“Happy Fathers Day”
Dear Friends,
Happy Fathers Day to all of the fathers and
father figures in our parish. As we celebrate
fathers, I thank God for the love and example of
generosity of my own father. It’s hard to believe
he’s been gone nearly four years. I thought of
him much this week as we celebrated the funeral
of his former partner in medical practice. Dr.
Ryan’s obituary mentioned the more than 8500
babies delivered by RPW Obstetrics before the turn of the century.
I’m proud of and grateful for my dad’s dedication to his vocation.
It makes me happy when I run into someone who says, “Your dad
delivered me.” It just happened last week.
My dad’s vocation, though, was first and foremost to his family. He
loved his family, provided generously for his family, emphasized the
importance of education, and left a legacy for his family. Too often,
I think we take our fathers for granted. Although gratitude to our
fathers should be shown throughout the year, today gives us the
opportunity to thank God for them and for those who have been
father figures to us - and if we are blessed enough to still have them
around, to thank them.
Jesus asks his disciples in today’s Gospel, “Who do you say that I
am?” In the midst of all that is happening in the world and in our
nation, especially in light of the tragedy in Orlando last weekend,
we all must answer that question and allow our answers to define
who we are and what we do. Who do you say that Jesus is? If he is
for us the Christ of God, as Peter confesses, then we need to allow
the Anointed One to show us the way.
Today’s opening prayer both confesses and reminds. We prayed
“You never deprive of your guidance those you set firm on the
foundation of your love.” God sent the Christ of God to set us firm
on the foundation of God’s love and to guide us by showing us the
way to live, the way to relate to one another and to the Father. I ask
again, who is Jesus to you? Do you allow his way of life, his care for
the outcast, his love of the sinner, his option for the poor, to guide
you? The rhetoric of this post massacre week tells me that we need
to be a lot more proactive in our following the guidance of the
Prince of Peace.
Two things come to mind. First we need to work to end the
proliferation of military weapons ending up in the hands of civilian
people. I can’t think of any good reason anyone besides military
personnel should be bearing the type of gun used in Orlando last
week. We need laws that keep all people safe.
Secondly, as Archbishop Cupich noted this week, we need to attend
better to people who live with mental illnesses. On Sunday he
sent a note to the worshippers at the Archdiocesan Gay and Lesbian
Outreach Mass. In it he said,
“May Jesus, who called the persecuted blessed, unite us so that
hatred and intolerance are not allowed to flourish, so that those who
suffer mental illness know the support of a compassionate society,
so that we find the courage to face forthrightly the falsehood that
weapons of combat belong anywhere in the civilian population.”
Work and Prayer. Let’s allow the Christ of God to lead us.
Next weekend we will bid farewell to Jean Tuohy. I am grateful
for her service to our parish over the last several years. With
parish personnel changes and with a desire to be more fiscally and
pastorally responsible, we have combined the roles of Director
of Liturgy and Director of Music, a full time position with many
administrative responsibilities, resulting in the elimination of the
role of Music Director. Jean has secured a new job as Organist and
Music Director at a church in the Northwest suburbs. I do thank
Jean and wish her well.
We posted the position, and interviewed all the candidates that
applied. Recently the committee suggested that Scott Arkenberg
join our team. He will begin July 1. He will teach music in the
school, direct the Spanish, English and youth choirs, and coordinate
the liturgies in the parish.The committee suggested that this is a lot
of work. Scott assures us that with participation and the help of
many, we will sing joyful songs to the Lord.

huge success, especially Joe D’Arco and Ken Ciukowski.

THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A CATHOLIC?
Consider joining our RCIA program.The Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is for anyone 18 and older
who would like to learn more about the Catholic faith
and for those who seek to be baptized, receive First Holy
Communion and be confirmed in the Catholic Church.
The RCIA can also help you complete the necessary
steps to become a member of the Catholic Church if you
were baptized in another Christian denomination. RCIA
meets on Thursday evenings, three times per month from
September to April. If you are interested in learning
more, if you know of anyone who might be a candidate
for this journey, or if you are willing to help as a catechist
or sponsor, please contact Shelagh Donoghue in the parish

“Feliz Dia de Los Padres”
Queridos Amigos,
Dos cosas vienen a la mente. En primer lugar tenemos que trabajar
para poner fin a la proliferación de las armas militares que acaban en
manos de personas civiles. No puedo pensar en ninguna buena razón
que cualquier persona además del personal militar deba tener ese tipo
de arma utilizada en Orlando la semana pasada. Necesitamos leyes que
protejan a todas las personas.
Feliz Día de los Padres a todos los padres y a
todas las figuras paternas en nuestra parroquia. Al
celebrar a los padres, doy gracias a Dios por el amor
y el ejemplo de generosidad de mi propio padre. Es
difícil creer que haya fallecido hace casi cuatro años.
Pensé mucho en él esta semana, ya que celebramos
el funeral de su ex compañero en la práctica
médica. El obituario del Dr. Ryan mencionó a más
de los 8500 bebés nacidos por RPW Obstetricia antes del cambio de
siglo. Estoy orgulloso y agradecido por la dedicación de mi padre a su
vocación. Me hace feliz cuando me encuentro con alguien que me dice:
“Tu padre me recibió al nacer.” Eso pasó la semana pasada.
En segundo lugar, como el Arzobispo Cupich señaló esta semana,
tenemos que atender mejor a las personas que viven con enfermedades
mentales. El domingo envió una nota a los fieles en la Misa Arquidiocesana
de Auxilio a Gay y Lesbianas. En ella, dijo, “Que Jesús, quien llamaba
a los perseguidos benditos, nos una para que el odio y la intolerancia
no florezcan, y que las personas que sufren de enfermedades mentales
sepan del apoyo de una sociedad compasiva, para que encontremos el
valor de enfrentar francamente la falsedad que las armas de combate
ofrecen a la población.”
La vocación de mi padre, sin embargo, fue indudablemente su familia.
Amaba a su familia, siempre proveyó generosamente por su familia,
destacando la importancia de la educación, y dejó un legado a su familia.
Creo que tomamos a nuestros padres con ventaja. Aunque debemos
demostrar agradecimiento a nuestros padres durante todo el año, hoy
se nos da la oportunidad para agradecer a Dios por ellos y por quienes
han sido figuras paternas con nosotros - y si estamos lo suficientemente
bendecidos de tenerlos aun en nuestro alrededor, debemos darles las
gracias.
Trabajo y Oración. Permitamos que el Cristo de Dios nos guíe.
La próxima semana le diremos adiós a Jean Tuohy. Estoy agradecido por
su servicio a nuestra parroquia en los últimos años. Con los cambios
de personal de la parroquia y con el deseo de ser más fiscalmente
y pastoralmente responsable, hemos combinado las funciones de
Director de Liturgia y Director de Música, una posición a tiempo
completo con muchas responsabilidades administrativas, lo que resulta
en la eliminación de la función de director musical. Jean ha conseguido
un nuevo trabajo como organista y directora musical en una iglesia en
los suburbios del noroeste. Doy gracias a Jean y le deseo lo mejor.
Jesús pregunta a sus discípulos en el Evangelio de hoy, “¿quién dicen
que soy yo?” En medio de todo lo que está pasando en el mundo y en
nuestro país, especialmente a la luz de la tragedia en Orlando el pasado
fin de semana, todos debemos responder a esa pregunta y permitir que
nuestras respuestas definan lo que somos y lo que hacemos. ¿Quién es
Jesús? Si él es para nosotros el Cristo de Dios, como Pedro confiesa,
entonces tenemos que permitir que El Elegido nos muestre el camino.
Hemos anunciado la posición, y entrevistamos a todos los candidatos
que aplicaron. Recientemente, el comité sugirió que Scott Arkenberg
se uniera a nuestro equipo. Él comenzará el 1ro. de julio. Enseñará
música en la escuela, dirigirá coros juveniles en ingles y español, y
coordinará las liturgias en la parroquia. El comité comentó que esto es
suficiente trabajo. Scott nos asegura que con la participación y la ayuda
de muchos, vamos a cantar canciones alegres al Señor.
La oración de apertura de hoy ambos confiesa y recuerda. Oramos
“Nunca dejas de tu mano a quienes has hecho arraigar en tu amistad,
concédenos vivir siempre movidos por tu amor.” Dios envió el Cristo
de Dios, para que nos afirme en el fundamento del amor de Dios y
que nos guíe mostrándonos la manera de vivir, la manera en que nos
relacionamos entre sí y con el Padre. Vuelvo a preguntar: ¿Quién es
Jesús para ustedes? ¿Permiten que su forma de vida, su cuidado por
los marginados, su amor por los pecadores, su opción por los pobres,
puedan guiarlos? La retórica de esta semana después de la matanza me
dice que tenemos que ser mucho más proactivos siguiendo la dirección
del Príncipe de la Paz.

