MERCY THROUGH SERVICE
A
s children of God, we are called to be
servants to one another. During this
Jubilee Year of Mercy, we solidify our
commitment to be “Merciful Like the
Father” through our continued prayers and handson participation in our community. It is an excellent
opportunity to make good on our promise to be
faithful servants. The Diocese of Laredo is proud to
be home to a multitude of individuals who embody
this commitment to serve their community by
volunteering their time and talents.
In this issue of La Fe, we feature five outstanding ladies
who serve their parish as catechists. Their invaluable work
is not taken for granted, as they instruct and guide children
and young adults in the Church’s teachings. Since most of
them have hectic schedules and have to handle all their other
responsibilities at work and at home, their commitment to
their parish and to God is even more commendable. We
applaud all the selfless souls who have stepped up to be
catechists in their parishes. Through the stories of these
outstanding women, we hope more people will gain the
courage to take on the challenge. Shaping the minds and
hearts of impressionable young people is no easy task. Yet,
what can be more noble than to teach these young men and
women that God is the way and the light of the world?
Another powerful example of a person fully committed
to serving God and her fellow men is the story of Romelia
Urrutia, a faithful servant who celebrated 20 years of
promoting and leading the recitation of the Holy Rosary
for Our Lady of Guadalupe at San Carlos Mission this year.
Romelia knows that it takes great discipline and sacrifice to
be able to keep her commitment of conducting daily rosaries.
Nonetheless, her positive attitude and great devotion have
kept her motivated.
Finally, our annual Catholic Conference, aptly titled “Face of
Mercy,” was a successful event with more than 800 attendees!
Two of our distinguished guest speakers, Tim Staples from
Catholic Answers and Sister Guadalupe Ramírez from the
Mexican American Catholic College, sat down with us for
exclusive interviews about their work, and they touched on some
of the most pressing issues regarding the Catholic Church.
Let’s make this Year of Mercy one to remember. If there’s
anything you can do to be of service, either at home, school
or at your parish, I encourage you to lend a helping hand.
No matter how big or small your contribution might be,
remember that everything counts. Make it a goal for yourself
to be more involved, and always remember that with God
by your side, all you can do is try your best and live your life
according to His word – Todo Con Amor!

DEL SERVICIO
C
omo hijos de Dios, somos llamados
para ser siervos el uno al otro. Durante
este Año del Jubileo de la Misericordia,
nosotros solidificamos nuestro compromiso de
ser “Misericordiosos como el Padre”, a través de
nuestras continuas oraciones y nuestra activa
participación en la comunidad. Es una oportunidad
excelente de cumplir con nuestra promesa de ser
siervos fieles. La Diócesis de Laredo se enorgullece
de ser hogar a una multitud de individuos que
viven este compromiso de servir a su comunidad al
ofrecer su tiempo y talento voluntariamente.
En esta edición de La Fe, resaltamos cinco mujeres
sobresalientes que sirven en sus parroquias como catequistas. Su
invaluable trabajo no se da por sentado, ya que instruyen y guían
a niños y adultos con las enseñanzas de la Iglesia. Ya que muchas
de ellas tienen horarios ajetreados y tienen que coordinar sus
responsabilidades en el trabajo y en la casa, su compromiso a su
parroquia y a Dios es aun más encomiable. Aplaudimos a todas las
almas generosas que han tomado la iniciativa de ser catequistas
en su parroquia. A través de las historias de estas mujeres
sobresalientes, esperamos que más personas tengan la valentía
de tomar esta tarea. Moldear las mentes y corazones de jóvenes
influenciables no es un trabajo fácil. Sin embargo, ¿qué puede ser
más noble que enseñar a estos jóvenes hombres y mujeres que
Dios es el camino y la luz del mundo?
Otro poderoso ejemplo de una persona completamente
comprometida a servir a Dios y a sus semejantes es la historia de
Romelia Urrutia, una fiel sierva quien este año celebró 20 años
de promover y liderar el rezo del Santo Rosario para Nuestra
Señora de Guadalupe en la Misión de San Carlos. Romelia sabe
que se necesita de gran disciplina y sacrificio para poder mantener
su compromiso de conducir los rosarios diarios. No obstante, su
actitud positiva y su gran devoción la han mantenido motivada.
Finalmente, nuestra Conferencia Católica Anual, acertadamente
titulada “Rostro de la Misericordia”, fue un evento exitoso ¡con más
de 800 asistentes! Dos de nuestros distinguidos ponentes, Tim
Staples de Catholic Answers y la Hermana Guadalupe Ramírez
del Colegio Católico México-Americano, se sentaron con nosotros
para unas entrevistas exclusivas sobre su trabajo y hablaron sobre
algunos de los temas más apremiantes en cuanto a la Iglesia
Católica.
Hagamos este Año de la Misericordia uno para recordar. Si
hay algo que Usted pueda hacer de servicio ya sea en casa, en
la escuela, o en su parroquia, lo exhorto a que preste una mano
amiga. No importa que tan pequeña o grande su contribución pueda
ser, recuerde que todo cuenta. Tómelo como una meta personal,
involucrarse más, y siempre recuerde que, con Dios a su lado,
todo lo que puede hacer es intentar lo mejor de sí y vivir su vida de
acuerdo con Su palabra. –¡Todo con amor!

WE NEED ‘US’ TIME
Sarah and I need a “date night”; we haven’t been out
alone together since our son was born three months
ago. We haven’t lived here long and don’t know too
many people, but I have a co-worker whose teenage
daughter is willing to baby-sit. Sarah refuses to leave
the baby with her. I would really like to spend some
baby-free time – is that wrong?
It’s not wrong for Mike to want a “date
night.” But Sarah’s concern for their son is

and protecting their child will bear good
fruit for all three of them.
Every new baby – especially the first – has a way of taking
over parents’ time and attention. It’s only natural. They’re so
adorable! And they need us so totally. And it’s part of God’s
plan.
But that can be a pitfall. That intense love for the new little
person can sometimes lead one parent – or both – to neglect
their first love for one another.
Not only is this “child-first, spouse-second” parenting not
good for the couple, it’s not good for their child. A huge part
of any child’s sense of security and stability rests upon the
security and stability of his parents’ love and visible affection
for one another.
How can Mike and Sarah make this work? First, oneon-one time together doesn’t have to mean a “night out.”
Sometimes circumstances just won’t allow for it. When that
happens, what about a “night in” together? The possibilities
are endless for the creative and motivated couple.
But getting out of the house is a worthy goal, too, especially if both really want it. Any baby-sitter should be someone
both parents are comfortable with, and Sarah is within her
rights to be reluctant about this 13-year-old.
But is she the only option? Perhaps friends or family could
recommend another? Or maybe Mike and Sarah could try
out this 13-year old first, just for a quick getaway to the corner coffee shop. See how it goes and take it from there.
It’s been said that a mother’s and a father’s main jobs are
to give their children deep roots and strong wings. A lifetime of purposefully nurturing their marriage is one of the
most effective ways to give their children both.

