The Ascension of the Lord
May 8, 2016
God mounts his throne amid shouts of joy; the Lord, amid
trumpet blasts.
— Psalm 47:6
Reflections by Fr. Carlos
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On this day I want to wish a happy mother´s day to all
the women that have received the beautiful gift of
maternity. The month of may also represents the month
of Mary. In the Catholic Church the devotion to her is
important and for this reason I want to use the article of
Fr. William Saunders to explain a lit of bit what the
Rosary means:
“The rosary is one of the most cherished prayers of
our Catholic Church. Introduced by the Creed, the Our
Father, three Hail Marys and the Doxology ("Glory Be"),
and concluded with the Salve Regina, the rosary
involves the recitation of five decades consisting of the
Our Father, 10 Hail Marys and the Doxology. During
this recitation, the individual meditates on the saving
mysteries of our Lord's life and the faithful witness of
our Blessed Mother.
Journeying through the Joyful, Sorrowful and
Glorious mysteries of the rosary, the individual brings to
mind our Lord's incarnation, His passion and death and
His resurrection from the dead. In so doing, the rosary
assists us in growing in a deeper appreciation of these
mysteries, in uniting our life more closely to our Lord
and in imploring His graced assistance to live the faith.
We also ask for the prayers of our Blessed Mother, who
leads all believers to her Son.
The origins of the rosary are "sketchy" at best. The
use of "prayer beads" and the repeated recitation of
prayers to aid in meditation stem from the earliest days
of the Church and has roots in pre-Christian times.
Evidence exists from the Middle Ages that strings of
beads were used to count Our Fathers and Hail Marys.
Actually, these strings of beads became known as
"Paternosters," the Latin for "Our Father."
The structure of the rosary gradually evolved
between the 12th and 15th centuries. Eventually 50
Hail Marys were recited and linked with verses of
psalms or other phrases evoking the lives of Jesus and
Mary. During this time, this prayer form became known
as the rosarium ("rose garden"), actually a common
term to designate a collection of similar material, such
as an anthology of stories on the same subject or
theme. During the 16th century, the structure of the five
-decade rosary based on the three sets of mysteries
prevailed.
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — Jesus tells the disciples that they
will be witnesses to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:
1-11).
Psalm — God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a
blare of trumpets for the Lord (Psalm 47).
Second Reading — God seated Jesus at his right
hand in the heavens (Ephesians 1:17-23) or
Hebrews 9:24-28; 10:19-23.
Gospel — As Jesus blessed his disciples he parted
from them and was taken up to heaven (Luke 24:
46-53).
POPE’S PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR MAY
Universal: That in every country of the world, women
may be honored and respected and that their essential
contribution to society may be highly esteemed.
Evangelization: That families, communities, and
groups may pray the Holy Rosary for evangelization
and peace.
MANDATORY MINISTER TRAINING DAY
There will be a mandatory training on Saturday,
May 21st from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. in Biedermann Hall.
This training is for all "Active", "Inactive" and "New"
Eucharistic Ministers & Lectors. The purpose is multifold: to bring everybody up-to-date and ensure we are
all on the same page on how we do things; to answer
questions many of you have; to provide some
'retraining' and for new ministers, original training;
explanation on how the scheduling program works. We
will be having a luncheon pot luck style and during
lunch we will have a get acquainted/introduction
session. The pot luck luncheon will be coordinated by
Jim & Joanne Abing. Please contact Joanne regarding
what to bring or related questions at 644-4586 or email
[email protected].
Anyone who would like a topic discussed should
send a message to the Scheduler ASAP and any
minister with a valid reason for not attending, please
notify the Scheduler ([email protected]).
Happy Mother’s Day!

Youth Ministry News
May is the month of Mary in the Catholic Church.
For a lot of people, including some Catholics, they
have a misconception on the ways that we honor
and celebrate Mary, the mother of Jesus. A lot of
people have the idea that we worship and idolize
Mary, which is very easy to see why they think that
way. We have statues of Mary, portraits, murals,
sometimes it looks like we care about Mary more
than Jesus, but this is not the case. We uphold
Mary because she said “yes”. Mary said “yes” to
God, “Yes” to being the mother of Jesus Christ, she
said the first “Yes” to Jesus. Sometimes we forget
about how big it was that Mary said “yes”. Mary is
the example for us to say “yes” to God and his
plans, even when it seems like we can’t, even when
it is too hard. This past week with our Junior High
teens we talked about Mary’s “yes” and how she is
our example to say “yes” to God.

DID YOU KNOW?
Stress can affect your child
Everyone has stress, whether it’s a bad day at work,
car trouble, or simply too many things to do. It is
important to learn how to manage your stress—for
your own sake and for the children around you. Too
much stress can make it hard to parent effectively.
After a while, your children may show signs of being
stressed out, too. For a fact sheet on managing stress
please email: [email protected] or call (213)
637-7227.
Stewardship: Loving God with Our

Gozosos, Luminosos, Dolorosos y Gloriosos.
