Les Anciens nous le disent: jamais dans l'histoire de la Confrérie on s'est précipité sur les inscriptions à un Zaf mondial
comme ces dernières semaines
sur FRANCE 2014 !
Les précédentes éditions accueillaient normalement autour de 300
Frères et captives et nous pensions qu'avec 450 participants
répartis en 3 bateaux pour la durée des 6 jours, avec une possibilité de porter ce nombre à 700
pour la soirée finale dans le port
de Honfleur, nous étions à l'abri
de toute surprise.
Cependant, il apparaît que le programme proposé séduit tellement
que nous avons même reçu la
demande d'une confrérie qui souhaitait venir avec une délégation
de 200 personnes!
J'en appelle donc à votre bon
sens de marin: ajouter un bateau
poserait un problème de navigation en flotte quasi impossible à
résoudre. Nous sommes en effet
sur un fleuve, ne l'oubliez pas,
avec des infrastructures portuaires limitées, des écluses... Et
puis, ajouter un navire serait un
risque financier qui ne serait
guère raisonnable pour une sim-
ple confrérie. Et enfin, il y a tout
simplement les limites qui nous
sont imposées par la capacité des
salles dont nous avons besoin à
terre, à l'Hôtel de Ville de Paris
comme au Moulin Rouge…
L’équipe de Frères en charge de
l’organisation est à la fois heureuse du succès de ce programme
qui vous est proposé, mais bien
triste de ne pouvoir répondre
favorablement à toutes les demandes créant sans doute des
frustrations.
Aussi, lorsque la réservation de
toutes les cabines des 3 bateaux
sera complète, nous ouvrirons
une liste d’attente et vous proposerons des solutions. Mais
pour l'instant il y a encore de la
place!
Je vous demande de croire à notre volonté de tout mettre en œuvre pour vous recevoir tous et
pour que vous gardiez de la
France le meilleur souvenir.

Mi appello al vostro senso di
marinai: aggiungere una nave
sarebbe un problema di
navigazione di flotta quasi
impossibile da risolvere. Siamo
infatti su di un fiume, non
dimentichiamolo, con limitate
strutture portuali, le chiuse ... E
poi aggiungere una nave sarebbe
un rischio finanziario
irragionevole per una singola
Fratellanza. E, infine, ci sono
semplicemente dei limiti che ci

sono imposti dalla capienza delle
sale di cui abbiamo bisogno a
terra presso l'Hotel de Ville di
Parigi, come al Moulin Rouge ..
La squadra di Fratelli
responsabile dell’ organizzazione
è sia felice per il successo di
questo programma che vi è stato
offerto, ma anche molto triste per
non poter rispondere
positivamente a tutte le richieste
creando senza dubbio della
frustrazione.
Inoltre, al momento in cui si
sarà completata la prenotazione
di tutte le cabine delle tre navi,
si aprirà una lista di attesa e vi
proporremo delle soluzioni. Ma
per ora c'è ancora posto!
Vi chiedo di credere nel nostro
impegno a fare ogni sforzo per
accogliere tutti voi in modo che
conserviate il miglior ricordo
della Francia.

Los antiguos nos dicen: nunca en
la historia de la Hermandad las
inscripciones a un Zaf. Mundial,
se anticiparon tanto como lo
ocurrido en estas últimas
semanas para FRANCIA 2014!
En ediciones anteriores, se
habían recibido normalmente
inscripciones de alrededor de 300
participantes, entre Hermanos y
Cautivas y por ello pensamos que
con 450 participantes durante 6
días, divididos en tres barcos, con
la posibilidad de aumentar este
número a 700 para la última
noche en el puerto de Honfleur,
estábamos a salvo de cualquier
sorpresa.
Sin embargo, parece que el
programa propuesto atrajo tanto,
que incluso una hermandad nos
envió una solicitud indicando que
quería venir con una delegación
de 200 personas!
Apelo a su sentido de buen
marino: Añadir un barco sería un
problema casi imposible de
resolver al navegar como flota.
De hecho, estamos en un río, no
lo olvidemos, con limitadas
instalaciones portuarias,
esclusas... Y si a continuación,
agregamos un barco, sería un
riesgo financiero, que no sería
razonable que asumiera una sola
hermandad. Y por último,
simplemente hay límites que son
impuestos por la capacidad de las
salas que tenemos que ocupar en
el Hotel de Ville de París, como
el Moulin Rouge…
El equipo de Hermanos a cargo
de la organización, está por su
parte, feliz por el éxito de este
programa que se ofrece, pero
triste por no poder responder a
todas las solicitudes, que sin
duda crean frustración.
Además, un vez que las
reservas de todas las cabinas de
los 3 barcos, estén completas, se
abrirá una lista de espera y le
ofreceremos soluciones. Pero
por ahora todavía hay espacio!
Les pido que crean en nuestro
compromiso de hacer todo lo
posible para dar cabida a todos
ustedes y para que ustedes
guarden de Francia el mejor
recuerdo.

