The Lord likes weddings. Scripture
presents the Lord as a bridegroom
delighting in his bride: us. At Cana,
Jesus, his mother and his disciples
were guests at a wedding. When the
couple needed help, Jesus creatively
showed his glory. The last wine
turned out to be the best. God’s Spirit shares gifts with us for very good
reasons. We receive the gifts with joy
and use them for salvation. Being a
guest at this great wedding can
change everything.

Pastoral Notes
Second Sunday in Ordinary Times
God promises to be the BRIDEGROOM of
his people In their post-exilic situation the
people of Israel were still feeling the effects of
the destruction of the city and temple of Jerusalem by foreign invaders. They were
"forsaken" by God and their land left
"desolate." But now in this exuberant poem
God is promising a new restoration. God is so
excited that he cannot remain silent. Israel's
"vindication" for being destroyed by foreigners will shine forth for all the kings and nations of the world to see. God promises to bestow a "new name" and thus a new status upon his people. They will be called the
"Delight" and the "Espoused" of God. God,
the "Builder" who will rebuild his people,
promises to be intimately reunited with them
by marrying them, thus renewing the covenant
by which God will be the bridegroom who delights in Israel as his bride.
This reading thus appropriately accompanies
and serves as background for today's gospel.
In a unique fulfillment of this Isaian prophecy
Jesus manifests himself as the real
"bridegroom" of the wedding feast at Cana.
He provides the "good wine" that will surpass
the water of the Jewish ceremonial washings
as a means of uniting people with God, as
bride to bridegroom. Jesus represents the
"good wine" of the final, end-time wedding
feast that has now arrived.

Al Señor le gustan las bodas. Las Sagradas Escrituras presentan al Señor
como el novio que se deleita en su desposada: nosotros. En Caná, Jesús, su
madre y sus discípulos eran invitados
de una boda. Cuando la pareja necesitaba ayuda, Jesús mostró su gloria de
una manera creativa. El vino del final
resultó ser el mejor. El Espíritu de
Dios comparte dones con nosotros por
buenas razones. Recibimos los dones
con gozo y los utilizamos para la salvación. Ser uno de los invitados de esta gran boda puede cambiarlo todo.

Segundo Domingo de Tipo Ordinario
La segunda lectura de hoy nos asegura
que el Espíritu Santo nos provee con muchos dones, particularmente los que necesitamos para utilizarlos en la construcción del Reino de Dios. De hecho, el
Evangelio de san Juan nos presenta el
primero de los signos que, para san Juan,
realizó el Señor para mostrar la fuerza
del Espíritu en Su propio llamado. Como
Él, también nosotros debemos confiar
ampliamente que Dios nos acompaña para transformar nuestra vida con la fuerza
de Su amor. Dependiendo de cómo se enfoquen los textos en esta liturgia, se puede llamar a los novios que pronto se van
a casar a que hagan un compromiso de su
noviazgo delante de la comunidad, o
simplemente a recibir la bendición del
sacerdote por ese compromiso. El énfasis
principal yace en la seguridad que nace
de Jesús y de Su promesa de estar con
ellos siempre para transformar sus vidas
con la fuerza de Su amor.
