Our Casas offers counseling to
potential home buyers free of charge

For those who are interested in
buying a new home or making a
move, it is best to seek advice from
an experienced housing counselor
before you move forward to make
the big decision.
Our Casas Resident Council Inc.
would like to be there every step of
the way. The company was organized as a Texas nonprofit corporation in 1990 and has helped many
families throughout the process of
making the best decision with a
current or future home.
For the past 26 years, the company has engaged in single family, multi-family and commercial
projects designed to facilitate reinvestment and development in the
inner city by providing incentives
for economic development. Our
Casas also seeks opportunities and
partnerships for affordable housing, economic development and
redevelopment projects.
It was important for Our Casas to
reach out to the community because
currently, there have been issues
that prevent people from living
comfortably. Instead of making
the big decision about purchasing
a home right away with anyone,
Our Casas wants the community to
know that there are many resources
out there to help those who are currently having issues.
For Housing Counselor Juan
Gutierrez, one of the big problems
he finds in his office is when first
time home buyers are scammed
into paying more than they should.
“It is emotional blackmail. They
know that people want this dream
and are willing to do whatever they
want, even if that means paying
double of what the interest rate is
right now on a home loan. The average home interest rate is between
3.5 percent and 4.5 percent, and
the scam artists will give anyone
a home loan charge of 6 to 10
percent,” Gutierrez told La Prensa.
Interested homebuyers can also
attend educational seminars, organized by Our Casas, that offer
certificate of completion and even
mortgage loan pre-qualification.
The ultimate goal for Gutierrez is
for people to be happy after buying
their home instead of feeling regret.
All of the Our Casas services are
free of charge.
“People have to be strategic when
it comes to that credit score in order
to obtain a loan with a decent interest rate before they could go on in to
purchase a home,” explained Gutierrez. “We try to council people on
those, but ultimately, what we do
is we try to give people a roadmap
to get to that point where we can
achieve that dream on buying that
home and make sure that they can
afford it.”
Besides assisting first time homebuyers, the company offers counseling services for families needing
longer than 90 days to prevent
foreclosure, basic homeownership,
one-on-one counseling, credit counseling and credit rebuilding.
Our Casas is familiar with assisting senior citizens who fall behind
on their property taxes, an issue that

according to Gutierrez is increasing. However, Our Casas can help
mediate with the county and make
adjustments on their taxes.
Another issue affecting the community is when families or individuals are unjustly asked to leave
their apartments, or rental homes,
or get evicted for no reason, which
often times happens when the landlord gets foreclosed on. In one case,
Our Casas was able to help many
families move into transitional
housing successfully when many
were displaced from the Missions
Trails mobile home community
last year.

St. Patrick’s Day celebrations
underway in San Antonio

Saint Patrick’s Day is tomorrow and celebrations in San
Antonio are already underway.
St. Patrick, the patron saint of
Ireland, is one of Christianity’s
most widely known figures. St.
Patrick’s Day is celebrated on
March 17, his religious feast
day and the anniversary of his
death in the fifth century. The
Irish have observed this day as
a religious holiday for over a
thousand years.
On St. Patrick’s Day, which
falls during the Christian season of Lent, people all over
the country, including San
Antonio, celebrate by wearing green, drink and feast on
traditional Irish meals. The
San Antonio River at the River
Walk has been dyed green and
many attended the St. Patrick’s
Day Festival and River Parade
this past weekend, organized by
the Harp & Shamrock Society
of Texas.
However, the celebrations
will continue this week. This
year, the Harp & Shamrock
Society of Texas is celebrating
its 50th Anniversary of keeping Irish history and culture
alive in San Antonio and South
Texas.
The Irish legacy in Texas
started in 1836 at the birth of
Texas with 188 defenders at
the Alamo (of which 12 were
Irish-born), four Irishmen who
signed the Texas Declaration of
Independence and 100 listed in
the rolls of the Texans fighting
at the Battle of San Jacinto.

