Also called “The Way of the Cross,” this is a popular devotion that represents fourteen specific events experienced by Jesus during his trial, crucifixion, death, and burial. While it is practiced year round, it is particularly appropriate during the season of Lent. In the early days of the Church, pilgrims visited Jerusalem and prayed at certain points on Jesus’ actual path to Calvary. Now a more symbolic version of this practice is encouraged as an expression of devotion and piety. Precepts Of The Church A Catholic Job Description To help us give God our very best, the Catholic Church has outlined responsibilities that will help us grow in love of God and each other. Keep every Sunday holy. “The Sunday celebration of the Lord's Day and his Eucharist is at the heart of the Church's life” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2177). It’s vital that we worship God at Mass each Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation (unless unavoidably prevented). Confess at least once a year. Few humans can go an entire year without committing a serious sin. Turn to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Receive Communion at least during the Easter season. Prepared by the Sacrament of Reconciliation, receive the Eucharist as often as possible but especially during the Easter season. Fast and abstain. To help us control appetites of all kinds, the Church established times of penance when fasting and abstinence help us focus on God. Provide for the Church. To keep our Church healthy and strong, we each must care for her and contribute what we can. Jesus, I Trust In You! Importante!!!!!! Year of Mercy Spiritual Work of Mercy – Comfort the Sorrowful To comfort the sorrowful is a spiritual work of mercy because it strengthens the human spirit in its weakest moral moment of sadness, just as the Holy Spirit strengthens the whole church and all her members. To comfort is to fortify the soul: strengthening the intellect to understand the cause of sorrow and the means of its cure, and strengthening the will in order to keep faith in the face of discouragement. Man is made for happiness, and thus sorrow contradicts humanity. But ever since the first man and woman shed the world’s first years at the sight of enigmatic death and a lost paradise, sorrow has been the consequence of love, albeit love lost. The indifferent feel no sorrow. Saint John Vianney said to a man making a perfunctory confession with no real contrition . “O weep because you do not.” In contrast, the hateful rejoice in the sorrow of others and are saddened only when they cannot inflict more sorrow. The Man of Sorrows was Perfect Love, and in his perfection he was incapable only of indifference and hate. His sorrow was more intense than any the world has ever known. The liturgical “Reproaches” on Good Friday ask: “Is there any sorrow like unto my sorrow…?” So intense was that grief that the night before he was crucified he sweat blood, a hemorrhage of all the world’s agony. In those hours his human nature craved the comfort of friends. Peter and James and John were little comfort, as they were sleeping. “Could you not watch with me one hour?” No sorrow is more revealing and expressive of the bond of love than the sorrow one has for the suffering of another. To comfort someone else strengthens the self as much as the other. This holy economy was visible between Christ on the cross and Mary at the foot of the cross, comforting each other in the world’s most horrible scene. Empathy is stronger than sympathy. Jesus have his Mother to mankind as he was dying so that she might be our paramount comforter in the tragic hours: “Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.” Saint Therese of Lisieux said, “I assure you that the good Lord is much kinder than you can imagine. He is satisfied with a glance. With a sigh of love.” The greatest comfort is to be able to return that glance, as did his Mother, Then hear him say: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Mt 11:28) - Pope Francis St. Joseph Center for Special Learning is seeking part-time office help. Help Catholics Come Home Do you know someone who was baptized Catholic but has stopped attending Mass, is questioning the faith, or hasn’t found a parish home? Why not help your friend to come home? Perhaps you can act as a resource or offer to attend Mass together. If you aren’t sure how to help, ask your pastor or priest for advice. Divine Mercy Parish Bishops Annual Appeal Goal $ 28,931.00 Total Collected $ 12,683.00 0218 DM – Page 6 September 25, 2016 – Twenty Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time Wanted: Bridge Builders In Jesus’ day, the accustomed action for people who didn’t conform to usual standards of behavior was to turn them into outcasts. Jesus showed us another way. He didn’t expel sinners but forgave them. In fact, many of his healings helped restore people to their communities. By commanding us to love our enemies, Jesus demanded that we become bridge builders and refuse to recognize anyone as an enemy. As his followers, he wants us to build bridges, not walls. Listen without talking. Building bridges requires understanding others’ needs. Listening well is key but can be hard to do. Try starting a conversation and practice just listening. Maintain eye contact and don’t plan your response until the other person has finished speaking. Empathize. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. It means setting aside your own personal agenda so you can fully understand the other person’s needs. Be an instrument of peace. A disagreement doesn’t have to become a conflict. We gain nothing by being nasty or obnoxious. Instead, stick to the facts and be firm but friendly. Avoid gossip and gossips. This is the most obvious tip but talking about others behind their backs leads to trouble for others and for you. If you are asked about someone else, always find something positive to say. St. Mother Théodore Guérin Predicted at age ten that she would become a nun. At age 25, she became a Sister of Providence of Ruillé-surLoir in France. She was soon asked to lead missionary sisters to Indiana where their base was a log cabin with a porch for a chapel. By her death in 1856, she had opened schools throughout Illinois and Indiana, trusting in God’s providence to accomplish the impossible. "The world promises you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness." Pope Benedict XVI Nativity BVM High School is accepting applications for the position of Part Time Learning Support Teachers (Special Ed. Certification required) for the 2016-2017 school year. What Is So Bad About Using God’s Name In Vain? In Jesus’ day, even speaking God’s name could be punished by death. Today, we can hardly sit through a movie or television show without hearing it used as a swear word. Using God’s name in a disrespectful manner doesn’t make it any less holy, but it does make it less holy in the eyes of the world. We who are Christians and followers of Christ have promised to uphold God’s laws. If we allow those around us to use God’s name in vain, or worse, do it ourselves, we tell the world that we don’t think God’s laws are important. For example, God said, “You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain” (Exodus 20:7) and Jesus told us to say, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name” (Matthew 6:9). Yet, if we disobey and use the precious name in vain or sit idly by while others do, we demonstrate our disdain for the honor of his name and his instructions. Neither is wise or desirable.