I can’t imagine leaving our tiny baby with a 13-yearold whose only baby-sitting experience is with her
5-year-old brother! I would feel guilty and worried
the entire evening – which I think would defeat the
purpose of a date night. Since we don’t live near
family or close trusted friends, I think Mike and I need
to wait until the baby is older.

o ambos – a descuidar su primer amor, el amor de pareja.
No solamente es negativo para la pareja pensar en una paternidad/
maternidad donde el hijo esta antes que la pareja, sino que también
esto es negativo para el hijo. Una gran parte de la seguridad y la
estabilidad de un niño descansan sobre la seguridad y la estabilidad
del amor y el visible afecto que sus padres se tienen entre sí.
¿Cómo pueden Mike y Sarah lograr que este funcione? En primer
lugar, un tiempo para estar juntos no necesariamente significa
salir juntos. A veces las circunstancias no lo permiten. Y cuando
esto sucede, debemos pensar en una noche juntos, en casa. Las
posibilidades son infinitas para una pareja que es creativa y está
motivada.
Pero salir de la casa, por supuesto, también es algo importante,
especialmente si ambos así lo desean. Toda niñera debe ser una
persona en la que ambos padres sientan que pueden confiar, y Sarah
está en su derecho de sentirse incomoda con una chica de 13 años.
¿Es ella la única opción? Tal vez haya amigos o familia que puedan
recomendar a otra persona. Tal vez Mike y Sarah puedan poner a
prueba a esta joven de 13 años primero dándole la responsabilidad

BELIEVE IN GOD?
Father Joe: Why should I believe in
Q Dear
God? Do you have proof He exists? And if He
does, how do I know He gives a hoot about me?
A
You’ve got some great questions here and I think the best approach is to take them one at a time … let’s go!
Why should I believe in God? Well, because if God exists, then
it would seem important that we acknowledge His existence. Blaise
Pascal wrote something on this that boils down to a simple idea: If
you don’t believe in God and He exists, you have lost something very
important. If He doesn’t exist and you believe in Him, what have you
lost?
I think one of the challenges to having a legitimate discussion
about the existence of God (or a god) is that many well-intentioned
people are coming to see atheistic talk or belief as somehow more
sophisticated or “scientific.” The problem is many great minds of the
past and present have not only held that there is a God, but some
have spent their lives in pursuit of that God. To believe in God is not
anti-intellectual or anti-science. As Francis Bacon (the father of the
scientific method) is quoted as saying, “Small amounts of philosophy
lead to atheism, but larger amounts bring us back to God.”
The other challenge is the tendency to lump all believers in God
into the category of “fundamentalists.” As Catholics, we simply aren’t
fundamentalists and are comfortable exploring how God made the
universe and what science can teach us.
The final challenge is that we live in a sound-bite world and, right
now, if you can’t communicate why you believe in God in a few
words or simple sentences, you end up unable to engage many of the
more aggressive non-believers. This one is not easily overcome; we
must be patient, gentle, kind and well-informed.
With all that then ...

How do I know he gives a hoot about me? How do we
know anyone gives a hoot about us? We look at their actions,
words and behaviors, and we draw a judgment from that.
Going to the sign on your porch example, wouldn’t you assume
that the person who went through all the effort for your birthday
gives a hoot about you?
Look at the complexity of you and the world you live in. Look
at the wonder, awe and beauty in the things God made. Does this
seem like a cold, distant God to you or a God who loves beauty?
The fact that He gave us minds that can explore and discover all
that we have about creation can help us see further that this God
wants to be known – what a blessing!
There are a lot of different ways to approach this question and
I’ve only walked you down one path. If you’d like to explore many
other arguments or proofs, you can look in numerous places. My

Do I have proof that he exists? “Proof” is a funny word and
gets thrown around a lot, even though we might mean something
different. The dictionary defines proof as: “Arriving at a logical
conclusion, based on the available evidence.” If we stick with that
idea then, yes, I think there are many ways one can prove that there
is a God. To go the route of arriving at a logical conclusion based on
available evidence, we can explore the issue by using our experience
and reason. When speaking about proof for God’s existence, Dr. Peter
Kreeft spoke about how you and I tend to take most questions in life
into “the courtroom of our minds.”
He said that every day, you and I make decisions by weighing evidence and making a decision based off of what is most likely. I like
that, and find that to match up with most people’s experience – we
weigh evidence and make a decision based on what is most likely.
We can do this with God in many different ways. I’ll look at my
favorite way, called the argument from design.
In this argument, we point to the fact that whenever you and I see design, we assume a designer.
For example, let’s say that today is your birthday
(Happy Birthday!).
Now, imagine that today, after work or school,
you walk home and find a massive banner on your
front porch that says “Happy Birthday!” When you
see that sign, what would you think? Would you
assume that there was an incredible chain of random
events that all culminated in you finding the appropriate sign at
the appropriate place? Of course not! Your reaction would be to
assume that someone put that sign there intentionally. Why do you
assume that it was intentional? Because that is the most reasonable
conclusion to draw from the world you are in. How many different
random events would have to come to together perfectly for a sign
to be made that says “Happy Birthday” and then end up in front of
your house on your birthday? The odds of this happening without
someone intending it would be so staggering as to take us out of
the realm of what is possible and into the world of “ridiculous.”
Now, look at you – your brain, your body and the way it all
works. Look at the planet and the universe and how complex and
interconnected all these things are.
The odds of all these things being random and undesigned are
much, much greater than the odds of the sign on your porch on
your birthday. The most logical assumption as you look at the evidence is that there is a designer to the universe, the planet and you.
This example will help with your next question as well.

The Diocese of Laredo is blessed to have a dedicated team of catechists who
instruct our children not only about the teachings of the Church, but, above all
else, about God’s love and the sacrifice that He made for all of us. Oftentimes,
we forget that we are role models for the children around us – whether they
are our students, neighbors, nieces and nephews, or even our own sons and
daughters. We have a strong influence to set the right example and guide them
so they may follow the Lord’s path. As Pope Francis said during his address to
the International Congress on Catechesis, “Being a catechist means witnessing
to the faith, being consistent in our personal life. This is not easy! We help,
we lead others to Jesus with our words and our lives, with our witness.” La Fe
presents the testimony of five women who are catechists in different parishes
and missions in our diocese. These are the unsung heroes amongst us, and we
want to recognize them for their selfless dedication and service. We want them
to be an example to people who are considering following this vocation.
La Diócesis de Laredo está bendecida de tener un equipo de catequistas
con mucha dedicación, que enseñan a nuestros hijos no sólo acerca de
las enseñanzas de la Iglesia, pero por encima de todo, sobre el amor de
Dios y el sacrificio que hizo por todos nosotros. Muchas veces olvidamos
que somos modelos a seguir para los niños que nos rodean; ya sea para
nuestros estudiantes, vecinos, sobrinos o incluso nuestros propios hijos.
Tenemos una poderosa influencia para poner el ejemplo correcto y guiarlos
para que puedan seguir el camino del Señor. Como dijo el Papa Francisco
durante su discurso en el Congreso Internacional sobre la Catequesis,
“Ser catequista significa dar testimonio de la fe; ser coherente en la propia
vida. ¡Esto no es fácil! Ayudamos, guiamos al encuentro con Jesús con
las palabras y con la vida, con el testimonio”. La Fe presenta el testimonio
de cinco mujeres que son catequistas de diferentes parroquias y misiones
en nuestra diócesis. Estas son las heroínas escondidas entre nosotros, y
queremos reconocerlas por su dedicación y servicio. Nosotros queremos
que sean un ejemplo para las personas que están considerando seguir esta
vocación.

Bertha
Bertha De La Cruz is the Coordinator for Special
Needs Catechism at San Martin De Porres Church in
Laredo, TX. Serving in the only parish in Laredo that
offers a program specifically geared towards children
with special needs, Bertha and her team work
diligently to bring these children closer to Christ.
“We think that we have a connection with God at
some point. We think that, and we are sinners. And
these kids are not. These kids are so innocent. I
think that their connection is a lot bigger than ours.
I love it. I like being involved there,” she says.
Currently, the program serves 24 children from
different parishes in Laredo. Bertha is proud of
the progress the kids make during their time in
the program. She also notes that the catechists
that she recruits need to a have a calling for this
ministry. “It has to be that you like what you do.
That it’s not your profession, it’s your vocation to
work with kids,” Bertha states. “When somebody
wants to volunteer, that’s what I look for. Is it really
something that you’ve got your heart in it or is it
something that you just do for a living?”
There are many challenges that come with
teaching catechism to special-needs children. Many
parishes lack the resources to start and maintain
CCD classes for special-needs children. “Our
population is very small. It’s hard to set up a class for
just one child and to get the teachers,” Bertha states.
In the event of such a case, the special needs CDD
teachers train parents so they can teach the kids
at home. They provide all the necessary materials
and instruct the parents to do a home program for
the child, if needed. “Since special-needs is very
specific, we go case by case.” Additionally, Bertha
helps prepare materials for children in the special
education CCD programs in Zapata, Hebbronville
and Eagle Pass.
Bertha is looking to encourage more coordinators
at the parishes to let parents know about the
program offered at San Martin. She insists that
parents whose children have special needs should
feel welcome in the Catholic Church. “We know
that there’s a lot more kids out there that can be
having that relationship with God if the parents
knew about [the special needs program],” she
affirms. “We’ve had meetings with coordinators. We
ask them not to turn parents away. All their lives,
they’ve been turned away. These parents just want
for their child to have something; to be normal in
something. The Church should offer it.”

