THE HOLY YEAR OF MERCY
“How appropriate today’s gospel for the Jubilee Year of Mercy, both because of the ‘breakfast Jesus
provides (“a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread”) and the number of fish in Peter’s net (“one hundred
fifty-three”) (John 21:11-12) Of the fish, St. Augustine suggests that the roasted fish is the suffering Christ.
St. Gregory the Great adds that Christ lowered himself to swim in the “water” of our humanity; to be
caught in the “net of our death; to be “roasted” in His Passion on the fire of suffering. St. Jerome claims
that “One hundred fifty-three” represents the full number of known species of fish, signifying that the
Church’s “net” has room for all our widely diverse humanity, securing our unity-in-diversity in the hands of Peter and his
successors. Having received God’s mercy as “the beating heart of the Gospel,” may the Church — we — “pattern our

Third Sunday of Easter

April 10, 2016
“Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches,
wisdom and strength, honor and glory and blessing.”
— Revelation 5:12
Gospel reading (John 20:1-19)
Peter was distressed that Jesus had said to him a third time, ‘Do you love Me?’ and said to Jesus, ‘Lord, you
know everything; you know that I love You.”
Brief commentary
On this third Sunday of the Easter season the Church remembers her origins through
the reading from the book of the Acts of the Apostles, and employs the high Christology
of the book of Revelation to speak of the central mystery of the Christian faith, the
glorious resurrection of Jesus Christ who is “the Lamb that was slain.” For its part the
psalm of one rescued from the clutches of death takes on new and definitive meaning in
the risen Christ, whom the Father raised gloriously from the dead. Each Sunday we
read from the gospels different accounts of the encounters with the risen Christ to his
disciples. Last week the appearance to apostles, gathered in a house in Jerusalem, included Thomas who
had initially doubted the astonishing and unexpected news of his resurrection. Today we read from
John’s gospel about Jesus’ appearance to them where they had first met, at the “Sea of Tiberias” or
Lake of Galilee, the Kinneret. At the start of the narrative the apostles have returned to Galilee
awaiting Jesus to visit them again, and six return with Peter to fish in the lake, just as they used to as
part of their livelihood prior to ever meeting Jesus. Perhaps they were hungry or maybe even longed for
the “good old days” when their lives seemed simple and uncomplicated…we will never know. We do
find a Peter, however, who is influential and decisive: he speaks for himself saying that he is going to
fish, and the others eagerly join him. He is clearly a leader in these narratives, as well as in Luke’s
stories from Acts. It is also Peter who recognizes that the one on the shore instructing them on
successful fishing “is the Lord.” Peter’s joy and love for Jesus compels him to jump impetuously into the
water and swim to shore – he is totally decisive and ready to give his all. The large catch of 153 fish
reminds Peter and the others of the first time Jesus had done such a miracle: the one who was inviting
them for breakfast was the same one who had first called them to follow him. Following their breakfast
of baked fish and bread, Jesus’ triple question to Peter reminds Peter of his shortcomings in having
thrice denied knowing Jesus on the night of his arrest and trial. Peter is saddened at the memory, but
Jesus’ triple question “Do you love me?” and triple commissioning re-affirms Peter and reminds him
that, “he who began a good work in him would bring it to completion.” Above all, the question that
Jesus addressed Simon Peter was not one about Peter’s leadership credentials, his administrative talents
or influence, his cleverness or intelligence, his degrees or prestige, but instead about the condition of his
heart, of his love: “Do you love me more than these?” This was Jesus’ concern and great interest. When
following Jesus, either as leaders and shepherds in the Church, or as one of his many disciples, Jesus
main concern is the same: “Do you love me?” The genuine love for Jesus will naturally lead to a genuine
love and concern for the sheep and lambs. Today Jesus calls us, as he did Peter and the apostles,
“Follow me.”
Today’s reading offers three significant messages:
♦ In the Easter season the Church immerses herself in the
great mystery that gave birth to her and life to the world,
the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. At the same time she
remembers her beginnings by reading and reflecting
upon stories of her first communities.
♦ Today’s readings also give witness to the apostles and
disciples of Jesus, Peter, and the men and women who
first proclaimed the gospel to the nations.
♦ Jesus’ main criteria for discipleship, for ministry and
leadership in his Church is love: “Do you love me?”
More than anything else each one of us must make sure
that it is love of Christ and people that is the heart,
energy, motive and impulse of our Christian lives.
For our shared or personal reflection:
After a brief pause for silent reflection share your answers, ideas or
feelings.
1. What can I do to re-ground myself in the roots of the
Church so that my identity as a member of the
Church would be further strengthened and
developed, and be more fruitful?
2. How am I a witness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ?
3. Is Jesus the love of my life?

Tercer Domingo de Pascua
Page Seven
