Next Sunday, the third Sunday of July, we celebrate the title of our Congregation, the Feast of the Most Holy Redeemer. We Redemptorists have a glorious past, we have four Saints of the Church (St. Alphonsus, Clement, Gerard, Neumann), we have seven Blesseds of the Church (Francis Seelos, Peter Donders, Kaspar Stanggassinger, Gennaro Sarnelli, Methodius Dominick Trcka, and Nicholas Charnetsky and Companions – Martyrs of Ukraine, and the Redemptorist Martyrs of Cuenca, Spain.) We are a worldwide religious congregation and are called and sent to proclaim the Good News of the Gospel to the poor and most abandoned. This year we are in the midst of celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Holy Father giving the Icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help to us and charging us to make her known, of which, we have been faithful and successful in doing. But among our storied and glorious past we have had our share of struggles along the way. This weekend I would like to share a darker tragic moment of our Redemptorist history, a moment that is seldom remembered, a moment that happened right here at St. Mary’s 150 years ago, in 1866 on this very weekend, July 9-10. Did you know there was a drowning of five Redemptorists near the shores of our property? On the hot afternoon of July 9, 1866, four priests and three professed students set out on a sailing expedition. They anchored at Lake Ogleton, about four miles from St. Mary’s, where they decided to enjoy the cool waters and went in for a swim. One of the priests, Father John Gerdemann, and one of the students, John Kenny, were wading in chest-deep water when Kenny sank into a hole and swallowed a large amount of water. Father Gerdemann and another student, Wendelin Guhl, went to help and Guhl brought Kenny ashore, but Father Gerdemann, had disappeared beneath the water. The others searched for the missing priest and not finding him, they rowed the boat out into the Severn River to look for him. After four hours of searching, they gave up and sorrowfully turned the boat toward home under sail. Suddenly they were hit by a squall and lowered the sail. When the storm passed and they raised the sail again, the boat was hit by a large wave and capsized. Kenny and another student, John Runge, went under and were lost. Father Timothy Enright rescued Father Louis Claessens and together they pulled Guhl from underneath the overturned sailboat. Fathers Enright and Claessens, plus Father James Bradley and Guhl, clung to the overturned boat, but as the night wore on Fathers Claessens and Bradley lost their grips and slid beneath the waves and drowned. By daylight on July 10, Father Enright and Wendelin Guhl found the boat had drifted near the Thomas Point Lighthouse. They waded ashore at Highland Beach to the farm of Charity Brashears. From there they walked four miles back to the banks of Spa Creek and called across to their distraught confreres at St. Mary’s. The bodies of the five Redemptorists were recovered over the next few days and funerals were held. They lie buried today in the Redemptorist Cemetery in the Carroll Gardens. The people of Annapolis mourned this tragic loss for the Redemptorists and St. Mary’s. May they, and all deceased Redemptorists, rest in peace. Thanks to fellow parishioner and parish archivist, Robert Worden, there is a small exhibit remembering the five Redemptorists who drowned and the two who survived can be seen in the Rectory hallway. Please take the time to see this special exhibit. God Bless Us All, Fr. Tizio Email: [email protected] Pastor’s Pun: Why can’t melons mar r y? They cantaloupe. St. Mary’s Parish Ranger Rosary Father Vincent Capodanno, MM, was a priest, missionary and chaplain who served during the war in Vietnam in 1967. He always sought to heal and comfort his men on the field of battle. During one fierce battle, Father went among the wounded and dying, giving last rites and taking care of his Marines. Wounded once in the face and suffering another wound to his hand, he continued to help his men. Father Capodanno died taking care of his men. In May 2006 Capodanno was publicly declared Servant of God, the first step towards canonization. Perhaps we could ask this holy priest to intercede for the us and our needs. Certainly he is praying for our military and for those who pray Our Lady’s favorite prayer, the rosary. Join the volunteers every Wednesday at SJN 9-12. Stay for the 12:10 Mass, Novena and rosary, if possible. Contact 410-990-4714, [email protected], www.rangerrosaary.org. Community Pillar Annapolis, Maryland Recycled School Supplies Needed for Appalachian Children "The need goes on, the need goes on" is the annual appeal that makes its way to our parish every year at this time. Our ecumenical friends in Appalachia have let us know that their school children and teachers need supplies for this coming fall. Again, our list includes writing supplies, paper of all types, folders, rulers, scissors, book bags of all types, teaching supplies, crayons and paints, glue- you name it. They need what it takes to get the job done for folks without an income, or teachers who often buy supplies out of their paychecks. We are helping our friends in Virginia, West Virginia, and western Maryland. Yes, we are making a difference, and their gratitude spurs us on. All donations may be dropped off during the Ranger Rosary workshops on Wednesday, July 20 and 27 from 9:00 am to noon in Seelos Hall, St. John Neumann. Extra help is needed as the donations come in. In 1911 he went to war for the King of Bavaria and was sent to North Africa to secure territory for the German Empire. As most travel in 1911 was done by ship, he traveled to the North Sea to depart for Morocco. This is the story as told to me by my grandmother: “Oppa was at the train station in Munich, Germany waiting for the troop train to take him to his ship. On the platform, he was approached by an elderly woman. She walked directly up to him and said something to this effect, ‘Take this rosary with you and you will come home. It was taken to war by my husband and he returned. It was given to my son and he returned. I have no one to pass it on to. Take this rosary and pray it. You will return.’ She then melded into the crowded platform.” Georg carried the rosary with him. During his service, he was wounded by an Arabian horseman who slashed him as he was trying to secure a loose horse. The sword cut him under his nose. From that day on, he wore a small mustache. So although he was wounded, he did return as the woman had said he would. The rosary was put away until my parents were married, at the end of World War II. My grandfather presented the rosary to my father and was told the story. In 1951 my father was sent to Korea to fight. As with Georg, he was wounded. He returned home and the rosary was put away. In 1967 I was drafted into the Army. My first station was Vietnam. Before I left for the plane, I was given the rosary and was told the story. I carried the rosary in my pocket for my entire tour of duty. I returned in 1969 after being in the 1968 and 1969 Tet Offensive. Unlike my grandfather and father, I was not wounded. The rosary is made of olive pits and brass. Because of many years of prayer, one of the olive pits has broken and is lost. As I have no sons, I will secure the rosary for future generations, sharing it with them as that woman shared it with my grandfather.