Bertha De La Cruz es la Coordinadora para Catequismo de Necesidades
Especiales en la Iglesia de San Martin de Porres en Laredo, Texas. Como
la única parroquia en Laredo que ofrece un programa específicamente
dirigido a menores con necesidades especiales, Bertha y su equipo trabajan
incesantemente para traer a estos niños más cerca a Cristo. “Creemos que
en cierto punto tenemos una conexión con Dios. Eso creemos y somos
pecadores. Y estos niños no lo son. Estos niños son tan inocentes. Creo que
su conexión es mucho más grande que la de nosotros. Me encanta. Amo estar
involucrada en eso”, ella dice.
Actualmente, el programa sirve a 24 niños de diferentes parroquias en Laredo.
Bertha está orgullosa del progreso que han logrado los niños durante su tiempo en
el programa. Ella también indica que las catequistas que ella recluta deben tener
un llamado a este ministerio. “Tiene que ser que te guste lo que haces. Esa no es
tu profesión, es tu vocación trabajar con estos niños”, dice Bertha. “Cuando alguien
quiere ser voluntario, eso es lo que buscamos. ¿Es realmente algo que tienes en el
corazón o es algo que solo haces para vivir”?
Hay muchos retos que enfrentar cuando se trata de enseñar catequismo
a niños con necesidades especiales. Muchas parroquias no cuentan con
los recursos para comenzar y mantener clases de catecismo para niños
con necesidades especiales. “Nuestra población es muy pequeña. Es difícil
programar un clase solo para un menor y conseguir los maestros”, indica
Bertha. En caso de que así sea, los catequistas de necesidades especiales
entrenan a los padres para que éstos puedan enseñarles a sus hijos en casa.
Ellos proveen todos los materiales necesarios e instruyen a los padres a hacer
un programa para los menores de ser necesario. “Ya que las necesidades
especiales son muy especificas, lo hacemos caso por caso”. Además, Bertha
ayuda a preparar materiales para niños en programas de educación especial
de catecismo en Zapata, Hebbronville y Eagle Pass.
Bertha se encuentra buscando alentar a más coordinadores en las
parroquias para hacer saber a los padres sobre el programa ofrecido en San
Martin. Ella insiste que los padres con hijos con necesidades especiales deben
sentirse bienvenidos en la Iglesia Católica. “Sabemos que hay muchos niños
más por ahí que pueden estar teniendo esa relación con Dios si los padres
supieran del [programa de necesidades especiales]”, ella afirma. “Hemos
tenido juntas con los coordinadores. Les hemos pedido que no rechacen a
padres de familia. Toda su vida han sido rechazados. Estos padres solo quieren
que sus hijos tengan algo, que sean normales en algo. La Iglesia debería
ofrecerlo”.

With 30 years of experience as a catechist, Carmen
Suárez now serves as CCD Coordinator at Sacred
Heart Church in Eagle Pass, TX. She has been very
involved in her parish for many years. “I’ve always
been here as a volunteer. I helped the person who had
my job before with retreats and office work,” she says.
It’s a difficult process to find new people who want
to become catechists. Carmen has come to realize
that it’s not so easy to get people to commit and
take on the responsibility. “Having people make the
commitment is hard. They want to be catechists, but
they can’t always come,” she says. “For us, it’s difficult
to find someone right away who is qualified and who
is actually a catechist.” She also adds that it is more
difficult to find men to volunteer to be catechists, so
the majority of the catechists are women.
Carmen derives great joy from the work she does.
“I am happy to do what I do because at many times
throughout my life I’ve gone through some difficult
things in my personal life, and I wanted to give up.
Yet one way or the other, I’ve never left.” She is certain
that this is the job for her. “We are all here to serve
a purpose in life. I never worked while raising my
children, and here I am now working for the Church.
This is what God is asking me to help Him with.”
Being surrounded by kids is Carmen’s favorite part
of her job. “Our work is all for the kids. Children and
young adults are our future,” she says. “I love what
I do and I’m happy with the work we do. It is all for
God. You do not serve one particular person, you
serve God.”

antes con retiros y cosas de la oficina”, ella reitera.
El proceso para encontrar nuevas personas que se
quieran convertir en catequistas es riguroso. Carmen
se ha dado cuenta que es más difícil convencer a
nuevas personas a que acepten la responsabilidad
que conlleva. “Que hagan el compromiso es difícil.
Muchas veces quieren ser catequistas pero no
siempre pueden venir”, ella dice. “Para nosotros es
difícil al momento encontrar a alguien al momento
que esté capacitado y que sea catequista”. También
agrega que es un poco más difícil el conseguir
hombres que se conviertan en catequistas, la
mayoría siendo mujeres.
A Carmen le trae una alegría inmensa su trabajo.
“Estoy bien contenta de hacer lo que hago porque
varias veces yo he tenido mucho estrés en la casa
y decía, ya no puedo. Y de una manera u otra
me quedo todavía”. Ella está segura que estaba
destinada a estar en este trabajo. “Todos en la vida
estamos aquí por un propósito. Yo nunca trabajé
cuando estuve criando a mis hijos. Hasta ahora que
estoy viejita estoy trabajando. Esto es en lo que Dios
quiere que le ayude”.
El estar rodeada de niños es su parte favorita de
su trabajo. “Nuestro trabajo es de una manera u otra
llevarles algo a los niños. Los niños y los jóvenes son
el futuro de todos nosotros”, ella dice.
“Me gusta mucho esto y estoy contenta con lo que
hacemos. Es para Dios. No le sirves a una persona
en particular, le sirves a Dios”.

Johanna
Puente
As a parishioner at St. Frances Cabrini
Church since she was 10 years old,
Johanna Puente grew up immersed in the
faith. She remembers attending Mass
every Sunday and being involved in her
parish from an early age. Nowadays,
her role as Coordinator for Religious
Education at Mother Cabrini has her
involved in her parish in a different
capacity.
Although Johanna enjoys all aspects of
her work, being with the children is at the
top of the list. “My favorite part is working
with the children. It’s just something that makes
me happy. It fills my heart. I don’t have an official
class, but I do help the catechists with their children
and giving them ideas,” she says. “Teaching them in
their own way what it is to learn about the Church and
God is very rewarding.”
With many goals set in place for the kids under her
wing, Johanna values the family experience above all
else. “For me, [the main goal] would be to actually have
the family come to Mass.” She views the family as the
pillar of the child’s spiritual formation, and thus the
families of the children in CCD classes are required to
attend the Children’s Mass with them. “Sometimes at
the beginning we have parents who just come for their
child to do their first Communion; that’s their goal.
Our goal is to bring them back to the Church.” The
catechists feel blessed knowing that they are teaching
the children the sacraments, their prayers and the
foundation of Church, God and the Virgin Mary.
Johanna wants to encourage more people to become
catechists. Even though many might be afraid to take
on the responsibility, she feels this is a unique way
to participate in your parish. “This opportunity has
brought me closer to the Church and has made me a
better person overall,” she says. She wants people to
bring their unique talents and personality and teach
kids about the faith and all they have to offer to the
Church. “It’s a blessing to be part of the Church and
have received the opportunity is a big thing for me,”
Johanna says. “To be able to reach out to not only the
children, but also to give courage to the catechists to
come and do this volunteer work. It’s just a blessing for
everybody.”

