Perfect Attendance
A Perfect attendance report is run after each
marking period, and a student with perfect
attendance for that quarter is awarded a
certificate and a homework pass. PERFECT
ATTENDANCE is based on no absences, no
tardies, and no early dismissals.
This is also a great opportunity to remind
families that the board of education
considers 6 absences in a semester (two
marking periods) excessive. Bodkin, as with
all schools, has an attendance committee
that monitors excessive absences, excessive
tardies, and excessive early dismissals. As
much as we encourage perfect attendance,
we also want to encourage parents /
guardians to keep sick children home where
they can do their best resting and healing!
The attendance committee will mail home
an attendance letter when there is a
concern. Please feel free to contact Bodkin
if ever you have any questions or concerns
about your student’s attendance.

Principal’s Message
Dear Parents,
The 2013-2014 school year opened with the usual great
excitement. The sneak peek, back-to-school night, and
McDonald’s night are great ways to build early relationships with
teachers and staff. As a principal it is heartwarming to see the
school community come together for the students. Thank you
for being generous with your time.
October will bring Bodkin’s Race for Education. This will
be another great opportunity to come to school and spend an
hour with the students walking and running together to benefit
the PTA. This is the PTA’s biggest fundraiser. Another popular
October event is the Halloween parade on October 31 at
10:00am in the front school parking lot and bus lane. After the
parade, teachers have planned fall activities around lunch and
recess. This is a well-attended event so be sure to get a great
spot on the parade route. We intend to maintain this as a day of
instruction, so indoor visitors will be strictly limited and
classroom helpers will be pre-arranged with the teacher in
advance.
Although there are many fun activities for students
through this season, the teachers have been challenging the
students with the new National Common Core Standards. This
curriculum will replace the MSA standards, which will end this
year. Last Friday marked the first interim reporting period for
the students. If you have any questions and concerns, please feel
free to contact the teachers or any other member of the Bodkin
staff. We are all here to help to support students as we offer
rigor to challenge all students.
It still remains an honor for me to be a small part of such
a vibrant school community. If I can be of help to you or your
child please do not hesitate to contact me. For now, thank you
for sending the very best students ready to learn every day.

Federal Survey Cards (reminder)
Anne Arundel County Public Schools will once
again be participating in the Federal Parent/Pupil Survey. The information needed to comply with the
Federal Impact Aid Law is based on your current information as of September 30, 2013. Federal
funding generated from this survey will greatly enhance our school system’s quest to move from good to
great. Please complete the survey, sign/date the form, and have your child return it to their teacher as
soon as possible. The U.S. Department of Education has now requested a separate survey form for each
child and each survey form must be signed and dated by the Parent/Guardian. All forms must be
returned by November 22, 2013. As Parents/Guardians of our students, please help us reach our goal
of 100% participation. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Ms.
Donna Barker, 410-222-5200, at the Central Office.
Spirit Wear Day
On Wednesday, October 9, we have wear your favorite jersey spirit wear
day. Students can wear a jersey from their favorite sports team or they may wear one of their own
jerseys from a sport they play. Also, on Wednesday, October 23, we are celebrating FITNESS IS FUN!
So come to school dressed in your “fitness clothes” to promote (what else?) fitness and being active.
PICTURE DAY
Smile for the Camera! Our individual pictures will be taken on
Thursday, October 3rd. Picture envelopes will be sent home prior to picture day. Order
forms are also available on the Bodkin Website under “Office Forms.” Class pictures will be
taken in the Spring.
SCHOOL CLOSING
School will be CLOSED to ALL students:
Friday, October 18th
(for a Professional Staff-Developmental Day)
Two-Hour Early Dismissal
School will close at 1:45 pm for ALL students:
Monday, October 14th (Attacking the Gap)
Lunches are 15 minutes earlier on 2-hr early dismissal days.
Bodkin’s Halloween Parade!
The traditional Bodkin
Halloween Parade will be held on Thursday, October 31, 2013.
Students in Kindergarten through Grade 5 will parade outside
beginning at .10:00 am.. More information will be sent home
regarding costumes. The traditional Bodkin Halloween Parade is
voluntary. If you have any concerns about your child’s participation,
please feel free to call me at your earliest convenience. After the
parade, teachers have planned fall activities around lunch and
recess. This is a well-attended event so be sure to get a great
Thurs, Oct 31 @ 10:00am
spot on the parade route. We intend to maintain this as a day of
instruction, so indoor visitors will be strictly limited and classroom helpers will be pre-arranged with the
teacher in advance.
Parent/Teacher Conferences — Important Information!
Schools will be closed to students from Monday, November 25 through Friday, November 29
for parent/teacher conferences and Thanksgiving vacation. The November Parent/Teacher Conferences
are scheduled for Monday, November 25 and Tuesday, November 26.
Reports cards for students in Grades One—Five will be sent home with students on Friday,
November 12. Please bring your child's report card with you to the conference. Kindergarten parents
will receive their child’s Progress Report at the scheduled conference time. Please note: Conferences
will be scheduled by your child’s teacher in 20-minute blocks. If you are going on vacation or need an
alternate conference time, please send in a note to your child’s teacher.
Parent Conferences Are Always Welcome…
Our
teachers always welcome good communication with the parents of our students.
However, due to staff meetings, as well as necessary teacher planning time,
SPONTANEOUS conferences before or after school are discouraged.
You do not have to wait until November to meet with your child’s teacher;
however, we are asking you to call in advance or send in a note with your child to
his/her teacher to schedule a conference at a mutually convenient time.

