Utila`s Centro de Salud has become a hot
topic in the community in recent weeks.
Controversy began last month when Dr:
Matilde Alvarado organized
a meeting
to form an internal committee which would
supposedly function as a support group for
the public health center. The meeting however, clearly reflected the political division
that was created during last year´s November election and continues to gnaw at some
members in the community.
Both the mayor, Alton Cooper and president
of Centro de Salud board of directors asked
that the meeting be rescheduled, Their request was not granted and the meeting proceeded. Needless to say, members of the
Liberal (red) party left after the mayor`s request to postpone the meeting was denied.
In the meeting Dr. Alvarado discussed various issues such as:
- medication and lack of
- consultation fees
- administration of finances
A few hours after the meeting the mayor and
Lance Bodden spoke live on local station
HQtv and made some necessary clarifications for the public in general.
Things continued to steam in the following
days that led up to January 25, the date that
marked the beginning of another 4 year term

for re-elected mayor, Alton Cooper.
Minutes after being sworn in along with
other members that form the municipal
corporation, a peaceful manifestation was
organized and participants walked to the
Centro de Salud and demanded that it be
closed until a new board of directors could
be elected. After several hours of discussion
between local authorities, a legal consultant
and the doctor in charge of the health center,
the medical team packed their belongings
and left the premises without any acts of aggression by spectators (contrary to reports
of violent behavior).
Days later, Bay Islands Health Director,
Dra. Martha Medina along with sindicato
(union) president Jorge Trochez and other
health workers from Roatan arrived to hold
meetings and negotiations.
A cabildo abierto (public meeting) was held
in the center of town and those present voted
in favor of a change in the board of directors
with the exception of Lance Bodden who
received the support of the community and
was elected to continue being president of
the board of directors.
Due to lack of maturity and professionalism, the meeting ended abruptly when Jorge
Trochez, union leader, had a temper tantrum
and left the stage in an altered state. Several

others tagged behind him while the majority
of the public congratulated the newly elected board of directors.
There are still some unresolved issues concerning the public health center and currently it is functioning on a 2 month trial basis.
After this period of time further decisions
will be made, until then, the Centro de Salud
continues to serve the community as it has
in past years.

NEWSINBRIEF
Robbed again
Archie Henderson was robbed in La Ceiba for the second time. Archie was crossing Serraping Bridge on his motorbike when the driver of a white truck drove
across the road to block him. Two armed men jumped out of the back of the truck
and told him to “pass the bag”. Archie passed them the bag and the bandits took
off.
Archie did not get hurt in the incident and all the robbers got was a bag full of
paperwork, none of which were too important. Rosalita said, “No more Ceiba,
we’ll use the phone!”
Robbery in La Ceiba
Gerard, who runs Munchies with his wife, was eating at a restaurant in La Ceiba
near the center on Tuesday the 7th at about 6.30pm. Two local males walked in
and ordered a Coke and suddenly the two guys started yelling, pulled their guns
and told everybody to get on the floor. Gerard moved towards the stairs and was
told at gunpoint to get down.
They robbed about 3 people in the restaurant, all of them Latinos. Two taxi drivers were stripped of all their valuables plus their cell phones. During the robbery
someone managed to phone the police but they failed to show up until 20 minutes after the robbers had left.
Wounded man taken to Ceiba
Jose Portillo was found outside Thompson bakery unconscious. “It looked like he
had just fallen down and he strongly smelled of alcohol,” said Dan Sweeney. Two tourist girls took the guy
to the clinic. Jose was having seizures, he was vomiting blood and he had cuts and bruises on his forehead.
He was stabilized at the clinic but he didn’t regain
consciousness. Dr. John took him to La Ceiba. Portillo’s friends say that the victim woke up the following
morning and walked out of the hospital. He claimed
he was beaten up but Dr. John reckons it was alcohol related.
Car hits baleada stand
Larry aka Ruggie, LLM, Tumpie aka Grinche and Moises were talking when
they suddenly heard a very loud noise. As they turned
around they noticed one of Utila’s delivery trucks coming straight at them, fast. Moises was standing behind a
tree and didn’t see the truck coming. Tumpie and Ruggie
jumped out of the way. “I barely has time to step back and
the car missed me by four inches and crashed through the
Monkey Tail Inn sign, pulling it out of the ground,” said
Moises. It tore down Dona Hilda’s Baleadas stand and
finally came to a stop against a cement base. Fortunately, nobody got hurt.

Another accident
John Humenson (Doc Rail) and Kurt Whitefield were involved
in an accident. Due to this Kurt received pretty serious wounds
to his leg and had to be taken to La Ceiba by Celine.
He is recovering well as is Doc’s golfcart which was also injured. Doc Rail was the only one get out of the accident unhurt.
Robbed on airport road
On Sunday the 29th of January Oscar Gabourel went to the airport with his
wife Peggy to give her driving lessons. When they got to “the terminal” a
Carib guy was waving at them to stop and they did. He asked them directions
to Pumpkin Hill. They started explaining it to him and before they could finish
the guy grabbed Peggy’s purse and took off on his bike.
Back in town they reported the incident to the Policia Preventiva. The police
went to the airport but couldn’t find him. In the evening they brought in a guy
and Mr. Gabourel identified him as the thief. He had taken all the cash out
of the purse. “The guy was put on the boat the next day and told not to come
back,” said Mr. Gabourel. “We did get our I.D. back and thankfully nobody
got hurt.”

Leg injury at BGA bank
Nathan Chambers, 27, from Australia pushed the BGA door
to get out and stepped forward. Instead of opening, as you
have to pull it instead of push, he hit the door with his leg. He
didn’t hit it hard but the glass in the door broke and sliced him
instantly. “Everyone in the bank stared at me.” Eventually the
guard made him sit down. A lady in the bank suggested he go
to the doctor and have his leg looked at.
He decided to go home and wash the wound. The cut didn’t
look to bad but it did hurt so he went to Dr. John. He cleaned
it again and realized that a tendon had been severed. Nathan
was sent to La Ceiba where he underwent general anesthetic
and spent 1 night in the hospital. He is back on Utila now waiting to get his cast
off in about 1 month.