Frances Cabrini desde que tenía
10 años, Johanna Puente creció
inmersa en la fe. Ella recuerda asistir a
Misa cada domingo y estar involucrada
en su parroquia desde muy temprana
edad. Hoy en día, su papel como
Coordinadora de Educación Religiosa ha
hecho que se involucre en su parroquia
de una manera diferente.
Aunque Johanna disfruta todos los
aspectos de su trabajo, estar con niños se
encuentra en al principio de la lista. “Mi parte
favorita es trabajar con los niños. Es simplemente
algo que me hace feliz. Llena mi corazón. No tengo
una clase oficial, pero si ayudo a las catequistas con sus
niños y dando ideas”, ella dice. “Enseñarles a su manera lo que hay que
aprender de la Iglesia y de Dios es muy gratificante”.
Con muchos objetivos programados para los menores bajo su manto,
Johanna valora la experiencia de la familia sobre todas las cosas. “Para
mi, es [el objetivo principal] lograr que la familia venga a Misa”. Ella ve a la
familia como el pilar de la formación espiritual, y es por eso que las familias
con niños en las clases de catequismo deben asistir a la Misa con sus
niños. “Algunas veces al principio tenemos a los padres que solo vienen
para que su hijo haga la Primera Comunión; ese es su objetivo. Nuestro
objetivo es traerlos de regreso a la Iglesia”. Las catequistas se sienten
bendecidas sabiendo que están enseñando a los niños los sacramentos,
sus oraciones y los fundamentos de la Iglesia, Dios y la Virgen María.
Johanna quiere alentar a más personas a convertirse en catequistas.
Aunque muchos puedan tener miedo de aceptar esa responsabilidad,
ella siente que es una manera única de participar en la parroquia. “Esta
oportunidad me ha puesto más cerca de la Iglesia y me ha hecho una
mejor persona en general”, ella dice. Ella quiere que la gente lleve sus
talentos únicos y personalidad y enseñe a los niños sobre la fe y todo
lo que tienen que ofrecer a la Iglesia. “Es una bendición se parte de la
Iglesia y haber recibido esta oportunidad es algo muy importante para
mi”, dice Johanna. “Poder alcanzar no solo a los menores, sino alentar
a las catequistas a venir y trabajar voluntariamente. Es simplemente una
bendición para todos”.

Palacios
For María Del Carmen Palacios, her work as
Coordinator for Catechism at Santa Monica Mission
in El Cenizo, TX, came to her through her children.
Her son and her daughter were both part of the youth
group in the mission and were CCD assistants at
the parish. For her, it was natural to follow in their
footsteps. “My children were already there, and they
were setting the example.”
Carmen enjoys spending time with the kids, since
they are very open about their thoughts and feelings.
She particularly enjoys the younger kids because of
their spontaneity. “The little ones absorb more about
the subjects we talk to them about,” she states. “For
example, if we are talking to them about God’s love,
they marvel at the things that they learn.” Carmen
is also infinitely grateful of having the opportunity
to serve the people in her community. Her family’s
support is key, and she realizes that she can count on
them to help her with all the events she participates in
and organizes. “God is asking us for help to catechize
the children and the youth,” she affirms. “We need
to realize that we have to help our parish in order to
evangelize others.”
Attending Mass before catechism, Carmen asks
God to guide her and all the other catechists that
assist her. She asks for patience and guidance to be
able to transmit peace and tranquility to the children
they teach. Carmen believes that “through us, the
catechists, the children take home the teachings that
Jesus wants them to know. That love and mercy from
Jesus is what we talk to them about.”
Her work is necessary, since it is very difficult
to recruit new people to make the commitment
to become catechists. Even though it’s a small
and humble mission, participation is great in the
catechism classes. There are 81 children and young
adults in the CCD program. “I have noticed that there
is a lot of poor people, and that they are the first ones
that want to help. There is always something. God
provides, He never forsakes us and is always there
helping us,” Carmen says.
Para María Del Carmen Palacios, el trabajo de
Coordinadora del Catecismo en la Misión de Santa Mónica
en El Cenizo, TX, llegó por medio de sus hijos. Tanto su
hijo como su hija estaban en el grupo de jóvenes de la
misión y fueron asistentes a las catequistas de la parroquia.
Para ella fue algo natural seguir en los pasos de ellos. “Mis
hijos ya estaban ahí y me estaban poniendo el ejemplo”.
Carmen disfruta de la convivencia con los niños, ya que
ellos son muy abiertos sobre lo que piensan y sienten. En
particular los más pequeños que son muy espontáneos.
“Los chiquitos absorben más sobre los temas de los
que estamos platicando,” ella asegura. “Por ejemplo,
si les estamos hablando del amor de Dios, ellos se
maravillan de las cosas de las que les estamos platicando”.
Carmen también está agradecida infinitamente de tener
la oportunidad de servir a la gente de su comunidad.
El apoyo de su familia es primordial y sabe que cuenta
con ellos para ayudarle con todos los eventos en los que
participa y organiza. “Dios nos está pidiendo ayuda para
poder catequizar a los niños y a los jóvenes”, ella afirma.
“Hay que concientizarnos que tenemos que ayudar a
nuestra parroquia para poder evangelizar a las personas”.
Al asistir a Misa antes del catecismo, Carmen pide
a Dios que la ilumine a ella y a todas las catequistas
que le ayudan. Ella pide paciencia y guianza para poder
transmitir paz y tranquilidad a los niños que enseñan.
Carmen cree que “por medio de nosotros como
catequistas, los niños se llevan a sus casas algo de las
enseñanzas que Jesús quiere que sepa cada quien. Algo
de ese amor y de esa misericordia de Jesús de la que
siempre les hablamos a ellos.”
Su trabajo es necesario ya que es difícil reclutar a
nuevas personas que quieran hacer el compromiso de
convertirse en catequistas. A pesar de ser una misión
pequeña y humilde, la participación es muy buena en el
catecismo. Hay 81 niños y jóvenes en el programa de la
misión. “Yo he comprobado que hay mucha gente que es
pobre y que ellos son los primeros que te quieren ayudar.
Siempre hay algo. Dios provee, Él nunca nos desampara
y siempre está ahí con nosotros ayudándonos”, dijo
Carmen.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
Sister María de Jesús Bolaños, HMRF has been in charge of CCD
classes at Our Lady of Lourdes Church throughout the three years
she has served in her apostolate in Zapata, TX. The members of her
congregation, Missionary Sisters of the Rosary of Fatima, are from
Mexico, and had previously visited Zapata on several occasions during
the most relevant seasons of the liturgical year, such as Lent, Easter,
Advent and Christmas. Since her arrival, Sister María de Jesús has
overseen spiritual formation for children and young adults in the only
parish in Zapata, as well as in its three corresponding missions in San
Ygnacio, Lopeño, and Falcon.
As Coordinator, Sister
María de Jesús has all
the catechists under
her tutelage. She is very
fond of all of them and
acknowledges all the
sacrifices they have to make
in order to be a part of the
team of catechists. “I am
grateful for the people that
work in this apostolate
because it’s an apostolate
that requires great
dedication”, Sister María de
Jesús says. She continues
her mission of making the community feel that Christ in the Eucharist
gives them the strength to follow His path.
There’s great need for people to become evangelizers. “We definitely
need more people to serve in this ministry,” she says. These are the people
who make a difference and that spend their time serving others. “We have
older ladies, over 70 years old, who are still catechists. The children inject
them with energy, and they feel very happy.
“Zapata has very humble people with great faith. There’s thirst and
hunger for God here,” Sister María de Jesús affirms. Through our active
ministries, the parish burns for Christ. “This is a community that loves
God and that tries to serve Him. And they are still searching for Him,
because faith is a journey,” Sister says.

