After fourteen years of service at St. Theresa’s, Fr.
Reynolds will be leaving to begin shepherding another parish in Houston, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.
Welcome Home.
I kept hearing those poignant
words as a seemingly endless
stream of people came forward
with handshakes, hugs, kisses,
tears, and well-wishes following
our Confirmation.
You are invited to join us on Wednesday, June 17th
at 7:00 p.m. in the Church as we pray for Fr. Reynolds, for Fr. Eurel Manzano, St. Theresa’s parish,
and for St. Elizabeth Seton parish.
Five of us were fortunate enough to come into the
Church during the Solemnity of Christ the King in
November, 2014. It truly felt like a homecoming,
having spent my life in the Protestant faiths. After all,
the Lutheran, Methodist, and Presbyterian churches I
attended in the past all draw their roots from 1,500
years of Catholic history.
MEMORIAL MASS

There will be a memorial mass for Fr. Ritz on Saturday,
June 13 at 8:30 a.m. here at St. Theresa.
Ironically, I never intended to become Catholic.
When I married my wife in 2013, we agreed that we
would worship together. We came from different
Christian faith backgrounds, but we knew there
would be no “you go your way, I’ll go mine”. Since
she is a cradle Catholic, there was never any question
about where we would spend our Sunday mornings.
I like being informed, so we started attending the
RCIA inquiry classes on Wednesday night. Once we
started, I was hooked!

Dear Brothers and Sisters:
The feast of Pentecost makes us relive
the Church’s beginnings. The Book of
the Acts of the Apostles tells that, 50
days after Easter, in the house where
Jesus’ disciples were, “suddenly a
sound came from heaven like the rush
of a mighty wind, and it filled all the
house.... And they were all filled with
the Holy Spirit” (2:2-4). The disciples
are completely transformed by this
outpouring: fear is supplanted by
courage, imperviousness gives way to
the proclamation, and all doubt is
driven away by faith filled with love. It
is the “baptism” of the Church, which
thus began her journey in history,
guided by the power of the Holy Spirit.
This event, which changes the heart
and life of the Apostles and the other
disciples, is immediately felt outside
the Upper Room. Indeed, that door
kept locked for 50 days is finally thrust
open and the first Christian Community, no longer closed in upon itself,
begins speaking to crowds of different
origins about the mighty works that
God has done (cf. v. 11), that is to say,
of the Resurrection of Jesus who was
crucified. Each one present hears his
own language being spoken by the
disciples. The gift of the Holy Spirit
restores the linguistic harmony that
was lost in Babel, prefiguring the universal mission of the Apostles. The

Church is not born isolated, she is
born universal, one, and Catholic,
with a precise identity, open to all, not
closed, an identity which embraces
the entire world, excluding no one.
Mother Church closes her door in the
face of no one, no one! Not even to
the greatest sinner, to no one! This is
through the power, through the grace
of the Holy Spirit. Mother Church
opens, opens wide her doors to everyone because she is mother.
The Holy Spirit at Pentecost pours into
the hearts of the disciples and begins a
new season: the season of testimony
and fraternity. It is a season which
comes from above, comes from God,
like the tongues of fire that rest on the
head of each disciple. It was the flame
of love which burns all harshness; it
was the tongue of the Gospel which
surpasses manmade borders and
reaches the hearts of the multitudes,
without distinction of language, race
or nationality. As on that day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit is poured out constantly even today on the Church and
on each one of us so we may step outside of our mediocrity and our imperviousness and communicate to the
entire world the merciful love of the
Lord. Communicating the merciful
love of the Lord: this is our mission!
We too have been given the gift of the
“tongue” of the Gospel and the “fire”
of the Holy Spirit, so that while we
proclaim Jesus risen, living and present in our midst, we may warm our

