e are finally getting back to the
"numbered Sundays," (what in Latin
is called "Ordinary Time"--the numbered weeks--not "ordinary" as in "run of the mill," but
"numbered"--and this is the 11th Sunday of the
"numbered weeks;") actually this is "the Season of the
Holy Spirit"--the time the silent Presence of God
makes astounding things happen. And this year's
"theme" of the readings is "the struggle" to comprehend and live the message. The readings open with a
metaphor about tree growth--a shoot from the top (new
growth area) of a Lebanon cedar--the largest of trees-and planting it Israel's Golan Heights where it will
grow abundantly. BUT, does it mean that "Israel" will
grow to dominate the area of Lebanon, OR that Lebanese people will ultimately make their home in Israel-AND, will either situation be one of peace? A struggle.
In the second reading, Paul struggles with finding
strength to go on--any you thought that was just your
problem, didn't you? The Gospel provides some resolution: while all the "struggles of life" go on, Something Is At Work...and seeds grow, we don't know
how, and do amazing things--a little bit of mustard can
take over a field in no time. There is a Generosity all
around us that aids us. We all need to "know" that
in the midst of our own life's struggles.

y este es el domingo 11 de los domingos contados.
Estamos en el Tiempo del Espíritu Santo– el Tiempo
de la Presencia de Dios que hace cosas maravillosas.
Y el “tema” de las lecturas es la “lucha” de comprender y vivir el mensaje. Las lecturas empiezan con una
metáfora– un brote en lo alto del Cedro Líbano– el
árbol más grande– será sembrado en las tierras de Israel donde crecerá en abundancia. Pero, ¿será que Israel
crecerá para reinar sobre Líbano, o que el pueblo de
Líbano finalmente mirará a Israel como su patria? ¿Y
tendrán paz en cualquiera de estas situaciones? Es definitivamente una lucha. En la segunda lectura, encontramos a un Pablo que lucha para seguir adelante; así
vemos que no sólo somos nosotros. El Evangelio nos
da esperanza: mientras que todo en la vida es una lucha para seguir, hay algo que está tomando lugar…
que al sembrar la semilla crece, y aunque no sepamos
cómo, da a fruto cosas maravillosas– un granito de
mostaza que llenará la tierra en poco tiempo. Tenemos una abundancia en nuestras vidas que nos
ayuda a seguir, y todos deberíamos de saber esto en
medio de nuestras luchas.

A Return to Love
To build and foster a Christian Community that
offers the opportunity to experience God’s unconditional love and acceptance to all who come into
contact with it.
W
e live in a place that does not
have a kingdom and so sometimes these readings don't make
much sense to us. Yet there is still a lesson here
for us. We tend to think that when God's Kingdom
comes it will reflect our own values and agendas
more than they do God's. Whether one is liberal or
conservative or something else, we tend to imagine that God's will being done on earth would look
a lot like what we and our like-minded friends
would like to see happen.
But the parable of the Kingdom in today's
Gospel, seems to emphasize that the Kingdom arrives not through our efforts but by God's grace.
Let us all try to look at our work and world
through those lenses and see if we could learn to
live together in peace under God's banner.

podemos ver una enseñanza. A veces pesamos
que cuando llegue el Reino de Dios, lo nuestra
será más importante que lo de Dios. Seguido
pensamos que la voluntad de Dios será muy parecida nuestras mentalidad y de nuestros amigos
en cuando a lo que queremos que pase.
Pero la parábola de hoy nos dice que el Reino
viene no por lo que hacemos, pero más importante, por la gracia de Dios. Vivamos sabiendo
estoy e intentemos vivir mejor juntos y encontrar la paz bajo el reinado de Dios.