La Hermana María de Jesús Bolaños, HMRF
ha estado a cargo de las clases de catecismo en la
parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes durante
los tres años que ha servido en su apostolado de
Zapata. Su congregación, las Hermanas Misioneras
del Rosario de Fátima, son originarias del Estado
de México y anteriormente han estado en Zapata en
varias ocasiones durante tiempos fuertes del Año
Litúrgico como Cuaresma, Adviento y Navidad. Desde
su llegada a Zapata, la Hermana María de Jesús ha
supervisado la formación espiritual de niños y jóvenes
en la única parroquia de Zapata y en las tres misiones
correspondientes en San Ygnacio, Lopeño y Falcón.
Como coordinadora, la Hermana María de Jesús
tiene a todas las catequistas bajo su tutela. Ella les
tiene mucho cariño por los sacrificios que hacen para
formar parte del equipo. “Agradezco a las personas que
trabajan en este apostolado porque es un apostolado
de mucha entrega”. Ella continúa su misión de que
la comunidad sienta que Jesús Eucaristía les da la
fortaleza para seguir en Su camino.
También nos platica que hay una necesidad muy
grande de más personas que sean evangelizadores.
“Definitivamente hace falta más gente que se entregue
a estar en ese servicio”, ella dice. Son aquellas
personas que marcan la diferencia y que entregan su
tiempo sirviendo a los demás. “Tenemos a señoras ya
mayores, de más de 70 años, que continúan como
catequistas. Los niños les inyectan energía y ellas se
sienten muy contentas”.
“En Zapata hay personas muy sencillas y con mucha
fe. Hay sed y hambre de Dios”, la Hermana María de
Jesús afirma. Por medio de todo el activismo en varios
ministerios, su parroquia se mantiene ardiente con el
fuego de Jesús. “Esta es una comunidad que ama a
Dios y trata de servir a Dios. Y está en su búsqueda
todavía, porque la fe es un camino”.

“PRAYER MUST BE FELT; IT MUST BE LIVED.
To our
beloved
mother
San Carlos Mission, located on the
outskirts of Laredo, has a devoted
parishioner who
is beloved by
everyone. Romelia
Urrutia, or Doña
Romita, as she
is affectionately
nicknamed, recently
celebrated 20 years
of being the main
volunteer leading
the recitation of
the rosaries at
the mission. During a special Mass worthy
of her great effort and dedication, she was
accompanied by family and friends who
celebrated her great work. Romelia insists that
God’s great love and the support from her
friends at the mission are what keep her active
and excited.
Since the age of 13, Romelia remembers praying the rosary. It
has been an experience that fills her with peace and tranquility.
“Prayer must be felt; it must be lived. It is the word of God,”
Romelia says. In recent years, she has headed and coordinated
the devotion of the 46 rosaries for Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Starting on October 27 and ending with the feast of our Blessed
Mother on December 12, the parishioners at San Carlos Mission
pray the rosary for 46 days straight. The 46 days symbolize the
46 stars on Our Lady of Guadalupe’s mantle.
As far as the preparation to pray the rosary, Romelia compares
it to preparing to host a party. “We must be ready to welcome
our Holy Mother. God gave her to us as our mother also. He was
not selfish,” Romelia affirms. “We are very happy because she
always holds us with her loving hand, illuminates us with her
light and covers us with her mantle.”
Romelia feels honored that God has chosen her as His
instrument. Her main purpose is to transmit faith and to preach
the word of God. “It’s a beautiful thing. I feel a great satisfaction
to be able to help other people. God has chosen us to follow
His path and He has given us His Holy Mother, Our Lady of
Guadalupe.” Romelia has always tried to help many people
through prayer. She assures offering the holy rosary is something
that comes naturally from her heart.

La Misión de San Carlos, localizada a las
afueras de Laredo, TX, cuenta con una
devota feligrés que es muy querida por
todos en la misión. Romelia Urrutia, o Doña
Romita, como es afectuosamente apodada,
celebró 20 años de ser la voluntaria principal
de los rosarios de la misión. En una Misa
especial y digna de su gran esfuerzo y
dedicación, ella fue acompañada por familia
y amigos que festejaron su gran labor.
Romelia insiste que es el gran amor de Dios y
el apoyo de parte de sus amigas en la misión
lo que la mantiene activa y entusiasmada.
Desde que tenía 13 años, Romelia recuerda rezar el
rosario. Ha sido una experiencia que la llena de paz y
tranquilidad. “La oración se debe de sentir, se debe de vivir.
Es la palabra de Dios”, dice Romelia. En años recientes, ella
ha dirigido y coordinado la devoción de los 46 rosarios a
la Virgen de Guadalupe. Comenzando el 27 de octubre y
culminando con el festejo de la Virgen el 12 de diciembre,

46 días seguidos. Los 46 días simbolizan las 46 estrellas del
santo manto de la Virgen de Guadalupe.
En cuanto a la preparación para rezar el rosario, Romelia
lo compara con prepararse para ser anfitrión de una fiesta.
“Así nos debemos preparar para recibir a nuestra Madre
Santísima. Dios nos la dio por madre a nosotros también.
Él no fue egoísta”, Romelia afirma. “Nosotros estamos bien
As a devoted wife and mother of three, Romelia has had to
sacrifice time with her family on many occasions to pray the
daily rosary. However, she knows she has the support of her
family, and that they know the importance of the work she is
doing. Romelia also knows that she holds a very special place
in the hearts of all the parishioners at the mission. “Everyone
loves me very much. They always ask about me when I can’t
make it to Mass or the rosaries”, she states.
The friendships she has cultivated through the offering of
the rosary have been wonderful and are another reason why
Romelia is extremely grateful. “I thank God for this beautiful
gift He has given me in my friends. We love each other so
much. And it is all thanks to praying the rosary together,”
she says. “It is something wonderful. God is great and very
merciful with us, with my friends. I thank God and the Virgin
for this friendship. God unites us. When He sees that we are
people of faith, He brings us together. He unites us so we can
follow in His footsteps.”
One of the main reasons why Romelia is so devoted to the
Virgin Mary is because she has always helped her and her
family during sickness and other difficult times. Romelia
prays incessantly to our Blessed Mother and laments that
people do not respect her as Jesus’ mother, and as our own
mother. “Many people say the Virgin had many children,
because we are all her children. That is how I see it. I wish
everyone would understand that and believe in our Holy
Mother,” Romelia says. “Just like we wouldn’t like people
disrespecting our mother, God feels the same way. He wants
us to respect His mother. She brings us closer to Him.”
Romelia is convinced the rosary is very powerful.
Regardless of the obstacles or the difficulties, she is not
worried, because she knows the reward at the end will make
everything worth it. “When we pray, I believe that angels
descend from heaven to be amongst us. When we ask for
special intentions, they come down and take our petitions to
God. I truly believe that.” Romelia feels at home during Mass.
“If it was for me, I would be every day at the Church. I feel so
peaceful,” she says.