Bodkin Staff Is “Casual for a Cause!”
Bodkin’s staff is raising money to support the Race for the Cure Campaign. Teachers and staff
have the opportunity to pay to dress casually (yes... this means jeans!) during the month of
October. So if you see casual wear happening in the classrooms and halls, just know that it is
casual with a cause!
~Office News~
Dismissals
Dismissal of your student is extremely important. Students requiring
early dismissal must come to the school with a note from the parent
indicating the date, time, and reason for the early dismissal (and a name
of the person picking up student if other than parent/guardian). Please
allow extra time when picking up your youngster. They will not be
dismissed from their class until you arrive to sign them out; this is to
minimize lost instruction time. In our efforts to reduce the high volume
of calls at the end of the school day, we are requesting that parents
send a note in to the teacher if there is a change to the student’s
regular dismissal routine. Please use the additional car rider list as a last
resort. This will clearly avoid last-minute confusion in the office, the
classroom, as well as with the child. Without a note granting your
permission to change their routine, your child will be instructed to follow
the normal dismissal procedure indicated on their Emergency Card. Also,
as a friendly reminder, all notes should include the student’s full name,
the date of the note, the teacher’s name, and a parent/guardian
signature; the more information you provide to us, the better we are able
to serve you. We thank you for your assistance and understanding. We
want to ensure the safe dismissal of all of our students!
Say WHAT?!
“My kid went where with whom?!” So
that we NEVER have that scenario, we
ALWAYS need a note from the
parent/guardian when someone else is
to pick up a student. Listing someone
on an emergency card does not give
them free access to pick up your
student whenever. Without a note, we
have no idea if you are aware of this
early dismissal. So what IS the
purpose of additional names on an
emergency card?! Here is the inside
scoop! The ONLY purpose for listing
additional names on the emergency
cards is if your student is sick or
school closes unexpectedly (ie, loss of
power/water, etc) and we are UNABLE
to get in touch with you, who is
another person we may contact to pick
up your student? It’s that simple.
With a note,
WE know
that
YOU know!
Student Supervision
Unless children are practicing for chorus or some other
teacher-supervised activity, students will not be allowed to enter the
building before the first bell rings at 9:05 am.
When children return to our building for evening activities with their
parents, good school behavior is expected, and parents are requested to
supervise their children during these times. Children should not be in any
classroom areas without permission and supervision.
Volunteers!
If you missed the Volunteer Orientation and Sign-up Fair in September, there is still time
for you to get involved! There are many opportunities still available. Our e-mail account has been set up with all
available volunteers ([email protected]). We hope that this system will allow for communication.
There are several uses for the e-mail system including teachers and staff using it to e-mail tasks they need
accomplished. Hopefully, this system will be a great way to manage all the tasks needed to be done! If you were
at the Volunteer Orientation and filled out a sheet indicating your e-mail address, please make sure that you
have received an e-mail from [email protected] to make sure you have been put into the system
correctly. If you would like to be a part of this e-mail database, send an e-mail to [email protected]
indicating your name and what areas of interest you have for volunteering at Bodkin Elementary. If you have any
questions, feel free to contact Mrs. Nee-Jackson or Mrs. Landis at the school. Thanks!

