In line with the Department of Foreign Affairs’ economic
diplomacy thrust, Philippine Ambassador to Spain Carlos C.
Salinas recently embarked on a special mission to the city of
Seville in Andalucia to promote the Philippines as a premiere
investment destination.
During his three-day visit, which lasted from February 13
to 15, the Ambassador conducted meetings with the city’s
government and business leaders and consular corps.
He also made a presentation entitled “Philippines Today: An
Emerging Engine of Growth” before members of Andalucia’s
Chamber of Commerce, the Confederación de los Empresarios
de Andalucía (CEA) and other business groups.
The presentation shared insights on the latest economic
developments in the Philippines as a result of the strong
leadership of President Benigno S. Aquino III based on the
“Daang Matuwid” philosophy.

A tenor del interés del Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores por fomentar
la diplomacia económica, el pasado mes de febrero el embajador de
Filipinas en España, Carlos C. Salinas, organizó una misión especial en
la ciudad de Sevilla, para promocionar, de forma innovadora, su país
como destino de las inversiones españolas.
Durante su breve visita, de tan sólo tres días (desde el 13 al 15 de
febrero), el embajador de Filipinas se reunió con las autoridades,
algunos líderes empresariales, así como el cuerpo diplomático y
consular de la capital hispalense.
Asimismo, el señor Salinas expuso ante los miembros de la Cámara
de Comercio de Andalucía, la Confederación de los Empresarios de
Andalucía (CEA) y otros grupos empresariales, una presentación acerca
de los últimos avances económicos que han tenido lugar en Filipinas,
titulada: “Philippines Today: An Emerging Engine of Growth” (“La
actual Filipinas: Un Motor Emergente para el Crecimiento”). Dicha
presentación analizó las diferentes percepciones derivadas del
desarrollo financiero que ha experimentado el país filipino, gracias
al destacado liderazgo del presidente Benigno S. Aquino III, cuya
política se basa en la filosofía de “Daang Matuwid”. Los asistentes
al acto también pudieron disfrutar de un video turístico promocional

The presentation also included a video of the country’s tourism
campaign “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” with an invitation
to the audience to visit the Philippines for both business and
leisure.
Majority of the Chamber of Commerce’s member companies
are already doing business in the Philippines. Meanwhile,
CEA expressed the interest of its members in exploring
business opportunities in the Philippines in the infrastructure,
engineering consultancy, environment, agro-industrial and
tourism sectors. The business leaders also manifested their
confidence in the positive momentum of the Philippine
economy, which, in their view, makes the country a priority
option for Spanish companies.
The Ambassador likewise had an opportunity to visit the plant of
ITURRI, a Seville-based company that manufactures and distributes
highly innovative and technical clothing, military footwear and
fire fighting vehicles.
The company, through its Vice CEO Javier Iturri Franco,
expressed its interest in exploring business opportunities in
the Philippines.
Ambassador Salinas was joined by Deputy Chief of Mission
Catalino R. Dilem and Philippine Honorary Consul to Seville
José Ignacio Bidon.

y de negocios.
La mayoría de las empresas integrantes de la Cámara de Comercio,
desde hace algún tiempo, realizan actividades comerciales con
Filipinas, mientras que los miembros de la CEA, mostraron gran
interés por explorar las oportunidades de negocio que este país
ofrece, en cuanto a infraestructuras, asesoramiento técnico, sector
medioambiental, agroindustrial y turístico. En la misma línea, los
líderes empresariales de la ciudad manifestaron su confianza en la
provechosa situación en la que se encuentra la economía filipina y
destacaron la importancia que ello supone, según su opinión, para las
empresas españolas, convirtiendo al país en una opción prioritaria en
sus negociaciones.
Igualmente, el embajador de Filipinas visitó la planta que el Grupo
ITURRI posee en Sevilla, encargada de manufacturar y distribuir
prendas textiles técnicas altamente novedosas, calzado militar
y vehículos contra incendios. La empresa, a través del Vice CEO
Javier Iturri Franco, declaró su interés por investigar acerca de las
posibilidades económicas en Filipinas.
En su visita a Sevilla, el embajador Salinas estuvo acompañado por
Catalino R. Dilem, Jr., Segundo Jefe de la Misión Consular y José
Ignacio Bidon, Cónsul General Honorario de Filipinas.