Romelia se siente honrada que Dios la haya escogido para
ser su instrumento. Su propósito principal es transmitir la fe

una satisfacción muy grande al poder hacer algo para ayudar
a la gente. Dios nos ha escogido para seguir su camino y
nos ha dado a nuestra Madre Santísima la Virgen María de
Guadalupe.” Romelia siempre ha tratado de ayudar a mucha
gente por medio de la oración. Ella asegura que le nace de
corazón ofrecer el Santo Rosario.
Como devota esposa y madre de tres hijos, Romelia
ha tenido que sacrificar tiempo con su familia en muchas
ocasiones para asistir a todos los rosarios de diario. Sin
embargo, ella sabe que cuenta con el apoyo de su familia
y que ellos saben la importancia del trabajo que ella está
haciendo. Romelia también sabe que tiene un lugar muy
especial en los corazones de los feligreses de la misión. “Toda
la gente me quiere mucho. Siempre preguntan por mi cuando
no puedo venir a Misa o a los rosarios”, ella asegura.
Las amistades que ha forjado mediante la ofrenda de los
rosarios han sido maravillosas y son otra razón por la que
Romelia está muy agradecida. “Yo le doy gracias a Dios por
ese regalo tan hermoso que me ha dado en mis amigas. Nos
queremos tanto. Y es a través del rosario”, ella dice. “Es algo
maravilloso. Dios es bien lindo y bien misericordioso con
nosotros, con mis amigas. Yo le doy a Diosito y a la Virgen
gracias por esta amistad. Dios nos une. Cuando Él sabe que
las personas son personas de fe, Él nos va juntando. Nos va
uniendo para seguir su camino”.
Uno de los motivos principales por los que Romelia tiene
tal devoción a la Virgen de Guadalupe, es por que ella
siempre le ha ayudado a ella y a su familia cuando pasan por
enfermedades y otros momentos difíciles. Romelia le reza
mucho a la Santísima Madre y lamenta que mucha gente no
le da el respeto que ella merece como la madre de Jesús y
por extensión la de nosotros. “Mucha gente dice que la Virgen
tuvo muchos hijos, porque los hijos somos todos nosotros.
Así lo entiendo yo. Ojalá que toda la gente entendiera todo
eso y creyera en la Virgen”, dice Romelia. “Así como a todos
nosotros no nos gustaría que nos despreciaran a nuestra
madre, así es Diosito. Él quiere que respetemos a su madre.
Ella nos ayuda a que nos acerquemos a su hijo.”
Romelia está convencida que el rosario es muy poderoso.
Sin importar los obstáculos o las dificultades, ella no se
preocupa ya que sabe que la recompensa final hará que
todo valga la pena. “Cuando rezamos, yo digo que vienen los
ángeles y nos acompañan. Cuando uno pedimos, ellos vienen y
le llevan nuestras peticiones a Dios. Así lo creo y así lo siento.”
Ella se siente en casa cuando asiste a Misa. “Si por mi fuera,
yo quisiera estar todos los días en la Iglesia. Yo me siento tan
en paz”, ella asegura.

The Diocese of Laredo hosted
its annual Catholic Conference on
Saturday, March 19, 2016. In honor
of the Year of Mercy, the conference
was titled “Face of Mercy.” Tim Staples
from Catholic Answers was the
keynote speaker, and other speakers
included Sister Guadalupe Ramírez,
Father Francisco Quiroz and Alberto
Mata. These Catholic personalities
have diverse specialties and a breadth
of knowledge in their given field.
Once again, our diocesan family has
demonstrated that we are always in
search of spiritual nourishment. With
overwhelming attendance of more
than 800 people, this retreat drew
people from all seven counties in the
Diocese of Laredo.

los otros oradores fueron la Hermana
Guadalupe Ramírez, el Padre Francisco
Quiroz y Alberto Mata. Este grupo de

Owning our faith
As Catholics, defending and proclaiming our faith is necessary
in this increasingly cynical world. For Tim Staples, Director of
Apologetics and Evangelization at Catholic Answers Inc., this is
a commonplace occurrence. As a regular guest on the popular
radio program and podcast “Catholic Answers Live,” and as a
highly sought-after speaker at Catholic events and conferences,
Tim remains one of the most recognizable faces in Catholic
apologetics. This year, he was the keynote speaker at the
Diocese of Laredo’s Catholic Conference, “Face of Mercy.” He sat
down for an exclusive interview to talk to us about his conversion
to Catholicism, his journey as an apologist and the overall mission
of his apostolate.
Tim’s upbringing was not conducive to his current life’s work. He was brought up
as a Southern Baptist and in an environment that was strongly anti-Catholic. Eventually finding his way to the Catholic Church, he can appreciate the unique gifts that
converts bring to the Church. “I think [converts] bring zeal. There’s no doubt we
have a fervency that sometimes helps the cradle Catholics, but, at the same time, the
cradle Catholics bring stability, a rock-solid immovability that I don’t have. We need
each other. I think that’s the message, hopefully, that converts are bringing,” he said.
From the time he joined Catholic Answers, the largest Catholic apologetics organization in North America, to present day, Tim has learned that it’s not the easiest job.
“Over the years, you get stumped from time to time. People ask you questions about

of his approach towards discussing
all issues with respect and facts. He
emphasizes the importance to remember that “you don’t have all the answers
and neither do I. So we’re all in this
thing together and we want to learn
more ... I’m learning, too. Come learn
with me. Let’s learn together. I think
that’s the way you can bring people in,”
he said. He cites Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium as
an inspiration for Catholics to come
up with new and exciting ways to
evangelize. Referencing paragraph
132, “Our Holy Father calls for what
he calls a creative apologetics, that
gives credence to the message of the
Gospel. He’s calling us. I’d never heard
it termed that way before, ‘a creative
apologetics.’ What he’s saying to us is
we’ve got to get creative. Don’t keep
the message in the same box that your
parents gave it to you in. You’ve got to
open the box, you’ve got to experience
it, and then put it in a new box to give
it to someone else,” Tim explained.
While continuing his mission of
bringing truth and light to those
searching for it, Tim finds it imperative
to continue the dialogue amongst our
fellow Catholics. One element that he
finds is sorely lacking in Catholic culture is taking the time to sit down and
share stories and testimonies about our
faith. Also, energizing and appealing to
our youth is an essential part of growing in the faith. “We’re on a journey
together. Let’s get to the truth together,”
Tim said.

de cosas de las que nunca había oído hablar. Una gran cantidad de la experiencia

original apologética, que da credibilidad al mensaje del Evangelio. Nos está llamando.

diciendo es que nosotros tenemos que ser creativos. No guardar el mensaje en la
misma caja en la que nuestros padres nos lo dieron. Tenemos que abrir la caja, hay que
experimentar, y luego ponerlo en una nueva caja para dar a otra persona”.
Mientras continúa su misión de llevar la verdad y la luz a aquellos en busca de ella,
a Tim le resulta imprescindible continuar el diálogo entre hermanos católicos. Un
elemento que él piensa hace tanta falta en la cultura católica es tomarse el tiempo para
sentarse y compartir historias y testimonios acerca de la fe. Además, energizarnos y
apelar a nuestra juventud es una parte esencial del crecimiento en la fe. “Estamos en
este viaje juntos. Vamos a llegar a la verdad juntos”, afirma Tim.

her to preach His message to all the
people she finds along the way. On
Saturday, March 19, she was one
of the distinguished speakers at the
Diocese of Laredo’s annual Catholic
Conference, “Face of Mercy.” Her
presentation came from a collection
of homilies by Pope Francis. She
talked to us about her life and her
dedication to share the love and the
word of God.
At the age of 16, Sister Guadalupe attended a
retreat hosted by the Missionary Catechists of Divine Providence. She was captivated by what she
learned there, finding that every person is special
and has their own dignity in God’s eyes, as well as
gifts and talents that God has blessed us with to
develop and share with others. “I always wanted
to serve God and to do something in this world
to help other people,” she said. After the retreat,
she remained with the idea that maybe God was
calling her. Nonetheless, she thought to herself,