Doy las gracias a todos los que han hecho de Verano en la Cuadra otro
gran éxito, especialmente Joe D’Arco y Ken Ciukowski.

El año escolar termino o casi termina, pero eso no significa
que no puede mantenerse en contacto con el Grupo de
Jóvenes de San Juan Berchmans durante el verano. Todos
están invitados entre las edades de 13 y 18 a venir a
visitarnos el domingo 26 de junio, de 4: 30-6: 30 pm en el
gimnasio del edificio escolar de Altgeld.

No podemos ser “hacedores de la palabra” sin los
incansables esfuerzos de innumerables voluntarios que
generosamente dan de su tiempo y talento durante todo
el año. De los que sirven semanalmente en los ministerios
litúrgicos, a nuestro Concilio Pastoral, nuestros
catequistas de Educación Religiosa, nuestros miembros
del coro y músicos, nuestros Comités de la Junta Escolar
y de Recaudación de Fondos, nuestros Ministros de
Atención, nuestros Ministros de HOPE, nuestra RICA,

UN AÑO DE MISERICORDIA
OBSERVAR
El primer requisito para llevar una
vida misericordiosa es percatarnos
de
aquellos
que
necesitan
misericordia, bondad y perdón. Si
nos distraemos o pensamos solo en
nosotros, nunca los veremos.Y nunca
seremos misericordiosos. El primer
paso es observar. Había un hombre
rico, que vestía de púrpura y lino y todos
los días hacía espléndidos banquetes.
Echado a la puerta del rico había un
pobre cubierto de llagas llamado Lázaro
(Lucas 16:19–20).
¿PENSANDO EN CONVERTIRSE EN CATÓLICO?
Para todos aquellos que fueron voluntarios con su
tiempo, trabajaron en el comité, donaron comidas,
bebidas, dinero en efectivo, compraron boletos de
rifa o simplemente asistieron el sábado!
Considere unirse a nuestro programa de RICA. El
Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos (RICA) es para
cualquier persona de 18 años o más que le gustaría
aprender más acerca de la fe católica y para aquellos que
desean ser bautizados, recibir la Primera Comunión y ser
confirmados en la Iglesia Católica. RICA también puede
ayudar a completar los pasos necesarios para convertirse
en un miembro de la Iglesia Católica, si usted fue bautizado
en otra denominación cristiana. RICA se reúne el jueves
por la noche, tres veces al mes desde septiembre hasta
abril. Si usted está interesado en aprender más, si conoce

Religious Education Program
June 5, 2016
Register for the 2016-2017 school year BEFORE July 1 and
there is no registration fee. After July 1, a $20 registration fee
will be in effect. Registration forms are available on the parish
website (www.stjohnberchmans.org) or in the Rectory Office.
Students who attended the PreCommunion or PreConfirmation classes this year must register again for the coming year so
they will be able to make First Holy Communion or Confirmation in 2017.
Classes for the 2016-2017 school year begin Saturday, Sept. 10.
Our dedicated and faith-filled volunteer catechists welcome
additional teachers on their team. The Religious Education
program meets from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on most Saturdays from
September through April. Please consider being a substitute
catechist if a weekly commitment is too much at this time.