Utila as the garbage collection is still not efficient. With
the arrival of the new garbage truck it will get better.
▼▼
The desalination project is
resuming. On the 15th of February three companies came
to Utila to bid on the contract

six to eight weeks. The project
is projected to be finished in
June\July for when it is needed most as it will be very dry
around that time.

requested for the document to
be “layman’s terms “ so that
everybody can understand it.

About six months ago the director of the American organization MIRA was on Utila to
introduce a recycling plan for
the island. This involves setting up a center on Utila and
getting compacting machines.
La llegada del nuevo camión
de basura ha sido retrasada.
La camión todavía esta en la
aduana y el alcalde espera que
llegue en la semana del 27 de
febrero.
▼▼
El proyecto de desalinización
se continúa. El 15 de febrero
personas de tres differentes
compañías llegaron a Utila

a ocho semanas y terminará en
Junio/Julio, para cuando lo
necesitan mas como será muy
seco durante esos meses.
▼▼
comunidad.

Love on the rock
Utila East Wind
March 2006
By Miss Annie
As we all know February 14, Valentine’s
Day is a day to celebrate love, so this month
I decided to take time out and visit several
couples who have been married for half a
century or more. While some of their opinions vary on exactly what has kept them together throughout the years, they all share a
common bond: LOVE
A 4 letter word with a vast array of definitions but also a word that represents the
most fundamental element in a relationship.
Many of these couples have faced hardships over the years including poverty and
loss of children but as one couple clearly
stated “ Any relationship based on love can
work, because love bears all things, believes
all things, hopes all things and endures all
things. “
Congratulations to all these couples who are
clearly living examples that true love does
exist!!
Como todos sabemos el 14 de Febrero es
el día de amor y la aministad. Así que este
mes decidí tomar tiempo para visitar algunas parejas que estan casadas medio siglo ó
mas.
amor existe!!

New help for people who stutter
By Juan Fernandez
What do Bruce Willis, Marilyn Monroe, Julia Roberts, Winston Churchill and King George VI of England have in common? They are just a few of the famous people who have
suffered from stuttering. Unfortunately, stuttering is still
mocked and ridiculed in movies and on TV. A good example
is the Porky Pig cartoon in which the character’s bad speech
is targeted for ridicule. Movies such as A Fish Called Wanda
and My Cousin Vinny also come to mind.
Stuttering is a fact of life for 1% of the total adult world
population, including some 70,000 people in Honduras. It
is estimated that 4% of the child population suffers from
this problem as well. Many try speech therapies but are not
always successful.
Juan Carlos Baumgarten, a computer software engineer,
remembers coming to the U.S. at the age of ten and having to go to speech therapy classes in a Los Angeles area
public school. “The actual therapy did not help me at all.
It some ways it was a waste of time because it raised my
hopes for fluency. I think I would have been better off without any therapy at that point.” However, Baumgarten credits his speech therapist in high school with turning his life
around. “This guy’s name was Mitchell and he helped me
immensely. We never really did any actual speech therapy
during my sessions with him. Maybe he knew that his therapy would not actually help me. Instead, he told me about all
the famous people who have struggled with stuttering and
overcame it. It really inspired me. Mr. Mitchell also encouraged me to pursue my hobbies – like drumming, acting and
learning foreign languages. I set goals for myself and they
have resulted in my success.”
Now, many years later, Baumgarten has, for the most part,
overcome his stuttering. Some years ago he followed another
speech therapy program and this time it was successful. He
is energized by the opportunities he sees as the result of the
new Spanish-language website launched by the Stuttering
Foundation of America, www.tartamudez.org. Baumgarten
feels that the best part about it is the list of reputable speech
therapists that people can consult. He thinks that their list of
“Famous People Who Stutter” will serve as an inspiration to
young people struggling with the problem.
Malcolm Fraser, who himself struggled with stuttering during his life and wanted to help other people who stutter,
founded the National Stuttering Foundation of America in
1947. The Foundation serves as a resource for people who
stutter and people whose children, relatives or friends stut-
ter. Ms. Fraser, Malcom’s daughter and vice-president of the
foundation, states the Foundation’s purpose in launching the
new Spanish-language version of their website; ”We hope
to reach out to the growing number of people in the U.S.
whose preferred language is Spanish… and, in some cases,
whose only language is Spanish. We also have high hopes
of reaching more people around the globe to let them know
about our free services and videos, DVDs and books.”
Fraser is optimistic about the effect of the new website in
Latin America. “There are probably fewer therapists in
those countries, but things are really picking up in Brazil
and Argentina thanks to the wonderful people who attended
the SFA’s two week training course at Northwestern University in Chicago. They have gone back to those countries,
translated our materials, and organized clinics, improved
services in hospitals and schools, and even gotten support
groups organized.”
Keeping with the intentions of its founder, the late Malcolm
Fraser, the Stuttering Foundation of America distributes material on stuttering free of charge.
Go to www.tartamudez.org or www.stutteringhelp.org for
more information.
“Nueva ayuda para personas que tartamudean”
Que tienen Bruce Willis, Marilyn Monroe, Julia Roberts,
Winston Churchill y el Rey George VI de Inglaterra en
común? Son algunas de las personas famosas que han tenido problemas con la tartamudez. Desafortunadamente,
tartamudez todavía es burlado en películas y en la Tele
por ejemplo en los dibujos animados de “Porky Pig”. En
esta serie burlan la manera de habla del carácter principal. Películas como “A Fish Called Wanda” y “My Cousin
enormemente. Realmente nunca hicimos mucho de terapia
del habla durante mis sesiones con el. Quizás sabía que su
terapia no podría ayudarme.
Me puse metas
las cuales han resultado en mi éxito.”
Ahora, muchos anos después, Baumgarten ha superado
la tartamudez casi completamente. Hace unos anos hizo
Foundation of America, www.tartamudez.org. Baumgarten
The Foundation sirve como recurso
Malcolm Fraser, the Stuttering Foundation of America distribuya materiales sobre tartamudez gratis. Visita www.
tartamudez.org o www.stutteringhelp.org para más información.

