Over seventeen years ago, a group of high school students had a vision for a student group whose members would take pride in their heritage and work to share it with the community. Today, the outcome of that vision — the Latino Awareness Organization — is still holding strong. “(They wanted to) create a club where like-minded individuals could meet together and promote Latino cultural awareness,” said Manuel Garcia one of the club’s founders. Garcia said that members take yearly college tours, which Ibanez sees as a chance for growth on many levels. “I would like to keep them involved in the Latino culture,” Ibanez said. “I would like to motivate them to join or create other organizations when they go to college.” That’s the spirit that has kept the L.A.O. going for the past 17 years, and will help it continue on in the future. “L.A.O. members truly care about promoting to others the beauty of their background,” said Garcia. “They’re proud of who they are and where they came from. “This club allows them to express themselves as well as work together with others in sharing the different cultural aspects with the students and staff at Heritage High and with Saginaw.” ~ By Kiley Kievit Realize your dream of earning a college education The Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Outstate Michigan Scholars program awards 10 deserving high school seniors with a scholarship of $2,000/year for four years to a college of their choice.
