Summer of 2016 is about choices and experiences to
match every girl’s wishes and interests. We’re confident
the young lady in your life will find something fun she
can’t wait to do this summer at our camps!
Camp is a place where a girl can make new friends,
explore the world around her and discover something
she can’t wait to do again. It’s a place where
transformations happen. In an environment created
just for her, she will learn real life skills and develop
self-esteem while gaining a sense of independence and
community. While playing outdoors, girls encounter
more opportunities for decision making that lets them
work together to problem solve and think creatively.
Camp gives girls the chance to let their curiosity run free
and sparks their imagination!
Girl Scout camp helps a girl discover her potential,
dreams, and aspirations as she builds a skill set she can
use for success today and in her future. Campers will
discover, connect and even take action on issues and
challenges important to them.

WHO CAN GO TO CAMP?
Girls entering grades K-12 and all camp experience levels
are welcome. Use this guide to find the camp that’s right
for your girl.
The best part is that ANY girl can attend Girl Scout
camps! Non-Girl Scouts simply pay an annual
$15 membership fee in addition to the camp fee to
become a registered Girl Scout.
The Girl Membership Form can be found
on page 29.
Welcome
CAMP LA JITA
RESIDENT CAMP
LOW-COST PHYSICALS
FOR RESIDENT CAMPERS
La Jita is a Native American phrase meaning “Precious
Possession,” aptly chosen as the name of the Girl Scouts
of Southwest Texas camp that rests on 236 acres of
Texas Hill Country land along the beautiful Sabinal River
near Utopia. The John F. Camp family donated the land
in 1946 for thousands of happy campers have enjoyed
Camp La Jita during the camp’s 70-year history.
Wednesday, May 4, 5:30-7 p.m.
Camp La Jita is proud to be accredited by the American
Camp Association (ACA), with whom we have received
100 percent satisfaction for the last five site visits, which
take place every three years. Developed exclusively for
the camp profession, this nationally recognized program
focuses on program quality, health and safety issues, and
requires us to review every facet of our operation. The
display of the ACA logo is a privilege reserved for camps
which have met the criteria.
Girls can attend one- and two-week sessions living in
rustic cabins. They’ll develop independence while under
the supervision of specially trained camp staff who help
girls plan activities to create a unique camp experience.
A variety of sessions are open to all girls entering grades
K-12. Scholarships are available—see page 23. The
completed application with registration form is due
Friday, April 15 for consideration.
Three meals are served daily in the community dining
hall. Activities range from riding horses, swimming, hiking,
archery, canoeing, arts and crafts, cookouts, nature
activities, singing, games, earning Girl Scout badges and
more. See more on pages 12-17. Find the registration
form on page 27.

CAMP OPEN HOUSE
CAMP LA JITA
Saturday, April 23, 2-4 p.m.
Parents/guardians, friends, campers and troops are
invited to visit Camp La Jita. Meet the camp director,
have your questions answered, watch activities in
action and tour the location. Whether it has been years
since you’ve visited or it’s the first time sending your girl
to camp, don’t miss this great opportunity to see the
excitement Girl Scout camp has to offer. If attending
Camp La Jita’s open house, please remember exploring
camp means walking—wear comfortable shoes (please,
no sandals or flip-flops), casual clothes and a hat. Also
remember to bring a water bottle! Camp registrations
will be accepted. For security reasons, travel instructions
are available by contacting the Girl Scout office.
Directions may be provided via phone, as well as in camp
confirmation packets.
Camp La Jita welcomes enthusiastic, talented and caring adults interested in making a
difference in the life of a girl! Staff members are selected based on experience, ability to serve
as positive role models and a genuine desire to work with children. The ratio of counselors
to girls varies. Seasonal positions available include kitchen staff, nurses, lifeguards and
counselors. Interested? For positions available visit [bit.ly/196pUek].

