NORBERT CATHOLIC CHURCH | WWW.STNORBERTCHURCH.ORG 2 Stewardship Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Join Us in Prayer and Remembrance this Memorial Day Jubilee Year of Mercy May 30, at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery Tribute Program at 9 a.m. Mass at 10 a.m. The word mercy, Pope Francis declared in his announcement of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, “reveals the very mystery of the Most Holy Trinity” (Misericordiae Vultus, 2). For mercy is how God comes to meet us; mercy is the fundamental law helping us recognize everyone as brothers and sisters; mercy is the bridge connec ng God and humanity, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness. God’s self-revela on as a lifegiving, love-sharing Trinity of Persons draws us closer to God in friendship and communion. Both Judaism and Islam consider mercy one of God’s most important a ributes. Israel unceasingly proclaims God boundless in mercy. Islam addresses the Creator as “Merciful and Kind,” believing divine mercy limitless, its doors always open. May this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis prays, open us to more fervent dialogue, deepen our mutual understanding, eliminate all closed-minded disrespect, and drive out every form of violence and discrimina on. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. One of the most interes ng figures of the seventh to eighth centuries is Bede of Northumbria in Great Britain, usually referred to as the Venerable Bede. Although never formally canonized, he was named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIII in 1899 and is the only na ve of Britain to have received that honor. At a me when educa on and preserva on of historical documents was at its lowest, Bede became a prolific writer. He is especially known for his Historia Ecclesias cal Gen s Anglorum – a history of the church in England. This five volume work begins with Julius Caesar’s invasion of Britain in 55 B.C. and con nues through the early Chris an missionaries of the Roman Era, including the martyrdom of the first English martyr, St. Alban, in the third century. Bede writes extensively about the era of Pope Gregory the Great, and the Mission to Britain led by St. Augus ne which converted most of Northumberland. The third volume of the work discusses the Synod at Whitby in which the English Church makes a decision to follow the customs of Rome, rather than those of the Cel c monks in Ireland, especially in regard to conflic ng dates for the celebra on of Easter, and monas c customs. This decision had the addi onal effect of strengthening the primacy of the Bishop of Rome over all other Bishops, which Gregory had emphasized. In his fourth volume, Bede writes of Theodore who became Archbishop of Northumberland in 660 AD, and gives an account of the spread of Chris anity to the tribes of Sussex by St. Wilfrid, himself a complex and controversial figure in the English Church of this period. The final volume of the work takes the history from the late seventh century through Bede’s own me. He completed the books in 731. But, Bede did not restrict his wri ng to history. He also wrote detailed commentaries of both the Old and New Testaments using an allegorical method of interpreta on, books on theology, science, music, grammar, poetry, the nature of me, and lives of the saints. Unlike his works on history, science, and theology, his hagiographies were filled with extraordinary miracle accounts of the saints that push the limits of credibility, and opened the door to some of the supers ous prac ces that would develop in the next few centuries. Altogether, he authored more than sixty books. Bede begins the reawakening of scholarship that would develop during the Carolingian renaissance of the eighth and ninth centuries. The only informa on about the Venerable Bede’s early life or family is contained in the last chapter of his book on the History of the English Church. He was born around 672, near the monastery of Jarrow. He does not discuss his parentage, but his associa ons give an indica on that he may have been born into an aristocra c family. As was o en the case with wealthy families, Bede was sent to the monastery at Jarrow at the age of seven. It was under the guidance of these monks that he received such an extensive educa on. He was one of the few residents of the monastery who survived the plague that infected Jarrow in 686. It is not known at exactly what age Bede decided to become a monk himself, but he was ordained as a deacon at only nineteen, which indicates that he was considered excep onal, as normally the deaconate was restricted to men over twenty-five. At age thirty, Bede was ordained a priest by Bishop John of Hexham. He spent his life in study, prayer, and wri ng. Bede died on the Feast of the Ascension, May 26, 735 in his cell a er spending a night in prayer. It is said that he died with the Glory Be prayer on his lips. Originally buried in the monastery of Jarrow, his remains were transferred in the 11th century to the Cathedral in Durham, and despite its being raided during the Reforma on, are thought to s ll be interred there. Bede’s Feast Day is May 30. And, so, the history of the Church con nues. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