‘Ballet in the Park’ delivers education
and a passionate performance

A performance that is presented to
an audience will hardly leave their
minds because the memory of it all
is inspiring to watch and replay.
This weekend, Ballet San Antonio presented their third annual
“Ballet in the Park,” a performance
that came with not only several
performances by experienced ballet
dancers, but also an education for
the community to spread the word
all around San Antonio.
One can see how the company
has improved since Artistic Director
Willy Shives stepped in to show that
he is not only here to keep dancers
on their toes, but also to get the company involved outside the studio.
Shives told La Prensa recently that
it is time for ballet to be exposed to
the community as an art form that
can reach all ages in San Antonio.
“A lot of people aim for the arts,
but here in San Antonio you have
the ballet, you have the opera, you
have the symphony, and in order
to get the audience out there, you
have to educate them. You have
to go the public school system, the
private sector to be able to educate
the children…then the children take
it to the parents. All of this reaching
out is growth for outreach organization and for our community because
we have beautiful art to display,”
Shives told La Prensa.
Reaching out was simple for the
company’s dancers as they began
the show with a demonstration of
their days at work at the barre every
Monday through Friday. During the
demonstration, Ballet Master Amy
Fote educated the audience on the
history of ballet, how to do the position properly and the importance of
pointe shoes.
Once warm-ups were finished, the
delightful performance began. The
dance highlights included an excerpt
from “Flower Festival in Genzano,”
telling the story of a pair of young
lovers, Rosa and Paolo.
Although Ballet San Antonio premiered “Swan Lake” for the 2015-
2016 season, they replayed it for the
audience to look at the improvement
of Ian Morris’ footwork and Sally
Turkel’s high level of experience
as a dancer. In addition to the performance, Shives premiered the
beautiful performance of “Solace,”
a poignant pas de deux featuring the
music of John Williams.
“Solace” was the best excerpt
from the program as you could
see the desire inside the dancers to
tell the story. As Kate Maxted and
Christopher McDaniel’s foot work
kept up with the music and they
told their story through acting, one
could see that Shives put a sense of
aliveness in his dancers to show real
passion to what they love doing.
The final performance was one to
be excited about as Shives created
an ode to San Antonio. The “Tropical Fiesta” presentation combined
Latin rhythms and Mexican folk
music that got many audience
members excited about the music
and the performance. One could see
the audience glued their eyes to not
miss the grand finale.
Once the recital was done, it was
an inspiration for many to be a part
of the Ballet San Antonio in the near
future or even start attending the
events to never let go of that delightful memory. Ballet San Antonio has
many convinced that this was one
performance worth watching right
in the heart of downtown. Their next
performance “Ballet Alive!” will be
in early April.
“The more we reach out to the
community, the more growth we
are going to have for ballet San
Antonio,” said Shives. “We are
going to be in everybody’s eyes
and their minds, and that is going
to help us grow as a professional
ballet company.”

de la propiedad al disminuir el valor de la misma. Si su residencia está valorada en $50,000 y recibe una exención de
$25,000, la residencia pagará los impuestos de una residencia
valorada en $25,000.

a 85 contra el visitante Thunder
de Oklahoma City consumaron
su trigésimo segundo triunfo
consecutivo en casa (AT&T
Center) para beneplácito de la
fanaticada local y de los más de
18 mil espectadores que observaron el clásico sabatino que fue
transmitido a nivel nacional por
la cadena ESPN.
Spurs lograron vengarse de la
derrota que Thunder le propinó
en el partido de apertura jugado
el miércoles 28 de octubre en la
Chesapeake Energy Arena de
Oklahoma City, donde cayeron
por marcador de 112-106.
Spurs y Thunder tienen dos
partidos por jugar dentro del rol
regular en la campaña 2015-16
de la NBA.
El tercer partido lo jugarán en
OKC el sábado 26 de marzo.
Para el cuarto San Antonio
será anfitrión el martes 12 de
abril, el cual también será su último partido en calidad de local