After a pretty fierce rainstorm on the 21st of January at around
4.30 PM Dellmark Woods (9) and Fred McNab (3) discovered a
large black ball at the bottom of their grandmother’s stairs at Blue
Bayou. The ball was about three feet high and had a hard surface,
which was covered in dried seaweed.
The boys didn’t know what it was.
Dellmark said “I was freaked out
when I saw it.”
They didn’t know what to do with it
so they decided to push it under the
bush. Dellmark told Fred to keep an
eye on the ball whilst he ran to his
aunt’s house (about 50 yards away)
to get her. His aunt was not home so
he ran back to his grandma’s house
where his brother was still waiting
for him and keeping an eye on the
ball under the bush. Dellmark raced
to his grandma’s house to get his uncle. The two of them went down to
look at this ball.
When they got outside the ball was
gone. The only thing that was left
under the bush was a bit of dried up

seaweed. When Dellmark asked Fred where
the ball&was
he said,
“The little Boo Boo’s took him.
” They all searched around for the ball but couldn’t find it. They
asked Fred again and he told them the same, that little Boo Boo’s
took the ball. Fred also said that when they took it the Boo Boo’s
made a noise like “blienknaienklikglie” before they took it up.
pelota decidieron ponerlo debajo

wall near the famous Chinese wall on which tourist can write their name
for $120. It decided to do
this because the real Chinese wall is in danger of being damaged by
graffiti and scratching by some of the four
million visitors (per year) that go to see the
wall.
Gay penguins stay together
Six male Humboldt
penguins in a zoo in
Germany don’t want
to have anything to
do with female penguins. Even if there
are enough female
penguins around in the
breeding season the males form pairs with
each other and ignore the females. Last year
many gay organizations around the world
reacted strongly when the zoo introduced
females to the male group for the first time.
The organization felt that the penguins
shouldn’t be forced to be with females. The
zoo said it just wanted to check if the males
were together due to a lack of females. It has
decided to leave the six penguins together.

New reef discovered in Thailand
Divers of the World Wildlife
Foundation have discovered an
unknown reef on the coast of
Thailand. Local fisherman told
the divers about this reef and the
divers went there to map about
270 acres of reef. This ‘new’ reef
lies on the coast of Phanh Nga
and the divers say it is relatively
healthy. They also found about 110 species
of fish among which a type of Parrotfish that
has never been seen in Thailand before.
Together with the Thai authorities the WWF
will try to make a plan for the reef, which
might include tourism.

Swedish ski federation in financial trouble
due to success
The Swedish ski federation did not believe
in their athletes too much as they put the
limit of premiums for medallion at 57.700
Euro for the Winter Olympics. About
14.000 Euro for Gold medals, 11.500 Euro
for Silver and 9000 for Bronze. The Swedish however, did a lot better than that. The
langlaufers alone won three gold and two
bronze medals, a total of more than 60.000
Euro. The federation said that they can not
exceed their budget but the athletes are not
satisfied with this. “A promise is a promise,”
said one of the medal winners.

The endangered Utila Iguana
By Annelies Davis, Gilda Ordoñez Ortega, Aurel Heidelberg
Every month we will discuss an animal iguana in town or in your garden it is probliving on Utila in the Iguana Research and ably a Highlander.

noon between 2-5PM.
Swampers spend almost their entire life in
the 8 km² of Utila’s mangrove forests. During the breeding time (March and April) female Swampers lay their eggs on the beaches
but, like most reptiles, they do not look after
their eggs or young. After a few months the
hatchlings emerge from the eggs and walk
back to the mangrove forests. Swampers
live in and on mangrove trees. On sunny
mornings you can often see them high up
in the tree, enjoying the sun. On rainy or
cloudy days you will not see Swampers in
the trees, because without the sun rays they
cannot reach their body temperature so they
are not very active. They are reptiles and
therefore need to warm up in the sun, but
during midday, when it is too hot, they hide
in their holes. Swampers have a special living area compared to other iguana species as
most iguana species live in dry and hot areas, like savannah or deserts. With a length
of about 0.8 meter (2.6 feet) the Swamper
is relatively small. The green iguana (scientific name Iguana iguana) for instance
can be at least twice as big. The colour of
the Swamper is mainly brown or grey and
younger animals are different shades of
brown. Male Swampers have big spines on
their back and females have smaller spines
and are a bit smaller. Their diets include
mangrove leaves and flowers, insects and
fiddler crabs.

mangle; insectos y cangrejos violinistas.