DIRECT. Time to innovate
At the beginning of 2012, with the goal of providing
their customers with innovative solutions, the ITURRI
Group created a process to channel all the needs for new
products, solutions and services. This process is called
DIRECT.
DIRECT (Detection of Ideas, Registry, Evaluation, Checking
and Tracking) regulates the process from the detection
of an opportunity or need for a new product, solution
or service to its inclusion in the catalogue when the
product is available for sale. Among the detection and
market launch stages are those of analysis, search and
development and the marketing plan.
During the first year, in which we have been able to verify
the functionality and have been perfecting the process,
the technicians and sales team have been receiving
training. With their ideas alone we have recorded
over 200 proposals of new products. In 2013 the whole
organisation will receive training; therefore we expect to
have a large number of proposals.
Everyone in the ITURRI Group can contribute to providing
ideas on new products, solutions and services: from those
who carry out office work to the sales people who spend
time with the customers on a daily basis. This contact with
customers, with markets, our technological surveillance
tools and the brilliance and imagination of our human
resources will enable us to detect a great number of
opportunities for new products.
By promoting creativity between the people comprising
our teams we can ensure that we all recognise how we
provide value and just how much of it we do provide.
DIRECT represents an individual commitment to
innovation by all of those that make up the ITURRI Group.
This commitment drives us to continually update and
overhaul our offering to be able to provide solutions with

A comienzos de 2012, con el objetivo de aportar soluciones innovadoras
a nuestros clientes, el Grupo ITURRI creó un proceso para canalizar todas
las necesidades en nuevos productos, soluciones y servicios. A este proceso
se le denomina DIRECT.
DIRECT (Detection of Ideas, Registry, Evaluation, Checking and Tracking)
regula desde la detección de una oportunidad o necesidad en un nuevo
producto, solución o servicio hasta su inclusión en el catálogo cuando el
producto está ya disponible para la venta. Entre las fases de detección y
de puesta en mercado se incluyen las de análisis, búsqueda o desarrollo y
el plan de marketing.
Durante el primer año, en el que hemos podido comprobar la funcionalidad
y hemos ido perfeccionando el proceso, se ha impartido formación a los
técnicos y comerciales. Solo con sus ideas se han registrado más de 200
propuestas de nuevos productos. En el 2013 se continuará impartiendo
formación a toda la organización, por lo que se espera contar con una
gran cantidad de propuestas.
Todas las personas del Grupo ITURRI pueden contribuir a aportar ideas
en nuevos productos, soluciones y servicios: desde quien realiza trabajos
de oficina hasta el comercial que está en el día a día con el cliente. Lo
que nos permite detectar multitud de oportunidades en nuevos productos
es esta cercanía con el cliente, con los mercados, nuestras herramientas
de vigilancia tecnológica y el ingenio e imaginación de nuestro capital
humano.
Al fomentar la creatividad entre las personas que integran nuestros

• The inside of the home continues to be the place where
most accidents occur.
• In 2012, 6 out of every 1000 Spaniards – in over 10%
of homes in our country – suffered a domestic or a
recreational accident (DADO)*. These types of accidents
represent the fourth highest cause of death in the EU.
• Men are more likely to suffer accidents between the age
of 16 and 42, whilst women over the age of 45 are most
at risk. The biggest enemies for women between 45 to 65
years of age are stairs and water. 87.5% of those suffering
accidents received some type of treatment as a result of
the accident and its average duration was 18 days.
• Falls cause the majority of accidents (51.1%). This is
followed by blows and crashes, as well as cuts and
crushing, with 16.6% and 14.2% of the total, respectively.
The effects of heat-related products are in third place
causing 9.2% of total accidents.
• El interior del hogar continúa siendo el lugar donde más accidentes
ocurren.
• Durante el año 2012, 6 de cada 100 españoles –en más del 10 % de
los hogares de nuestro país- sufrieron un accidente doméstico o de
ocio (DADO). Este tipo de accidentes suponen la cuarta causa de
mortalidad en la UE.
• Los hombres son más proclives a sufrir accidentes entre los 16 y
los 42 años, mientras que las mujeres superan la siniestralidad
media a partir de los 45 años. Para los de 45 a 65 años, los mayores
enemigos son las escaleras y el agua. El 87,5% de los accidentados
recibió algún tipo de tratamiento como consecuencia del siniestro y
su duración media fue de 18 días.
• Las caídas generan la mayoría de los siniestros (51,1%). Les siguen
los golpes y choques, así como los cortes y aplastamientos, con
un 16,6% y un 14,2% del total, respectivamente. Los efectos de
productos térmicos se sitúan en tercer lugar con un 9,2% del total
de accidentes.

The e+ARC® fabric provides the
greatest level of protection with
minimal weight (220 g/m2). A layer
of e+ARC® fabric offers an ATPV
rating of 8.7 cal/cm2 and in the
case of two layers of fabric the
protection is 29 cal/cm2 with just
405 g/m2.