My brothers!
The elders tell us: never in the
history of the Brotherhood did we
witness such a rush to enroll in a
World Zaf as we did during the
last few weeks on FRANCE
2014!
Previous World Zafs attracted
around 300 Brothers and
Captives and we thought that
with 450 participants divided
into three boats for the duration
of 6 days, with a possibility to
increase this number to 700 for
the final evening in the Port of
Honfleur, we were protected
from any surprise.
However, it appears that the
proposed program generated
such interest that we even
received the request by a
brotherhood who wanted to come
with a delegation of 200 people!
I appeal therefore to your good
sense as a mariner: adding a
boat poses a problem of
navigation almost impossible to
solve. We are indeed on a river,
do not forget, with limited port
facilities and locks. So to add a
ship represents a very high
financial risk for a single
brotherhood. And finally, there
are simply limits that are
imposed by the capacity of the
rooms we need on land at the
Hotel de Ville in Paris and the
Moulin Rouge ...
The team of Brothers in charge
of the organization is both happy
for the success of the program
offered, but sad not to be able to
respond positively to all requests,
creating there is no doubt
frustration.
Also, once booking of all cabins
on all three boats is complete,
we will open a waiting list and
offer you a solution. But for now
there is still room!
I ask you to believe in our
commitment to make every effort
to accommodate all of you and
for you to leave France with the
best memories.
I will keep you informed.

Comme d’habitude chez les Frères de Belgique, les fameux numéros des tables étaient au rendez-vous et ceci à la plus grande
joie des Frères & Captives présents.
En partant plusieurs se sont promis de remettre cela l’année prochaine.

Ce 16 mars 2013 a eu lieu notre
Grand Boucan National. La table
de Gand, organisatrice de l’événement avait pu réserver la salle du
Pand dans les prestigieux bâtiments du béguinage de Gand.
Ce « Grand Boucan National » fut
un réel succès, il a été rehaussé
par la venue de Frères & Captives
de France, de Grande Bretagne,
des Pays-Bas, de Suisse et d’Allemagne.
IRELAND
As the Summer moves on the
Fréres in Ireland are taking to the
water. The South-Eastern Table
will bring their fleet to Baltimore
in late June to re-enact the
sacking of that Town on 20th June
1631 by Algerine Pirates.
Meanwhile, the Northern Table
will assemble on Inis Boffin on
20th June to commemorate the
sacking of that Island'sMonastery
by the Norsemen in 1793 A.D.
Both these boucans demonstrate
that the Fréres de la Côte in
Ireland are as vigorous as ever
and devoted to their purpose.
Notre Frère « Champagne » 90
ans, seul survivant de nos 7 Frères
Fondateurs, était de la partie. Il a
été chaleureusement applaudi.
Le lendemain une visite guidée de
la ville de Gand organisé par notre Frère « Chef Machine » a
comblé les participants.

preparations have been made to
establish a Table on the East
Coast based in Dun Laoire. This
Table will be inaugurated in the
National Yacht Club in Dun
Laoire on Friday 18th October.

amenity for the enjoyment of a
few small boats, nature lovers,
fishermen and walkers.