Obesity on the rise
By Utila East Wind
Being overweight is becoming a big problem all over the world. Every time you flick
through the TV channels there will be at
least one show discussing the problem. According to the WHO (World Health Organization) there are 1 billion overweight adults
worldwide of which at least 300 million are
obese but it is not just a problem adults deal
with. About 22 million children under five
are estimated to be overweight worldwide.
We can define overweight by using the body
mass index (BMI). This is the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height
in meters (i.e. 76 kg/1.70 X 1.70=26.29). In
imperial it is the weight in pounds divided
by the by the square of the height in inches
times 703. A BMI of 18.4 or less is defined
as underweight, between 18.5 and 24.9 as
normal, more 25-29.5 as overweight and
more than 30 as obese. Keep in mind that
you will have to take your body frame and
built into account.
The WHO states that obesity and being
overweight are a big risk for chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and
certain forms of cancer. It says that the main
causes for being overweight are increased
consumption of energy-dense foods high in
saturated fats and sugars and too little or no
physical activity.
What are saturated fats and unsaturated
fats?
Saturated fats are generally solid at room
temperature and usually come from animals. You can find saturated fats in lard,
butter, cheese, whole milk, margarine and
products with these as an ingredient (cookies, pies, pastries etc). The white fat that can
be found on red meat and under poultry skin
is also unsaturated. This fat is better to avoid
as a high intake of it
has been linked to a
higher risk of coronary heart disease.
Unsaturated
fats
are generally liquid at room temperature and usually
come from vegetables. These fats are
healthier than saturated fats. They are
found in vegetable
oils such as sesame,
sunflower and olive oil, some types of fish
(salmon, sardines, mackerel etc) and soft
margarine.
According to health guidelines we shouldn’t
consume more than 35 percent of what we
eat in fats. This equals about 76 grams of
fat for adult women and about 100 gram for
adult men.
Sugars can also have a negative effect on our
health. Especially if consumed in large quantities. Sugars are carbohydrates and provide
energy (calories). All carbohydrates, except
fibers, are broken down into sugars during
digestion. Many foods that also supply other
nutrients already supply us with sugar, think
of milk, fruits, bread, cereal, grains, etc. So
we want to be careful with the extra amount
of sugar we use every day.
What can we change in out diets:
- Instead of frying - try poaching, steaming,
grilling and baking instead.
- Swap whole milk for semi-skimmed or
skimmed alternatives.
- As a snack eat fresh fruit
- Get rid of the fat around meat and poultry
when preparing it
- Use lean cuts of meat and low fat minces.
- Replace lard, butter and margarine with
vegetal oil
Taking care of your body does not only have
to do with what you eat. Exercise is also
very important. Taking care of your body
does not only have to do with what you eat.
Exercise is also very important. Make time
in every day to do some form of physical activity. Walking is a perfect form of physical
activity and it is one that almost everyone
can do. Swimming is another easy one especially on Utila as we are right on the ocean.
Every little bit will help and combined with
a healthier diet it will improve your health
and you might loose some pounds by doing
it.
Según el WHO (World Health
BMI (body mass index).
dividimos
esto
por su altura 1.70
cuadrado (1.70 X
1.70 = 2.80) para
llegar a un BMI
Grasas no saturadas normalmente quedan
líquidos en temperatura ambiente. Estas
grasas son mas sanas que grasas saturadas.
Las podemos encontrar en aceites vegetales
como aceite sésamo, de aceitunas, girasol,
en algunas tipos de pez (salmón, sardinas,
caballa) y margarina blanda.
AzuOverweight and Obesity in

dieta:

Spermwhale sighting on Utila
By Tonia Woods
I’ve lived on this island all of my life. I’m 53 years old, and
I have always had the desire to “SEE” a whale shark.
So on the 2nd of February I was invited by Mikey and Michele
to join them on a whale “hunt” safari. As I boarded Captain Danito Jackson’s speedboat that morning, I had no way
of knowing what an adventure was in store for us. The day
started off slow. It seemed that our boat was being slapped
about by the waves. By the time we got to the East end of the
island, I must admit that I was feeling a little seasick.
We steamed around for almost 2 hours, and whenever any
one of us would remark about not seeing a whale shark,
Mikey would say “patience, it is not His hour yet” so we
knew we had to keep looking.Every now and then we would
see a few tunas flipping. But then suddenly, Captain Danito
said “I think I see a whale in the distance.”
We could see water spraying up in the air and instantly the boat was
in full gear headed toward the whale. The burst of excitement immediately cured my queasy stomach.
As we approached her, the sight of the enormous whale was simply
breathtaking. It literally left us speechless. To see a 40 foot sperm
whale floating in the open ocean was awesome. Then all of the sudden someone shouted “Look! Look over there!” and there was another sperm whale, and another and another. Our first encounter with
the sperm whales lasted over an hour. The more of these amazing
whales we saw, the more our emotions grew!
Not to be greedy, but we had set out to find whale sharks, not whales.
And find them we did. After we had encountered over a dozen sperm
whales we spotted a “boil”
of small tunas called bonita
churning the sea in the distance. Captain Danito said
confidently “Be ready, we
are going to find a whale
shark here.” Seconds later a
long gray shadow appeared
among the large school
of bonita thrashing on the
surface. Then its dorsal fin
and wide head pierced the
surface close enough that
we could clearly see them.
Suddenly, there I was entering the sea and swimming
toward the world’s biggest

fish (which also happened to be a shark)! Although each of the whale
sharks I saw that day appeared like giants to me, Danito and Mikey
assured me that these were young sharks that were likely to be “shy”
around snorkelers. Before another migrating sperm whale caught our
attention, we were treated to three more wonderful in-water experiences with the graceful tiburon ballena (whale shark). What an amazing thrill!
Later, we were fortunate enough to observe (photograph and make
a video of) another mother whale and her calf. At one point while
we were near Pumpkin Hill, two very large adult whales approached
from some distance away and came alongside the mother and calf.
As the four whales remained on the surface spouting spray high into
the air, the calf was securely
protected between its tremendous bodyguards. While
we observed them from a distance, we could actually hear
the whales exhale. The sound
of those massive animals
breathing was truly amazing.
What happened then was, I
suppose, the highlight of the
day for me. During our next
encounter, I had the opportunity to actually swim with a large adult
whale that was swimming slowly on the surface. At first I was hesitant to go into the sea with the whale. But then I said to myself, “This
is the chance of a lifetime.” So I quickly put on my mask and snorkel
and slid into the water. On the same morning I was fortunate enough
to swim with the magnificent whales three different times! The pure
excitement of seeing so many whales was overwhelming. By the time
our count grew to 25, we were grinning from ear to ear.
This day I will never forget. I thank God (and Mikey and Michele)
for giving me the privilege to not only “see” whales, but to enter the
sea and snorkel along with them. On our way home, all I could think
of was telling my husband, C.J., and my Granddaughter, Tamir, about
my day of adventure swimming with the great whales that visited
Utila.
The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is the largest
toothed whale. This enormous marine mammal has been
portrayed frequently in art and literature as a symbol of the
great whales, and is best known as the leviathan Moby Dick in
Melville’s novel. Sperm whales are among the deepest diving
cetaceans and are found in all oceans of the world.
The head of the sperm whale is blunt and squared off, and has
a small, underslung jaw. The head of the sperm whale is disproportionately large and makes up to 1/3 of the total body length.
It houses a large reservoir containing spermaceti, a clear liquid
oil long prized by whalers. The sperm whale also has the largest brain (appr 22 lbs/10 kilos) among all mammals. The single
blow hole is located forward on the left side of its head, and the
“blow”, is projected forward.
Its main source of food is medium-sized deepwater squid, but it
also feeds on fish, skate, and octopus. A sperm whale consumes
about one ton (907 kg) of food a day. The lower jaw contains
up to 60 large teeth each measuring from 5 to 8 inches in
length. The upper jaw contains a series of sockets into which
the lower teeth fit.
Sperm whales have been known to remain submerged for over
an hour before returning to the surface to spout (breathe). See

