Gerry STOLL CEO ArcelorMittal Distribution Looking back, 2008 was a very mixed year, one of strong and high market prices and then one of extreme caution and economical crisis. Where safety is concerned, we have seen great continued improvement, although we must not forget the fatal accident in Wondelgem, Belgium and several very serious accidents in Austria, Spain and France. Remember that we must remain vigilant at all times, that Safety remains the priority number one for ArcelorMittal. As you all know, we have come to the end of our journey together within AMD and that we are soon to be embarking on a new adventure at AM3S level, may I thank you all of your extraordinary hard work and efforts. I know I can count on you to make this new challenge the huge success that it deserves to be. Happy New Year! Gerry STOLL 04 Health and Safety Journey to 0 ! In AM Distribution, we are still far away from 0 accidents, having in average in 2008 untill now at least 2 accidents with lost time every month. Only good news is that the severity of the accidents decreases gradually. That this positive trend is not a guarantee for not having severe or even fatal accidents, has been proven with the fatal accident we had to deplore in our Wondelgem site (Belgium) on September 8th, 2008. Utmost attention is asked from all of our managers to make sure that the execution of the Health & Safety action plans is on schedule and is even speeded up as far as serious risks are concerned. We often see that everybody thinks that a safety risk is under control as soon as the action has been defined. This is of course not true: until finalisation of the action special safety measures should be taken to assure safe working, untill the final solution is implemented. Please take care. Focus will be on the urgent application of traffic plans in all our sites and the definition of safety action plans for 2009 based on risk analysis, as requested in the 2009 HSE plan of AM, “Journey to zero”. The next important action will be the implementation of the shop floor audits by all managers in our organisation, having as a goal to observe and discuss the actual behaviour of all employees in working situations, making sure that all safety procedures and instructions are carefully followed or adapted, if they are not correct. These short and practical audits will become part of the work of each manager, will be mandatory and will be logged afterwards. It will be the application of a group standard, making once more clear that we are determined to reach zero accidents, knowing that it will be a continuous struggle. We count on all of you to make AMD accident free ! Health and Safety Best practices 05 Storage – Surface People working between, or close to, stored products may be exposed to a significant risk of injury. Therefore storage systems should be designed and operated to: • Provide a safe work place • Minimise the risks to personnel from equipment or load failure • Minimise the amount of time that personnel spend in storage • Provide adequate access platforms, steps,… • Be the most efficient and easy to use • Provide sufficient safe passages between the material if necessary. Best Practice : AM Projects Singapore AM Projects Singapore recently moved to a new stock where they adapted the surface and storage system from the start. • The concrete surface is even and solid to support the weight of the material and this surface reduces the risk of tripping and stumbling. • The professional storage system, toast racks, protects the employees working between the material and the racks reduce the risk of falling material. After / Después • Solid and even surface / • Protected walkways / • Professional storage system (toast racks) • Superficie sólida y nivelada / • Pasillos protegidos / • Sistema de almacenamiento profesional (toast racks) 06 Region: Iberia Museum of human evolution and the “first european” Everything began in the mountain range of Atapuerca, small mountainous group located in the north of Ibeas de Juarros, close to Burgos (Castilla y León, Spain) extending from northwest to southeast in the conjunction of Cantabrian and Iberian mountain range. This archaeological site was discovered a century ago when a mining railway line was being built, the excavation works started just 20 years ago. This is one of the most important discoveries in palaeontology and has changed the history of humanity. In 1992, the Sima de los Huesos, was discovered where were found fossil human remains of 32 people dated to an age of at least 300,000 years old, possible Neanderthal ancestors. However, in 1994 another even more important discovery was made at Gran Dolina cave where the most primitive fossil European remains were discovered: 80 pieces of 6 humans dating from over 780.000 years. Hominid remains of at least 3 different human races have been found: Homo Antecesor, Homo Heidelbergensis and Homo Sapiens. Unesco declared the Archaeological Site of Atapuerca a World Heritage Site, Space of Natural Interest and Cultural Interest Heritage. A team of scientifists composed of Emiliano Aguirre, Juan Luis Arsuaga, Eudald Carbonell, José María Bermúdez de Castro and another 50 people, most of them biologists, palaeontologists, geologists and anthropologists, have been working on this project since 1990. They were awarded with the Price of Asturias award for Scientific and Technical investigation in 1997 and they have received international recognition for their contribution to the understanding of the human prehistory. The city of Burgos started to design and build a big museum to become a worldwide landmark of this major discovery. Four years ago, the architect Baldeweg won an international competition to design MHE All of us did our small part: ARCELORMITTAL sending their plates to METÁLICAS ESTRUMAR, company located in Burgos, specialised in the design, manufacturing and assembly of big structures, viaducts, industrial plants, commercial centres, racks for tubes. During 30 years they have performed important jobs but without any doubt their most emblematic work is the Museum of the Human Evolution. It took a year for the manufacturing and assembly of the steel structures in quality S355 J2 G3 (3.600 tns in a 16.000 m2 space). Its installation required the support of the subterranean parking in order to be able to use cranes of 400 tns. and scaffolds