In 1828 the famous English artist
QUESTION and ANSWER
Q: Apart from eating and drinking,
what do British Freres do on a
cold winter evening?
A: Charter a warm "narrow boat"
and cruise leisurely through the
gentle Sussex countryside, along
the sheltered waters of the Chichester Canal.
Departing from Chichester basin,
this is exactly what the Solent
Freres and their Captives did, very
enjoyably, one chilly April evening this year.
At one time this canal linked the
south coast of England, through
various links, to London and the
industrial Midlands. It has long
since ceased to be of industrial
value and had fallen into serious

Canal", which is part of the Turner
Collection on permanent exhibition at the Tate Gallery in London.
It depicts what is probably a collier brigantine of the period, looking across the serene landscape
towards Chichester Cathedral.
Our narrow boat moored up at this
location so that we were able to
walk a short distance to savour
this country landscape. Turner
must have had better weather at
the time he was painting this
scene. His colours are richer, and
his sunset more dramatic than
those in this photograph, but the
tranquility even in the poor light,
was undeniable.
Returning to the Chichester basin,
the Brothers enjoyed a modest
meal and some good companionship in a nearby restaurant

As part of the Worldwide Brotherhood of the Coast, Freres de la
Cote(GB) is not a fund raising
organisation for charities. One
notable exception is our regular
support for the Royal National
Lifeboat Institution through a
"small change" collection at our
regular dinner meetings.
The RNLI is entirely financially
dependant upon voluntary donations. Our continued support in a
small way is considered to be entirely appropriate and compatible
with the nature of our organisation.
Freres de la Cote(GB) made one
other donation, which was also
considered to be entirely appropriate. This was to assist the establishment of the National Sailing
Academy in Portland Harbour in
2004.
Through the local influence of our
Dorset Table, acknowledgement
of the Freres' donation took the
form of a flagstone in the floor of
the entrance hall of the National
Sailing Academy, depicting the
Freres de la Cote(GB) logo.
Since the National Sailing Academy was the shore base for the
2012 Olympic Sailing in
Weymouth Bay, we can be sure
that hundreds of the world's finest
sailors will have entered the building. Some of them might even
have noticed our logo!

A PAIR OF POLES POP INTO
POMPEY
where General Eisenhower had directed the D-Day
landings in Normandy
Those Fréres who visited Gdansk last year will
remember the warm hospitality of our Polish
Brothers and so when an email was received from
Jerzy Paleolog, the Polish National Captain, asking
if it was a crazy plan to travel down to Portsmouth
from Luton Airport, visit HMS Victory, and return
to London all on the same day, there was no option
but to say, “Yes. It’s a crazy plan, but come
anyway!
From the top of Portsdown Hill, Jerzy and Ania
delighted in the clear panoramic vista of Portsmouth
Harbour and beyond.
He and his lovely Captive, Ania, landed at Luton
Airport, caught a National Express Coach, changed
at Victoria Coach Station, and arrived in Petersfield
under four hours later. The plan was to stay
overnight with GB National Captain in Petersfield,
and spend the whole of the next day in Portsmouth.
The bus stop was designated “Dragon Street,
Petersfield”, - not exactly as well known a landmark
as “Trafalgar Square” to an overseas visitor, so it
was necessary for Apolonius to stand in the middle
of Dragon Street and wave a Frères de la Côte(GB)
flag in front of the approaching bus, in the hope that
(a) The bus would stop, and (b) the Polish National
Captain would see the flag and get off the bus!
All this was thirsty work, and to help solve this
problem, Old Grog and Janine, Fumée Bleu and
Caroline, De Levante, Tiffy and Falcon joined the
party at the American Bar, in the Camber Dock .
Our Polish visitors said they were so enjoying the
convivial atmosphere, they didn’t want to leave. But
visiting HMS Victory was the main purpose of their
visit, so reluctantly, the party dispersed.
Ruth prepared a splendid “English” dinner of
smoked salmon on fresh asparagus, roast leg of
English Lamb with mint sauce, new potatoes and
lots of vegetables. The rhubarb for the crumble was
fresh from Apolonius’s garden, and the wine fresh
from Tesco!
Even for those of us who have visited her many
times, HMS Victory never fails to impress. Today it
was no different for our Polish visitors. She lived up
to, and exceeded their expectations. In fact the
whole dockyard complex and its attractions were of
great interest to them both.
When the ladies retired to bed, the two National
Captains discussed important Brotherhood matters,
like the availability of a range of Single Malt
Whiskies in Luben, Poland, whilst testing the range
in Apolonius’s collection.
The next morning, in brilliant sunshine, they all
visited the Summer Festivities in Petersfield town
square, and then took the scenic route down to
Portsmouth via the pretty villages of Buriton, East
Meon, and Southwick.
In 1940 Jerzy’s grandfather had been a Battle of
Britain fighter pilot, commanding a Polish squadron
in the RAF, so Jerzy was interested to see
Southwick House, formerly HMS Dryad, from
A stroll along to Gunwharf, for tea and cake,
completed the day for them. At 1900hrs.Jerzy and
Ania collapsed on to the National Express coach at
Portsmouth Harbour, bound for London where they
had planned to stay with relatives.
A very good day for the Brotherhood. In the words
of Jerzy Paleolog, “It was not such a crazy idea
after all!”