Red Ribbon Week 2013
Mix-It-Up at Lunch
Bodkin Elementary School celebrates students saying
“NO!” to alcohol and drugs
October 22-31, 2013
In 1985, Federal drug enforcement agent, Enrique Camarena, was killed by drug
traffickers in Mexico. In response to his death, angered parents across the country
began wearing Red Ribbons to symbolize their commitment toward the creation of a drug
free America. Congress officially proclaimed the first National Red Ribbon Week,
October 23-31st, 1988. The red ribbon has now become a symbol for the drug free
movement.
(Red Ribbon Week Tribune, Fall 2001)
Students will participate in activities and lessons that reinforce
“SAYING NO” to things that are harmful. Ask your child about
what he/she is learning and remember, discussing ways to say “no”
at home and school helps your child learn skills to benefit a
lifetime.
Is it Bugging? Bossing?
Bothering? Or Bullying?
Helping children learn to identify the type of issues they are having
with peers is the first step to solving the problem. Often, children
hear the word, “bullying” and think, yeah…that was mean, I’m
being bullied. However, many peer interactions, albeit needing
adult intervention may not begin as bullying.
When a peer is bugging (i.e. doing childish or annoying
behaviors, goofy teasing, etc.), it’s helpful for your child to learn to
say, “Please stop, that really bugs me.”
Bossing behavior is common as children become aware of
rules and procedures. It is a misdirected form of “helping”, but still
problematic for the bossed and the boss-ee. Children can try
saying, “I know you are trying to help, but I am ok right now…”
Bothering behaviors are often unintentional habits that
classmates may have that “bother” others. In this case, helping
your child learn to move away politely, give gentle reminders, or
discreetly ask the teacher for assistance.
AACPS recognizes bullying as behavior or actions that are:
4 Are intentional
4 Physical, verbal, social behaviors that are intended to
hurt
4 Are repeated and/or frequent
4 Are hurtful
4 Manifest a perceived imbalance of power
4 Substantially interfere with a student’s educational
benefits, opportunities, or performance.
If your child is the victim of bullying, please report the
incident by using the AACPS Bullying reporting form
(attached to this newsletter and available at www.aacps.org.)
Bodkin is joining the National
Campaign to actively and
intentionally “mix-it-up” at
lunch/recess. So often, students
become comfortable with 1 group of
friends. While not always a bad
thing, it is helpful that ALL students
learn skills and strategies to relate
with anybody and everybody. Mix it
up day provides an opportunity for
students to sit with someone new or
play with someone new. We will be
providing opportunities throughout
the year for our students to celebrate
mixing it up.
Character Takes the
Leading Role at Bodkin
This month, Bodkin will feature a spotlight
on respect. Students will receive tickets
and we will have random drawings during
each lunch each day of the week. If you
or your business would be interested in
supporting this character education
initiative by helping to supply small
incentives, please contact Jennifer Elsis
at 410-437-0464.
Could your family use a bit of
help for the holidays?
At this time, we are preparing
assistance for Thanksgiving and
Christmas to assist Bodkin
families during these trying
financial times. Please contact
Jenn Elsis if your family would
benefit from a little extra help this
season and know that
confidentiality is respected.

FluMist
By Sue Simon, RN, School Nurse
We will be giving FluMist as scheduled on Tuesday, October 29, 2013, to
those students who turned in permission forms. Unfortunately, there is no
make-up day if your child is absent. The Department of Health will also be
scheduling flu vaccination clinics. The schedule and information will be located
on the website: www.aahealth.org. As flu season approaches, teach your child to wash their
hands, cough into a tissue or their elbow, and to keep their hands away from their eyes, nose,
and mouth.
Accidents Happen
It is always a good idea, no matter what
your child’s age, to keep an extra pair of
clothing in your child’s locker. Sometimes
accidents happen at school, and they are
not always bathroom related. Children
may spill milk, rip their pants, or slip in the mud. Waiting for parents to be located and arrive
with clothing when this happens can result in discomfort, and lost class time for your child.
Crutches and Casts and Stitches, OH MY!
If your child sustains an injury that requires crutches or a cast,
please send in a doctor’s note to the health room that includes any activity
limitations they may have.
Up-to-Date Information
Please keep us updated with current phone numbers should we need to
contact you. Send in a note with a phone number change to the teacher and
the note will make the rounds to update our database, emergency card, and to
health room.