of 30 mts in height for the welding operations. The logistics were also crucial. More than 100 special transports crossing Burgos city, with dimensions 30 mts in length and 4 mts wide with a tonnage of 50 tns. The erected steel tonnes are not only decorative but also are part of the structure. The enormous trusses crossing the roof from one side to the other are its skeleton, where the opaque strips alternate with big skylights, which are covered with mobile sun and light regulating sheets (in Burgos they have a special blue colour) The huge structure allows it to be appreciated from all over the city the volume of the building. The big red crosspieces of up to 30 mts height have become an essential part of this emblematic museum. This museum, that will become the target of a great number of worldwide visitors thanks to its beauty and palaeontology importance, embraces an exact reproduction of Sima de los Huesos – site only visited by the palaeontologist-. The visitors will have also access to Darwin’s office, Beagle ship and be able to listen to his theories about the evolution, or sit down inside a big brain. Get into the jungle –with all its sounds- or pose with a mammoth or gaze at Atapuerca landscape. Region: Eastern Europe 07 ArcelorMittal Distribution in region Eastern Europe Budapest ArcelorMittal Distribution Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) is important player in the CEE steel market and currently covers needs of its customers in eight countries – Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia and Romania. In October 2008 there were working 469 employees in 12 stocks and 11 offices. Each country has its specific area of customers, works on its specific projects but all of them have one thing in common – dedicated employees who give all their knowledge, skills and enthusiasm to development of our business and success of our company. Our agencies in CEE serve hundreds and hundreds of customers, from small retail buyers to large companies working on major regional projects. To get closer to the customers and to be able to serve them and to deliver the products more efficiently, management of each country continuously looks for improvements and possibilities of further development. Let’s take a look on couple of examples of this development. In September 2008 there was opened new retail stock in Belgrade, Serbia. Opening was respond to increasing demand of steel products in this city and supplements large deliveries from the central Serbian stock in Novi Sad. In September 2008, there was opened also in Slovakia brand new stock in Presov replacing old stock in Brezno which was closed in beginning of this year. This new stock with total storage area 7000 m2 gives us easier access to our customers and modern, more comfortable and safer work environment for our employees. Not only new projects and development of stocks helps our staff to support their work and assignment. It’s also name of the company, image and trust in brand what helps our vendors to reach their goals and strengthen dedication of all people working in our organization. For these reasons (but not only for them, of course) branches in CEE countries started project of renaming connected to brand new decoration of our stocks and offices. New names all start with ArcelorMittal Distribution and are created according to the same model so there will be more clear for the customers who we are, what are our possibilities in the region and that we are trustworthy and strong partner able not only to transform tomorrow but also to turn dreams to reality. Czech Republic : Central stock Frydek-Mistek Czech Republic : Bucharest stock Region: Netherlands Rotterdam Welcome back in Rotterdam - August 4th 2008 For Rotterdam citizens with a maritime feeling in their heart and soul, August 4th 2008 was an unforgettable day. It was the day the steamship “The Rotterdam” returned to her home port where she was built in 1958/1959. Now the charming iron lady is almost ready for a new future. “The Rotterdam” was built at the Rotterdam Drydock. Most probably the former Dikema & Chabot was at the time co-supplier for the steel (plates) via the cooperative purchasing organisation “Coopra”. The launching of the Rotterdam by the Queen of the Netherlands took place on September 13th 1958. After that the ship was completed and operated by the Holland America Line as from 1959. It was the biggest passenger ship that had ever been built in Holland. It was one of the most attractive ships that sailed throughout the world. The advanced design and the touch of many well known architects and artists emphasized the beauty and the unique character of the ship. September 3rd 1959, “The Rotterdam” left for the first time the harbour where she was born; destination New York! During many years “The Rotterdam” ran a regular service to New York till the last transatlantic journey in 1971. As from that year the ship was used as a cruiser. Several voyages around the world were made. In spite of her age, the ship turned out to be very modern. Only a few adjustments were necessary to keep up with the modern times. Passengers continued to book; many of them were so called “repeaters”. In 1997 the ownership changed from Holland American Line to the American shipping company “Premier Cruises”. The Rotterdam was then renamed “Rembrandt”. The city of Rotterdam welcomed the “Rembrandt” once more in October 1998 after 27 years! Unfortunately Premier Cruises faced financial problems and the ship was taken out of service. As from September 2000 the ship waited for new perspectives to come in Freeport / Bahamas. Nothing was sure about her future. Various plans were made and abandoned. The Foundation “Conservation Steamship Rotterdam” started the initiative that finally resulted in the return of the ship to Holland. Sustainability and connection with the history of civilization were the keywords in the intended purpose. All the asbestos was removed from the ship and in Cadiz “The Rotterdam” was given a thorough service in dock. In Wilhemlshaven “The Rotterdam” was partly renovated. Now, autumn 2008, the ship is in the process of being finished in order to be soon ready for a new purpose: hotel, congress and catering facilities. Guided tours on board will follow. The conservation of “The Rotterdam” also means the crowning glory of steel as strong and longlasting