Pastor’s Corner
God blessed me with
a great mother. As I
get older I realize
how lucky I am and
how I really don’t
deserve to have such
a wonderful mother.
While I have her I try
to make up for all the
terrible and selfish things I did as a teenager. I lived for
18 years with free room and board, laundry, insurance,
clothes, tuition and fees, an automobile. I caused so
much worry. I talked back so much, and gave her an
attitude she did not deserve. Shame on me. (Shame on
you if are doing what I did. Go out and get a job and
pay rent.) But I digress...
We turn on the television, computer or radio and are
bombarded with the secular world’s suggestion of how
to celebrate this life-giving Institution. Dinner, gifts,
banquets, flowers, jewelry, etc. Wonderful gestures that,
quite frankly, should be done every day for our
mothers. The reality is: Mother’s Day is a very difficult
and emotional day for many. Motherhood can be a
blessing and an overwhelming cross and a burden as
well. Today I lift up in prayer and celebrate the Holy
Mass for all of you wonderful Mothers and the
Institution of Motherhood. We pray too for:
- Children who have lost their mothers
- Children who have irresponsible mothers
- Mothers who have lost children
- Mothers who are pregnant
- Mothers who are single parents
- Mothers who have disrespectful children
- Mothers who have special-needs children
- Mothers whose spouses are cruel and selfish
- Mothers who cannot have children
- Mothers who terminated the life of their child
- Mothers who are divorced
- Mothers whose children are incarcerated
- Mothers who are widows
- Mothers who are ill or living in
convalescent homes
- Mothers whose children are in the Service
or in Law enforcement
- Mothers who live in the streets
- Grandmothers and Great-grandmothers

Pastor’s Corner (cont’d)
May is the month of Mothers and Mary. (Mary is her Latin
name. Her actual name was “Miriam”, an ancient Hebrew
name which means “life is bitter”.) Joachim and Ann
named her appropriately. Children, spouses: help, assist,
support your mothers! Stop being a burden.
Motherhood is bittersweet. Like Divine Providence its
very nature is to create, protect, sustain and nurture life
and love. On this day Lord please bless all women and
especially our beloved Mothers living and dead.

Closer to Christ
Dear St. Raphael School Families and Friends,
The month of May is dedicated to Our Blessed Mother.
As is our tradition, students will take home a statue of
Mary to pray the rosary as a family.
It was recently announced that Reese from 3rd grade
was runner-up Junior Spirit of
Fiesta. It was Reese’s first time
auditioning at Junior Spirit
with a three-minute dance
performance and an interview.
Her mom credits much of
Reese’s success, confidence,
work ethic and her ability to
handle the interview to the
education she has received at
St. Raphael School.
Congratulations, Reese!
We held our annual Father Daughter Dance at Bishop
Diego High School where the girls showed up in
gorgeous dresses and danced the night away with their
dads!
Remember that our final fundraiser for the year is on
Friday, May 13! The jog-a-thon is always a fun day and a

Everyone has stress, whether it’s a bad day at work, car
trouble, or simply too many things to do. It is important
to learn how to manage your stress—for your own sake
and for the children around you. Too much stress can
make it hard to parent effectively. After a while, your
children may show signs of being stressed out, too. For a
fact sheet on managing stress please email:
[email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

Continuamente Alabando a Dios
alegres. . . permanecían constantemente en el templo
alabando a Dios” (Lucas 24:53).
¿Cómo podemos alabar a Dios continuamente? La
respuesta se encuentra en la segunda lectura, en la cual
Pablo pide a Dios que nos conceda un “espíritu de
sabiduría y de reflexión” para conocer a Cristo
claramente (Efesios 1:17). No podemos mantenernos a
distancia. Vamos a ser iluminados y fortalecidos.