Nella splendida cornice della
Città Eterna, Roma, nei giorni 3,4
e 5 Maggio si è svolto il
56°Zafarrancho Nazionale di
Primavera che ha celebrato il 60°
anniversario della nascita dei
primi germogli della Fratellanza
in Italia a cura delle Tavole
primigenie di Roma e Riccione,
alle quali è stata consegnata una
targa ricordo, durante il quale si
sono svolte le elezioni per il
rinnovo delle cariche sociali che
hanno determinato un sostanziale
ricambio nel Governo della
Fratellanza italiana.
Così, mentre i Fratelli liberi
dall’impegno elettivo e molte
cautive potevano ammirare le
vestigia dell’antico porto romano
di Ostia, si è svolto il Consiglio
Grande e Generale durante il
quale le cariche uscenti (il Gran
Commodoro Conn Marcello
Bedogni, il Gran Maestro dei
Saggi Comm. Gianni Paulucci e il
Capitano d’Armamento Conn.
Fabio Bonini) hanno salutato la
Fratellanza che li ha
fragorosamente ringraziati per il
loro lavoro e dedizione.
Di seguito sono stati accolti nuovi
e giovani Fratelli a rinvigorire la
linfa vitale dell’Associazione ed è
stato
consegnato
il
riconoscimento del Gran Simbolo
al Fra Cino Ricci per il lustro
arrecato alla marineria italiana nel
mondo.
La tornata elettorale ha eletto

L’acclamazione è stata intensa e
fragorosa ed è proseguita durante
tutta la cena di Gala durante la
quale sono state festeggiate le
prime Tavole italiane, costituitesi
nel lontano 1953 subito dopo
l’incontro con i Fratelli cileni, con
la consegna di una targa ricordo
per i loro 60 anni di attività da
parte del Gran Commodoro
Partio del puerto de Newport,
Bélgica, navego con escalas hasta
Cabo Verde, cruzo el atlántico en
doce días hasta Salvador, Bahia,
Brasil, luego Rio de Janeiro, Rio
Grande Do Sul, y amarro en el
puerto de Piriapolis en la mañana
del 21 de marzo de 2013.- A parrir de Rio de Janiero nuestra comunicación fue via mail.

Su velero MATMAT, tiene las
siguientes medidas: largo 16m,
ancho 4.2, calado 2.2, peso 18
tons, dos mástiles e importante
equipo de navegación y comunicación. El mismo fue subido al varadero, se le hicieron algunas reparaciones y quedara en tierra hasta
octubre de 2013, donde Xavier
volverá a Uruguay para retornar
navegando a Newport.