Painter’s overalls redesigned
The ITURRI Group is extending its range of solutions for the
automotive sector with the innovative PAINT MAX overalls.
These overalls boast a brand new design, made from
continuous fibre polyester according to EN 1149/3. They have
been designed especially for work in spray painting booths,
thanks to the fabric’s anti-static fibre used only in the weft
and its FC repellency treatment.
Principal advantages:
• Improvement in the resistance to paint stains thanks to the
use of carbon fibre only in the weft. Suitable for industrial
washing at 70 °C.
• The fabric incorporates a fluorocarbon (FC) repellency
treatment which facilitates the washing of the garment
thus increasing its durability.
• Complies with standard EN 1149/3
• Lint-free garment. Suitable for clean rooms.
Un nuevo concepto
de mono de pintor
El Grupo ITURRI amplía su gama de
soluciones para el sector de la automoción
con el innovador mono PAINT MAX. Se trata
de un nuevo concepto de mono de pintor,
en tejido poliéster de fibra continua según
EN 1149/3. Especialmente concebido para
los trabajos en cabinas de pintura, gracias
a la disposición de la fibra antiestática solo
por trama con la que cuenta el tejido y su
tratamiento de repelencia FC.
Principales ventajas:
• Mejora en el rendimiento contra manchas
de pintura gracias a la disposición de la
fibra de carbono solo en trama. Apto para
lavado industrial a 70ºC.
• El tejido incorpora un tratamiento
repelente fluorocarbon (FC) que facilita
la limpieza de la prenda aumentando la
durabilidad.
• Cumple la norma EN 1149/3
• Prenda libre de pelusas. Apta para salas
limpias.

surveillance and detection system

Thermal imaging cameras enable monitoring of the
perimeter to protect against intruders, as well as the
detection of fire and/or overheating. In the event of
any these circumstances a warning is sounded which
automatically activates other devices that comprise
the solution. Safety is thus increased and the
execution of pre-established protocols is facilitated
in the event of an emergency.
Safety at the plant is reinforced with control systems
at the various access points of the premises and
geolocation technology in the different areas.

La seguridad en planta se ve reforzada con los controles en los diferentes accesos
del recinto y la geolocalización en las distintas zonas.
¿POR QUÉ CÁMARAS TÉRMICAS?
Las cámaras térmicas son un complemento perfecto para cualquier sistema de
vigilancia y detección que tenga que mantener su seguridad en un perímetro o
en una zona que se encuentre en absoluta oscuridad. También bajo cualquier
circunstancia adversa como por ejemplo la lluvia o una alta concentración de
niebla, de humo, o de polvo.
Estos sistemas se pueden reforzar con cámaras convencionales (CCTV) que
permitan obtener imágenes nítidas y de esta manera se pueden identificar
personas, matrículas de vehículos, etc.
WHY THERMAL IMAGING CAMERAS?
Since the beginning of the year the ITURRI Group boasts a
global and scalable solution that adapts to the needs of its
customers, targeting safety at refineries and petrochemical
plants. The solution was devised with its partner SR7.
The solution provided is based on thermal imaging cameras,
access and location control points and on a safety platform
(software application) which is completely customisable to
enable the new devices to be combined with the existing
devices at the customers’ premises. Therefore, they do

Desde comienzos de año el Grupo ITURRI dispone de una solución
global, modulable y adaptable según necesidades de sus clientes,
destinada a la seguridad en refinerías y plantas petroquímicas. La

La solución aportada se basa en cámaras térmicas, en controles de
accesos y localización y en una plataforma de seguridad (aplicación
software) totalmente personalizable que permite integrar distintos
dispositivos existentes en los clientes. Así no tienen que prescindir de la
tecnología ya adquirida como pueden ser cámaras CCTV, minidomos,
sensores de accesos y otros.
Las cámaras térmicas permitirán por una parte vigilar el perímetro
ante posibles intrusiones, y por otra detectar el fuego y/o
sobrecalentamiento. Ante cualquiera de estas circunstancias se
genera una alerta que activa de forma automática otros dispositivos
que componen la solución. De esa forma aumenta la seguridad y se
facilita la ejecución de los protocolos prefijados ante una situación de
emergencia.

in emergency prevention
The directors of safety at the main companies in Valle de
Escombreras have exchanged ideas on emergency prevention
in the 1st Conference on Safety organised by the AEVE
(Association of Valle de Escombreras Companies).
The idea is for this event to serve as a meeting point between
companies to share and learn from each other in terms of
safety policy. Although this collective has achieved low
accident rates over the past year, it is necessary to continue
to work on it.
For 2013 we have set ourselves an important goal: promote
the value of learning and continuous improvement to
guarantee customer satisfaction and strengthen efficiency.

The talk given by José Pérez Ferreira, from the ITURRI Group,
addressed the Hydro-Chem extinguishing system, which
enables the dry chemical powder to be carried within a flow
of water without it losing its extinguishing properties. This
facilitates the powder reaching distances over 40 metres
depending on the flow rate of the water used and its scope.

