The Ascension of the Lord
May 8, 2016
God mounts his throne amid shouts of joy;
the L
, amid trumpet blasts.
— Psalm 47:6
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — Jesus tells the disciples that they will be witnesses to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:1-11).
Psalm — God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord (Psalm 47).
Second Reading — God seated Jesus at his right hand in the heavens (Ephesians 1:17-23) or Hebrews 9:2428; 10:19-23.
Gospel — As Jesus blessed his disciples he parted from them and was taken up to heaven (Luke 24:46-53).

CONTINUALLY PRAISING GOD
In both the first reading and the Gospel we are told about Christ’s glorious ascension into heaven. Paul's letter
to the Ephesians reminds us that Christ has been seated at God’s right hand in heaven, above every choir of
angels. There might be a temptation to stay at an awed distance from Jesus Christ.
However, the tone of today’s readings is far from that temptation. The tone is exultant and the message is urgent. We are to be his witnesses, and the Gospel describes the first witnesses this way. “[W]ith great joy …
they were continually in the temple praising God” (Luke 24:53).
How can we continually praise God? The answer can be found in the second reading, in which Paul prays that
God will give us a “Spirit of wisdom and revelation” in order to know Christ clearly (Ephesians 1:17). We
cannot stand at a distance. We are to be enlightened and empowered. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The Second Vatican Council decreed that the devotional life of the Church should be examined and reformed
with an eye towards expressing Easter faith. This encouragement for creativity has deep roots in our tradition, and some
attempts at reform show great promise. One of the great treasures in our devotional repertoire is a familiar feature of
Lent: the Way of the Cross. The faithful walk a path recalling the events of Christ’s passion, a contemplative experience
increasingly enriched these days by scripture and song. There are fourteen stations in the usual configuration, although
in recent years, a fifteenth station of the Empty Tomb has been added. Why stop there? Why not develop a similar journey structured on the theme of the appearances of the Risen Lord?
Over the last decade, a Via Lucis, or “Way of Light,” has developed as a companion to the Via Crucis. It has been
celebrated at the Vatican and is catching on elsewhere. There are fourteen stations, beginning with the Women Carrying
Spices to the Tomb, continuing with the familiar appearances of the Lord at Emmaus, the Upper Room, the shore of Tiberias. The journey ends with stations recalling the apostles’ wait with Mary for the advent of the Spirit, and with Pentecost. This is fertile ground indeed for the genius of artists, musicians, preachers, and liturgists. This is a living example
of how many of our traditions are born to fill a great spiritual need, and spread to every corner of the Church. It may
even come soon to a church near you. Maybe next Eastertime!

St. Francis of Assisi Church
Loving God,
we come before You
and lift up in prayer all mothers,
grandmothers, stepmothers and
mothers-to-be who gave the gift of life and
nourishment.
Bless these women,
that they may be strengthened as Christian
mothers.
Let the example of their faith and love shine
forth.
Grant that we, their sons and daughters,
may honor them always
with a spirit of profound respect.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Spring Combined Collection
May 21 & 22, 2016
You are invited to share our love of the Lord by
supporting the Spring Combined Collection.
When reflecting about your donation amount
please consider the following questions:
• Have you ever wished you could personally
help a 4-year-old who hasn’t eaten in 5
days?
• Have you ever known someone struggling
with their relationship with the Lord?
• Do you wish you could have done more for
those affected by natural disasters?
PRAYER INTENTION BOOK
Individual names of those in need of prayer,
including the sick, hospitalized, dying, or deceased, may be entered in our new PRAYER
INTENTION BOOK located near the baptismal
font. They will be remembered at all the masses offered at St. Francis of Assisi.
You may not be able to leave your family, home
and job to help the less fortunate but the
money you give to the Spring Combined Collection allows people to physically do the things
you wished you could. Now is your opportunity
to say “Yes, I will help!”
Please prayerfully consider what you can do
and do it! Thank you and God Bless!

your family on Mother’s Day!
Our former seminarian, Dominic Vu, now Rev.
Mr. Dominic Vu, joyfully announces and invites
you to attend his Ordination to the Holy Priesthood of Jesus Christ through the Imposition of
Hands and the Invocation of the Holy Spirit by
his Excellency The Most Reverend Gerald R.
Barnes.
The ordination will take place on Saturday,
May 21st, 2016, at 10.00 a.m. in St. Paul the
Apostle Church, 14085 Payton Dr., Chino

priestly vocation than to be there for this very
important day in his life.

Martha’s Village and Kitchen
An overwhelming amount of families and individuals in the Coachella Valley are homeless or live well
below the poverty level. Extreme hardships lead
many in our community to go without safe homes,
nourishing meals, and the means to live a stable life.
With your generosity, we were able to give Martha’s
Village and Kitchen a $10,000.00 donation. This is
an example of how we can all work together to care
for the church by sharing the gifts God has granted
us.
Thank you for your continual support in this years
2016 Diocesan Development Fund
The Diocesan Development Fund (DDF) helps support many different
Ministries in our Diocese. As you may know, these donations help support our Priests, Seminarians and Catholic education among other programs.
We have been blessed to help support seven seminarians, five of whom
are currently priests. One is being ordained to the priesthood this
month and one is currently in formation at our Parish. Your funds also
help support our priests to minister and spread the Gospel.
Our seminarians are just one group of people who receive assistance
from the DDF Annual Appeal. By sharing a prayerful financial gift, you
can impact the lives of your loved ones and touch the lives of thousands who live throughout the Diocese of San Bernardino through programs that teach, heal, and nurture.
This year our Diocesan Goal is $155,700.00. Any funds received over
the goal are directly returned to our Parish to help support our many
ministries. Please join us in prayer for the success of the DDF Annual
Appeal by making a gift to support our parish and diocese!
Thanks again for
your help.
May God bless you

La Ascensión del Señor

Dios asciende entre aclamaciones,
el Señor, al son de trompetas.
— Salmo 47 (46):6

revelación (Efesios 1:17-23) o Hebreos 9:24-28; 10:19-23.

CONTINUAMENTE ALABANDO A DIOS
¿Cómo podemos alabar a Dios continuamente?
No podemos
mantenernos a distancia. Vamos a ser iluminados y fortalecidos. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