night dives and really
are a nighttime treat. The
variety of corals here
give a colorful backdrop
to lots of invertebrates
such as coral shrimp,
Banded claw shrimp,
Cryptic Teardrop Crabs
and Lobsters. One of
the most exciting finds
at nighttime and a fairly
common one is of the
Caribbean Reef Octopus. Roaming at night
it moves across coral
heads and envelops them
with its tentacles. It feels
around for any unfortunate fish, crab or shrimp
trapped below, which
he will then eat. For the
diver who doesn’t interrupt too much with their
lights the Octopus will
change color and texture putting on one of
nature’s most amazing
displays. Whichever site
you visit or whatever direction you dive in try
to surface by your boat
as traffic here can be
quite heavy. Enjoy your
dives.

Seawater is about 800 times more dense than
air.
a fixed mass of a gas is inversely proportional to the pressure. Gas volumes expand when the pressure decreases and
contract when pressure increases. Simply said this means
that when you increase the pressure on a gas (descending to
depth) the volume will decrease requiring gas to be added to
the container for it to remain at its normal size. Then when
you decrease the pressure (ascend to the surface) the volume
of gas will expand in the container even rupturing it if not
vented.
This is important to divers because when underwater the air
spaces will be under a lot of pressure (think of the lungs,
sinuses and also air spaces in equipment such as your BCD).
Therefor, you need to understand what happens to the air in
these spaces.
In 1690 Edmund Halley patented a diving bell which would
allow the divers to stay under for extended periods of time
as the air could be refilled. The bell is connected to weighted
barrels of air by a pipe which allows the bell to be refilled by
bringing the barrels of air down to be emptied into the bell.
The warm stale air could be removed from the bell through a
vent at the top of the bell.
In the beginning of the next century (1715) John Lethbridge
took it one step further and invented a “diving dress”. It
was basically a big oak barrel with a glass porthole in the
metal spherical helmet and flexible leather sleeves. With this
‘dress’ he was able to work at depths of 60 feet for a maximum time of 34 minutes. Even though this was an improvement it would still not allow replenishment of air.
About three years later John Smeaton, a British engineer,
improved the diving bell by incorporating a hand-operated
pump. The pump was connected to the bell by a hose and
was used to supply fresh compressed air to the diver. It also
had a non-return valve in order to keep the air from going
back up through the hose.
Next month we will check out how diving developed in the
1900’s.
Creature of the month
Squid by Adam Laverty
Class:
Cephalopoda
Family: Loliginidae
Genus: Sepioteuthis
Species: Sepioteuthis sepioidea
Sepioteuthis sepioidea lives in the ocean
waters of Florida and Bermuda through the
West Indian islands and from Venezuela
to Cozumel along the Caribbean shores of
Central America and the northeast of South
America. They live in waters that are relatively clear and shallow to approximately
100 meters deep.
The habitat of reef squids changes according to the squid’s stage of life and size.
Nonbreeding adult squids venture to depths
of 100m and prefer open waters at night opposed to their shoreline home of their days.
Breeding and courting adults spend their
days upon coral reefs at depths of about 1.5
- 8ms which is where we see them on Utila.
Here on Utila Carribean Reef Squids can
be seen at our dive site of the month, Silvergardens, as well as Jack O’neal beach
and Big Rock to name but a few.
Squid are voracious eaters typically consuming 30-60% of their body weight daily.
Prey is caught using the club-like end of
the long tentacles, which are then pulled
towards the mouth supported by the shorter
arms. Like other cephalopods, they have a
strong beak used to cut the prey into parts
so that the raspy tongue, or radula, can be
used to further process the food. They consume small fish, other molluscs, and crustaceans.
The mating rituals of squid are ambiguous
and complex. Like other cephalopods, Caribbean Reef squid, are semelparous; that
is, they die after reproducing. Females lay
their eggs then die immediately after. The
males, however, can fertilize many females
in a short period of time before they die. Females lay the eggs in well-protected areas
scattered around the reefs. After competing
with 2-5 other males, the largest male approaches the female and gently strokes her
with his tentacles. At first she may indicate
her alarm by flashing a distinct pattern, but
the male soon calms her by blowing water
at her and jetting gently away. He returns
repeatedly until the female accepts him,
however the pair may continue this dance
or courting for up to an hour. The male then
attaches a sticky packet of sperm to the female’s body.