La Hermana Guadalupe Ramírez, MCDP, es profesora de
Teología en el Colegio Católico México-Americano en San
Antonio. Dios la ha llamado para que divulgue su mensaje
a todas las personas que encuentra en su camino. El
pasado sábado 19 de marzo, ella fue una de las distinguidas
ponentes para la Conferencia Católica de la Diócesis de
Laredo, “Rostro de la Misericordia”. Su presentación proviene
de una recopilación de homilías del Papa Francisco. Ella nos
platicó sobre su vida y su dedicación a compartir el amor y la
palabra de Dios.
A los 16 años, la Hermana Guadalupe asistió a un retiro de las Hermanas
Misioneras Catequistas de la Divina Providencia. Ella fue cautivada por lo que
aprendió ahí, al aprender que cada persona es especial y tiene su dignidad ante
Dios y dones y talentos que Dios nos da para desarrollarlos y compartirlos con
otros. “Yo siempre quise servir a Dios y hacer algo en el mundo para ayudar a
otra gente”, afirmó. Después del retiro, se quedó con la idea de que quizá Dios
la estaba llamando. Sin embargo, ella pensaba asimisma “yo no soy buena, yo

year later, she entered St. Andrew’s Convent in San Antonio, where she attended
high school. She earned a bachelor’s degree in religious studies from Our Lady
of the Lake University in San Antonio, a master’s degree in religious studies from
Incarnate Word University in San Antonio and a doctor in ministry from The
Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Sister Guadalupe showed her
perseverance when receiving her doctoral degree at the age of 60, serving as an
example that anything can be accomplished through persistence and dedication.
The impact her congregation has had in promoting and elevating Hispanics
has motivated Sister Guadalupe to continue her task of preaching the Gospel.
“We are here to serve everyone, but my congregation has a special gift for Hispanics,” she said. She grew up during a time when there was a lot of prejudice
and racism against Hispanics, which made her develop low self-esteem. One of
the people who greatly impacted her life was her parish priest, who set a great
example of always fighting for the dignity of others, Hispanics in particular.
Working with the youth has also become a priority for Sister Guadalupe
because she can see they have so much untapped potential. “I think that we
still have to invest more resources in our youth formation. If we do not guide
them, if we don’t find ways to help them right now during their tender years,
when they can still be influenced by so many other things, they will not be
able to stay faithful to Christ or know that God loves them,” she explained.
“Young people do not feel like they are worth anything or that they have any
abilities. We have not embraced them with that peace, that strength that we
have as Catholics. The most important thing is staying strong in the faith, getting to know Christ and remaining faithful.”
Despite being a woman who holds many important titles, such as doctor,
professor and religious, the one she is most proud of is catechist. As a bilingual and bicultural religious woman, Sister Guadalupe has shown us that
there are no limits when it comes to sharing our passion and love for Jesus
Christ. Regardless of our profession, we must never forget that our responsibility as good Catholics is to share our gifts with others, always in the name
of God and His holy Church.

El impacto que su congregación ha tenido en
difundir y elevar a los hispanos, ha motivado a
la Hermana Guadalupe a continuar su tarea de
predicar el Evangelio. “Nosotros estamos para
servir a todos, pero en mi congregación tenemos
un don especial para los hispanos”. Ella creció
en una época cuando había mucho prejuicio
y racismo contra los hispanos, lo que la llevó
a desarrollar un bajo autoestima. Una de las
personas que marcó su vida fue el párroco de
su iglesia, ya que siempre puso un buen ejemplo
al luchar por la dignidad de los demás, pero en
particular de los hispanos.
Trabajar con la juventud también es una
prioridad de la Hermana Guadalupe, ya que
ve todo el potencial que tienen. “Yo pienso que
todavía tenemos que poner muchos más recursos
en la formación de los jóvenes. Si no les damos
guía, si no tenemos maneras de ayudarlos ahorita
en sus años muy tiernos, donde todavía pueden
ser influidos por muchas otras cosas y presiones,
no van a poder ser fieles a Cristo ni saber que
Dios los ama”, asegura la Hermana Guadalupe.
“Los jóvenes no se sienten que valen algo o
que tiene capacidades. No los hemos abrazado
con esa paz, con esa fuerza que tenemos como
Católicos. Lo más importante es permanecer en
la fe, conocer a Cristo y seguir fiel”.
A pesar de ser una mujer con títulos
importantes como doctora, profesora y religiosa,
el que más le enorgullece es catequista. Como
una religiosa bilingüe y bicultural, la Hermana
Guadalupe nos demuestra que no hay límites
cuando se trata de compartir nuestra pasión
y amor por Jesucristo. Sea cual sea nuestra
profesión, nunca debemos olvidar que nuestra
responsabilidad como buenos Católicos el
compartir nuestros dones con los demás, siempre
a la disposición de Dios y de Su Santa Iglesia.

The Diocese of Laredo participated in
Wear Blue Day in observance of Child Abuse
Prevention Month. Diocesan employees,
Catholic schools and parish staff wore blue
clothing/ribbons to show their support for this
worthy cause.
We must continue to fight for children who
are abused and neglected. Kids cannot defend
themselves; they are not able to stand up for
themselves and say no. We all deserve dignity,
respect and love.
Recognition Dinner
The 7th annual Catholic Social Services Recognition Dinner was held at
the IBC Annex Ballroom. The honorees this year were Dr. Joaquín Cigarroa
and Mrs. Barbara Cigarroa and Mayor Pete Sáenz and Mrs. Minerva Sáenz.
Thank you to the Cigarroa and Sáenz families for their great contributions
to the community. “We continue to work together to help and uplift people in

Mass commemorated the fallen
heroes who lost their lives while
serving their country in the armed
forces. Fr. Iden Bello celebrated Mass
and acknowledged the sacrifices
made by all the veterans present, and
those who have passed away.
The ceremony included the
traditional laying of the wreath, 21-gun salute, playing of “Taps,” moment
of silence and benediction. Also, there was the unveiling of the Veterans
Monument, generously donated by Dr. Joaquín Cigarroa.

Ordination Mass
Father José Guadalupe Cadena walked out
of San Agustín Cathedral as a newly ordained
diocesan priest on Saturday, May 28, 2016. Fr.
Joe is excited to spend the summer in Laredo,
before returning to Mundelein Seminary to
continue his studies.
After a beautiful and emotional Ordination
Mass, Fr. Joe celebrated with an intimate
luncheon at the Cathedral’s parish hall, where
he greeted and blessed attendees. The Diocese
of Laredo is blessed. Thank you for all your
prayers and continued support for vocations in
the Diocese of Laredo.

mayo de 2016. El Padre Joe continuará sus
estudios en el Seminario de Mundelein por
otro año antes de regresar a su nuevo hogar, la
Diócesis de Laredo.
Después de una hermosa misa de ordenación,
el Padre Joe celebró con un almuerzo íntimo en
el salón parroquial de la Catedral, donde saludó
y bendijo a los asistentes. La Diócesis de Laredo
está bendecida. Gracias por todas sus oraciones
y apoyo a las vocaciones en la Diócesis de
Laredo.
Blue Mass
On Monday, May 16, 2016, the
Diocese of Laredo hosted the Blue
Mass at San Agustín Cathedral. The
Blue Mass is an annual celebration
that honors the brave men and women
in law enforcement for their selfless
work and commitment to keeping the
community safe.
Bishop James A. Tamayo presided
over the Mass and thanked everyone
in attendance for their service.
Representatives from all major law
enforcement agencies were present, and they offered their
prayers for the continued blessings bestowed upon them.
Misa Azul
El lunes 16 de mayo de 2016, la
Diócesis de Laredo celebró la Misa Azul en
la Catedral de San Agustín. La Misa Azul es
una celebración anual que rinde homenaje a
los hombres y mujeres valientes en fuerzas
del orden por su trabajo desinteresado y
su compromiso de mantener la comunidad
segura.
El Señor Obispo Jaime A. Tamayo
presidió la Misa y dio las gracias a
todos los asistentes por su servicio. Los
representantes de las principales fuerzas de
la ley estuvieron presentes, y ofrecieron sus oraciones por las
bendiciones continuas que han recibido.