Ready for Camp?
ARE YOU AND YOUR
CAMPER READY
FOR CAMP?
Although age is one factor in camp readiness,
a girl’s maturity level and personality are more
important. Talk with your girl about camp and
ask if she wants to attend. Additionally, are
you ready to send your child to camp? Use the
following statements or questions to help make
your decisions together.
•
•
•
Emotional Readiness
•
•
•
•
•
•
6
Has your camper ever been away from
home for more than one night without a
family member? Girls should not be afraid to
be away from home or parents overnight and
to try new things.
Are you prepared to be away from your
child for several days? Parents also need to
be prepared to let their daughter go!
She wants to go? Let her choose the session.
Can she cope with new people, places and
schedules? She should be willing to sleep, eat,
play with all girls, not just with best friends and
function as a member of a group.
Can she cope with unknowns like:
– Strange places, including bathrooms
– Darkness (no electricity)
– Woods and night noises
– Spiders, bugs and worms
Doesn’t always have to have her own way,
can give in graciously.
•
•
Can she care for her own basic hygiene
needs, such as brushing her teeth and
showering?
Are you confident in your daughter’s ability
to take care of herself, make her own bed
and keep track of her belongings?
Does she like, and is she comfortable in, the
outdoors?
Do you believe Girl Scout camp provides
girls with a fun and rewarding experience
that builds skills, self-worth and
independence?
Can manage with little or no privacy.
Physical Readiness
•
•
•
•
Has stamina, does not tire easily.
Strong enough to carry her own suitcase,
bed roll, bucket of water, pot of food, arm
load of wood, etc.
Has strength and coordination needed for
planned activities, can help sweep and mop a
floor, hike a mile, move tables and chairs, etc.
Able to function without air conditioning;
none of the cabins and few places on camp
have air conditioning.
If your camper is not ready for a five-day overnight
stay, we invite her to try troop camping so she can
try the camping experience with others that she
knows well.

CAMP IS A SPECIAL PLACE where girls jump
into action and connect with nature. They will plan
their own adventurous program that breaks away from
their home routine and creates fun with new friends
in a healthy outdoor environment. Research has
shown that nature is an important aspect of
a child’s development in every major way—
intellectually, emotionally, socially, spiritually
and physically. That’s why Camp La Jita
is the chance for girls to spend summer
outdoors! They will gain self-confidence
through laughter, play and personal growth and
enjoy a shared independence under the guidance
of trained camp staff.
All resident camp sessions take place Sunday-Friday.
Caregivers can drop off girls on Sunday between 3-5
p.m. and pick them up on Friday between 3-5 p.m.
During the one- or two-week stay, girls will reside in a
rustic cabin in one of camp’s seven living units with
12
other girls their age. Each unit is continually supervised
by two or more counselors whose cabin isn’t too
far from theirs. Don’t worry; units have showers and
operational toilets a short distance from their cabin.
The day is spent in a variety of activities with
a rest period after lunch during the warmer
part of the day to write letters, read or play
card games. Afternoons are filled with more
adventures, dinner, late night swimming,
stargazing and singing by the campfire.
Kapers, a.k.a. camp chores, will also be a part
of each day’s routine to help develop a sense of
responsibility and appreciation for keeping camp neat
and clean. Except for the cookout on Thursday night
that they help plan, meals are served three times a day
in the Great Hall, our central dining facility. And in case
they need one, afternoon snacks are also provided.
Resident Camp Registration form is on page 27.