ART NEWS
Mrs. Jaclyn Cockcroft & Mrs. Hann (PT)
These Bodkin artists always amaze me with their outstanding talents. Fifth grade created cool
colored bubble prints with silhouettes of many aquatic animals. Third grade just finished a watercolor
painting of dragonflies, and fourth grade is busy working on three-dimensional papier mache haunted
houses. Your children have been terrific to work with in art and have done an amazing job on their
projects already this year. Please stop by once in a while to see their work in the halls, and in the
showcase. All the grades are painting at this time, so please remember to leave their nice clothes in the
closet on art days.
Let’s CONGRATULATE Adam K. and Zoe K. in 1st grade for being October’s ‘Artists of
the Month’! They both have demonstrated excellent behavior in the art room and have created gorgeous
artwork. You can see some of their work on display in the art room this month.

Box Tops for Education
It’s that time of year again!!! PLEASE don’t
forget to send in those BoxTops. All you
need to do is just cut out the BoxTops (on
the dotted line would be really helpful), and
check the expiration dates on them. We will
not get credit if they are expired!! Then
send them to school in a ziplock bag with
your child’s FIRST and LAST name and
GRADE only. We will be starting our
BoxTops Tuesday again in early October,
which means 2 children from each grade
will earn a prize every Tuesday for simply
sending in BoxTops. It doesn’t matter if you
have a little or a lot just send them in.
Hopefully this year as a TEAM, we can beat

Help Your Child Explore Science
What you say to your child
is important. But what may
be even more important is
what you don’t say.
Parents often convey their
attitudes and expectations
in indirect ways. If you tell
your children, “I never liked
science in school” or “I got
my worst grades in science,” you convey the expectation that science classes will be boring or difficult. On the other hand, if
you say, “I wish I could do
that experiment with you”
or “I’m so glad that you are
having opportunities that I
missed,” you will open
doors for your children.
Not every child, of course,
is destined to seek a career in science. But every
child should be able to be-
come a scientifically literate
adult, and all children
should know that if they
choose science as a career, they can succeed.
Parental expectations can
encourage positive attitudes and personal best.
Other Helpful Tips:
 Encourage your child to
take things apart! Old toys,
clocks, and household appliances are great lessons—and don’t worry
about putting them back
together!
 Don’t forget about safety.
Supervise young children
as needed.
 Discuss science and
technology careers. When
you encounter people in
science-related careers,
encourage your children to
ask questions about these
jobs and the training needed for them.
 Give children the chance
to make independent discoveries and participate in
scientific processes while
having fun at science centers, museums, and natural
science institutions.
 Check out sciencerelated library books and
read them together.
 Encourage children to
explore awards programs
and competitions to extend
what they are learning in
class.

Book of the Month
What’s for Dinner? by Katherine B. Hauth
Start with poetry, end with
science in this "quirky,
squirmy" book about predators and their prey. Fanciful drawings make this
book fun to share—a nighthawk scooping insects
from the air, a wood turtle
"stompin'/and slammin'" in
a dance that forces worms
out of the ground, four
seemingly lazy positions
that set a polar bear up to
grab prey. Reading each
poem aloud starts the fun.
ing Science Trade
Book is a great way to introduce the role and adaptations of predators in an
interdisciplinary and motivational way at the elementary level.

Escuelas Publicas del Condado de Anne Arundel
Explorando Las Ciencias En Casa
no dice.
* Motívelo a desarmar las
cosas! Electrodomésticos,
relojes y juguetes viejos, son
grandes lecciones — ¡Y no se
preocupe por recomponerlos!
* No se olvide de seguridad.
Supervise a los niños cuando
sea necesario.
* Tome libros relacionadas

influence on their children’s achievement. When schools, families, and community
groups work together to support learning, children tend to do better in school, stay
in school longer, and like school more.” Anne T. Henderson, Karen L. Mapp

Anne T. Henderson, Karen L. Mapp
