HEARING AND DOING
It is made clear throughout the Gospels and
Epistles that our discipleship, as followers of Jesus,
is not over until our bodily death. In today’s second
reading we are urged, “Be doers of the word and
not hearers only” (James 1:22). Discipleship is
hard. Sometimes we have “reasons” why we cannot do things—we are too tired, too old, too sick,
too needy. We are too busy with work, with children, with other responsibilities. Yet some of the
best “prayers” are people confined by illness or
disability. Some of the wisest listeners are the
elderly, who have a lifetime of patience and
wisdom to draw on. Some of the most generous
givers are those who have endured poverty and
suffering themselves. Some of the most admired
organizers are those who delegate and let other
people shine. And let us not forget the heroes who
put their lives on the line in time of crisis. Not
everyone is called to heroism, but all of us are
called to live generously and selflessly. The
opportunities are endless: in our families, our
parish, our neighborhood or town, and in places
around the world. Try to balance prayer, action and
financial giving. A busy mother with three toddlers
can hardly spend hours in prayer or at church. A
man who must work two jobs to support his family
has limited time to volunteer, and a person on a
tiny fixed income cannot give large donations to
the church or charity. However, the busy mother
can talk to God as she chases after her little ones.
The hardworking man can help with an occasional
parish event, and the person with a limited income
can put a steady few dollars in the collection each
week. Everyone can be a “doer.”

ESCUCHAR Y HACER ALGO
otras responsabilidades. Y sin embargo, algunas de
las mejores “oraciones” son las personas
confinadas debido a enfermedad o discapacidad.
“algo”.

EAST JEFFERSON DEANERY
As we continue to observe this “Year of Renewal”
on the Mass, the Office of Worship will be offering
in our Deanery a morning of renewal to explore the
spirituality of the Mass. Especially encouraged for
all those who serve in our various liturgical
ministries, this time of reflection is also open to all
our parishioners.
The morning of reflection will be at St. Jerome
Church in Kenner, Saturday, September 20 from
10:00am until Noon.
There will be three presentations on the Mass: as
family meal, as sacrifice, and as encounter with the
Divine. There will also be time for quiet reflection
and communal prayer.
No registration is required and the session is free of
charge. Please mark you calendar and plan to attend!
This time of reflection will be repeated in our
Deaneary on Tuesday, October 16 from 7-9pm at St.

PRAYER OF THE WEEK
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — For what great nation is there that has
gods so close to it as the LORD, our God, is to us?
(Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8).
Psalm — The one who does justice will live in the presence
of the Lord (Psalm 15).
Second Reading — Religion that is pure is this: to care for
orphans and widows in their affliction
(James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27).
Gospel — This people honors me with their lips, but their
hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching
as doctrines human precepts
(Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23).

DOERS OF THE WORD
The second reading for today begins a five-week
series of selections from James, a letter that is classified
among the so-called “catholic” (or universal) epistles
because they are addressed to a general audience rather
than to one particular community. Today’s text offers
important advice for Christians of every generation. God
is first cited as the author of all gifts, and in particular,
reference is made to the gift of baptism by which we
have been made the “first fruits” of the new creation.
What follows is advice based on a very Jewish
understanding of the “word” as an active force, operative
in the world. We are reminded that unless we, too, become “doers” of the word, our claim to faith is empty.
Today and in subsequent weeks the author reminds us
that it is equally important to do the “works” of love, for
example, by caring for the “orphans and widows in their

affliction.”
THE ORIGINAL CURRENCY
Labor was the first price, the original purchase-money that
was paid for all things. It was not by gold or by silver, but by labor,
that all wealth of the world was originally purchased.
September 2, 2012, Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time
God of might, giver of every good gift,
put into our hearts the love of your name,
so that, by deepening our sense of reverence,
you may nurture in us what is good
and, by your watchful care,
keep safe what you have nurtured.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Reflection question:
Toward what or whom should I have a sense of reverence?

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time
St. Gregory the Great; Labor Day

The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Labor Day originated in 1882 in New York City
under the aegis of the Knights of Labor. Congress made
it a legal holiday in 1894. Observing it this week gives us
a good opportunity to reflect on the Catholic Church’s
social teachings for the last century or so. On May 15,
1891, Pope Leo XIII issued the encyclical Rerum Novarum on the condition of the working classes and labor. In
doing so, he initiated a century in which Catholic teaching became more and more involved in the social issues
of the day.
Unfortunately relegated to the shadows while the
bright lights of controversy shine on other issues, Catholic social teaching remains largely unknown to many
Catholics. It is the Catholic Church that championed such
notions as a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work, and continues to uphold the dignity of the human person against
attacks from governments and corporations. Nearly every
pope since Leo XIII has issued teachings on the subject.
Take some time this Labor Day to familiarize yourself
with some aspect of the Church’s social teachings. In
doing so, you will be taking responsibility as a member
of the Body of Christ to commit yourself to the care of
your neighbor.

Salmo — ¿Quién será grato a tus ojos, Señor?
(Salmo 15 [14]).
