through our state tests, known as Smarter
Balanced.
Why does participation matter?
While no single test can give a complete picture of your child’s
progress, having your child take the statewide tests provides
educators and administrators with information about what
educational approaches are working and where additional
resources are needed. Your child’s participation is important to
ensure schools and districts receive the targeted resources they
need to help all students succeed.
Description of rights
House Bill 2655 permits parents and adult students to annually optout of Oregon’s statewide summative tests in English Language Arts
and Math by submitting an annual form to the school the student
attends. Schools will provide parents with the annual form for 201617 at least 30 days prior to the start of testing. Visit this link to learn

La búsqueda de resguardo (shelter) se establece cuando es necesario
proteger a las personas.
