I muse about how many cups of coffee that were not drank, meat that are as hard as rock in
the freezer, sweets that can wait for the next Halloween, all because you gave them away
for Lent.
Our Lenten discipline brings us close to the most holy days of the year. The Holy Week invites us to be prepared to celebrate worthily Christ’s Paschal Mystery. In this issue, I will
give the last two notes Fr. Dwight advises us to do when we commit the same sins.
These two last things are:
“11. Don’t give up. Whatever you do, don’t give up. Don’t tell yourself that your sin is not a sin. That
way destruction lies. Instead face up to the sin ad keep up with the struggle. It’s the beautiful struggle! Don’t
give up!
12. Remember God is on your side. Too many Catholics are on some kind of weird guilt trip as if God is
in the business of watching people so he can give them a smack when they get out of line. Believe me, God is in
exactly the opposite business. ‘God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world
through him might be saved.’ (Jn 3:17) Will you try to get it into your head that God is looking for every opportunity to forgive you-not for every opportunity to condemn you? He is not willing for any perish. Take heart.”
I shared to you Fr. Dwight’s pieces of advice because I thought he gave us solid explanations of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and down-to-earth explanations and examples on how we approach the sacrament. I
hope that through this you were inspired to take to heart the invitation to change.

Palm Sunday and The Sacred Triduum. This Sunday is Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion. This celebration commemorates the Jesus triumphal entry to Jerusalem. This is not the first time Jesus entered Jerusalem.
But this is the time when he entered Jerusalem for the cleansing of Israel. This includes his arrest. The people
who welcomed him with palm branches singing hosannas are more or less the same people who cried out,
‘Crucify Him!’
In this remembrance, we cry out “Praise to God, who masterfully planned our salvation.” God’s folly is
wiser than man’s wisdom (1 Cor 1:25).
The Scared Triduum starts on the eve of Holy Thursday and ends on the Easter Vigil celebration. The
Holy Thursday celebration is the commemoration of the Mandatum. Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and
commanded them to love one another, thus the Mandatum. The celebration also commemorates the institution of
the Holy Eucharist. The Most Blessed Sacrament will be reposed in the altar of reposition and will be available
for adoration until midnight. And then the Most Blessed Sacrament will be kept in a place away from people’s
view until the evening of the Vigil of Christ’s resurrection.
We celebrate Mass every day throughout the year except on Good Friday. On
this holy day, we follow the steps of Christ carrying the Cross to the Mount of skulls.
The Way of the Cross is traditionally done at noon. And then at 3:00 o’clock, we do
the Celebration of the Word and the Veneration of the Cross.
I invite all of you to allow yourselves to enter into the mystery of Christ’s passion, death and resurrection. Let us celebrate the liturgy with full attention and involvement.

"11. No te rindas.
No te rindas!

Do you enjoy sharing your Catholic faith & family traditions, and learning about new cultures? Ivan (age 17 in May) is a Catholic AFS Exchange Student from Bosnia, where he attends a Catholic high school and attends Mass weekly with his family. He is the
recipient of a very competitive exchange program scholarship, offered by the US Department of State to students from predominantly
Muslim countries. Academic achievement, character, knowledge of home country, and leadership are a focus of the scholarship. Ivan
will be in the US for the coming school year, has full medical insurance, and provides for his personal expenses and school/sports fees.
AFS welcomes all loving families (empty nesters, active retirees, families with children of any age) to apply as host families.
Ivan is active in his Catholic high school and has excellent grades. His favorite hobby is photographing nature, and he enjoys gatherings with his extended family. He is interested in watching sports, running, playing board games, bicycling, tennis, volunteering, and
reading. At home he is responsible for household chores, mowing the lawn, and cleaning his room. He lives with his parents and older
sister (age 28). Ivan is proficient in English and also speaks German. He is described by his teachers as having an excellent ability to
interact with others and adapt to new situations. They say that Ivan is hard -working, responsible, very reliable, and has excellent maturity and leadership skills. His “Dear Host Family” letter is posted near the Gathering Space kitchen…………… For information on
hosting Ivan, or to talk with other St. Mary's families who have previously hosted with AFS, please call Cheryl Frey at 541-990-4115.

need. Collect your alms throughout the Lenten season and bring them to church sometime during Holy Week or Easter Sunday. Please be sure to label your donation for our Sister Parish or for Catholic Relief Services (Operation Rice Bowl) or for
both. We have run out of rice bowls—so you can put a bowl on your table and save you $’s that way. Thanks!
