Nota de Gracias de la banda
There’s nothing that can make you more nervous than taking on a challenge that pushes you past what you
thought you were capable of. However, nothing is more rewarding than accomplishing a goal that pushed
you further than you’ve ever been pushed. The Lincoln Middle School Band is currently clawing their way to
Disney World. They are playing music that can sometimes be harder than high school band music, and they
are putting in extra time to really represent District 98 and all of Berwyn well. During spring break, the band
will take a 5 day, 4 night trip to Disney World to compete in a National Competition! We want to thank
everyone for their support, whether it was from donations, attending our concerts, or just giving us
encouragement during tough times. We could NOT go on this trip without the support of everyone, and we
know that we will make you proud in our efforts. Please attend our next concert on March 10th at 6:30 P.M
at Lincoln Middle School.—Tom Chester, Band Director
No hay nada que te puede hacer más nervioso que adquirir un reto que te empuja más allá de lo que creas que
eras capaz de hacer. Sin embargo, no hay nada más gratificante que lograr una meta que te empuja más de lo
que nunca has sido empujado. La banda de la escuela Lincoln está trabajando hacia su camino a Disney World.

Berwyn North District 98 Explores Language Academy
This year represents the second year of work towards Berwyn North District 98’s Five Year Long Range Plan.
Berwyn North School District 98’s Dual Language Committee has been working for over a year researching various
models. There are many models and many hybrids of those models. The Committee is reviewing what may be the
best model that will meet the needs of the District 98 community. Implementation of the Language Academy will
begin at the pre-school and kindergarten levels. This program will provide our students with the opportunity to
learn how to read, write and communicate effectively in an English and Spanish language setting while achieving
high level of academic success.
Implementation of the Language Academy Program would begin at the Pre-school-Kindergarten levels and a
grade level will be added each year, ensuring students receive an exciting and challenging educational
opportunity where they will gain the bilingual skills needed to succeed in an increasingly connected global world.
The program follows BND98’s core curriculum and supports a language-rich environment in which students are
constantly communicating, creating, collaborating and using critical thinking skills. As students advance in the
program, they will demonstrate proficiency in both languages, navigating complex academic material in English

Este año representa el segundo año de trabajo hacia el plan de largo plazo de Cinco Años del Distrito 98.

School Survey / Encuesta de Las Escuelas
From January 11 through March 18, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) will conduct a required
survey of learning conditions, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. The Illinois 5Essentials Survey identifies five
indicators that lead to important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score
gains. Please take the survey to further help our schools and improve our students learning.

District 98 Super Spellers!
We had eight extremely bright students who
demonstrated their fantastic spelling skills. The winner
was Lesly Duran, a 7th grader in Mr. Bruton’s class!
The second place winner was Sophia Castaneda in
Mrs. Bauer’s class at Jefferson. Lesly won in the 36th
round and the championship word was: mawkish.
Lesly will represent District 98 in the Regional Spelling
Bee on February 17th.

Tuvimos ocho estudiantes brillantes que demostraron
sus habilidades fantásticas de deletrear. La ganadora
fue Lesly Duran, de séptimo grado en la clase del
Sr. Bruton! La ganadora del segundo lugar fue

Mr. Adam Bautista, at Jefferson was highlighted in the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) magazine and
catalog. He was one of the teachers who attended the professional development in our district and used the IEW
materials to teach the district curriculum. Our ELA teachers worked very hard on building the ELA curriculum
which includes writing and writing is one of our major focus areas this year. He and other teachers had some
amazing results.

Miss Quintana has received the SHAPE America-Mabel Lee Award for the Best New Physical Education
Teacher of the Year. This award is given to the best, most effective physical education teacher in the nation,
who has been teaching less than 5 years in the profession. She has received awards beginning at the local
regional level, then the state level, then the Midwest regional level, and now she is the national winner! She
will be traveling to Minnesota in April to receive her most prestigious award!
La señorita Quintana ha recibido el premio de SHAPE América-Mabel Lee de Mejor Maestro de Educación
Física del Año Nuevo. Este premio se otorga a el mejor, más eficaz, maestro de educación física en la nación,
que ha estado enseñando menos de 5 años en la profesión. ¡Ha recibido premios empezando a nivel local,
regional, nivel de estado, después al nivel regional del Medio Oeste, y ahora es ganadora nacional! En abril
viajara a Minnesota para recibir su premio más prestigioso.

Taller Para Padres
Queridos Padres,
En marzo, presentaremos un nuevo programa de padres titulado, YOU: EL primer maestro de su
hijo. Este programa guía a los padres desde el nacimiento de su hijo hasta la graduación de la
escuela secundaria y más allá y muestra cómo desarrollar la lectura temprana y ayuda con la
preparación universitaria y profesional en casa. Acompáñenos y juntos vamos a aprender las
herramientas necesarias que nuestros hijos necesitan para aumentar su potencial. El curso
consta de 2 talleres, cada uno es de 2 horas de duración y son bilingüe en Inglés y Español. Para
recibir materiales gratuitos, debe asistir a dos talleres. Cuidado de niños estará disponible.

In March, we will be introducing a new Parent Program titled, YOU: Your Child’s First Teacher.
This program guides parents from the birth of their child through high school graduation and
beyond while showing how to develop early literacy and college and career readiness at home.
Come join us and together we will learn the necessary tools that our children need to increase
their potential. The course consists of 2 workshops, each one is 2 hours long and
Bilingual in English and Spanish. In order to receive free materials, you must attend both
workshops. Childcare will be available. The date and location are still pending. Please keep an