material. Day The participants in macs with an ArcelorMittal design and baseball caps to match The picture shows one group presenting their terrifying monster. This year saw the third instalment of our Apprentice Day. It has meanwhile become something of a cherished tradition for our young employees from all parts of the country to come together in an effort to get to know one another, exchange views and information and/or renew old friendships. After lunch together at the hotel the group travelled by bus to the Teufelsschlucht (Devil’s Gorge). Following a short introduction at the natural history station in the Naturpark Eifel (Eifel Nature Park) the participants were divided into six groups, made up of both apprentices and instructors. Each equipped with a rucksack stuffed with tools and a mind game, the solutions to which led to the various points of the walk, they set off into the forest in quest of “delectation” - or would that be disaster? For it was the fate of a number of these daredevils to cross the awesome Devil’s Gorge with the help of a cable, a daring feat for which each “equilibrist” was able to score extra points for his or her team. In addition points were accumulated by finding paintings on stones and certain plants, shooting an animal made of straw with a bow and arrow and guessing the identity of Stone Age animals. For the task of creating a primeval monster imagination was the key. After the award ceremony and the subsequent dinner at the hotel the apprentices presented their branch offices in a variety of ways (one group chose to show a short film). Following breakfast at 7.00 a.m. next day (and after what was for some a very short night) we headed toward the high point of our outing – a tour of the Belval steel works in Luxembourg. Having arrived at the plant we were first given a short presentation about the facility. Thereupon, each equipped with a helmet and goggles, we passed into the plant for a tour of the continuous casting machine. The outing was topped off by a visit to the headquarters of ArcelorMittal in Luxembourg, where an exquisite lunch had been prepared for the participants. Thus an eventful and interesting Apprentice Outing 2008 came to an end. But as the saying goes after the event is before the event… And so all of us are looking forward to coming together again in 2009! An impressive sight: The continuous casting machine shapes liquid metal into steel girders at high temperatures. View of the headquarters of ArcelorMittal in the Avenue de la Liberté in Luxembourg. Event 11 « Reims à toutes jambes » 2008 – Sunday 19th October The tracks took the runners around the City starting at the famous world heritage Notre Dame Cathedral. Along the route there were many stage’s with music, people encouraging the runners helping them on their way. ArcelorMittal Distribution, ArcelorMittal Steel Service Centres and ArcelorMittal Top joined the “company challenge” set up by the “Reims à toutes jambes”. The concept is simple. : to allow sport to become part of company life to get not only the different teams involved but also the partners and the customers. This year, 311 people (children, women, men) took part in this event. Stamina, team spirit, willpower, results, solidarity ….so many values that we can share all together… Once again, this year, 1 euro for each km run was donated to the Reims Hospital working against the ill-treatment of children. ArcelorMittal Distribution paid 4600 € to help them to buy some adapted material, to train their doctor. Come and join us next year lets make our team even bigger !!! Shopping is a torture: crowded supermarkets, no parking space, waiting times at the cash desks, hot-tempered people exploding at the slightest little thing. We distinguish two categories of men in the shops: the experts on cooking and the ones that have been sent with a shopping list. The last category is often very funny! Let me illustrate: A man, standing next to me, read out his shopping list in the fish shop. One of the items did not seem to be clear so the shop-assistant asked: What is the purpose? What do you want to do with it? The man was flabbergasted: What do I want to do with it? Eat it! … France A short story concerning the christmas log in France : the custom was to, on Christmas Eve, to look for the log, called the Christmas log. On Christmas Eve night the head of the house plaged it in the fireplace, blessed it and covered it with salt (to protect against witches) and wine (of a good vintage of course) and then recited prayers. This custom appeared in the 12th century and continued until the last quarter of the XIXth century. The disappearance of this tradition coincided with the progressive replacement of the great open fireplaces by the smaller iron ones. The large wooden logs were thus replaced by the Christmas logs which have become the typical Christmas dessert : a pastry composed of a rolled cake with coffee or chocolate icing and decorated with holly leaves, sugared roses and of course, fathers Christmas ! Christmas is celebrated on the evening of December 24th, a day called holy eve “Heiligabend”. On that evening many people go to church - often decorated with magnificent cribs “Weihnachtskrippe” - to celebrate a Christmas mass. Mostly these masses are prepared for children to tell them the story about the Nativity of Jesus Christ. When the family comes back from church the living room is usually locked and the children must wait to enter the room with the Christmas tree and the gifts that lie under the tree until a little bell rings. This bell represents the leaving of the Christ Child “Christkind“, who according to tradition brings the presents (instead of Saint Nicholas or Santa Claus). … Italy Italy is a country where many different traditions exist. Some region will wait “la Befana” (a witch which comes on the 6th of January to give gifts to the children), many others will make a beautiful crib. In Bergamo, there is a particular devotion to Santa Lucia (Saint Lucy), which takes place the 13th of December. Before this date, you can see children queuing before the church where the statue of the saint is, in order to give their gifts list. Santa Lucia is a beautiful tradition: at this date we share candies and chocolates, even between colleagues in office… To achieve our goals, we must be able to work together effectively as a team.