Training day in Marseille for fire fighters and safety

TOTAL, the main French petrochemical company, received
training from the ITURRI Group and Williams Fore & Hazard
Control which focused on industrial fire fighting in the event
of accidents in tanks storing petrochemical products.
Williams, an American company belonging to the TYCO
group, is the main player in the market as a specialist of
extinguishing industrial fires due to its extensive experience
in dealing with real fires throughout the world.
As storage tanks have increased in size over the last 30
years to optimise plant resources, the risks have increased
exponentially in the case of significant accidents. Due to this
the correct fire extinguishing techniques play a crucial role in
the safety procedures of a facility. This is the principal added
value provided by Williams to the petrochemical industry.
The ITURRI Group has maintained a close relationship with
Williams in several European markets for several years, in the
development of joint protection projects for customers who
are committed to increasing the safety of their facilities. This
joint expertise has been made available to TOTAL to provide
safety solutions.
The training sessions were attended by directors of safety
and fire fighters from refineries located in France, the United
Kingdom, Belgium and the Netherlands who were interested
in learning the extinguishing techniques recognised and
applied to surface fires in refinery tanks.
TOTAL staff members actively took part in the training,
which meant that this session was a good introduction for
the subsequent undertaking of further specific courses at the
French petrochemical company during 2013.

principal referente del mercado como especialista en extinción de fuegos
industriales por su amplia experiencia en fuegos reales en todo el mundo.
A medida que los tanques de almacenamiento han ido creciendo en
tamaño durante los últimos 30 años para optimizar los recursos de la
planta, los riesgos se incrementan exponencialmente en caso de un
incidente importante. Por eso las técnicas correctas de extinción juegan
un papel crítico en los procedimientos de seguridad de la instalación.
Éste es el principal valor añadido que aporta Williams a la industria
petroquímica.
El Grupo ITURRI mantiene desde hace muchos años una relación estrecha
con Willliams en varios mercados europeos, en el desarrollo de proyectos
conjuntos de protección en clientes que han apostado por incrementar
la seguridad de sus instalaciones. Este “expertise” conjunto se ha puesto
al servicio de TOTAL para aportar soluciones en materia de seguridad.
A la formación asistieron jefes de seguridad y bomberos de las refinerías
localizadas en Francia, Reino Unido, Bélgica y Países Bajos interesados
en conocer técnicas de extinción reconocidas y aplicadas a fuegos de
superficie completa en tanques de refinería.
El personal de TOTAL ha participado activamente en los contenidos de
la formación, lo que ha convertido esta jornada en un buen comienzo
para el posterior desarrollo en la petroquímica francesa de más cursos
específicos durante el año 2013.

trace cables located on the outside of the pipes and the
insertion of thermal probes on the inside of the filtration

The company Azkar, which currently belongs to the
multinational Dascher and is a national and international
leader in its field, has awarded the supply and logistical
distribution of workwear to the ITURRI Group.
Today Azkar has facilities which occupy 1,062,322 m2, a fleet
of over 2,659 vehicles and is known for the professionalism
and dedication of its over 5,000 employees.
For the ITURRI Group, external growth with the support of
multinationals with a profile such as this is crucial due to the

Magna, the most diversified automotive supplier in the world.
It designs, develops and manufactures automotive systems,
assemblies, modules and components and assembles complete
vehicles.
Magna Company was established in 1957. Its founder Mr.
Frank Stronach was born in Weiz, Austria and immigrated
to Canada in 1954. Man with a working background in tool
and machine engineering. Now days Frank is Honorable
Chairman of Magna International Inc. Magna employs over
117,000 people in 305 manufacturing plants and 88 product
development and engineering centres in 27 countries.
Magna Formpol exists on the Polish market since 2005. The
plant placed in Tychy produces parts of the car bodies and also
components for body . The main activities on the production
hall are stamping, welding. Company in Tychy employs about
500 people.
In the rush of daily activities we were able to talk with Mrs.
Barbara Tryjanowska. (Safety and Environment Coordinator)

Magna, el proveedor de automoción más diversificado del mundo, se
encarga esencialmente de diseñar, elaborar y manufacturar sistemas
automotrices, montajes, módulos y componentes y de ensamblar
vehículos completos.
Los orígenes de esta compañía se remontan a 1957. Su fundador, el Sr.
Frank Stronach nació en Weiz, Austria y en 1954 emigró a Canadá, con
un bagaje profesional en la fabricación de herramientas y en el sector
de la ingeniería mecánica, Frank se erige como el Presidente de Honor
de Magna International Inc. Esta empresa cuenta, hoy en día, con más
de 117.000 empleados que trabajan en 305 plantas de fabricación y 88
centros de ingeniería y de producción en 27 países.
Magna Formpol está presente en el mercado polaco desde 2005.
Cuenta con una planta en Tychy con un total de 500 empleados,
encargada de fabricar componentes de la carrocería de los automóviles
y llevar a cabo las principales actividades de estampado y soldadura en
su nave de producción.
A pesar de su atareado trabajo diario, Barbara Tryjanowska

and jackets. In the past we sent orders via e-mail or
contacted by phone. Currently orders are generated
automatically by the SAP (system).” - says Barbara.