Camp La Jita
CAMP LA JITA FAQS
Frequently Asked Questions
1) Where is the resident camp located? Camp
is located 2 miles south of Utopia. The physical
address is 19459 Hwy 187 N., Utopia, TX 78884.
A map is included in your confirmation packet.
2) What is Camp La Jita’s contact phone number?
830-966-3526
3) What’s the weather like at Camp La Jita in the
summer? The weather varies, but is very similar
to San Antonio. Temperature can be plus or minus
as much as 10 degrees of San Antonio weather
because we are in the Hill Country.
4) Why do I have so much paperwork? We want
to ensure you have all the information you need
to prepare your camper for camp, and also so we
can properly ensure that your camper is safe. We
apologize for the inconvenience!
5) What is the camper release form? This form
gives us permission to have your camper treated
in an emergency, tells us who is allowed to pick up
your camper, if we have permission to use photo
or video images of them for promotional use, if
they are allowed to participate in all of our camp
activities (like swimming and horseback riding),
and if they are allowed to watch a movie (if it is
related to their camp theme). Please hand carry
this form to camp; it is the first one you will be
asked for.
6) What is the camper/parent agreement? This
form is an agreement that your camper is going to
follow the Girl Scout Promise and Law; campers
who do not may be asked to go home. You will fill
this out with your camper and the unit counselors
before leaving.
7) When will I be notified of an illness? While we
strive to prevent illnesses and injuries at camp,
sometimes campers can get hurt. We understand
that you have a busy schedule or may want to call
and check on your camper every day to see if they
are okay.
a. You will be notified of minor illnesses and injuries,
such as blisters, scratches or cuts requiring a
Band-Aid, minor sunburns, or insect bites at the
end of the week.
b. If your camper has an illness or injury that
concerns the Health Supervisor or the Camp
Director, such as elevated temperature, vomiting
and diarrhea, burns, sprains, or a medical situation
that may require your camper to be treated at a
medical facility, you will be contacted immediately.
c. Camp La Jita is served by Utopia Volunteer EMS,
and the hospitals that are able to serve us in
emergencies include Uvalde Memorial Hospital
and Peterson Regional Medical Center in Kerrville.
8) What is the Trading Post? Camp La Jita operates
the Trading Post, which is the camp store. It usually
carries shirts, water bottles, hats, stuffed animals,
games, jewelry and other fun stuff. It does not
carry food as we provide snacks in the afternoon.
The Trading Post is cash or check only, and will be
open on Friday during checkout. Campers will visit
the Trading Post at least once during their session
to make purchases. Money is kept for girls in an
envelope with their name and returned at the
end of their camp session during the checkout
process.
9) Why are the counselors in separate cabins?
This is for several reasons; we don’t have
counselors in the cabins to afford both the girls
and staff privacy. It also allows the girls a sense of
independence. However, the counselors stay in
cabins close by, so the girls are supervised.
10) If there is bad weather or flooding, should
I come pick up my daughter? We want to
encourage you to not worry, as camp has high
ground that girls can go to during an emergency.
The staff are also trained of where to go during
bad weather. We do not want to put you in any
danger trying to go to camp. If there is an event
that we need you to pick up your camper, we will
implement our ICE plan (In Case of Emergency)
and the ICE team will contact you with specific
information of when and where to pick up your
camper.
19
Camp La Jita
11) Can I bring mail to camp or do I just mail it?
BOTH! You can hand carry mail and leave at the
check in table, or you can mail it a few days in
advance. Don’t forget to put your camper’s name,
session name (ex. Saddle Up) and what day you
would like the mail delivered.
12) Can I purchase a care package at camp?
Unfortunately, the Trading Post can’t complete
care package transactions. These must be paid
for at the Sally Cheever and West Side Girl Scout
Leadership Center shops or online. You can fill
out the form on page 31 and follow the directions
provided.
13) I don’t think I got the packing list/ confirmation
packet/ permission forms and I don’t know
where to get them! If you have not received your
confirmation letter or information packet, contact
the Volunteer Service Center to have them resent
to you. They can be reached at 210-349-2404/1800-580-7247 or email VolunteerHelpDesk@
girlscouts-swtx.org
14) My camper is in a two-week horse unit (Saddle
Sidekicks, Night Riders or Wild, Wild West), and
I want to know if I can pick them up after their
show on the second Thursday. You can definitely
come pick up your camper after their show. Please
arrive for the show before 7 p.m. and have photo
ID ready to show the director to check out your
camper.
15) Will my camper who is in a two week session
be able to do any laundry? Campers can use the
camp laundry facilities to clean their clothes during
the weekend. Please pack your camper some
detergent and dryer sheets.
16) I forgot to bring my camper’s sleeping bag/fan/
etc.! If you get to camp and realized you forgot
to bring something for your camper, we will try to
locate something your camper can use, otherwise
you can bring it by the camp office later in the
week.
20
Camp La Jita
17) I forgot my camper’s medications/sleeping
bag/ luggage when I picked her up on Friday!
We try to bring lost & found to the West Side Girl
Scout Leadership Center once a week, and you
can claim it there; keep in mind it takes up to a
week for lost and found to be transported. Please
make sure to label all of your camper’s belongings!
Unclaimed lost & found will be donated at the end
of August to Goodwill.

830-966-3526 or tbomer@girlscouts-swtx.
org to discuss your specific requirements. If we
determine that we can accommodate your child’s

CAMPOLOGY
Campology
As with all program sponsored by Girl Scouts of Southwest
Texas, activities are governed with the best interest,
health and safety of every girl. All river and lake activities
are dependent on the recommendation of the Corps of
Engineers as to the safety of the water level (too low or too
high) and the bacteria count. Every attempt is made to offer
the girls everything that is listed in the camp guide; however,
due to circumstances beyond our control (weather, etc.),
some activities may be changed. In this case, girls are given
several choices to complete their camp experience.
