If there is one city that has made past and present history in the modern state of Brazil, its name is Recife. It is not only colonial reminiscences that are hoarded there by the giant of Latin America, beacon and leader of today’s New World. Founded in 1537, we are talking even so about Brazil’s first ever capital, further distinguished then with the rank of captaincy. St Petersburg and Amsterdam are both often referred to as the ‘Venice of the North’ owing to the canals flowing through their city centres. For similar reasons, Bangkok competes with other Asian cities for the title of ‘Venice of the Orient’. But there is only one Venice of the New World, and that is Recife, which comes into its own as soon as the visitor discovers the personality of its old quarter reflected under its bridges. Iberia begins direct flights from Madrid to Recife on 1 February. ■ The Hereditary Captaincy of Recife was under Dutch dominion for 24 years, which was long enough for the architect Pieter Post to design polders and canals for it similar to those of the Netherlands. Recife then answered to the name of Maurisstad. Reigning over the late Baroque streets of Recife is the formidable church of Santo Antônio, a sign of the important part played by the Catholic Church in its growing monumentalisation. Further proof is provided by the cathedral of São Pedro dos Clerigos and its polychrome interior. Nevertheless, it was at the initiative of the Mascates, the colonial bourgeoisie who arrived from Portugal, that Recife underwent its civil and institutional development. Although it was raised to the status of a town in 1709 under the name of Santo Antônio das Cacimbas do Recife do Porto, it did not attain the administrative rank of a city until 1823. In the 18th century, Recife’s thriving commerce threatened the interests of the colonial landowners, since it was not from there but from Olinda, seven kilometres away, that they controlled the state’s sugar production. As a result, Recife suffered the Mascates War of 1710-11 when it was already a settlement of some size. This explains why the ideas of the Enlightenment took such firm hold there a century later, leading to demands for greater autonomy from Lisbon. Recife was also to live through both the so-called Pernambucan Revolution of 1817 and the Praieira Revolt of 1848 in tune with the song of European nationalism. The ideas of the European Age of Enlightenment brought liberal 106 RONDA IBERIA convulsions to Recife, and ended up creating an atmosphere favourable to cultural development. Well supported by the institutions, a population of a million and a half (plus the Olinda area, with half a dozen universities) is provided with an opera house, two permanent orchestras, 15 theatres, 24 museums and 38 art galleries. The statistics are important in this case, for they place it at the forefront of the new Brazilian idiosyncrasy for art consumption. It is not by chance that Recife has become the home of many artists and writers, not to mention composers of frevo, the great musical genre from the north-east of the homeland of the samba. From Christmas to Easter, Recife can also boast the biggest carnivalesque parade in the world. Besides frevo, other dance rhythms heard at that moment include capoeira, reggae, samba, forró, maracatu, maguebeat rock, xaxado and afoxé. The only thing in Recife to compare with its wealth of musical styles is the huge congregation of amateur footballers on its southern beaches, for football in Brazil borders on a religion for adults and children alike. Boa Viagem is the name of Recife’s main city beach, which can admired from the skyline alongside it as it stretches into the distance. But very beautiful too are the city’s other beaches – Maracaipe, Gaibu, Porto de Galinhas, Muro Alto, María Farinha and Itamaracá. Their sandy coves lined with woods are rich in coral and good for kayaking, surfing and skindiving. For divers, in fact, there is nowhere in Brazil like Porto de Galinhas. In the meantime, Recife itself also has a port where cruise liners call. The architecture of the neighbouring town of Olinda, once its rival, is now a World Heritage Site, while Igarassu, 29 kilometres to the north, has the oldest church in the country, São Cosme e Damião (1535). And on the island of Itamaracá is Fort Orange, built by the Dutch. These historic places are all within easy reach of Recife, which is not merely monumental in its own right, but has also had fast enough reflexes to convert obsolete buildings with one eye on the future. One case is the City Museum, which occupies Fort Cinco Pontas; another is the mediaeval house that contains the Ricardo Brennand Art Institute; and further examples are the Malakoff Tower, as the observatory was renamed, and the former prison, both now shopping centres. Even the colonial dwellings on the square of São Pedro have been converted into bars and restaurants with an undeniably stylish vocation. The 18th century left Recife with several mansions, like the one occupied by the foundation of the sociologist Gilberto Freyre. The 19th century left the State Museum, the neoclassical Santa Isabel Theatre and the market of São José. And the 20th century left a pride of German engineering called the Zeppelin Tower. Erected between 1715 and 1754, the convent of São Francisco, in Olinda, was the first of this religious order in Brazil. While in the realm of contemporary art, it is well worth visiting the studio of Francisco Brennand, possibly the be-all and end-all among Brazilian art galleries. Among Recife’s other landmarks are the Nassau Bridge and the equally impressive Medicine Memorial. Considering the number of holidays on its calendar, St John’s Day and the New Year being the most festive occasions of all, the question arises of where the people of Recife find time to work and thrive as a mercantile and cultural centre, not just a holiday destination. Are they twice as productive as everyone else, even after partying till they drop? It is a matter of seeing, hearing and enjoying life in Recife, as is the custom of its inhabitants. And it is moreover enough to know that the region of Recife is among those with the best facilities for education, health care and technology in the whole of that giant named Brazil.■ RONDA IBERIA 107 guía / guide RECIFE Vuelos Iberia ofrece, a partir del 1 de febrero, tres vuelos directos a la semana desde Madrid a Recife.