When asked about what we could accomplish in common
with ITURRI Group Mrs. Barbara Tryjanowska without
hesitation starts talking about gloves replacement,
footwear change for those with antypuncture sole and
also about clothing/garments service (hire and laundry).

Mrs. Barbara Tryjanowska is aware of the fact that
many cases are needed as soon as possible, which is not
an easy thing to accomplish. “I think such a situation
exists in the whole automotive industry , we want to
demand response as soon as possible” - she adds. “In
those special moments we can count on your company”
- Mrs. Barbara Tryjanowska says.
“In the past we used in the press to two types of gloves
at the same time the Kevlar® ones and the leather ones.
Leather gloves where worn on the Kevlar® ones to
avoid quick wipe off and cut. Currently we exchanged
the gloves for Colossus ones after your advice and that
have great facilitated our work and we are very happy
with them. “
Barbara for six years have been taking care about
safety and quality of products, which are used for the
protection.
“Anteriormente, solíamos utilizar dos tipos de guantes al mismo tiempo en la
máquina de troquelar, los guantes Kevlar® y los guantes de piel. Se realizaba
una superposición de estos últimos sobre los guantes Kevlar®, de manera que se
pudiera evitar el desgaste o la rotura anticipados. Gracias a las recomendaciones
del Grupo ITURRI, hemos modificado y actualizado esta técnica y, actualmente,
utilizamos en su lugar guantes Colossus. Estamos muy contentos porque esta
solución ha facilitado en gran medida nuestro trabajo”.
Desde hace seis años, Barbara controla la seguridad y calidad de los productos que
se utilizan para la protección. Ella se encarga de realizar pruebas de medición para
comprobar que los productos fabricados en la planta de Magna Formpol cumplen
con las normas de protección y, al mismo tiempo, analiza sus productos con el
objeto de mejorar el desempeño y rendimiento del trabajo.
En cuanto a los planes de futuro, respecto a su colaboración con el Grupo ITURRI,
ella nos revela que uno de sus proyectos se centrará en la optimización de la
fabricación de guantes para su uso en el sector la soldadura.

The German petrochemical sector is immersed in a process
of change to improve environmental protection. Until now,
products used in the sector to fight hydrocarbon fires contained
fluorine chemical substances whose removal was less than ideal.
However, these fluorine substances, used in AFFF foams, make
extinguishing high risk fires in industry very effective.
The challenge faced by the ITURRI Group has been to develop
a finished product, capable of a superior performance in
extinguishing hydrocarbons without using these fluorine
substances in its formulation as they leave a residue that is
hard to remove.

The ITURRI Group, as a corporate member of the JOIFF since
the beginning of 2012, intends to support this initiative and
provide its experience in industrial safety at an international
level sharing knowledge acquired in international forums
with its customers in the petrochemical industry.
On this occasion the annual meeting was held in the Fire
Service College, Moreton-in-Marsh (United Kingdom).

“UNIPOL Fluorine Free”, un nuevo

El sector petroquímico alemán se encuentra inmerso en un proceso
de cambio para mejorar la protección del medio ambiente. Hasta
ahora, los productos utilizados en el sector para la lucha contra
fuegos de hidrocarburos contenían sustancias químicas fluoradas
cuya eliminación no era del todo óptima. Sin embargo, estas mismas
sustancias fluoradas, utilizadas en las espumas AFFF, hacen que la
extinción de fuegos de alto riesgo en la industria sea muy eficaz.
El reto del Grupo ITURRI ha sido desarrollar un producto terminado,
capaz de dar las más altas prestaciones en extinción de hidrocarburos
sin utilizar en su formulación estas sustancias fluoradas que dejan
residuos difíciles de eliminar.
Este nuevo desarrollo “UNIPOL Fluorine Free 3-6%” ha alcanzado
inmejorables resultados en los test realizados de acuerdo con la
normativa europea EN 1568. También en el Lastfire test, considerado
crítico en la industria petroquímica. La consecuencia ha sido que se
ha generado un considerable aumento de confianza en este tipo de
productos dentro del mercado germano.

JOIFF is an international not-for-profit organisation whose
mission is to prevent and protect safety in industrial plants.
It mainly focuses on the sectors with the highest risks
such as the petrochemical sector, and provides them with
the necessary tools at a consultancy and training level to
guarantee prevention and protection.
This new development “UNIPOL Fluorine Free 3-6%” has
achieved unbeatable results in the tests undertaken in
accordance with European standard EN 1568. This was also
true in the Lastfire test, considered to be crucial in the
petrochemical industry. This has resulted in the generation
of a considerable amount of confidence in these types of
products within the German market.

