having a Party!
Huesca (Spain) is holding its festival of Saint Lawrence
from 9th to 15th August. This is a week when our town is
completely transformed. The people of Huesca wear white
and green, symbolising the basil plant in flower, and take to the
streets to enjoy the festival to the full.
The rocket launched from the Town Hall at 12 o’clock on
the 9th August signals the start of the festival. Thousands
of young people crowding into the Cathedral Square are
anxiously awaiting to hear this rocket explode. Afterwards,
the five Peñas Recreativas go around the town in a festive
procession with the mairalesas, women and girls representing
districts and peñas.
The 10th August is the great day when the Danzantes dance
their graceful, ancient dances with swords, sticks and ribbons,
first in front of the basilica of Saint Lawrence and then in a
procession around the streets of the town to accompany the
float of the saint, whose bust-reliquiary dates from the end of
the 16th century.
On the 15th August, the last day of the festival, flowers and
fruit are offered to the saint in a stunning display of the folklore
and traditional costumes of Alto Aragón. At night, the Peñas
bid their patron saint farewell at the doors of the basilica.
During the festival, there are the Saint Lawrence Bullfights. Every afternoon of a bullfight, the seats in the sun
present a noisy spectacle as the Peñas and their music bands
gather there.
Day and night the streets become a meeting place for the
townsfolk and visitors to the festival. Concerts, open-air
dances, street performances, children’s shows, fairs, folk music
and dance…brighten various settings, and later on, the bars
and the precinct for the Peñas continue the festival until the
sun rises.
In 2005, the Saint Lawrence festival was declared of National
Interest to Tourism, because of its cultural value and the
traditions it retains.
