Abril - Mayo 2016 Página 31 Eficiencia Energética y Smart Cities PUBLICACIONES CIENTÍFICAS Occupant Centered Lighting Control: A user study on balancing comfort, acceptance, and energy consumption Publicada en ScienceDirect_Publications, 27/05/2016. The energy savings of buildings promised by automatic control systems are often ineffective due to occupants who may not use the features of the system to the full potential at best, or deactivate the system at worst. Therefore, systems that adapt to the occupant over time without compromising his/her comfort are needed. We have previously introduced the occupant centered lighting control (OCC) approach, where the set-points are automatically derived through interaction with the occupant, and demonstrated the energy savings potential. In this work, we present a user study on OCC in a 12-week experiment under real-world conditions in six offices with ten participants. We find generally good user satisfaction, except for those users who deem automatic lighting conrol unimportant. ver más... The role of big data in smart city Publicada en ScienceDirect_Publications, 27/05/2016. The expansion of big data and the evolution of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have played an important role in the feasibility of smart city initiatives. Big data offer the potential for cities to obtain valuable insights from a large amount of data collected through various sources, and the IoT allows the integration of sensors, radio-frequency identification, and Bluetooth in the real-world environment using highly networked services. The combination of the IoT and big data is an unexplored research area that has brought new and interesting challenges for achieving the goal of future smart cities. These new challenges focus primarily on problems related to business and technology that enable cities to actualize the vision, principles, and requirements of the applications of smart cities by realizing the main smart environment characteristics. In this paper, we describe the state-of-the-art communication technologies and smart-based applications used within the context of smart cities. The visions of big data analytics to support smart cities are discussed by focusing on how big data can fundamentally change urban populations at different levels. ver más... Automated blinds with light feedback to increase occupant satisfaction and energy saving Publicada en ScienceDirect_Publications, 18/05/2016. With the increase of building automation in the work environment, there is a risk that occupants lose their sense of control when decisions on environmental aspects such as temperature, electric lighting, and daylight are made by technology. This paper reports two experiments in which we investigated the effect of the level automation and the type of system expressiveness on users' satisfaction with an automated blinds system installed on a virtual window. ver más... Designing smart homes dedicated to disabled people using modular Discrete Controller Synthesis Publicada en ScienceDirect_Publications_FEB 2014, 18/05/2016. In the domain of smart homes dedicated to disabled people, especially cognitively impaired people, providing an adequate assistance to allow the users to carry out their activities of daily living is the main challenge tackled by many contributions. New assistive technologies based on the concept of Ambient Intelligence have been developed to alleviate the effects of cognitive decline, however, the reliability of such propositions is seldom discussed while the smart home environment — consisting of several electronic or mechanic components — is usually not reliable. ver más... Detecting and exploring deviating behaviour of smart home residents Publicada en ScienceDirect_Publications, 18/05/2016. A system for detecting deviating human behaviour in a smart home environment is the long-term goal of this work. Clearly, such systems will be very important in ambient assisted living services. A new approach to modelling human behaviour patterns is suggested in this paper. The approach reveals promising results in unsupervised modelling of human behaviour and detection of deviations by using such a model. Human behaviour/activity in a short time interval is represented in a novel fashion by responses of simple non-intrusive sensors. ver más... Rule-based system to detect energy efficiency anomalies in smart buildings, a data mining approach Publicada en ScienceDirect_Publications, 18/05/2016. The rapidly growing world energy use already has concerns over the exhaustion of energy resources and heavy environmental impacts. As a result of these concerns, a trend of green and smart cities has been increasing. To respond to this increasing trend of smart cities with buildings every time more complex, in this paper we have proposed a new method to solve energy inefficiencies detection problem in smart buildings. This solution is based on a rule-based system developed through data mining techniques and applying the knowledge of energy efficiency experts. ver más... The Intelligenter Method (II) for “smarter” urban policy-making and regulation drafting Publicada en ScienceDirect_Publications, 18/05/2016. The Intelligenter Method is based on the innovative idea of collaborations discovery in urban systems. The Intelligenter Method shows that what makes an urban project, masterplan, policy, or regulation smart is not its sophisticated architecture and master planning, nor complexity and legal engineering in a technological environment, but rather qualitative and quantitative collaborations that urban subsystems being studied can establish with related subsystems and stakeholders. Furthermore, this safeguards sustainability while promoting urban development and improving resilience. This Method is also applicable to intelligenter urban planning and city projects. This first part of the methodology is published in a separate paper in this Cities issue with the title “The Intelligenter Method (I) for making ‘smarter’ city projects and plans”. ver más...