JOIFF, la prevención y la protección
en plantas industriales
JOIFF es una organización internacional no lucrativa cuya misión
es prevenir y proteger la seguridad en plantas industriales. Está
enfocada principalmente a los sectores con riesgos más altos como el
petroquímico, y se les provee de las herramientas necesarias a nivel de
consultoría y formación para garantizar la prevención y protección.
El Grupo ITURRI, como miembro corporativo del JOIFF desde principios
del año 2012, tiene la intención de apoyar esta iniciativa y aportar su
experiencia en seguridad industrial a nivel internacional transmitiendo
el conocimiento adquirido en los foros internacionales con sus clientes
en la industria petroquímica.
En esta ocasión la reunión anual se ha celebrado en el Fire Service
College, Moreton-in-Marsh (Reino Unido).
At the end of 2012, the ITURRI Group carried out the first
LO-TO training sessions in industry maintenance duties at the
Navantia premises (Ferrol).
LO-TO ‘is the abbreviation of English words ‘Lockout /
Tag-out’, meaning ‘locking’ and ‘labeling’. It is a system to
perform maintenance on the industry safely, and to provide
protection where there are insufficient PPE. This system
basically mandates that each operator involved in a task use
a lock maintenance job security for block energy sources that
could involve risk during a maintenance task, so that no can
be accidentally activated. If the lock can not applied directly,
is placed above the accessory appropriate, and then place the
block with padlock. Likewise, place a label indicating the task
being undertaken. The lock and tag Each operator will not
withdraw from each energy source to that maintenance work
is not finished.
Navantia personnel associated with the fields of workrelated risks, maintenance, production, construction and
vessel repair attended these sessions. They were able to learn
firsthand how to effectively and safely detect the risks that
arise during maintenance tasks for which there is no other
type of protection.

de formación LO-TO en tareas de mantenimiento en la industria en las
instalaciones de Navantia (Ferrol).
LO-TO es la forma abreviada de las palabras inglesas ‘Lockout/Tagout’, que significan ‘Bloqueo’ y ‘Etiquetado’. Es un sistema para
realizar tareas de mantenimiento en la industria de modo seguro, y
para proporcionar protección allá donde los EPI no son suficientes.
Este sistema básicamente promulga que cada operario implicado
en una tarea de mantenimiento use un candado de seguridad
laboral para bloquear las fuentes de energía que puedan suponer
un riesgo durante una tarea de mantenimiento, de modo que no
puedan activarse accidentalmente. Si el candado no puede aplicarse
directamente, se colocará previamente el accesorio apropiado, y a
continuación se realizará el bloqueo con el candado. Igualmente, se
colocaría una etiqueta indicando la tarea que se está llevando a cabo.
El candado y la etiqueta de cada operario no se retirará de cada fuente
de energía hasta que la labor de mantenimiento no esté finalizada.
A estas sesiones asistió personal de Navantia relacionado con las
áreas de prevención de riesgos laborales, mantenimiento, producción,
construcción y reparación de buques. Pudieron conocer de primera
mano, cómo consignar de modo efectivo y seguro los riesgos que se
presentan durante las tareas de mantenimiento y ante los que no
existe ningún otro tipo de protección.
Se hizo hincapié en la importancia de concienciar sobre los riesgos reales
en este tipo de labores. La recepción de los asistentes fue realmente
positiva. Estuvieron de acuerdo con el enfoque e ilustraron con casos que,
tristemente, han tenido lugar en la realidad y que son precisamente los
que se pretenden evitar con la implantación del LO-TO.

very positive in their reaction to this content. They agreed
with the focus and provided examples of cases that, sadly,
actually took place and are precisely those which are sought
to be avoided with the implementation of LO-TO.

to the Space Engines developing the cryogenic propulsion
(hydrogen and liquid oxygen) for the Ariane 5 rocket.
Ranked Seveso II because of its storage of liquid hydrogen,

A Tank with a capacity of 3200 l (3000 L of water and 200 L

and compartments are arguments that convinced SNECMA to

Snecma Vernon, situada a 75 km del oeste de París, es una empresa
dedicada, entre otras funciones, a la fabricación de motores espaciales.
Esta empresa ha desarrollado un sistema de propulsión criogénica
(basada en hidrógeno y oxígeno líquido) para el lanzador europeo
Ariane 5.
Debido a su almacenamiento de hidrógeno líquido, la empresa ha
hecho todos los esfuerzos posibles por asegurar una mayor protección
de las personas, plantas y medioambiente, ante los posibles riesgos
derivados de ciertas actividades industriales. Para ello ha realizado
una renovación de sus recursos móviles y ha ejecutado la creación de

