Over seventeen years ago, a group
of high school students had a vision
for a student group whose members
would take pride in their heritage and
work to share it with the community.
Today, the outcome of that vision —
the Latino Awareness Organization —
is still holding strong.
“(They wanted to) create a club
where like-minded individuals could
meet together and promote Latino
cultural awareness,” said Manuel Garcia
one of the club’s founders.
As club advisor and a teacher at
Saginaw’s Heritage High School, Garcia
oversees the student members as they
participate in cultural shows and Cinco
frijoles
mantiene estable y fuerte.
“(Ellos querían)
un club en donde
individuos con la
misma forma de
pensar pudieran
juntarse y promover
la conciencia cultural
Latina,” dijo Manuel
García acerca de los
Manuel Garcia
fundadores del club.
Como consejero del club y maestro
en la Preparatoria Heritage en Saginaw,
García supervisa a los miembros
estudiantiles mientras participan en
las presentaciones culturales y las
festividades del Cinco de Mayo y
aparte de eso comparten su historia y
cultura con su escuela y la comunidad.
“Me pareció buena idea involucrarme
con la escuela y con mi cultura,” dijo
de Mayo festivities, and otherwise
share their history and culture with
their school and community.
“It seemed like a good idea to get
involved with the school and my
culture,” said Sergio Ibanez, 18. A
senior at Heritage, Ibanez takes part in
another aspect of the L.A.O. – planning
for the future.
Garcia said that members take yearly
college tours, which Ibanez sees as a
chance for growth on many levels.
“I would like to keep them involved
in the Latino culture,” Ibanez said. “I
would like to motivate them to join or
create other organizations when they
go to college.”
That’s the spirit that has kept the
L.A.O. going for the past 17 years, and
will help it continue on in the future.
“L.A.O. members truly care about
promoting to others the beauty of their
background,” said Garcia. “They’re
proud of who they are and where they
came from.
“This club allows them to express
themselves as well as work together
with others in sharing the different
cultural aspects with the students
and staff at Heritage High and with
Saginaw.”

Sergio Ibáñez de 18 años. Como un
estudiante del grado 12 en Heritage,
Ibáñez toma parte en otro aspecto de
L.A.O – planear para el futuro.
El Sr. García dice que los miembros
visitan las universidades anualmente,
a los cuales Ibáñez ve como una
oportunidad para crecer en muchos
niveles diferentes.
“Me gustaría mantenerlos
involucrados en la cultura Latina,”
dijo Ibáñez. “Me gustaría motivarlos a
crear o a unirse a otras organizaciones

“I am proud of my Hispanic Heritage. My parents taught me different
customs when I was growing up and the culture is part of my life. Now I
like to use my Spanish to help people who are still learning
English because I know what it’s like to struggle with
Sponsored by
learning another language. The Spanish language is
part of who I am, which is why it’s important to me
that my kids speak both English and Spanish.”
Maria
Garcia
“My Hispanic heritage has taught me family values
and those traditions keep us united. We have a
good work ethic and are loyal to each other. I
enjoy speaking Spanish and translating for others
because I like helping people. I’m proud of my
heritage and celebrate passing these lessons along.”