etc.- Realmente vivimos unos muy
gratos momentos plenos de Hermandad y Fraternidad.
Luego hicimos un recorrido por
Piriapolis y sus alrededores, y nos
despedimos con la promesa de
encontrarnos el próximo mes de
Octubre.
El viernes 29 de marzo de 2013
retorno, por vía aérea, a su casa en
Lille, Francia, a pocos kilómetros
de la frontera con Bélgica.
Xavier prometió enviar novedades
sobre el Pre y Post ZAF Mundial
Francia 2014.
Puerto de Piriapolis:
Si bien desde su llegada al Uruguay estuvimos en permanente
contacto, el domingo 24 de marzo
de 2013, con mi cautivante Cautiva Maria Ines, fuimos a verlos.
El MATMAT ya estaba en tierra.
Se nos convido a abordar, un
fuerte abrazo motivo el reencuentro, visitamos el velero, brindamos
e hicimos intercambio de regalos.
Luego los invitamos a almorzar
para continuar el relato de su travesía, recordar viejos tiempos, sus
futuros planes, etc.
Quiso el destino que la cautivante
Cautiva Elena Hughes de O¨Neill
entrara al restaurante a buscar una
mesa, de inmediato la convidamos
a que se nos uniera.
La sobremesa fue un excelente
intercambio de aventuras,, Elena
narro al detalle la travesía del
Atlántico de su Padre, Alex Hughes, Rol Nª 2, primer Capitán de la
Nao de Montevideo, en el “BLUE
DISA” , primer uruguayo que lo
cruzo solo a vela. Anécdotas de

suscrito, sino para la Hermandad

tra y en pleno ejercicio de su mando.
Con Luis, compartimos los mismos
sueños, las mismas esperanzas, de un
Conosur potente, vigoroso, fraterno y
generoso, que fuera el pie de playa
que nos impulsara a llevar con fuerza
la buena nueva, por todas la latitudes
del mundo, de que esta Cofradía sí
valía la pena.

El Boga se va con el proyecto de
llevar este año a Chile, a Copiapó, a
su Piratario, al emblemático Zafarrancho Remberto Cabrera, un importante
piquete de Hermanos Argentinos.
Este Piratario, primer monumento
Pirata en honor a los Hermanos en la
Eternidad del mundo, se ha convertido en la meca de los Hermanos de la
Costa.
También estaba trabajando con tenacidad para llevar al próximo Mundial

Que Dios Nuestro Señor se apiade de

hrs. nuestro querido Hermano Honorario y ex Capitán Luis " Delfín"
Montenegro, zarpó al Mar de la Eternidad.
Lamentamos profundamente la partida de este gran Hermano quien fuera
mi padrino y que distinguió a todos
con su amistad y su cariño.
Esperamos que la Capitanía Nacional
y todas las Naos del país icen la bandera negra a media asta en señal de
congoja.

Zolnierzak from Warsaw Table, our
Brother (37), departed on his last
voyage withoutreturn. We wish him
fair winds.
Born in 1927, member of the
resistance during the WW II,
after the war served in the Polish
Navy and later, many moreyears in
deep sea fishing fleet. Back on
mainland he was very much involved
as an organizer in the yachting and
instructor for sail and motor boating.
With a big sorrow I have to relay
news about demise of our Polish Brother #53 Olgierd Iwaszkiewicz from
Lublin Table. After the burial on 25th
April 2013 he is already at Sea of
Eternity. Farewell and Fair Winds

El Tortuga Post es enviado libremente por Email a todos los Hermanos que se están inscritos en BOC-Lista. Las Hermandades nacionales están autorizadas para utilizarlo de acuerdo
a sus necesidades: copias, traducciones parciales, etc, con la condición sin embargo que
siempre se indique la fuente. Por su parte, los
Vigías internacionales comunicarán con uno u
otro de los redactores o a SECOIN las noticias
de su fraternidad. Estos comunicados serán
escritos en una de los cuatro idiomas oficiales
de la fraternidad, y no traducidos normalmente.
The Tortuga Post is sent free by e-mail to all
the Brothers who are on the BOC-List. The
national Brotherhoods are authorized to use it
to fit their needs: copies, partial translations,
etc., with the condition that the source always
be indicated. For their part, the International
Lookouts will communicate the news of their
Brotherhood to one of editors or to SECOIN.

the four official languages of the Brotherhood