Solemnidad de Pentecostés

Queridos hermanos y hermanas:
La fiesta de Pentecostés nos hace revivir los inicios de la Iglesia. El libro de los
Hechos de los Apóstoles narra que, cincuenta días después de la Pascua, en la
casa donde se encontraban los discípulos de Jesús, «de repente se produjo desde el cielo un estruendo, como de viento que soplaba fuertemente... y se llenaron todos de Espíritu Santo» (2, 1-2). Esta efusión transformó completamente a
los discípulos: el miedo es remplazado por la valentía, la cerrazón cede el lugar
al anuncio y toda duda es expulsada por la fe llena de amor. Es el «bautismo»
de la Iglesia, que así comenzaba su camino en la historia, guiada por la fuerza
del Espíritu Santo.
Ese evento, que cambia el corazón y la vida de los Apóstoles y de los demás
discípulos, repercute inmediatamente fuera del Cenáculo. En efecto, aquella
puerta mantenida cerrada durante cincuenta días, finalmente se abre de par en
par, y la primera comunidad cristiana no permanece más replegada sobre sí
misma, sino que comienza a hablar a la muchedumbre de diversa procedencia
de las grandes cosas que Dios ha hecho (cf. v. 11), es decir, de la Resurrección
de Jesús, que había sido crucificado. Y cada uno de los presentes escucha hablar a los discípulos en su propia lengua. El don del Espíritu restablece la armonía de las lenguas que se había perdido en Babel y prefigura la dimensión universal de la misión de los Apóstoles. La Iglesia no nace aislada, nace universal,
una, católica, con una identidad precisa, abierta a todos, no cerrada, una identidad que abraza al mundo entero, sin excluir a nadie. A nadie la madre Iglesia
cierra la puerta en la cara, ¡a nadie! Ni siquiera al más pecador, ¡a nadie! Y esto
por la fuerza, por la gracia del Espíritu Santo. La madre Iglesia abre, abre de par
en par sus puertas a todos porque es madre.
El Espíritu Santo, infundido en Pentecostés en el corazón de los discípulos, es el
inicio de una nueva época: la época del testimonio y la fraternidad. Es un tiempo que viene de lo alto, viene de Dios, como las llamas de fuego que se posaron
sobre la cabeza de cada discípulo. Era la llama del amor que quema toda aspereza; era la lengua del Evangelio que traspasa los límites puestos por los hombres y toca los corazones de la muchedumbre, sin distinción de lengua, raza o
nacionalidad. Como ese día de Pentecostés, el Espíritu Santo es derramado continuamente también hoy sobre la Iglesia y sobre cada uno de nosotros para que
salgamos de nuestras mediocridades y de nuestras cerrazones y comuniquemos

Catholic Date Night
Friday, June 12 at 7:00 p.m.
Join us for Date Night the second Friday of every month at 7:00
PM in the Community Center. If you have been looking for a way
to get out for a nice evening and share your faith with that special
person in your life then this is the event you have been looking for.
This is also an evening to spend with old friends and to make new ones. If you are new to the parish,
Date Night is a great venue for connecting with your fellow parishioners. We will have excellent dinner, drinks fellowship, and an opportunity to learn and discuss the reasons we are Catholic. The cost is
$10 per person (pay at the door). Any and all adults are welcome. Dates are not necessary. This is
just an opportunity to have a good meal and a good time.

ONCE-CATHOLIC IRELAND ABANDONS MARRAIGE

What happened in Ireland was not sudden. Like a dead
elephant that remains standing for a short while before
collapsing, so the Flame that Patrick kindled on Tara had
died long before Catholicism was mixed up with political causes, and ethnic drollery replaced dogma. In mordant irony, just a few weeks ago the Stormont in Northern Ireland rejected a motion favoring same–sex unions,
a motion more indicting for having been introduced by
the Sinn Féin, which had long persuaded naïve Americans that it was a Catholic cause.
The Constitution of Ireland
begins: “In the name of the
Most Holy Trinity, from
Whom is all authority and
to Whom, as our final end,
all actions both of men and
States must be referred, /
We, the people of Éire, /
Humbly acknowledging all
our obligations to our Divine Lord, Jesus Christ . . .”
The Archbishop of Dublin, hardly a firebrand, said:
“Marriage is not simply about a wedding ceremony or
about two people being in love with each other. Marriage, in the Constitution, is linked with the family and
with a concept of family and the mutuality of man and
woman as the foundation for the family.”
The landslide vote in Eire for legalizing the fictitious
form of marriage between persons of the same sex, in
contradiction of all laws natural and divine, unearths
the pulsating Druidism that Saint Patrick and his fellow
saints defied. The estimated $17 million from pressure
groups in the United States is no excuse, for people
will only be pressured if they are willing to be pressured. Another dismal fact is that over 90% of the
young people influenced to subscribe to this vote were
formed in Catholic schools. The vote was less in favor
of inversion and more in hostility to a Church whose
Jansenism and clericalism had incubated corruption
and lassitude. While most of Europe suffers from the