You must have tried it when you were a kid. Swimming
down to the bottom of a pool whilst holding your breath.
Nowadays we call this skin diving or free diving and this is
actually the oldest form of diving, which has been practiced
for centuries. Some evidence of this comes from undersea
artifacts found by scientists and the appearance of divers in
ancient drawings.
One of the most famous stories of breath-hold diving from
the early days is the one of Scyllis dating from about 500
BC. The Greek historian Herodotus told this story. Scyllis, a
Greek sailor, used to cut the mooring lines of Persian ships
until one day he was taken prisoner aboard Persian King
Xerxes ship. When he found out that the King was planning
an attack on a Greek flotilla, he grabbed a knife and jumped
overboard. The Persians could not find him and thought he
had drowned. Scyllis was actually underwater with a reed,
which he used for breathing, cutting all the ships in Xerxes’s
fleet loose from the moorings and thus saving the day.
The technique that Scyllis used was limited to about two
feet of water due to the pressure exerted on the reed, which
makes it impossible to breath through it. From there on people started experimenting with more sophisticated materials
and around 1530 the diving bell was invented. This was basically a bucket that trapped air when inverted and allowed
people to stay underwater for longer periods of time. Breathhold divers could use this “underwater air cave” as a base
until the air became too stale and they had to return to the
surface and fresh air.
In 1535 Guglielmo de Lorena created and used what is considered to be the first modern diving bell. It is believed that
the first applications were for commercial sponge fishing.
In 1650 Otto Von Guericke expanded on the diving bell idea
and designed the first working air pump. Robert Boyle used
this air pump to do research on compression and decompression of air, which resulted in Boyle’s law. This law states
that that if the temperature remains constant, the volume of

Black Coral Wall & Silver Gardens by Matt Awty
This months dive site is
actually a combination
of Black Coral Wall and
Silver Gardens. They
are the closest dive sites
to the town on the south
side of the island and are
also close to the lagoon
entrance at Blue Bayou.
Both sites have a shallow mooring in 20feet/
6m of water on top of
the coral shelf that extends back to the shore
some hundred plus feet
away. This shelf is broken up by canyons and
sand patches and is also
covered in soft corals,
sea fans, pillar coral and
even boasts some great
Elkhorn coral growths.
Silver gardens is the dive
site immediately after
Laguna beach, the first
mooring on the south
side. Its mooring is right
on a canyon that boasts
several
pronounced
overhangs
providing
ample hiding places
for a variety of unusual
creatures. It’s not too
difficult to find Green
Morays lurking in the
channel along with resident Large Eyed Toadfish and occasionally
Nurse Sharks have been
found resting there.

New divemaps of Utila
to take home and a
possible reference
for friends interested in visiting Utila
in the future.
Stingray Point
You’re chatting in
the bar with your
mate and you tell
him that you went
diving at The Maze
this morning. He
asks you: “Did you
see the cavern?”
and you answer:
“Oh, I didn’t know
there was one.” Or
an instructor, new to
Utila, is briefing the
class and says: “For
the deep dive we
are going to kneel
down at 100 ft and
then compare depth
gauges.” At the end
of the dive the students ask: “But how
come we only went
to 70 ft?”
Utila attracts a lot
of travelers especially because of its
underwater secrets.
Some visitors stay
for a short period
and have their first
experience
with
diving while others
are here for a much
longer stretch hoping to become Dive
masters, Instructors
or follow particular
interests like u/w
photography, video
or technical diving.
Up until now you
couldn’t find a good
book of dive site
maps on the island.
You could find some
maps here and there
but not a good collection. Rosa A.
Doncel and Ignacio
Gonzalez decided to
take this task upon
them and made a
guide to describe
25 of the most interesting dive sites
on the island in a
simple and clear
way. The book provides a good base
for planning every
dive, making it safer
and therefore more
enjoyable.
The
guide is useful for
professional divers
but also for recreational, technical and
free divers.
You will find that
the dive sites in
the guide are quite
realistic,
detailed
and graphic. Ignacio took the time
together with Rosa
A. Doncel to take
aerial and underwater photos of each
dive site and then
they carefully enhanced the pictures
on the computer.
Each site in the
guide has been accurately marked by
a GPS and includes
its buoy location.
It also contains the
site’s depths, recommendations such as
if the site is suitable
for night dives or
photo opportunities,
highlights interesting points and reminds divers of security measures like
maximum depth for
the drop tank etc.
The guide will cost
20 US and will be
available in March.
Igancio and Rosa
hope that it will not
only be a useful tool
for better diving but
also a good memory
Platicando en el bar
le comentas a alguien que buceaste
en “The maze”
por la mañana. Te
preguntan: Viste la
cueva? Y tu: “No
sabia que hay una
cueva.
El instructor (nuevo
en Utila) va dando
su briefing sobre
el buceo profundo
que van a realizar:
“A 100 ft vamos
a comparar profundimetros.”
Al
salir, los alumnos le
preguntan: por que
solo bajamos hasta
70 ft?
Algunos pasan unos
días haciendo cursos de principiante
o solo buceo recreativo. Otros se
quedan por más
tiempo para hacer
cursos como el DM,
convertirse en Instructor o seguir algún interés personal
como la fotografía
submarina, video o
el buceo técnico.
Hasta ahora era
difícil encontrar una
guía que reuniera la
mayoría de los sitios
de buceo en la isla.
Se podían encontrar
mapas, pero no una
colección ordenada
de ellos.
Rosa A. Doncel e
Ignacio González
decidieron
hacer
una guía con 25 de
los sitos más interesantes de la isla
de una manera simple y clara. El libro
provee información
que será útil para
planear cada buceo
haciéndolo mas
seguro y por lo
tanto mas divertido. La guía será
útil tanto a buceadores profesionales, técnicos como
recreativos.
Encontraras que
los mapas en la
guía son bastante
realistas y detallados. Rosa e
Ignacio hicieron
fotografía aérea
y
subacuatica
de cada sitio.
Después por medio de computadora
desarrollaron las graficas.
Cada sitio en la
guía contiene fotos e información
sobre su localización en GPS,
profundidades,
vida marina y
recomendaciones,
por ejemplo: si el
sitio es apto para
buceo nocturno o
fotografía. Señala
los puntos más
interesantes del
lugar y contiene
información importante acerca
de la profundidad máxima para
el ‘drop tank’ de
manera que no se
dañe el arrecife
etc.
La guía tendrá un
costo de 20 US y
podrá adquirirse
a partir de Marzo. Rosa e Ignacio esperan que
no solo sea una
herramienta para
mejorar la experiencia del buceo,
sino también un
buen
recuerdo
para llevar a casa
y tal vez usarla
como referencia
para amigos que
estén interesados
en visitar Utila en
el futuro.

