The Priesthood
On May 30, 2014 I was able to attend the ordination of
three men to the priesthood at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in
Rancho Peñasquitos. Attending ordinations is always a beautiful event since men lay down their lives down for the service of
God and His Church. This year’s ordination was particularly
special since one of those ordained, Fr. Minh Do has been appointed Associate Pastor here at St. Francis of Assisi as of July
1st. Needless to say, we are grateful here at St. Francis for the
gift of the priesthood and for the gift of having Fr. Minh Do
with us in a few weeks. There is much more to be grateful for
this year!
A few days ago on May 28th, Fr. Peter Vu Lam who will
be leaving us on June 30th celebrated his 10th anniversary of
ordination. While all of us are saddened by the departure of Fr.
Peter, we are grateful to God for the gift of Fr. Peter and his
priesthood. We are grateful for the 8 years he was part of our
parish community here in Vista and know that he will be an
excellent pastor for the community of Holy Family in San Diego.
In the midst of our gratitude, we are constantly reminded that we must continue to pray for our priests but also
pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood. As many of
you know, Fr. Jay will also be leaving this June 30th. Yet as of
now, we still do not have a replacement for Fr. Peter who oversees Tri City hospital in addition his duties here at the parish.
Our Bishop and Vicar General are aware of our needs and are
working to find a replacement for Fr. Peter, but we must continue to do our part to pray and encourage men to consider the
priesthood.
As we move forward, I ask you to join me in praying
each and every day that the Lord will send more priests to this
portion of His vineyard, especially to St. Francis!

A deanery is an ecclesiastical entity in
the Code of Canon Law. It grants bishops the opportunity to join together several neighboring parishes into special
groups. St. Francis belongs to the
Oceanside Deanery and includes churches in Solana Beach, Carlsbad, Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos,
and Fallbrook.
Each deanery is headed by an elected member and his duties
include:
Promotion and coordination of the common pastoral activity within the deanery;
Seeing that the priests of the deanery lead a life in harmony with their state in life and perform their duties
with diligence;
Seeing that religious functions follow Church norms;
Seeing that the good appearance of churches and sacred
furnishings are maintained;
Seeing that parish books are correctly managed;
Seeing that clerics, following the norms of the diocese and
the norms of Canon 272, attend theological lectures,
meetings, or conferences;
Making sure that the priests of the deanery have access
to spiritual helps and aid in difficult pastoral circumstances; and
Making sure that pastors are well cared for when they
are sick or dying.
Allowing priests to greet and socialize with each other
and discuss issues concerning their parishes.
Additionally, the dean must follow the particular norms of
the diocese. Canon 555 mentions that a dean must visit the
parishes of the district in accord with the regulations made by
the diocesan bishop.

El Sacerdocio
El 30 de mayo tuve la oportunidad de asistir a
la ordenación de tres hombres al sacerdocio en Nuestra Señora del Monte Carmelo en Rancho Peñasquitos. Asistir a ordenaciones es siempre un acontecimiento hermoso ya que estos hombres están entregando enteramente sus vidas para el servicio de Dios y de
su Iglesia. La ordenación de este año fue particularmente especial ya que uno de los ordenados, el Padre
Minh Do ha sido nombrado pastor asociado aquí en la
Iglesia de San Francisco de Asís a partir del 1 de julio. Desde luego, es innecesario decir que estamos muy
agradecidos aquí en San Francisco por el don del sacerdocio y por el don de tener al Padre Minh Doh entre nosotros dentro de unas pocas semanas Hay mucho más que agradecer este año!
Hace unos días, el 28 de mayo, el P. Peter Vu
Lam (nos dejará el 30 de junio) celebró el 10 º aniversario de su ordenación. Si bien todos estamos tristes
por la partida del Padre Peter, estamos muy agradecidos a Dios por el don del Padre Peter y su sacerdocio.
Estamos muy agradecidos por los 8 años que fue parte
de nuestra comunidad de la parroquia aquí en Vista y
sabemos que va a ser un excelente Pastor de la comunidad de la Iglesia de la Sagrada Familia en San Diego.
A pesar de que estamos muy agradecidos por
estas vocaciones, es importante recordar que tenemos
que estar en oración constante, no sólo por nuestros
sacerdotes, sino que tenemos que continuar orando
por el aumento de vocaciones al sacerdocio. Como muchos de ustedes saben, el Padre Jay también se irá a
otra parroquia este 30 de junio. Sin embargo, hasta
ahora, todavía no hay un reemplazo para el Padre Peter, que supervisa el hospital Tri City, aparte de sus
funciones aquí en la parroquia. Nuestro Obispo y Vicario general están conscientes de nuestras necesidades y están en proceso de encontrar un reemplazo para el Padre Peter, pero tenemos que continuar el esfuerzo por nuestra parte para orar y alentar a los
hombres a que consideren el sacerdocio.
A medida que seguimos adelante, les pido que
se unan a mí en oración todos los días para que el Señor envíe más sacerdotes a esta parte de su viñedo,
sobre todo a San Francisco!

¿Sabía usted que . . .
El arciprestazgo (también llamado
decanato) es una entidad eclesiástica en el Código de
Derecho Canónico. Otorga a los obispos la oportunidad
de unir varias parroquias vecinas en grupos específicos.
La Iglesia de San Francisco de Asís pertenece al Decanato de Oceanside e incluye iglesias en Solana Beach,
Carlsbad, Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, y Fallbrook.
Cada decanato está encabezada por un miembro electo
y sus funciones son:
Promoción y coordinación de la actividad pastoral común en el decanato ;
Supervisar que los sacerdotes del decanato lleven una
vida en armonía con su estado de vida y llevar a cabo
sus funciones con diligencia ;