All the great saints of once-verdant Ireland would have
used stronger language.

the flourishing of that Faith degenerated here, that donation was returned in the form of a bacillus. Ireland
today has among the highest rates of suicide and mental illness in all Europe, and one-third of children there
are born out of wedlock. Things are worse in the United States. Look at the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in
New York City to see what happens when the honor of
a saint is dishonored, and when ambassadors for Christ
become nothing more than goodwill ambassadors.

PRAYER BEFORE MASS
Almighty and ever-living God, I approach the sacrament of Your only-begotten Son Our Lord Jesus
Christ. I come sick to the doctor of life, unclean to
the fountain of mercy, blind to the radiance of eternal light, and poor and needy to the Lord of heaven
and earth. Lord, in your great generosity, heal my
sickness, wash away my defilement, enlighten my
blindness, enrich my poverty, and clothe my nakedness. May I receive the bread of angels, the King of
kings and Lord of lords, with humble reverence, with
the purity and faith, the repentance and love, and the
determined purpose that will help to bring me to salvation. May I receive the sacrament of the Lord's
Body and Blood, and its reality and power. Kind
God, may I receive the Body of Your only-begotten
Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, born from the womb of

Saint Thomas Aquinas
St. Theresa Catholic School students from the House of
More won the $500 first-place prize on Saturday, May
16th in The Great Grow's yearly Student Garden competition. The contest encourages a healthy lifestyle in
children through a hands-on educational gardening
program. The House of St. Thomas More, one of three
houses at the school, is led by Mr. Martin Flaherty with
the assistance of Dr. Catherine Bilow, and initiated its
garden project this year to help teach all students at
the school the science and joy of plants and gardening
with the hope of sharing the fruits (or more correctly
vegetables) of their labors with the nearby food pantry.
The House of More's garden competes next month in
several other regional gardening competitions.

I thank you, holy Lord, almighty Father, eternal God,
who deigned to feast me, sinful and unworthy servant, with the precious body and blood of your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord, not for any merit of mine, but
only because of your merciful goodness. And I pray
that this Holy Communion, far from condemning me
to punishment, may bring about my pardon and salvation, encompassing me with the armor of faith and
the shield of a good will. By it let my vices be done
away, all lustful desires extinguished. May it advance
me in charity, patience, humility, obedience, and
every other virtue. Let it be strong defense against the
wiles of all my enemies, visible and invisible, allaying for me every disturbance of flesh and spirit, binding me firmly to you, the one true God, and bringing

I also learned that worship is not just a cerebral activity.
During my life as a Protestant I sat in church, absorbed
what was said, then went on my merry way until the
next Sunday. But in the Catholic Church, there’s genuflecting, holy water, kneeling, standing, sitting, handholding, incense, and a variety of other activities. God
created all five senses, so why not worship Him with all
my being!
Even now, I see the Mass as an active participant and try
to draw meaning and inspiration from each moment. I
hope I will never again sit in church passively.
For those who are looking for ways to explore your Catholic faith more deeply, I strongly recommend you get
involved with RCIA. My wife was as enriched by the
experience as I was, even though she’s been a practicing
Catholic all her life. Having spoken with people who
attend other parishes, the coordinators of the program at
St. Theresa should probably be the model for bringing
seekers to the Church. It is a vibrant program, and I look
forward to remaining involved with my new friends in
Christ for many years to come.
