MUSIC MINISTRIES
Saint Joseph Music Ministry is seeking
additional singers, instrumentalists and
guitarists to commit to the upcoming
season, September – December. In the
music ministry, you’ll become part of a
group whose mission is to foster the
sung prayer of our community and help create an
environment where faith is nourished. This season
includes weekly rehearsals leading up to our Advent and
Christmas Masses and we need extra musicians to help
make it fully festive. We’ll help you learn the music, and
you don’t have to be a strong reader or singer to join. All
that is required is a willingness to learn the music and be
part of our music ministry team. Call the Music Office for
more information on how to become a part of music
ministries (714) 528-1487 x 208.
LOST TREASURES
The Parish Office frequently receives
items that have been left behind either
during Mass or in our Parish Halls.
Please stop by the parish office if you
have lost something and see if has been
found. Anything not picked up before
October 1, 2014 will be donated to St. Vincent de Paul
Society.

All Creatures of Our God and
King Parish Pet Blessing

2014 to the St. Joseph Field at 9:00 am
for our annual pet blessing.
Pastor’s Column
“Jesus said, ‘Everything has been given over
to me by my Father. No one knows the Son
but the Father, and no one knows the Father
but the Son—and any one to whom the Son
wishes to reveal him.” (Matthew 11:27)
It is said that ‘knowledge is power.’
Perhaps that expression was floating around in
society two thousand years ago when Jesus was
announcing this new Kingdom of God.
Knowledge was important to him since Scripture
tells us that he grew ‘in wisdom, age, and grace.’
But it was a special kind of knowledge. We think
of knowledge as being ‘facts’—science, history,
language. Knowledge is something that we have
to study long hours to obtain. It comes at the
price of our time, our energy, and in the case of
college—our money. As a rabbi, Jesus was a
learned and knowledgeable person.
The knowledge that Jesus speaks about in
this passage is not that of facts but that of
relationship. In the beginning of a relationship of
any kind we know only their name and what they
look like. As we spend more time with them, our
knowledge grows. In time there may be a casual
friendship. As the friendship grows, knowledge of
one another grows in their gifts, abilities,
weaknesses, and challenges. For those destined
to have a lifelong friendship, these become the
hallmarks of their relationship.
Jesus came to reveal the Father’s love for
us. It is a relationship of grace and covenant.
The Father is the only one who recognized Jesus
as his son. In time, Jesus fostered relationships
with his disciples so that they too would recognize
him as the Son of God. Jesus shares with us his
knowledge of the Father since Jesus is the only
one who truly knows the Father since he comes
from the Father. In only three years, the Son
shared his complete knowledge of his Father with
the world. May we look to the Son—in Word and
in Sacrament—to share with us his perfect
relationship of love.

TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
ON CHANGING A TIRE
Years ago, a television commercial showed a
man driving his car on a rainy night. The man, who
looks as though he’s had a rough day and just wants
to get home, comes across an elderly couple with a
flat tire on the side of the road. The man drives past
the disabled car, then stops. He can do the right
thing—change the flat tire for the couple—and get
drenched in the process, or he can keep on going.
The expression on his face sums up his torn
feelings. He looks as though he wishes he hadn’t
seen the couple at all. But he has seen them, and in
the end, he climbs out of his car to help.
ON CHANGING THE WORLD
It’s all about choice, isn’t it? Generally, we
know what’s right and what’s wrong. We know the
virtuous path. The trouble is, the other path is usually the easier and more expedient one, and often, perhaps,
it is our first choice. For those of us who struggle with such choices, what a great Gospel reading! And how
comforting it is if—as we do our part in building up the reign of God—we can see ourselves more often than
not like the first son, the son who said “no” but then “yes!”
Our choices are our own, and the Lord says that we shall live or die by them. Paul counsels us to
choose wisely by taking on the values and attitude of Jesus. The prostitutes and the tax collectors? Yes, they
made some bad choices. But when John called them to repentance, they changed their attitudes and came
running. Not so the chief priests and the elders. If anything, they ran the other way. That man in the
commercial didn’t want to change the tire, but in the end, he did. If ultimately we say yes to Jesus, we can all
change a whole lot more.

THOUGHTS ON GIVING
NEXT SUNDAY’S READINGS
“Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.” Matthew 21:28
Christian discipleship is not easy, God never promised it
would be. But, what He did promise is that if we put Him
first in all things, He will provide all that we need. Through
our daily decisions we have the opportunity to generously
share our gifts and help those who may not be in position
First Reading — The vineyard of the LORD is the house
of Israel (Isaiah 5:1-7).
Psalm — The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel
(Psalm 80).
Second Reading — God’s peace will guard your hearts
and minds (Philippians 4:6-9).
Gospel — The kingdom of God will be given to those
who will produce its fruit (Matthew 21:33-43).

~Padre Jack
