THE GOOD SHEPHERD
The Good Shepherd not only knows us but has
given his life for us. We belong to the Shepherd. His life is the source of our life. One part
of this relationship is firm—God’s part. The
Father has entrusted us to the Son, and the
Son will not let go of our hand.
The other part of this relationship depends on us, of
course. In today’s Gospel, Jesus assumes our openhearted good will. “My sheep hear my voice . . . and they
follow me.” This hearing and following is a daily undertaking that implies responsibility. Take Paul and Barnabas, for
example. They moved ever closer to the reality that salvation was also meant for those members of the flock who
did not yet know God’s saving power. The Gentiles were
the sheep known by the Shepherd. Paul could finally see
that now was the acceptable time for them to know the
Shepherd. Now the circle could be completed. Finally,
those who were known and loved by the God of Jesus
could know and follow the God of Jesus. There will never

EL BUEN PASTOR
El Buen Pastor no sólo nos conoce sino que da
su vida por nosotros. Le pertenecemos. Su vida
es la fuente de nuestra vida. Una parte de esta
relación es firme –la parte de Dios. El Padre
nos ha confiado al Hijo, y el Hijo no nos soltará
la mano.
La otra parte de esa relación depende de nosotros, por
supuesto. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús asume que aceptamos su voluntad con el corazón abierto. “Mis ovejas oyen mi
voz… y me siguen”. Este oír y seguir es una tarea diaria que
implica responsabilidad. Tomemos por ejemplo a Pablo y a
Bernabé. Ambos estaban convencidos de que la salvación
era también para aquellos miembros del rebaño que aún no
conocían el poder salvador de Dios. Los gentiles eran las
ovejas que el Pastor conocía. Pablo pudo finalmente ver que
ahora era el momento oportuno para ellos conocer al Pastor.
Ahora el círculo se cerraría. Finalmente, aquellos a quienes
el Dios de Jesús conocía y amaba, podrían conocer y seguir
al Dios de Jesús. Nunca habrá un último capítulo en esta

This Academy Award nominated documentary depicts some
of the world’s first “climate refugees” - inhabitants of the
Carteret Islands just north of Bougainville, Papua New
Guinea.
Following the film presentation, there will be a
facilitated discussion about the film and action
steps that you can take in response - steps that
are based in authentic Catholic Teaching. The
event will provide a concrete example of responding to the questions posed by Pope Benedict XVI in
his 2010 World Day of Peace Message: “Can we remain
indifferent before the problems associated with such realities as climate change... Can we disregard the growing
phenomenon of ‘environmental refugees’...”
The program is sponsored by the Catholic Coalition on
Climate Change, a national Catholic partnership of organizations whose members include, among others, the U.S.
Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Mothers’ Day Novena
In celebration of Mothers’ Day, we will have a Novena
of Masses. The series of 9 Masses will begin with the
Anticipated Mass of Sunday at 5:00 PM on Saturday,
May 11th and include every Mass on Sunday, May
12th (Mothers’ Day) through the Daily Mass of Thursday, May 16th. Beginning this weekend, we are accepting donations for this Novena. Special envelopes are in
the mailed packets and are available on the table in the vestibule.

Catholic Home Mission Appeal
Special Collection Next weekend
There are over 80 home mission dioceses in the United States.
One way the Catholic Home Missions Appeal works to support
home mission is by supporting seminarian formation in poor
dioceses. Often home mission priests and lay ministers require
special training to attend to the unique needs of their faith
communities. Your support is needed. Please help strengthen

State Tuition Assistance available
for students who transfer to Catholic Schools
from a failing “D” or “F” Public School
Students who are currently attending “failing” (“D” or “F”)
public schools, or children in military families (must be Arizona resident) attending any public school in Arizona may
apply for funding to help pay for tuition at a Catholic
school. The deadline for applications for Empowerment
Scholarship Accounts (ESA’s) for 2013/14 school year is
May 1, 2013. While the monies allocated by the state will
not cover full tuition, they will provide significant assistance
in meeting this cost. Families who enroll in our school also
are expected to participate in the necessary fund raisers
the school has in order to generate the needed additional
funds to cover the cost to educate a child (which is more
than our tuition rate).

admissions packets are available at any of our Catholic

Our Kiosk/Gift Shop has sadly lost its popularity. Therefore, we are having a “going out of business” sale continuing until we have liquidated all of our inventory. We
will, however, continue to sell Just Coffee and our
famous St. Cyril T-Shirts and tote bags.
It is time to start thinking about our upcoming
“Garage Sale.” Our sale will be on Friday and Saturday, June 7th and 8th from 8:00 AM until 3:00 PM. We
will begin accepting articles which are in good condition, beginning June 3rd from 10:00 AM until 2:00
PM. We are in need of volunteers to help with accepting, sorting and selling items. If you are interested
please contact Mary Ann at the Parish Office.
And, finally, our annual Feast Day Raffle Celebration will take place on Saturday,
June 22nd at 6:00 PM. The evening will
again be a Casino Night. Raffle tickets will
be on sale beginning May 1st. Tickets are
$10 each or 6 for $50. All 5 prizes are cash awards with the
top prize again being $5000.
Our Development Advisory Board has been coming up