New interpretations of what is considered
A HUMAN RIGHT
THE BASICS
According to the United Nations’ Office of
the High Commissioner for Human Rights,
human rights are rights inherent to all human beings “whatever our nationality, place
of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin,
color, religion, language or any other status.”
Human rights are universal and inalienable
(which means they can only be taken away in
specific situations according to due process).
Furthermore, every human being is equally
entitled to his or her human rights without
discrimination, for, according to Article 1 of
the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,
“all human beings are born free and equal in
dignity and rights.”
SO WHAT’S THE ISSUE?
The final report of the Extraordinary Synod of
Bishops points to the root problem:
“… equal consideration needs to be given
to the growing danger represented by a
troubling individualism which deforms
family bonds and ends up considering each
component of the family as an isolated unit,
leading, in some cases, to the idea that a
person is formed according to one’s own
desires, which are considered absolute.” (5)

Following the synod
on Nov. 25, 2014, Pope
Francis addressed both the
European Parliament and
the Council of Europe. In
his speech to the European
Parliament, Pope Francis
both echoed and elaborated
upon what the Extraordinary Synod was referring
to in both its preparatory
document and final report:
“Today there is a tendency
to claim ever broader
individual rights … The
essential and complementary concept of duty no
longer seems to be linked
to such a concept of rights. As a result, the
rights of the individual are upheld, without
regard for the fact that each human being is
part of a social context wherein his or her
rights and duties are bound up with those
of others and with the common good of
society itself.”
Luego del sínodo del 25 de noviembre
de 2014, el Papa Francisco se dirigió
tanto el Parlamento Europeo como al
Consejo Europeo. En su discurso ante el
Parlamento Europeo, El Papa Francisco
hizo eco y elaboró sobre lo dicho en el
Sínodo Extraordinario refiriéndose tanto a
su documento preparatorio como al informe
final:
Pope Francis then told the Council of
Europe:
It also needs to be kept in mind that apart
from the pursuit of truth, each individual
becomes the criterion for measuring himself
and his own actions. The way is thus
opened to a subjectivistic assertion of rights,
so that the concept of human rights, which
has an intrinsically universal import, is
replaced by an individualistic conception of
rights. This … favors that globalization of
indifference born of selfishness.
In other words, as in the case of the discussion on the culture of non-commitment, excessive individualism is the primary driving
force behind this concern. Again, excessive
individualism is a mind-set that asserts the
prime duty of the individual is to make the
most of one’s own life, rather than contribute
to the good of others. It is a mind-set that
undermines marriage, with its invitation to
total self-giving reciprocity, and creates, as the
synod reminds us, “a mentality against having children.”
THE LINK TO RELATIVISM
The phenomenon of excessive individualism can be linked to the philosophy
of relativism, which dominates much of
Western culture. The essence of relativism
is that points of view have no absolute truth
or validity – only relative, subjective value.
This means that all truth is “relative” to the
individual.
The problem is that relativism is, in fact, a
philosophy that is predicated on the denial of
objective truth, or at least our ability to know
objective truth – which amounts to the denial
of the revealed truth of God, of faith in the
God of revelation and, ultimately, of God.
It also stands in stark contradiction to, and
finally renders meaningless, any notion of the
universality and inalienable nature of human
rights. In short, relativism is about what we,
as individuals, want. It leaves us susceptible
to false notions such as
•w
hatever is legal is moral;
• feelings should trump reason when it
comes to moral decision-making;
• morality consists of whatever is acceptable
to the culture at a given time; and
•m
ight makes right.
Also, in such a system, pragmatism generally gains influence. Pragmatism holds that
whatever works for the individual is true.
In other words, we cannot know whether
something is true or not until we do it and
see if it works. Naturally, a mind-set of “the
ends justify the means” generally accompanies relativism and pragmatism – though the
ends are constantly changing.
This reality of constantly changing ends
is what is so problematic about relativism.
When our ultimate standard and guide of
conduct is desire cut off from the transcendent, we are ultimately left with no standard
at all because human, earthly desires can
change and be disordered.

De acuerdo con la Oficina del Alto
Comisionado para los Derechos Humanos de
las Naciones Unidas, los derechos humanos
son derechos inherentes a todos los seres
humanos sin “distinción alguna de nacionalidad,
lugar de residencia, sexo, origen nacional
o étnico, color, religión, lengua o cualquier
otra condición”. Los derechos humanos son
universales e inalienables (lo que significa
que sólo pueden ser limitados en situaciones
específicas de acuerdo con el debido proceso).
Por otra parte, cada ser humano tiene el
mismo derecho a sus derechos humanos sin
discriminación, ya que, según el artículo 1 de la
Declaración Universal de Derechos Humanos,
“todos los seres humanos nacen libres e
iguales en dignidad y derechos”.
ENTONCES, ¿CUÁL ES EL
PROBLEMA?
El informe final del Sínodo Extraordinario de
los Obispos apunta a la raíz del problema:
“Hoy en día existe una tendencia a
reclamar derechos individuales cada vez
más amplios... El concepto esencial y
complementario del deber ya no parece estar
ligado a un concepto del derecho como tal.
Como resultado de ello, los derechos de las
personas son respetados, sin tener en cuenta
el hecho de que cada ser humano es parte
de un contexto social en el que sus derechos
y obligaciones están ligados al de los demás
y con el bien común de la sociedad misma”.
Luego el Papa Francisco dijo al Consejo
Europeo:
También hay que tener en cuenta que, aparte
de la búsqueda de la verdad, cada individuo
se convierte en el criterio para la medición
de sí mismo y de sus propias acciones.
El camino se abre así a una afirmación
subjetivista de los derechos, por lo que el
concepto de derechos humanos, que tiene
una importación universal por naturaleza, se
sustituye por una concepción individualista
de los derechos. Esto ... favorece a la
globalización de la indiferencia nacida del
egoísmo.
En otras palabras, como en el caso de la
discusión del mes pasado en la cultura del
no-compromiso, el excesivo individualismo
es la fuerza impulsora principal detrás de
esta preocupación. Una vez más, un excesivo
individualismo es una mentalidad que afirma
que el primer deber del individuo es sacar el
mayor provecho personal de la propia vida,
en lugar de contribuir al bien de los demás. Es
una mentalidad que socava el matrimonio, con
su invitación a la reciprocidad total del don de
sí, y crea, como el Sínodo nos recuerda, “una
mentalidad contraria a tener hijos”.
EL ENLACE CON EL RELATIVISMO
El fenómeno del individualismo excesivo
puede estar vinculado a la filosofía del
relativismo, que domina gran parte de la
cultura occidental. La esencia del relativismo
es que los puntos de vista no tienen la verdad
absoluta son de valor relativo, y de validez sólo
subjetiva. Esto significa que toda verdad es
“relativa” al individuo.
El problema es que el relativismo es,
de hecho, una filosofía que se basa en la
negación de la verdad objetiva, o al menos
niega nuestra capacidad de conocer la verdad,
lo que equivale a la negación de la verdad
revelada de Dios, de la fe en el Dios de la
revelación y, en última instancia, de Dios.
También se encuentra en total contradicción
con cualquier noción de la universalidad y
la inalienabilidad de los derechos humanos
privándoles finalmente de sentido. En
resumen, el relativismo se trata de lo que
nosotros, como individuos, queremos. Nos
deja susceptibles a falsas nociones tales
como:
• todo lo que es legal es moral;
• los sentimientos deben preceder a la
razón cuando se trata de toma de decisiones
morales;
• la moralidad consiste en todo lo que es
aceptable para la cultura en un momento
dado; y
• tener la razón por la fuerza.
Además, en un sistema de este tipo, el
pragmatismo generalmente gana influencia.
El pragmatismo sostiene que lo que funciona
para el individuo es cierto. En otras palabras,
no podemos saber si algo es verdadero o no
hasta que lo hacemos y vemos si funciona.
Naturalmente, una mentalidad de “el fin
justifica los medios” acompaña generalmente
al relativismo y al pragmatismo - aunque los
extremos están cambiando constantemente.
Esta realidad de extremos que cambian
constantemente es lo que es tan problemático
al relativismo. Cuando nuestra última y
suprema norma y guía de conducta es el
deseo separado de lo trascendente, nos
encontramos en última instancia sin ningún
estándar, porque los deseos mundanos
de la humanidad, pueden cambiar y estar
desorganizados.