For approximately few years Colonel Eric Peuch took part in the training
work included in emergencies and risks management, operational
management and public safety control.
How long have you been practicing your profession for?
Since 1976 and I know quite well the most common problems in fire
fighting. I’m responsible for 2,500 fire fighters, 500 technicians and
4,000 premises, including 70 fire stations.
How do you protect yourselves against danger and risks
related to the work you carry out on a daily basis?
We use all kinds of protective equipment. Being a fire fighter
involves being highly qualified, which means we need to use
highly specialised products to carry out the corresponding
work. We cannot compromise on the quality of the protective
equipment. We need to feel safe and not doubt the effectiveness of the equipment, from that worn on the head right down
to the feet, from helmets to footwear, not forgetting vehicles.
From some ignorants, Spain was more closely associated with
arid ground and I feel sorry about that, but I do have to admit
that at the beginning we were very sceptical. So, imagine how
surprised we were when we received excellent quality, cutting
edge solutions. And I can be very critical and demanding,
qualities that also go hand in hand with my profession.

What do you think about the collaboration between your

In France, engaging in a public procurement requires

I place great importance on the fact that I don’t ever have to
worry about the quality of the protective equipment and the
fact that we can count on each other.
Fire fighters are trained in emergency drills. Every member
of the team in a fire engine must be aware of safety. Trainees
learn to adjust their own protective equipment and they are
trained in safety or evacuation drills. Protection has improved a great deal in recent years due to serious accidents
resulting in death during the extinguishing of forest fires and
also in the urban context. Safety must be a top priority for all.

¿Cómo se protegen de los peligros y riesgos vinculados al trabajo que
desempeñan diariamente?
Utilizamos todo tipo de protección. Ser bombero implica estar altamente
cualificado, lo que significa que existe la necesidad de utilizar productos
sumamente especializados para realizar las labores correspondientes.
No podemos comprometer la calidad del equipo de protección. Debemos
sentirnos seguros y no dudar en ningún caso de la eficacia de los
componentes del equipo, desde aquellos destinados a la cabeza hasta los
de los pies, desde el casco al calzado, sin olvidar los vehículos.
A los bomberos se les entrena en simulacros de emergencia. Todos los
miembros del equipo de un camión de bomberos deben tomar conciencia
de la seguridad. Los aspirantes del cuerpo de bomberos aprenden
a ajustarse el equipo de protección individual y se les instruye en
simulacros de seguridad o evacuación. La protección ha mejorado mucho
durante los últimos años a causa de accidentes graves con resultado de
muerte durante la extinción de incendios forestales, y también en el
ámbito urbano. La seguridad debe estar en la mente de todos.

tender” to the International College of Engineering
and Management in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman,
first training college in the Middle East with both
vocational training and High Educational and
Academic Degree. This interesting VIM60 fire tender
is built on a Volvo FM 410 6x2 chassis with the
manufacturers 6 x man crew-cab; a 307 kw Volvo
DC11C 410 CV “Euro 5 delivered as Euro III special
for GCC Countries” diesel engine and a Powertronic
gearbox. The superstructure is manufactured in
aluminum with access to the top deck a rear fixfolding ladder. The tender carries 6,500 litres of
water, 1.000 litres of foam and 250 kg of powder.

The LYNX, an ideal vehicle for working
in areas with complicated terrain such as
Santander, in Florida Blanca (Colombia)
Last January the voluntary fire brigade from Florida Blanca in Colombia, headed by its chief,
Eduardo Pacheco, visited the ITURRI Group facilities to receive the first LYNX vehicle to be sent
to Latin America. This fire brigade serves the municipality of Florida Blanca, with a population of
300,000 inhabitants, and supports nearby towns.

Santander province was hit hard by forest fires in 2012, and
the acquisition of this vehicle is a new attempt on the part
of Florida Blanca council and its fire brigade to provide the
municipality with adequate means to fight fires.
The LYNX is a 4x4 vehicle equipped to handle any kind of
emergency, and is designed to be able to operate on difficult
terrain such as that in the Santander area. Its narrow 170 cm
chassis makes it adept at rescue work and helps in natural
disasters such as earthquakes and floods.
The bodywork of this vehicle uses EcoPolyfire®, an innovative
material that is very light and resistant and one hundred
percent recyclable. It enables the vehicle to transport a large
quantity of water (1,980 litres) compared to its weight in
order to combat forest fires.
This perfect combination of mobility on all terrains,
extinguishing capabilities and maximum space for equipment
will be serving the inhabitants of Florida Blanca from April
this year.

First conference to explain how the Military Disaster
Relief Unit works to representatives from 11 Latin
American countries
This conference coincided with the fourth edition of the practical schools of interoperability
of telecommunications media and information systems in emergencies (EPCIS)

Director-General of Cooperation and Civil Defence of the
Directorate General of Defence Policy (DIGENPOL), BrigadierGeneral Luis Miguel Yagüe Herreros, the attendees were able
to discover firsthand the specific equipment which the UME
has at its disposal to tackle emergencies.
Once the series of conferences had finished, the UME also
showed the Latin American delegation the capabilities and
products of the national industry in the field of emergencies
in order to establish possible new markets with the sector.