Tech Talk
By Chris Howard
In celebration of starting school back up, it’s time for a
test!
What is the Internet?
a) The largest Network in the World
b) The source of free phone calls
c) The slowest form of communication ever
d) All of the above
If you picked d), you are mostly right (2 out of 3?). The Internet is the largest network in the world. How big? Oddly,
it’s so big, no one knows! The best guess is there is a collection of approximately 60,000 independent, inter-connected
networks that use the same standard of talking to each other
and have been for over 20 years. These include commercial
(.com or .co), university (.ac or .edu) and other research networks (.org, .net), military (.mil) or Government (.gov), and
Country specific (.hn) networks.
It’s a global network connecting millions of computers.
More than 100 countries are linked into exchanges of data,
news and opinions. It carries various information and services, such as electronic mail, online chat, file transfer, and
the interlinked Web pages and other documents of the World
Wide Web (hence the “www” in front of most names).
The Internet is the collection of interconnected computer
networks while the Web is a collection of those interconnected documents and links.
Internet protocols
The Internet standard (protocol) was deliberately designed
to be independent of the underlying physical medium. In
other words, the standard was defined knowing that DOS,
Windows, Unix, Apple, and any other operating system you
can think of, would have to work together. Any communications network, wired or wireless, that can carry two-way
digital data, can carry Internet traffic.
While you may not know all of these, you’ve no doubt heard
of some of the protocols in the suite: IP, TCP, UDP, DNS,
PPP, SLIP, ICMP, POP3, IMAP, SMTP, HTTP, HTTPS,
SSH, Telnet, FTP, LDAP, SSL, and TLS. Of these, e-mail
(SMTP/POP3) and the World Wide Web (HTTP/HTTPS)
are clearly the most used, and many other services are built
upon them such as transferring files (FTP).
Streaming media and VoIP
Many existing radio and television broadcasters have provided Internet ‘feeds’ of their live audio and video streams
(for example, the BBC). They have been joined by a range
of pure Internet ‘broadcasters’ who never had on-air licenses. This means that an Internet-connected device can be
used to access on-line media in much the same way as was
previously possible only with a TV or radio. The range of
material is much wider, from photo sharing to highly specialized technical web-casts. The simplest equipment can
allow anybody to broadcast on a worldwide basis.
Web-cams can be seen as an even lower-budget extension of
this phenomenon. In this case the picture may update only
slowly - perhaps once every few seconds or slower, but Internet users can watch animals around an African waterhole,
ships in the Panama Canal or the traffic at a local roundabout live and in real time..
VoIP stands for Voice over IP, where IP refers to the Internet Protocol that underlies all Internet communication.
In recent years many people and organizations have made
VoIP systems as easy to use and as convenient as a normal
telephone. The benefit is that, as the actual voice traffic is
carried by the Internet, VoIP is free or costs much less than
an actual telephone call, especially over long distances and
especially for those with always-on (Cable or DSL) Internet
connections anyway.

Voldemort’s Death Eaters are gaining strength
and even creating the Dark Mark giving evidence that the Dark Lord is ready to rise again. In
the unsuspecting lives of the young wizard and
witches at Hogwarts the competitors are selected
by the goblet of fire, which this year makes a
very surprising announcement: Hogwarts will
have two representatives in the tournament, including Harry Potter! Will Harry be able to rise
to the challenge for the Tri Wizard Tournament
while keeping up with school or will the challenges along with Voldemort’s rebirth be too
much for the young hero?
Faster than a speeding bullet?
Yes and it definitely goes farther but you may not think so.
I’m sure you all share the frustration of sitting around and
waiting for a page to finish loading. One thing to ask yourself is, ‘where is the information coming from?’ For example, Hotmail and Yahoo are West Coast of the United States
based services. To get from here to there, the signal either
goes via a satellite (some 22,000 miles up and the same
down), a series of cables (wire, fiber optics), radio signals,
or some combination of all to get there.
One can easily trace the route of a connection to find where
and how long it takes at each server along the way. From
here in Utila to Hotmail in Redmond, WA can take almost
3 seconds (1 second here, 1.8 seconds once it leaves the
island) and travels via Miami and Atlanta before getting
to Washington. So, let’s answer the question: The fastest
bullet travels at 1220 meters per second. The Internet time
above is closer to 3000 miles per second! Now you’re saying that you’ve waited much longer than 3 seconds before!
Yes, those times are for a very small amount of information
and that brings us to the next factor in speed – what are
you sending or receiving? Pictures take a long time because
they are generally a large amount of information. And you
may not be sending pictures, but think of all those ads that
show on the side of Yahoo, Hotmail, and all the other ‘free’
email server providers. They have to be downloaded to the
computer you’re sitting at so they can be displayed (whether you want to see them or not). Of interest, voice data is
not much information at all (when compressed) and travels
quite fast.
The last factor for speed is how busy any part of the network is. If everyone is on at the same time, things will slow
down. The amount of information that any given ISP (Internet Service Provider) can handle is called bandwidth or pipe
and is limited. Think of it as a piece of drainpipe. Now start
putting water through the pipe. Add a Utilian rainstorm and
the pipe simply can’t keep up. What happens? The water
backs up and waits its turn to get through the pipe. The exact same thing happens with the Internet – the more people
(water) the longer it takes to get through.
While this may not make you feel any better, perhaps you
can appreciate all that’s going on while you’re sitting there
waiting for the ultimate email that’s going to change your
life ;-)

