like music, acting and visual arts – is
associated with achievement gains in
math, reading, cognitive ability and
verbal skills. Plus, it’s just plain fun!
TIPS YOU CAN USE AT HOME
• Encourage curiosity by asking
questions. Inspire your child’s
imagination with simple, fun, “What
if ?” questions while encouraging them
to think outside the box for answers.
• Leave room for creativity in daily
experiences like riding in the car or
watching television. Have your child
draw a story about what they just saw.
• Build confidence by encouraging
children to come up with new ideas
on their own when it comes to creative
expression.
• Drawings are often a child’s first written
communication. “Tell me about your
drawing?” is a good question to spark
conversation.
• Early on, provide art materials and art
projects and set up an art center in your
home.

Success focuses on
fine arts and the
importance of
encouraging your
child to be creative
and to engage in dance, music,
theater and/or visual arts. The
Arlington ISD has many fine arts
opportunities for our students
to explore, but helping your
child discover fine arts interests
at home and honing in on the
culture, self-expression and sense
of wonder experienced through
fine arts is vital. Attend concerts
or listen to a variety of genres of
music, see a play together, take
your child to an art exhibit, get
outside and photograph nature –
immerse your family in the arts!

• When children say, “Look what I did!”
reflect their enthusiasm. Take what
they are doing seriously, which will
encourage them to improve skills with
practice.
• Emphasize the enjoyment and the
process of creating art more than
results.
• Celebrate creativity by displaying their
artwork in the house or by sharing video
of a theater or music performance to
family and friends.
• Gather the family to create arts and
crafts night, do a play, take photographs
or perform a mini concert.
• If your child likes music, ask them what
sounds they like so you may narrow
down what instrument is best for them.
Talk to the strings instructor before
making a final choice.
• Encourage your child to practice
music at least once a day. Aiming for
that usually ensures enough practice
throughout the week.
• Consider using the phrase “playing
time” in music rather than “practice
time.”
• There are peaks and valleys in learning,
so expect discouragement and focus on
the positives of the efforts.
• Help your child see the connection
between effort and results – as they
complete a task or learn new materials,
remind them of the work they put into
the assignment.
• Allow your child to invite a friend over
to play instruments/act/sing together
in an unstructured, freewheeling
environment.
• Set limits on TV, cell phone, tablet and
computer time by designating time for
the family to work on a creative project
together.
• Teach your child that mistakes are
opportunities for growth when it comes
to fine arts. Ask, ”What could you do
differently next time?” Model patience.
• Local libraries, museums or community
centers are great places for fine arts
classes or workshops to try and/or learn
creative skills.

La participación en las bellas artesen áreas como música, actuación y
artes visuales- está asociada a mayores
logros en matemáticas, lectura,
aptitud cognitiva y habilidades
verbales. Además, es pura diversión!
CONSEJOS PARA SEGUIR EN CASA
• Estimule la curiosidad haciendo
preguntas. Inspire la imaginación de sus
hijos haciéndoles preguntas simples y
divertidas del tipo “¿Qué pasaría si..?”
estimulándolos a pensar respuestas
originales y poco convencionales.
• Haga espacio para la creatividad en las
experiencias cotidianas como ir en coche
o mirar la televisión. Pídale a su hijo/a
que dibuje una historia acerca de lo que
acaba de ver.
• Aumente su confianza al estimular a
los niños a pensar en nuevas ideas por sí
mismos en lo que respecta a la expresión
creativa.
• Los dibujos son, frecuentemente, la
primera comunicación escrita de un
niño. “Cuéntame acerca de tu dibujo”
es una buena pregunta para iniciar la
conversación.
• En forma temprana, provéale de
materiales y proyectos artísticos y
establezca un centro de arte en su hogar.
• Cuando los niños digan, “¡Mira lo que
hice!” refleje su entusiasmo. Tómese en

serio lo que ellos están haciendo: eso los
incentivará a mejorar sus habilidades con
la práctica.
• Destaque el disfrute y el proceso de
crear arte más que los resultados.
• Celebre la creatividad mostrando su arte
en la casa o compartiendo un video de
sus actuaciones teatrales o musicales a la
familia o amigos.
• Reúna a la familia para una noche
de artesanías, una obra teatral, tomar
fotografías o realizar un mini concierto.
• Si a su niño/a le gusta la música,
pregúntele qué sonidos le gustan, para
poder determinar cuál instrumento es el
más adecuado para él/ella. Hable con el
instructor de cuerdas antes de tomar una
decisión final.
• Incentive a su hijo/a a practicar música
por lo menos una vez al día. Apuntar
a eso generalmente asegura suficiente
tiempo de práctica a lo largo de la
semana.
• Considere usar la frase “tiempo de
tocar” en lugar de “tiempo de practicar.”
• Hay puntos altos y bajos en el
aprendizaje, así que es esperable que
haya desánimo; enfóquese en lo positivo
de los esfuerzos.
• Ayude a su niño/a a ver la conexión
entre el esfuerzo y los resultados- cuando
completen una tarea o aprendan nuevos
materiales, recuérdeles el trabajo que esta
tarea les costó.
• Permita que su hijo/a invite a un amigo a
tocar instrumentos/actuar/ cantar juntos,
en un ambiente desestructurado y libre.
• Ponga límites al tiempo de televisión,
teléfono móvil, tablet y computadora,
designando un tiempo para que la familia
trabaje junta en un proyecto creativo.
• Enseñe a su hijo/a que los errores son
oportunidades de crecimiento en lo que
respecta a las bellas artes. Pregunte,
“¿Qué podrías hacer de otro modo la
próxima vez?” Forme la paciencia.
• Las bibliotecas, museos o centros
comunitarios locales son excelentes
lugares para tomar clases de bellas artes
o talleres para probar y/o aprender
aptitudes creativas.

vital que usted ayude a su hijo/a a
descubrir intereses por las bellas artes
en casa y que ponga especial empeño
en la cultura, la autoexpresión y
el sentido del asombro. Asistan a
conciertos o escuchen una variedad
de géneros musicales, vean una obra
teatral juntos, lleve a su hijo/a a una
muestra de arte, salgan al exterior y
fotografíen la naturaleza - sumérjase
con su familia en las artes!