Defence measures to enable the Navy’s ships to dock
at ports with greater safety
The ITURRI Group will be responsible for providing and
installing the defences that the various arsenals of the Spanish
Navy require at ports over the next 3 years. The applications
will be centralised in Madrid, in the parts and replacements
division of the Logistics Support Unit (JAL). Until now, each
arsenal used buy and install its own defences.
This is a turnkey project in which the elements of defence to
be supplied are different sizes and types (foam, cylindrical,
etc.). The material required will depend on the needs of the
different arsenals. The defences are installed in the docks and
ensure that the ships’ hulls are not damaged during docking.
They are attached by means of a locking system using chains
and shackles which are directly anchored to the dock or to the
bollards. The first deliveries and installations have been carried
out in the Canary Islands, Cartagena, Ferrol, Cadiz and Rota.

de la Armada española necesitan en los puertos va a correr a cargo
del Grupo ITURRI durante los próximos 3 años. Las solicitudes se
centralizarán en Madrid, en el área de repuestos de la Jefatura de
Apoyo Logístico (JAL). Hasta ahora, cada arsenal compraba e instalaba
sus propias defensas.
Se trata de un proyecto “llave en mano” en el que las defensas a
suministrar son de diferentes tamaños y tipos (Foam, cilíndricas…).

Did you know…the Chinese don’t understand each other?
We all know that it’s just a matter of time before China
becomes the largest economic power in the world. There are
many unique traits that characterise China, linguistics being
without a doubt one of them.
Did you know that when we talk about Chinese as a language
most of the time we are referring to standard Mandarin? However,
different groups of languages are spoken in China that are so
different from one another that the different speakers don’t even
understand each other.
Chinese dialects and number of speakers
Mandarin (or Northern language), 836 million speakers; Wú, 77
million; Mîn dialects, 70 million; Cantonese or Yuè, 55 million; Jin,
45 million; Xiang or Huanese, 36 million; Hakka or Kéjia, 34 million,
Gàn, 31 million; Hui, 3.2 million, Pínghuà, 3.5 million.
If you had to hire the services of an interpreter, distinguishing
the dialect would be of commercial value. If you know what
the native dialect of your customer is, he will feel more at ease.
Standard Mandarin is used in China as the lingua franca, i.e.,
like English in the EU.

Written Chinese: simplified and traditional
Despite the fact that these languages may be unintelligible in
their spoken form to speakers of other dialects, they all use the
same symbols in their writing. This characteristic of Chinese is
without a doubt one of the key factors that makes the cohesion
of such a diverse country possible.
When translating from Chinese we must take into account that
if our product is for China it should be written in simplified
Chinese; but if we are targeting Taiwan, Hong Kong or Macao,
we should write in traditional Chinese. Simplified Chinese is the
result of a reform of the Chinese written language of1965 by
the communist government of the People’s Republic of China.

muchas las singularidades que caracterizan a China, la lingüística
es sin duda una de ellas.
¿Sabía que cuando hablamos del chino como lengua la mayoría
de las veces nos estamos refiriendo al mandarín estándar? Sin
embargo, en China se hablan diversos grupos de lenguas tan
distintos entre sí que no se entienden al hablar.
Dialectos chinos y número de hablantes
Mandarín (o habla del Norte), 836 millones de hablantes; wú 77
millones; dialectos mîn, 70 millones; cantonés o yuè, 55 millones;
jin, 45 millones; xiang o hunanés, 36 millones; hakka o kèjia, 34
millones; gàn, 31 millones; hui, 3,2 millones; pínghuà, 3,5 millones.
Si tuviese que contratar los servicios de un intérprete, la distinción
del dialecto tendrá valor comercial. Si sabe cuál es el dialecto
materno de su cliente, éste se sentirá más cómodo. El mandarín
estándar se utiliza en China como lengua franca, es decir, como el
inglés en la UE.
Chino escrito: simplificado y tradicional
Pese a que estos idiomas puedan ser ininteligibles oralmente,
todos utilizan los mismos símbolos al escribir. Esta característica del
chino es sin duda una de las claves que hacen posible la cohesión
de un país tan diverso.
Al traducir al chino, la singularidad que hay que tener en cuenta
es que si nuestro producto va a China deberá estar escrito en chino
simplificado, pero si nos dirigimos a Taiwán, Hong Kong o Macao
deberíamos escribir en chino tradicional. El chino simplificado nace
de una reforma de la escritura del chino de 1965 del gobierno
comunista de la República Popular China.