Thinking Green
By Jules Page
Utila’s New Environmental Forums
This year we are starting preparations
for the International Clean Up Day early.
As the event takes place on April 22nd
we have enough time to brainstorm and
start to focus on one of the most important points of the day, Education.
As successful as the clean up has been
in previous years, we would like to take
it a step further. Last year local businesses and dive shops donated money,
services, goods and/or time. The whole
community came together, as both local and tourist sectors divided the island
into clean up areas and helped out as
best they could.
However, things are looking a little different this year. The organizers of the
previous years clean ups are finding
themselves without time, which is a
crucial aspect of running this sort of an
island wide event. We have had a few
names put forward by others but what
we are looking for is people with time
and enthusiasm to come forward and
volunteer to help make this event even
bigger and better.
As we would like to focus on Education we need people with a teaching
background to came forward and assist
in setting up an appropriate curriculum
and give presentations to teachers, students and church groups to raise awareness of how our actions impact our local
environment.
Each year we have raised important issues affecting our environment and often came up with good ideas to disarm
these problems however these are often
left as only ideas. What we would like
to do is put together an environmental
platform in which we can launch these
ideas and make them happen.
Brad, from the Bundu has been kind
enough to open his doors to host these
events. As an experienced eco warrior
from Hawaii he will be happy to be an
advisor. We are also looking to establish a round table with a seat available
for each dive shop, each environmental
group in Utila, specialists and the municipality. Others will be welcomed to
form the taskforce committee such as a
chair and secretary (these roles may be
hard to fill as we think the best approach
is to have person non dive shop affiliated).
The environmental forums will be held
at the Bundu every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month at 7.00pm. Even if
you aren’t here for the long term please
do not let that stop you getting involved.
There are so many different areas we
need assistance with, fundraising, marketing, logistical arrangements, presentations and flyer posting!
If you have any ideas please start discussing them with each other and bring
them along to our new environmental
forums. If you have any questions Jules,
Simon and Andrina at Cross Creek Dive
Center are happy to help.
Succesful Beach Clean Up
By Utila East Wind
On the 9th of February a group of volunteers clean up the
beach of the new airport. The clean up was organized independently by Lindsey York and Jessica Chan. “We wanted
to participate in a beach clean-up during our stay. Even
though a lot of them are organized every year we wanted to
make sure we could help out so we decided to organize one
ourselves,” said Jessica.
As this was their first beach clean up organization they got
together with Jules, Simon and Andrina from Cross Creek,
who have organized many clean-ups on Utila, to get more
information on how to organize one. The girls started
putting up flyers around town,
talked to people on the street,
in bars and restaurants and
several dive shops to let them
know about it.
A group of about 45 volunteers (divers and non-divers)
gathered for the clean up.
They decided to clean up the
new airport beach as some of
them were up there and said it
looked quite bad with all the
garbage that was washed upon
the beach. Between 2pm and
5pm they cleaned a strip of
about 200 meters and collected
a total of 78 bags of garbage.
60 bags were filled with non-recyclable items such as shoes,
plastics and cans. And the other 18 with recyclable plastic,
which were taken to Utila Water Sports. All in all it was a
successful clean up. Lindsey and Jessica have already gotten
the next one scheduled.

zapatos, plasticos y latas. Y las

Back to school health tips
By Utila East Wind
As your children will have to carry a lot of books to school
make sure their backpacks are comfortable. Thick shoulder
straps are preferable as thin straps might cut in and restrict
circulation. A padded back will give protection against sharp
items and book corners.
The backpack should never weight more than 10 to 20 % of
your child’s weight as more than that might be too heavy.
Heavy loading of the spine may induce muscle skeletal
problems in children and have a restrictive effect on the
lungs.
Also make sure that your child wears its backpack correctly.
If it hangs on only one shoulder it might strain muscles and
increases curvature of the spine. Use as many of the compartments as possible and pack heavy items in the center
much sugar.
TV Tips
It is a good idea to have TV limits. One or two hours per
day of TV is plenty. Hide the remote control in order to stop
channel surfing as that encourages passive viewing. Your
child might also end up watching shows intended for adults.
Graphic language, violence and sexual content can have a
bad effect on children. Make sure their viewing is appropriate.
TV can also be a great learning tool and extend one’s awareness of the world. When it comes to watching movies, use
the rating system to choose appropriate movies.
Sleep
During your sleep the body renews energy. Dreaming is
also good for your psychological wellbeing. It is difficult
to say how much sleep children need as it depends on the
individual. If your child is active ands doesn’t sleep much
it may not be a problem. Trying to change their pattern to
what others say is ‘normal’ may cause problems. Use your
common sense. If your child doesn’t sleep as much as you
think they should but look rested and healthy, do not worry
about it. However, if they look tired try bringing bedtime
back bit by bit.

section in the back. A bag on wheels is the best if your child
HAS to carry a heavy load.
Developing good homework and study habits
Provide a quiet study area for your child where he or she can
study and make sure to leave plenty of time for study and
homework. To make it easier to concentrate you could make
it a rule to not have the TV on during homework time. You
can assist your child with his/her homework but do not do
the homework for them. If your child has a lot of homework
to do let them have 10-15 minute break every hour. If they
face any difficulties in a certain subject and you are not able
to help them out, go talk to their teacher, as they might be
able to help or find a tutor.
Eating at school
If your child does not like the snacks that are offered at school
give them some snacks that they do like to take with them,
making sure they are healthy snacks such as fresh fruit and
low fat dairy. Encourage the school to give healthy snacks
to. As a drink provide them with water or fruit juices instead
of frescos. One fresco contains about 10 teaspoons of sugar!
Drinking just one fresco a day can increase a child’s risk of
obesity by 60 %. Frescos that contain caffeine can also have
a negative effect on concentration as can the intake of too

Driver: It’s mine, officer. Here’s the registration.
Captain: Could you
slowly open your
glove box so I can see
if there’s a gun in it?
Driver: Yes, sir, but
there’s no gun in it.
Sure enough, there
was nothing in the
glove box.
Captain: Would you mind opening your
trunk? I was told you said there’s a body
in it.
Driver: No problem. Trunk is opened; no
body.
Captain: I don’t understand it. The officer who stopped you said you told him
you didn’t have a license, stole the car,
had a gun in the glove-box, and that
there was a body in the trunk?
Driver: Yeah, and I’ll bet the big liar told
you I was speeding too!
